On the Cover: From high school students to returning adults, over 1,400 grads and their families celebrated 2017 graduation This year’s SPSCC commencement ceremony was one to remember. Between the location change to Ingersoll Stadium and record-breaking attendance of family and friends, SPSCC celebrated its 1,411 outstanding graduates from the 2016-17 school year.
Congratulations and welcome to SPSCC! We’re here to help you ‘sail and prevail’ on your voyage to a brighter future. Running Start Student Nikita Salas, 2017 student speaker Nikita Salas attended SPSCC as a Running Start student through Timberline High School and graduated with an Associate in Arts degree. While at SPSCC, Salas served two years on the Campus Activities Board and participated actively in the College's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center. She plans to attend Western Washington University in the fall and continue a path of leadership and service in her new community. Returning Adult Student Jameson Paulk, 2017 graduate and continuing student Jameson Paulk graduated from the Culinary Arts program and already has plans to return to earn an Associate in Arts degree in Business Administration. “Opening up a small restaurant in Lacey is my goal,” said Paulk. He attended commencement with his wife Victoria and three children as a perfect example of overcoming the challenges that come with balancing family and school.

Fill out the FAFSA to apply for financial aid and scholarships. Then visit the Financial Aid Portal to ensure your financial aid application is complete.

COMPLETE THE FAFSA Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov starting on October 1 for the following school year. List SPSCC as your school. Our School Code is 005372.
CHECK PORTAL FOR NEEDED INFORMATION Be sure that you’ve provided everything necessary to process financial aid. Visit your Financial Aid Portal to find out if anything else is needed from you. spscc.edu/financial-aid
MAKE YOUR DEADLINES Completed financial aid applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit applications by the deadlines to be notified of your financial aid eligibility before tuition is due. Apply early and check on your status at the Financial Aid Portal.

NOTEWORTHY Trustee Barbara Clarkson honored with 2017 ACT Equity Award SPSCC celebrates Trustee Barbara Clarkson’s receipt of the 2017 ACT Equity Award. The Equity Award, presented by the Washington State Association of College Trustees, recognizes exemplary commitment to achieve equity in the development, administration, and delivery of educational programs and services in the community and technical college system. The Board was compelled to nominate Trustee Clarkson because of her lifelong dedication to equity in education and impact at SPSCC and throughout Thurston County.

Nursing Program earns pre-accreditation status Nurse Pinning Ceremony 2017
SPSCC Board of Trustees
The National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation has granted the SPSCC Nursing Program pre-accreditation status, the first step to achieving national accreditation. The next step requires the program to submit a self-study report and schedule an on-site evaluation, expected to happen by fall of 2018. “This pre-accreditation phase speaks to the quality and forward movement of our program,” said Associate Dean of Nursing Laurie Choate. The program is the first in Washington State to implement an Associate of Nursing Direct Transfer Agreement degree, which allows graduates to seamlessly move to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program. Graduates from 2016 and 2017 programs have been accepted to bachelor’s programs and hired at local health facilities.
Southwest Washington Juried Exhibition awards announced Each year, artists from southwest Washington are invited to submit their works to the Southwest Washington Juried Exhibition. At the July 6 opening reception, exhibition juror Amy McBride selected purchase and merit awards from the 42 works in the show. Congratulations to the winners!
