15 years later: meet alumna Doty Catlin
Graduating with an associate degree in business was Doty’s single goal. SPSCC helped her reach it—and taught her an important life lesson in self-care.

It was Doty Catlin’s second attempt at college. Back in 1990, she began at Grays Harbor College, but her studies quickly halted after getting married and having a baby. But when Doty enrolled at SPSCC in 2002, she was a recently single mom who knew that going back to school would provide a sound future for her daughter. “She was 11 when I started at SPSCC, in junior high.”

Doty dove in quickly to make the most of her second chance, working at the college’s Access Services office and taking mostly business-focused classes. But she also made a point to take a physical education class each quarter. “Yoga was my favorite,” she says. “As a full-time mom and full-time student, it was the one hour a day where I found my peace.” Doty quickly learned that taking care of herself was a good thing for the other parts of her life, too. She made family life fun by competing with her daughter to see who could get the best grades, and made connections across campus through her Work Study job. “I really got a sense of community,” she says. “I felt like I belonged.”

Finally achieving her goal in 2004, the mother, student, employee, and self-believer graduated with her AA in Business and a new outlook on life. Doty has spent the 15 years since her graduation focused on herself, becoming an established loan officer and yoga instructor in Olympia. At loanDepot, Doty connects buyers with their dream homes, helping them discover home ownership and learn fiscal responsibility. At True Self Yoga, she teaches two classes per week and works with kids at yoga camp during the summer. She also volunteers for Empowerment4Girls and AWE (Artists With Ecology).

NOTEWORTHY SPSCC welcomes Andrew Green as Head Men's Basketball Coach Though it’s a big change of scenery for the Missouri native, Andrew Green admits the Pacific Northwest has long been a target for him, his wife Marilyn, and their shih tzu-terrier Pearl—with the city of Olympia being the perfect size for their family, and SPSCC representing an opportunity to work within the community college system. Green has coached several sports over his 11-year career, but basketball has always been his passion. Most recently, he finished his fifth season as Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Westminster College, an NCAA Division III institution. He received his Bachelor’s in History from Central Methodist University in 2009 and finished his Master’s in Education, Curriculum & Instruction in 2014 at William Woods University. With Clippers Men’s Basketball coming off their third consecutive NWAC Regional Championship title, Green recognizes the big shoes he has to fill in the wake of Coach Aaron Landon’s departure. “[He] did a great job,” Green said. “Not just with the program, but also in his impact on campus as an educational planner.” Green looks to his dual role as coach and educational planner as a welcome continuation. He’s been passionate about academic support throughout his career, working both as an admissions counselor for international students and later as Director of Student Involvement at Westminster. According to SPSCC Athletics Director Vernell Willingham, this experience makes him a uniquely qualified choice: “His duties were conducive to what we were looking for in a coach—not just for the student athletes he assisted, but also their development on and off the court. We want to continue down the road of success we’ve had these past few years, and we believe he’s the right candidate for the job.” Green is eager to get to work—the 2019-2020 season begins in September and he’s already begun preparing for his first recruiting ventures. The team has several vacancies from outgoing sophomores. He says that in the near future it will be important to “ensure that returning players mesh with our new faces”. Ninkasi Brewing joins SPSCC in the upcoming Tumwater Craft District Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing announced plans to open a tasting room at the Tumwater Craft District, currently under construction near the old Olympia Brewing Co. building. Currently the 35th largest craft brewery in the country, Ninkasi also plans to lend its expertise to SPSCC's craft brewing and distilling program, which will also be housed in the district on its completion. The collaboration will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities with brewing equipment and techniques, and give them first-hand exposure to the business and hospitality side of the industry. In addition to its own products, Ninkasi plans to make available the beer that emerges from SPSCC's program to the community. It joins the Gig Harbor-based Heritage Distilling in the district, also a partner of the SPSCC program.
