Club Update

Dear Members,

I’m excited to officially announce that we have a new Executive Chef! Mark Sanders has accepted our offer and will begin his role on Tuesday, August 12th.

Mark is a Certified Executive Chef through the American Culinary Federation and brings over 25 years of culinary experience to SPCC. Most recently, he served as Executive Chef at Prospect Bay Country Club and has held leadership positions at several prestigious clubs, including the Atlanta Athletic Club, Capital City Club in Downtown Atlanta, Bay Colony in Naples, and the City Club of Washington, D.C.

I appreciate everyone’s patience throughout this process. While it took longer than anticipated, I’m confident that under Mark’s leadership, our culinary program will see meaningful improvements in both quality and consistency for our members.

As a follow-up to the message sent on July 15th regarding the recent survey results, we will be distributing a Food and Beverage-specific survey later this month. This survey will focus more closely on the dining experience at the Club, including service, menu offerings, special events, and weekly promotions. Just like the bi-annual survey, your participation is essential. Your feedback will help guide our leadership team in enhancing your overall dining and social experience at the Club.

Our leadership team has added a few new social events to the August calendar, and we hope you and your families can join us for at least one of them! In addition to our regular Birthday and BINGO nights, we’re excited to bring back Trivia Night on Saturday, August 16th, and introduce Family Fun Night on Saturday, August 23 . Please refer to this POI for event times and additional details. rd

Come celebrate Labor Day with us as we say goodbye to pool season. The entire holiday weekend is reserved for the Giant Water Slide, Popcorn, and Cotton Candy. Saturday, we will feature Traditional Pit Beef Sandwiches, and Sunday, we have Musical BINGO with Prizes. The annual Labor Day barbecue buffet will conclude on Monday, September 1st, from 11 am to 5 pm, served on the patio.

Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone about our upcoming Centennial Celebration, taking place from Tuesday, September 16th through Sunday, September 21st. This week-long event will honor the rich history of our Club with a variety of exciting activities. Highlights include period-inspired food and drink specials. We will be sending out a detailed announcement with event times and additional information later this month—stay tuned!

Feel free to contact me at any time if I can be of service to you. My direct line is 410-477-0220 extension 9, and my email is mtroyner@spcc1925.com. The membership's unwavering backing and advocacy for the Club is greatly valued, and I want to express my appreciation.

With gratitude,

Members - Don’t forget to save the date and spend the week with us as we celebrate 100 years! There will be fun Club events and specials all week long starting September 16 . The weekend line-up will be in full swing with amazing events happening around the Club. You won’t want to miss this. Mark your calendars now!

OnbehalfoftheentireSPCCteam,Iwanttosincerely thank you for taking the time to complete our biannual member survey. Your feedback is invaluable and plays a vital role in helpingus shape the future of theClub.

Our goal is to ensure that your voice is not only heard but translated into meaningful improvements across all areas of your Club experience. Once the action plan has been finalized and implementation is underway, we will share an update outlining the key initiatives we’re taking and how they align with the feedbackyouprovided.

2025 Bustard Charity Event Recap

The Sparrows Point Country Club Charity Event was held on July 26, 2025. Eighty golfers joined by another forty dinner guests combined to generate $12,000 for employee scholarships. In addition to the overflow in donations of personal products that were given to the Angels Supporting Your Troops, we were also able to donate $5,000 to the same group. While there were several winners in the various golf contests that day, the big winners were our Employees and Angels Supporting Your Troops. The proceeds of the Event are administered by the Pamela J.S. Bustard Memorial Fund, which in turn awards the scholarships and makes a donation on behalf of the SPCC Membership to The Angels. Since our two tournaments (Swing for Hope and ThePammyGirlOpen)werecombinedin2015,SPCCmembershaveraisedover$200,000!

From the Golf Shop

Dear SPCC Golfers,

Let the “dog days” of August begin! We had an extremely successful July of Group-Play, Team-Play, and Junior Golf Camps. We had a fantastic 2025 Bustard Memorial/SPCC Charity Tournament plus Dinner on July 26th. A HUGE ‘thank you’ to all the Members & Guests who made this July 26th Event at the Club such a special day.

If you’re looking to improve your SPCC Golf experiences at the Club, participate in as many Club Tournaments/Events as you can. You can also take a Private Golf Lesson and/or participate in a Clinic/PDP Series. We’ve completed 11 of the 15 2025 SPCC Centennial Cup Series Events to date. There’s still time to register if you haven’t already done so for this Centennial Cup Series. Our 2025 Founder’s Cup Matches are into their fourth month of competition, as well as our Two-Man Tango Tournament.

There are several ways to register for any of our Club Tournaments/Events. You can log onto the Club Website, click on the Golf Events Registration tab, and then look for 2025 Golf Events that are open for registration. You can also register for August and early-September Golf Events in person or over the phone. Please keep an eye out as well for our Club Email-blasts announcing plus highlighting upcoming Golf Events, Fitting Days, plus Club Events. We have the Major 2025 Golf Events/Tournaments current on the SPCC Website’s Club Calendar.

Our 2025 SPCC Summer Junior Golf Camps concluded at the end of July. The Golf Professional Staff gives a LARGE thanks to all the Juniors, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and family friends for their support of this year’s 2025 SPCC Junior Golf Camps. We more than doubled last year’s participant numbers. Bigger goals for next Summer! We have also identified a solid core of SPCC Junior Golfers who can be our foundation for the SPCC PGA Junior Golf League’s Teams for the next 4-6 years to start.

Please be careful when driving our New Golf Cart Fleet on the golf course when near tree stumps, cart path curbs, and/or any bulge on the ground. Our new Golf Cart Fleet rides lower to the ground, so it’s a lot easier to bottom-out and tear off our Fleet’s skid-plates from underneath the Golf Cart. When our Practice Range is on our Grass Tee-Deck, please use the recommended USGA/GCSA-recommended divot patterns to help maximize turf growth, plus efficient regeneration of our warm-weather grasses. If you have any questions, pleaseinquirewiththeGolfProfessionalStaff.

Agronomy

Just a couple of months of the heat left! With our weather though...who knows?! We have been making it through the heat with some stress on greens and starting to see some improvement in the areas that took a hit in the week of 100-degree temperatures. We have also lucked out with the storms so far and have only gotten about a half inch of rain at a time, which helps with keeping moisture in the soil, but not too much to where the turf will be damaged from the high amount of moisture and temperatures.

Along with the heat and humidity comes the weeds, and they like this weather much more than our turf does. During the irrigation installation we couldn’t get all the pre-emergent herbicide applied to keep the goose and crabgrass population low so have been doing a lot of post emergent applications which has to be more careful with spraying in the heat and giving it enough time to dry on the plant before rain comes through which has been a challenge but getting to where we need it before the weed population gets out of control.

The turf we have that does well in the heat is Bermuda grass. The patchy areas of turf in the fairways are ryegrass, which is a cool-season grass, and as you can tell, doesn’t do well in the summer. More noticeable on holes 6 through 12 because of the shade caused by the trees keeps Bermudagrass from taking over those areas. This summer, we have been fertilizing the Bermuda more to push it to grow into the areas of the rye to have a more uniform stand of turf in the fairways. This is a slower process and won’t fill in the larger areas, but will take over some ryegrass and keep the fairways from being so patchy coming out of the winter into the spring.

Tater is in an ongoing battle with the geese! They were being contained around the driving range pond, but started to venture to the pier and number 18 at night. After a couple of nights of chasing them later in the day, they have retreated again! My cart has been replenished with treats, so if you see us on the course, feel free to wave us down and show him some love for getting rid of the nasty goose mess!
