Dear Generous Partners, 2018 was a great year at the South Puget Sound Community College Foundation. Our mission to support success for all students shined as we awarded more scholarships and student success grants than ever, launched our Alumni Association, and acquired our single largest donation in Foundation history. We are proud of this growth and it has come at a critical time. For the past several years, we have been working to increase diversity, close the achievement gap, and meet the financial needs of all students. We believe if students want to attend college, financial resources should not stop them. Our students are the future. They are our legacy. They are and will be Making the Sound for years to come. We Make the Sound now because when it comes to student success, we can’t stay silent.
In the year ahead, we look forward to launching a significant campaign for SPSCC that will help more students. Supporting success for all students is our mission. Student Success Student Success is the work of the SPSCC Foundation to ensure students have resources to stay on track to graduate. We do this by offering emergency assistance, closing the gap on financial aid, and promoting innovative solutions to community needs.
Student Success wraps around students to ensure that students stay where they belong — in school. Student Success grants range from a completion fund for students in their last quarter of college, a testing fund for students preparing to take GED® tests or college readiness tests, an emergency fund for students experiencing unexpected financial hardship, and a tools and supplies fund for students in technical programs needing uniforms or equipment as part of their course work. They also support important college programs such as the campus Food Pantry, first generation students in IGNITE, and ongoing innovations to make sure every student has the financial means to succeed in college.
For students living paycheck to paycheck, the difference between making it or breaking it in college are profoundly impacted by repairing a car, funding a medical emergency, avoiding eviction, or even buying school books.

Increasing Fundraising and Connections to Support Students $1.2 million in-kind gift of the Louis Walker Middleton Building is largest in Foundation history The Louis Walker Middleton Building was acquired through a generous donation from the estate of Dr. Angela Bowen. The building, now recognized as the Dr. Angela Bowen Center for Health Education, will expand SPSCC health education programs in the coming years. The Experience brings in more donor contributions than ever (see page 12) 2018 was the SPSCC Foundation’s most successful fundraising night and we are looking to surpass that record again in 2019. Engaged communities throw Parties for a Purpose (see page 20) Donors and SPSCC Foundation supporters are now welcoming friends and advocates in their homes to throw parties to support SPSCC students. Alumni Association began efforts to connect with 52,000 SPSCC alumni The Alumni Association, launched in 2018, began to connect with former students and plans to expand in the coming year. Students can now apply for Student Success grants online After streamlining online scholarship applications, we did the same for grants in 2018. Students can now quickly apply for emergency funding online, any time of the year. Foundation receives commendations from national accreditation agency Accreditation is a status a college earns to show that it maintains the high standards set by the accrediting agency. Part of accreditation includes an on-site visit by commission representatives. During an onsite visit in 2018, the SPSCC Foundation was given a Commendation, recognizing our exceptional service to students through our Student Success funding. A culture of volunteerism is on the rise In 2018, SPSCC was recognized by the Washington’s Combined Fund Drive as #3 in volunteerism in higher education in the state.

DEIC Renamed to Honor Barbara Clarkson At a dedication event on March 20, 2019, SPSCC announced that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center (DEIC) within the Center for Student Success was renamed the “A. Barbara Clarkson Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center”. The SPSCC Board of Trustees passed a unanimous vote in December 2018, to honor the work of recently retired trustee A. Barbara Clarkson, a tireless advocate for equity and access to education. During Clarkson’s 14 years as a member of the Board, the college expanded student access through seven new buildings on the Olympia Campus and by founding the Lacey Campus. For several years, Clarkson served as the liaison to the SPSCC Foundation, committing her own time and resources to connect the Foundation to the community and create a network devoted to supporting student success. Through her work with the Thurston Group of Washington State, she championed access to higher education for African-American and underrepresented students, sending hundreds of youth from the Pacific Northwest to college with over $8 million in scholarships. ♦ SPSCC Alumni Bryan Barnett and student Vanessa Enendu with Barbara Clarkson at the dedication ceremony

The Tonelli Story “To live, to learn, to love, and to leave a legacy.” - Richard Tonelli The story of Richard and Karen Tonelli and their family, full of warmth, loss, and unanticipated but profound connection, shows us how compassion can impact students across generations and worlds.
from Ohio State University. She started her own business called Color Design, which specified interior and exterior materials and colors, aiding in the design of many public buildings in the Puget Sound for over 20 years. They are both longtime philanthropists who have supported colleges and educators across the Puget Sound area.
Richard and Karen Richard is a lifelong pilot and a UW aeronautical engineer. He served in the Air Force and then went on to Pan American, TWA, Aerojet, and Boeing, retiring from TWA. His wife Karen graduated from Grays Harbor Community College, Western Washington University, and received a master’s degree
Theresa and Nancy Richard and Karen’s granddaughter Theresa studied at SPSCC, where she took English courses with professor Nancy Miller. While she was studying, Theresa would show her homework to Richard and Karen, speaking highly of Nancy and the feedback she would leave on her papers. Richard still has a copy of

Theresa’s homework assignment - an essay on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave - with Nancy’s positive comments filling the margins. Nancy’s unceasing encouragement of their granddaughter’s studies compelled Richard and Karen to act. They began donating anonymously to the SPSCC Foundation in 2017, with one condition: Nancy would choose to use the gift however she saw fit. Connection through daughters, connection through grief Nancy’s daughter Rachel was a rising star who lost her life to addiction at a young age. Nancy even wrote a book, Griefland, based on this experience. Nancy chose to use this new gift from the anonymous donors to create the Rachel Joanne Weiner Scholarship, which gives preference to students recovering from substance abuse. Unknown to Nancy, however, Karen had a daughter who had also struggled with addiction and who – like Rachel – lost her life at a young age. Richard and Karen discovered Nancy’s book and their unique connection of losing – and grieving for – their daughters further strengthened the profound kinship they felt with Nancy. The meeting Richard and Karen had been private supporters of the college for many years when, in 2017, they decided to surprise Nancy in person and go public with their support. Nancy stepped into the hallway. Amidst the crowd, two individuals stood out to her, and she instinctively knew who they were. Donors, beneficiaries, parents – they were all these, but in that exact moment they were people who had shared and understood the grief that comes with losing someone they Annual Report | 2018
love. They were people who endured, who continue to honor their loved ones’ memories and who continue to feel the void created by their daughters’ passing. They wept and marveled at the circumstances that brought them together. Kindred spirits were born that day. Not the end of a story, but the beginning of another In 2018, Karen gracefully ended her ongoing battle with cancer and Richard lost the love of his life. Reeling from this loss, Richard reached out to Nancy for support. Nancy assisted in writing Karen’s beautiful obituary. To date, Nancy and her husband remain close friends with Richard. Theresa has since moved on from SPSCC. She is considering a career as a teacher, following Nancy’s footsteps. Nancy, for her part, is still teaching and the scholarship she set up from Richard’s and Karen’s gift is helping pay for tuition for students who have struggled with addiction in their lives. One recipient in particular was at first struggling with homelessness but has since gone on to graduate and to start his own business. The Tonellis’ gift continues to pay it forward. Richard is still learning to live life without his true love. He continues to focus on his family, ensuring he is always there to support his daughter throughout her education. Karen believed that people should never underestimate humanity’s ability to do good for one another: Richard intends to keep Karen’s legacy alive. One gift brought four people together. One gift has helped three students so far. One gift continues to write stories for those whose lives it will continue to touch. One gift is changing lives forever. ♦

In 2013, Zak was tired of working full time in different retail positions when he decided to begin studying at SPSCC. His professors, particularly Lynette Rushton, inspired his direction. After SPSCC, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, intent on pursuing a career in quantum computing or robotics. Now he’s a graduate student at Northeastern University in Seattle, channeling his passions into using data-driven solutions to inspire future leaders and solve complex problems. Zak recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Health and Wellness Center at SPSCC – a project he worked on during his time as ASB president. He’s come far in his yearslong journey through education, but it was in his humble beginnings at SPSCC that he found his direction, began to inspire others, and lay the foundation for his own path to success. ♦

The Experience Gets Louder Our annual fundraising gala, The Experience, has grown in many ways over the past five years. Over 400 guests attended last year’s New Orleans themed event, raising the bar for Student Success once again.

Legacy Giving Make more than a donation, make a legacy.
Through a planned gift, you or your family can make a meaningful, everlasting legacy for yourselves and future generations of SPSCC students. A legacy gift is a charitable donation to the college from your estate assets. Often received after one’s lifetime, these gifts are referred to as deferred or planned gifts. A legacy gift allows you to control the use of your gift to benefit your own financial future and take advantage of tax benefits. A legacy gift can include cash, bequests, trusts, stock, life insurance, annuities, and more. The benefits of planned giving include: > Federal income tax charitable deductions; > Reduced and deferred capital gains taxes on appreciated property; > Reduction of your taxable estate; and/or > Enhanced income from periodic cash distributions.

Looking Ahead Dr. Angela Bowen Center for Health Education In 2018, the largest single donation in college history was made to the SPSCC Foundation. Thanks to the generosity of the estate of Dr. Angela Bowen, a medical pioneer and philanthropist, the Louis Walker Middleton Building was acquired by South Puget Sound Community College. The $1.19 million in-kind donation will allow the building to house the college’s growing health education programs. The Foundation will also be moving to the building. This single gift will make a legacy through the many healthcare professionals that enter the workforce via SPSCC. The Foundation extends a special thanks to Dr. Bowen’s long-time friend, collague, and executor of her estate, Ted Schultz.
Health and Wellness Center In 2017, SPSCC students voted to create a Health and Wellness Center at the college’s Olympia Campus, funded by student fees. The center will include a renovated gymnasium, a new auxiliary gymnasium, weight room, cardio room, and additional study spaces. Construction is now under way on the project, which is expected to be complete in summer 2020. The project is designed by KMB Architects with construction by Pease Construction.

Be a Soundmaker This year, turn up the volume on student success by being a Soundmaker and making a contribution that ensures all SPSCC students have the sound foundation they need to succeed, which our regional economy needs to grow.
Create a scholarship > Honor the legacy of a loved one by creating a scholarship in their name. > If you received financial support for your own education, consider doing the same for others. > Contribute to our community’s economic development by funding students — our future workforce.
Make some noise for Student Success by throwing a party The SPSCC Foundation can help create invitations and work with you as you prepare your home for an event to support a cause to help students. In 2018, the SPSCC Foundation partnered with community advocates to support our students. Leonor Fuller, Michelle Wickett, and Cheryl Duryea hosted parties to support the SPSCC Food Pantry. David Marks and John Doan hosted a party to support a new LGBTQ+ Student Success Fund. Contact the SPSCC Foundation if would like to host a Party for a Purpose or create a scholarship or student success fund. Michelle Wickett hosts a party in her home to support the SPSCC Food Pantry.
