On the Cover: Sound of Success – Chivan Lim for #liveSPSCC How Chivan Lim’s love of music is driving his success at SPSCC and beyond. The Student Union Building is empty as Chivan thumbs through his phone, looking for the perfect tune. He knows it when he finds it, flicks the volume up and spins out into the empty space in front of the stage, whirling into handstands, defying gravity with breakdance moves, and tracing every beat through the air with muscle and concentration.
The B-Boy
“Music, it’s, like, what wakes me up in the morning,” Chivan says of his passion for dance and playing. “I know I’ve got to go dance. I know I’ve got to play some guitar.” Chivan has spent his time taking classes towards a transfer degree while immersing himself in the musical communities that SPSCC fosters, including the jazz band and the student dance club. When he’s not practicing his dance moves in the SUB, he’s strumming his guitar while sitting with friends or scrolling through YouTube videos of breakdance masters while waiting in the hall for class to start. The school has proved a fertile place to cultivate his musical chops. He recently joined the jazz ensemble and leads the student dance club, which coordinated a flash mob performance at Capital Mall this past holiday season. “To be able to share my dance knowledge with other people and for them to bring stuff to me is incredible.” He says, “I couldn’t really ask for anything better.” After graduating SPSCC, Chivan hopes to make music his life’s work. He plans to transfer to Western Washington University and earn a degree in music performance, focusing on guitar. Classes in music theory and music appreciation have both fed his passion and moved him down the path towards graduation. “Any music class, I can always relate to,” he says, saying one of his favorites was a hip-hop culture class. “Coming from a b-boy, breakdance background, it means so much to be taking this hip hop class because I can kind of relate to my roots.” For Chivan, music is more than a hobby: it is community, possibility, and the force that feeds his determination to graduate and succeed. “Music keeps me motivated.”

President Tim Stokes earns ACT Chief Executive Officer Award
Culinary Arts accreditation visit receives a perfect score
Awarded annually by the Washington State Association of College Trustees (ACT), the Chief Executive Officer Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in furthering the mission of community and technical colleges. SPSCC president Tim Stokes is this year’s award recipient. Stokes became the third president of SPSCC in 2013 and has led the college through steady student enrollment during economic flux. He has been instrumental in the attainment of millions of dollars in grants to support student success and has seen improved student completion rates while the student population has diversified.
The Culinary Arts program received a perfect score at the American Culinary Federation (ACF) accreditation visit on April 24–26. ACF evaluators noted zero areas of non-compliance with ACF policies and procedures. They also noted the program's culture of camaraderie, professionalism, alignment with current industry trends, and industry impact. The program was granted a five-year certification, the longest certification offered to programs with zero points of non-compliance.
Student Town Hall with Rep. Beth Doglio and Sen. Sam Hunt The Student Senate along with president Tim Stokes and 60 students welcomed Rep. Beth Doglio and Sen. Sam Hunt from the 22nd Legislative District to campus on April 17. After a recap of the legislative session and its impact on higher education, students engaged the legislators surrounding a broad variety of topics, including Running Start, Initiative 940, animal breed restrictions, animal rights, and Open Educational Resources to help with textbook affordability. Student Daniela Suarez, ASB Senator of Legislative Affairs, arranged the event.
Six Automotive and Welding Club students earn medals at SkillsUSA Students were accompanied by their professors/club advisors Alex Wittmann, Dan Main, and Steve McRavin to the spring Leadership and Skills Conference at Columbia Basin College on April 20–21. Two of these students will have an opportunity to compete in the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY., in June.
