ADVANCING INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION Recipient of the prestigious NSF Career Award and IBM faculty award, Kaan Ozbay is dedicated to the advancement of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), from operations to safety and security. He is the co-author of three books on ITS, more than 400 refereed papers, co-recipient of several best paper awards, and serves on the editorial boards of several transportation journals. At NYU, he is the founding director of the C2SMART Center, a solution-oriented USDOT University Transportation Center taking on some of today’s most pressing urban mobility challenges. He also founded UrbanMITS Lab, where he conducts pioneering research on data-driven intelligent transportation system problems with his PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.
SOPHIA MERCURIO ’25 Civil Engineering, PhD While pursuing her master’s degree in civil engineering, Sophia enthusiastically conducted research in geoenvironmental engineering, including physical modeling of contaminant transport. Through NYU Tandon’s K-12 STEM initiative, she worked as a graduate fellow in local schools, broadening her engineering perspective and inspiring elementary, middle, and high school students to pursue STEM studies and careers. In addition, Sophia has published three articles in leading journals and recently completed her doctoral degree in the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering.
