Michael Kaeshammer | Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 | 5:30 p.m.
Canadian jazz pianist-singer-songwriter Michael Kaeshammer is a two-time Juno Award winner with a recording career that spans twelve albums. Famous worldwide for his unique boogie-woogie piano style, with heavy influence from the iconic musical culture of New Orleans, Kaeshammer’s dynamic full-band performance will be showcased at the annual The Experience fundraising gala.

Alina Fernández | Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 | 7:30 p.m.
Alina Fernández, novelist, activist, and radio show host, is internationally famous for her autobiography "Castro's Daughter: An Exile's Memoir of Cuba". Fernández will speak of growing up in Cuba as Fidel Castro’s daughter in the political environment of the 1960’s and 70’s and her later departure, as well as provide insight into the country’s future and great potential, with a Q&A to follow. 1

In partnership with the Thurston Group of Washington State, South Puget Sound Community College hosts the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet in January each year. Awards presented at this event include scholarships to high school students from the three Thurston County School Districts, and scholarships to second year students enrolled at SPSCC. Winona LaDuke | Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019 | 7:30 p.m.
Writer and political activist Winona LaDuke is a widely-recognized and outspoken advocate of Native American causes, writing extensively about human rights, Native land reclamation, and environmental justice. LaDuke will hold a lecture on her causes and organizations, including the Honor the Earth and the White Earth Land Recovery Project, with time to dive deeper through a Q&A session. Sponsored by

James McBride | Thursday, May 30, 2019 | 7:30 p.m.
Writer, journalist, and jazz musician James McBride is widely recognized for his landmark memoir “The Color of Water”, which discusses the complexities of race and identity growing up in an interracial family. Following a lively opening from SPSCC’s own jazz students, McBride will take the stage for a night of truly unforgettable music.

Carol Hannum: Worlds Apart | Sept. 10 – Oct. 19, 2018
A retrospective of paintings, drawings, and handmade books by artist and educator Carol Hannum. Formerly a faculty member at South Puget Sound Community College, Carol has actively contributed to the development of the arts in education and the South Sound community. This collection of works highlights her dedication to her craft and her unique approaches to the shared art experience. Opening reception: Friday, Sept. 21 (6 – 8 P.M.)

An exhibition incorporating textiles created by children in grades K through 12 in collaboration with skilled and experienced Panorama artists. Participating Schools include River Ridge High School, Lakes Elementary, Evergreen Forest Elementary, Nisqually Middle School, South Bay Elementary, Lydia Hawk Elementary, Woodland Elementary, Pleasant Glade Elementary, Lacey Elementary, and East Olympia Elementary, and Tumwater. Fine Art Postcard Exhibition “While you were out” | Jan. 2 – Feb. 1, 2019 An annual event that brings the local creative community together under one theme. The 2019 theme is “While You Were Out”. Postcard sized original artworks, created by artists of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, will be sold through silent auction. All are invited to join the creative celebration! Native American Art Exhibition | Feb. 8 – March 8, 2019
A themed exhibition, shaped and selected by Native guest curators, which will engage viewers and the community and celebrate the art and culture of our Native community members. Award winning artists from the 2018 Southwest Washington Juried Exhibition, selected by juror Asia Tail, are invited back to show new work in this group exhibition. SPSCC art students, led by a visiting artist, will participate in a multi-session workshop that culminates in an exhibition of the work in The Gallery. 13th Annual SPSCC Student Art Exhibition | May 13 – June 14, 2019
Curated by the art faculty, this exhibition features outstanding student work from studio classes in the 2018-19 year. Works include ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, digital photography, mixed-media, 2D and 3D design exercises, and sculpture. A continuous slide show of student work is also included in the exhibition. Opening reception: Friday, May 17 (6 – 8 P.M.)

2019 Southwest Washington Juried Exhibition | July 9 – Aug. 23, 2019
Artists residing in Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, Skamania, Thurston, and Wahkiakum counties are invited to submit work in any media for review by a guest juror and possible inclusion in the exhibition. Purchase prizes and honorable mention prizes will be awarded. Award winners will be invited to exhibit together during the next exhibition season. Opening reception: Thursday, July 11 (6 – 9 P.M.)

The South Puget Sound Community College Chamber Choir and the South Puget Sound Community Choir team up each quarter for a wide range of vocal performances. In the past, the choirs have celebrated American music, holiday and seasonal favorites, the works of classic composers, and more.

South Puget Sound College Orchestra The South Puget Sound College Orchestra is an auditioned performing group of 65 students and community members ranging in age from 18 to 80. Directed by SPSCC music professor Cameron May, the orchestra presents a three-concert season of standard orchestral repertoire and solo concertos. Performances are held in the beautiful and acoustically rewarding Main Stage of the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts. In its 5th season this fall, the orchestra has grown a reputation for world class musical performances.

South Puget Sound Jazz Band The South Puget Sound Jazz Band is comprised of exceptional local talent from SPSCC, The Evergreen State College, and community members. The Jazz Band comes together at the end of each quarter to perform various ensemble arrangements to feature bebop, Latin jazz, and funk jazz standards. Come see the South Puget Sound Jazz Band and get your toe tapping along to the beat.

From re-imagined classical plays to cutting edge new works and musicals, the SPSCC Theatre Program brings daring, enchanting, and provocative performances to the beautiful Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts Main Stage and intimate Black Box Theatre.
