YOUR FUTURE AS A

SOUTHWESTERN ALUM A message from President and Dean Darby Dickerson

If you are reading this viewbook, you’re probably weighing one of the biggest decisions of your life. For many of you, law school is something you have considered or even dreamed about for years. But you may be asking whether now is the right time to apply, whether law school is worth the investment, or whether Southwestern is where you can thrive. After reviewing the viewbook, I hope your answer is “yes!” More than 16,000 Southwestern alumni once faced these same questions. Having selected Southwestern, they now use their knowledge, skills, and values to serve their clients in courtrooms, city halls, studios, public agencies, nonprofits, businesses, and communities across Los Angeles and beyond. But their stories don’t follow a single script, and yours will be unique. Southwestern students bring different experiences, responsibilities, and ambitions to law school. Some want a full-time, or even accelerated, experience. Others need a program that allows them to balance with work, family, or other responsibilities. That is why Southwestern offers more pathways into the profession than any law school in the country: full-time, part-time day, accelerated, and fully online. Because law school should fit into your life — not require you to leave it behind. Southwestern combines an accomplished, caring faculty with programs that reflect the breadth and changing needs of the legal profession. Its distinctive offerings include the nationally recognized Biederman Entertainment, Media, and Sports Law Institute; Lawyers for America, an innovative progression from a year-long externship to paid, post-bar public interest work; and the nation’s first fully online J.D. program available in both full-time and part-time formats. This viewbook begins with your future: the people you may help, the causes you may advance, and the lawyer you may become. Because a legal education is not simply about earning a degree. It’s about preparing to make a difference. The legal profession needs your voice, your perspective, and your talents. I hope Southwestern is where your journey begins. Darby Dickerson President and Dean

Practice Starts Here Many law schools teach you to think like a lawyer; Southwestern also helps you learn to practice. From your first term, you’ll have the chance to apply legal theory in hands-on settings. Through our clinics and externships, you can draft motions, negotiate deals, and advocate for real clients, graduating ready to step into the profession and make an immediate difference.

Public Service & Pro Bono

Southwestern’s externship program, one of the nation’s largest, with placements throughout California and the nation, puts you in courts, firms, nonprofits, and in-house legal teams as early as your first summer. You earn credit and graduate with a résumé of real casework and meaningful professional connections. Remote and in-person opportunities are available for online students.

Guide asylum seekers, defend tenants facing eviction, or negotiate contracts for indie artists — earning credit while working with seasoned faculty advocates. You set strategy, draft pleadings, and often carry a case from intake to final order. By graduation, you hold finished case files that demonstrate your skill and your service to clients who need it most.

Southwestern trains lawyers who show up for their communities. Here, you take on urgent legal work in housing, immigration, and economic justice, often supported by scholarships that remove financial barriers. Complete 75 hours and graduate with distinction, carrying experience that reflects both your values and your readiness to practice. Southwestern also offers an enriching summer study-abroad program in London that includes a public interest track.

I started law school while raising two small kids and working in entertainment, looking for a way to take the next step in my career. With the support of my husband, I was able to attend part-time, which made it possible to keep everything going while building the skills to move from covering the industry to working at Netflix.” Vanessa L.
