Winter is the perfect time to stay inside, hold a warm mug, and hit the books. However, not everyone is so fortunate to have shelter during these cold winter months. This is a reminder to give back to your community. A great way to help right here on campus is to contribute to the Food Pantry. Cash donations are accepted through the SPSCC Foundation. If you would like to donate food, please give to the Thurston County Food Bank. You can also give back by volunteering at the Food Pantry or Food Bank. By lending a helping hand, you plant seeds of compassion and courage into our community, resulting in a thriving foundation for generations to come. On the Cover: The SPSCC Food Pantry Brings Resources Closer to Students “I’ve done a lot of projects but this has been absolutely the most gratifying experience; being able to actually look at something that was my idea and got so much help with, it’s really just become a much bigger part than I thought it would be on this campus.” - Kate Armstrong Remarkable SPSCC alumna Kate Armstrong left a huge impact on her community and alma mater. Starting out as an idea to create a place on campus aimed to ensure food security for students in need has since manifested into reality. Armstrong, Student Senator of Legislative Affairs for the 2016-17 school year, was the catalyst that brought this resource to the campus community. Armstrong was inspired by the story of a woman she met through the Washington Community Technical College Student Association program, where Armstrong was a delegate representing SPSCC for the Southwest Region. “She told me she was living outside the school, eating through the dumpster and showering in the locker room before class. She said that 15 other students did that with her and some of them were as young as 18. That was incredibly hard to hear. We talked as a region about establishing a pantry for our individual schools because homelessness and access to food are not isolated incidents,” said Armstrong. Last November, Armstrong brought the on-site food pantry proposal to a Senate Meeting and it was approved. The project has taken a year to manifest and will be a great addition to helping students in need, being an accessible food source for the community. Sarah Hussain, Food Pantry Coordinator, has since taken over the project since Armstrong has graduated. The Food Pantry is a satellite food bank supported by the Thurston County Food Bank that will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m in the Student Union Building (SUB). The Food Pantry will offer free non-perishable food items, hygiene kits, and children’s books to all SPSCC students and the community. The YWCA of Olympia will provide the hygiene kits and the South Sound Reading Foundation will provide the children’s books. More information at: spscc.edu/student-life/food-pantry

Activate your new student email and log in to the college network. Check it daily for important messages from the College.
4. ASSESS YOUR SKILLS
Fill out the FAFSA to apply for financial aid and scholarships. Then visit the Financial Aid Portal to ensure your financial aid application is complete.
Take the College Placement Test or submit your high school or college transcripts. Attend an optional free Test Prep Workshop before the test.
5. ATTEND ADVISING & REGISTRATION (NSAR) Sign up for NSAR 3-4 weeks before new student registration. Sign up ASAP to get an early shot at registering for the classes you want.

She will be using her experience with creating the pantry to assist WWU with the start-up of their own food pantry in the next few months. In the meantime, she is working with Compass 2 Campus, a program to partner mentors with K-12 students to help increase retention rates.

COMPLETE THE FAFSA Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov starting on October 1 for the following school year. List SPSCC as your school. Our School Code is 005372.
CHECK PORTAL FOR NEEDED INFORMATION Be sure that you’ve provided everything necessary to process financial aid. Visit your Financial Aid Portal to find out if anything else is needed from you. spscc.edu/financial-aid
MAKE YOUR DEADLINES Completed financial aid applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit applications by the deadlines to be notified of your financial aid eligibility before tuition is due. Apply early and check on your status at the Financial Aid Portal.

Foundation’s Annual Experience Gala For the first time in SPSCC history, $500,000 will be given out in scholarships throughout the 2017-18 school year to enhance student success. Elected officials, local donors, community businesses, and more joined together on Oct. 7, 2017, for an evening of celebration focused on the future success of our students. The annual scholarship fundraiser had its second consecutive most successful year in a row. History Professor, Social Science and Business As a Navy veteran, Eric Chase was able to see how politics influenced the world first-hand. He continued his education at The Evergreen State College, since then he has been teaching for 17 years as an adjunct faculty member at SPSCC, with additional teaching experience at local high schools, The Evergreen State College, and Saint Martin’s University. During his time at SPSCC, Chase has been co-faculty advisor for the successful BRICK club at SPSCC. The club increased community knowledge on how to organize political campaigns successfully, use community resources, and empowered students to create a better world. Chase is passionate about Native rights and is an Olympia Film Society volunteer.

Recognizing New Faculty: Eric Chase

Amanda Howard bounced back from life’s challenges during her freshman year of college and found out that her passion for education was in her reach all along. Amanda graduated with an AA from SPSCC in 2016. She then transferred to Saint Martin’s University to get a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Currently, she is completing her last semester as a junior. Amanda first started her college career at Central Washington University. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw due to her battle with an eating disorder. She moved home and began outpatient treatment while attending SPSCC. Since then, Amanda has recovered and has been in remission for over three years. SPSCC English Professor Nancy Miller is one of Amanda's memorable influences, “I learned a lot about myself. Nancy had me dig deeper into writing my own story.” Advance

Jan. 13, 2018 at 6 p.m. Activist Tamika Mallory is a champion for social justice and leader in grassroots campaigns involving gun violence, women’s rights, and police violence. Mallory was co-president for the worldwide Women’s March protest in 2017, the largest single day protest in U.S. history. Mallory will be the keynote speaker for SPSCC’s annual banquet, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy.
