Fees

Fees for each course are shown in the course listings, course fees, exam fees and materials fees are due on enrolment. The standard fee for new learners not receiving active means tested benefits is £3.90 per hour, the concessionary fee for new learners is £1.55 per hour and the cost recovery fee for learners enrolling on a second or subsequent courses is £5.50 per hour. All students (except those on basic skills and family learning classes), pay an annual non-refundable registration fee of £5.

Special offer

Returning learners who introduce a new learner (a learner who has not attended a course this academic year) to any course starting in the summer term can have 10% off their own returning fee. Please note you will need to enrol together and complete the application form to qualify for the discounted fee.

No cost to learner

From 2012/13 learners who meet certain criteria will not have to pay any fees for some courses.

These are

■ Those studying basic skills literacy and numeracy courses and family learning programmes.

■ Those who are on active benefits or wider offer to the unemployed will not have to pay any fees to study ESOL, vocational qualification courses full level 2 qualification courses or other level 2 courses.

■ For learners who are not on active benefits or wider offer to the unemployed, those aged 19 to 23 (but who are not on active benefits) who are studying vocational qualification courses, their first full level 2 qualification course (excluding ESOL) will not have to pay any fees.

Concessionary fees

People receiving the following benefits are eligible for a concessionary rate

■ Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or

■ Employment and Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group (ESA WRAG)

■ Council tax benefit

■ Housing benefit

■ Income support

■ Working tax credit

■ Pension credit

■ Contribution-based ESA

■ Unwaged dependent on one of the above

Learners aged 60 and over are only eligible for a concessionary fee if they are also receiving one of the benefits listed above. Please bring proof of benefit or entitlement with you when you enrol, we can not accept freedom travel passes as proof of eligibility.

Crèche

Our OFSTED registered creche is available for children aged six months to four and a half years, Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm, at £6 per hour plus a small contribution for refreshments. Full payment must be made in advance.

To get advice and to enrol on courses for ICT, reading, writing, maths, and English you need to attend one of our advice and skills check sessions. You will need to bring proof that you are eligible to join the class with you to the skills check, see page 30.

Summer term courses

Basic skills –English for speakers of other languages

ESOL entry 1. This is a short course for beginners who speak, read and write a little already. You will be able to improve your skills and prepare for the Entry 1 reading exam.

ESOL Entry 2. You will develop your speaking skills, improve your reading and writing and learn more about spelling, punctuation and grammar.

ESOL for Everyday Life. This is a course for beginners who speak, read and write a little already. You will be able to improve your communication skills and confidence.

ESOL Entry 3. This is a short course for learners who wish to improve their writing skills to help find a better job. You will be able to improve your skills and prepare for the Entry 1 Reading exam.

ESOL Level 1. This is a short evening course for improved ESOL learners who would benefit from pronunciation and more fluent speaking skills to support employment opportunities and social speaking skills.

Basic skills –reading and writing continued

Literacy Entry 3. Improve your reading and writing by learning how to plan your work, start to use paragraphs and read different kinds of texts and answer questions. You will work towards an Entry 3 certificate.

English Level 1 functional skills. This course will prepare you for reading and writing exams plus assessments in spoken communication.

Employability - computing

Make IT work for you. In this accredited functional ICT entry level course, you will learn essential computer skills. This is ideal for people who want to return to work or learn general office applications. The course covers; how to use email applications, efficient searches on the Internet, using templates, creating/editing/formatting word documents and spreadsheets.

Employability - customer service

Customer care certificate for English speakers of other languages. This accredited course in customer care covers good service practise, handling complaints and recognising body language. The course will place emphasis on spoken English, telephone skills and note taking. There is no exam. A certificate is awarded on satisfactory completion of course work. This is a recognised course accredited by the English Tourist Board. Entry Level 3 literacy is a minimum requirement. Please bring proof of JSA if claiming Nil fee.

City & Guilds Award in customer service for hospitality, travel and tourism. Gain a Level 2 Award in supervising customer service performance. Course covers the importance of customer needs, the role of the individual in delivery of customer service and the importance to the organisation in providing excellent customer service. The course is aimed at those re-entering employment or those already in a customer service and/or a hospitality role. Delivered one day a week for four weeks. Week five concludes with a short exam. We advise that learners have a minimum Level 1 in literacy in order to enter the exam. Please bring proof of JSA if claiming Nil fee.

Employability - customer service continued

Customer Service Award in Disability awareness (welcome all). This is a fast track accredited course taken over two days in one week. The course covers disability awareness in the workplace and in service industries. It looks at the Equalities Act, improving accessibility for customers, customer service guidance on a range of sensory, mobility and learning disabilities. This course is for people and/or companies who wish to enhance the service quality for customers with disabilities and specific needs. There is no exam. A certificate is awarded on satisfactory completion of coursework and course is accredited by the English Tourist Board. Level 1 literacy is a minimum requirement. Work related - health and social care programmes

NEW Anatomy and Physiology - an introduction.

A basic introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the main body systems. Suitable for those with a general interest and those taking their first steps towards work in this area. Please note this is a non-accredited course – internal certificates will be awarded.

CIEH Food Safety in Catering Level 2. Essential for anyone wishing to gain knowledge and understanding of the preparation and serving of safe food. The course programme enables employers to meet the legal requirements for all food handlers to receive basic food hygiene awareness (fees include examination fee and course booklet).

Health and Social Care - an Introduction. This course provides an introduction to the basic skills required for anyone wishing to work in health and social care, including health and safety at work, monitoring vital signs, reading charts, scales and measures, diets, and personal hygiene. Please note this is a non-accredited course – internal certificates will be awarded.

Introduction to teaching exercise to music. This course provides a simple introduction to the practical requirements of an accredited course in teaching exercise to music (OCR or similar). Come and see if you have what it takes to plan and deliver an exercise class. This course will help you progress to an accredited course in teaching exercise to music. Creative, leisure and health - art history

NEW London Explorers. Are you interested in London's history and culture? Why not join others to share common interests. We are seeking members to establish an explorers group that will meet once a month to plan walks, talks, visits and activities. The group will be facilitated by a qualified tour guide and experienced tutor. If you are interested we invite you to the founding meeting to discuss and plan a programme of activities for the summer term.

Creative writing for beginners. The emphasis will be writing which explores aspects of your lives and experiences. Pieces of work are generated from simple accessible writing activities which are shared in a friendly and supportive environment.

Craft studio. Workshop programme for people with learning support needs. Explores a variety of crafts including card making, wool-crafts, textiles, garment and accessory embellishment. Course also promotes social enterprise through costing and marketing of products.

Knitting, crochet and woolcrafts. Suitable for beginners. The course covers basic techniques for hand knitting and crochet. How to read patterns, casting off, casting on, decreasing, increasing and creating patterns. An introduction to the craft of felt making will also be included.

Remodel, recycle and repair. Discover ways to personalise your clothes. Bring new life to those neglected garments in your wardrobe. Turn that retro find into a modern masterpiece. No experience required just bring your garments and ideas. Fashion Workshop. Suitable for those with some sewing experience. Bring your ideas and try them out with experienced technical support and tutoring. Explore design, sewing, making patterns, applying detail, remodelling or altering. Work on your own project at your own pace.

Pattern making. How to measure a body, draft standard and personal blocks and make design changes to the pattern blocks. You will learn how to make basic skirt patterns and or trouser patterns. How to add design detail such as pockets and yokes. Also included is how to draft a bodice block and move the bodice darts, change necklines and add collars to create new styles. Some sewing experience would be useful.

Decorative sewing and creative textiles. The course explores basic techniques for machine embroidery, patchwork and appliqué. Create an original textile piece and use it to make a unique work of art or item for your home or wardrobe.

Cushions and curtains. This covers how to use a sewing machine and carry out basic techniques required to make cushion and curtains. Sample lined and unlined curtains and learn to attach heading tapes. Design and make an original cushion from your own fabric. Explore trimming techniques and options for cushion openings. Suitable for beginners.

Modern patchwork textiles. Explore traditional and machine fabric piecing to create modern wall hangings, quilts, craft items, throws, cushions and collectables.

Soft doll making - an introduction. Design, make and dress a unique heir loom doll. Course covers templates, hand embroidering features and making doll costumes.

Interior design. Learn the basic rules of interior design, understand the use of colours and materials. Work on your own project and design your space.

Lampshade and cushion making. Learn to make bespoke lampshades - traditional silk lined and contemporary firm that co-ordinate with your home. Then design and make your own unique cushion covers. A charge is made for frames and fabrics.

Lampshade making. Learn to make bespoke lampshadestraditional silk lined and contemporary firm that co-ordinate with your home. A charge is made for frames and fabrics.

Make a planter and /or window box. Students will learn, in the four weeks, how to use basic woodworking tools to make a planter/tub for a garden. There is a materials charge of approximately £15 for the planter and £10 for the window box, but exact costs depend on wood and sizes chosen.

Picture framing. Learn how to make your own frames. Initially students should bring along a 10cm x15cm (4"x6") picture or photo for framing. A charge is made for wood, perspex and accessories; which will be approximately £20 for two frames.

Upholstery. Learn the basic aspects of upholstery, including: safe use of hand tools and equipment, stripping a chair, webbing and fabric measuring. New students should bring along a small item of furniture to begin their learning e.g. a ‘drop-in' seat or a simple stool. All projects must be approved by the tutor at enrolment. Charges are made for materials used and students provide their own top fabric. No prior experience is necessary.

Woodcarving. Explore the sculptural possibilities of wood through carving. Discover the properties of different woods, using them to make abstract or figurative work. Beginners and more experienced students work alongside each other in a supportive workshop environment. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace. Students will learn to identify, select and prepare wood(s) for carving; how to use and care for carving tools. Some wood/logs are provided and tools are available for beginners.

Woodwork. Learn to use basic tools, such as saws and chisels to make and understand the different joints used to make items. Once these techniques have been grasped, use them to plan and make your own project.

Singing for all.* This is for anyone who has ever felt they may have a voice. You do not need to read music or to have sung before. This course will include exercises for breathing and vocal skills, group singing to build confidence and selfpresentation and the option to perform something solo should you feel brave enough. Creative dance workshop.

Suitable for all levels of experience this course is for anyone who would like to dance for fitness and enjoyment and also develop their creative streak. Learn a variety of dance sequences along with strengthening exercises, stretching and relaxation. Learners will be given the opportunity to use their own choreography and work towards group and/or solo pieces.

Family learning

One world. Have fun with pottery, crafts, story telling, face painting, dance, puppet making, books, games, photography and badge making.

Creative crafts. These sessions are split: the first hour comprises of an activity for parent and child to do together. The second hour of the session is for parents only, working on a more long-term project.

Help your child with ICT. This course gives parents an insight into how ICT is taught in schools and gives adults ideas of fun activities to share with their children and a chance to gain a recognised qualification.

What are the term dates for this year?

Summer term: 15 April 2013 to 31 July 2013.

How can I pay? You can pay by cash, card or cheques made payable to London Borough of Southwark Council. If your course is 20 weeks or longer you can pay in instalments. For courses of 20 to 29 weeks you can pay in two instalments of 50%. For courses of 30 weeks or more you can pay in one 50% instalment and two subsequent 25% instalments. You will need to complete a payment option form to qualify for instalment payments. You must complete post-dated cheques for the subsequent payments. Exam fees and materials fees must be paid on enrolment.

Are there any other fees? Some courses, including ceramics and upholstery carry a fee for materials. Please ask for more details. Exam fees must be paid when you enrol.

Can I get a refund? If we cancel a course before the start date we will give you a full refund, and if we close a course after it’s started we’ll give you a part refund. We are unable to refund you if you withdraw from a course unless you are too ill to continue with your studies and have a doctor’s certificate.

Can I change course? If you find that a course isn’t right for you after the first class, you may be able to change to another course. Please ask your tutor for more information.

Can I join a course that has already started? With non exam courses this may be possible, please ask your course tutor for more information and course costs.

What is the age limit? Learners need to be aged 19 years or older on 31 August, unless they are attending a family learning session with a parent.

What do I need to bring to enrol, or for a skills check?

UK/EU citizen –your passport or ID card and proof of benefit eligibility

Non EU citizen –your passport showing indefinite leave to remain, and proof of benefit eligibility

Asylum seekers (and those whose applications have been turned down but are unable to return home)

–Letter with your home office reference number, proof of benefit or proof of permission to work

–An application registration card (ARC) plus recent copy of

–Confirmation from the Home Office of Section 4 support within three months of the issue date
