Dear friends, Thank you for your support of the South Puget Sound Community College Foundation. This year’s annual report is full of great information and your generosity has made this year an exciting one! The 2017 annual report shows a 54% increase in revenue from 2016 to 2017. The Foundation received $2,613,260 through donations, in-kind contributions and investment revenue this year! That is an increase of over $900,000 over the last year. That says so much about the support from donors and community members like you. Your gifts are making an impact in the lives of many students in our community!! We are proud of many things this year and we look forward to sharing them with you. Read on to hear about the opening of the SPSCC Food Pantry, launching the new Alumni Association and creating new Student Success Funding opportunities for students. STUDENT PROFILE: Julisia Brock Julisia Brock graduated from Olympia High School. After going through the college application process, she realized the cost of attending a four-year university was immense. As a first generation college student, Julisia began to fear college was out of her reach. She researched her college options and soon discovered SPSCC to be the perfect fit. SPSCC offered the financial support and academic resources that would allow her to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. Julisia developed a passion for helping others early in life and chose to pursue a career in the healthcare field, stating, “I know that my journey in higher education has just begun, but I will stop at nothing to improve the lives of others through my work as a dentist. I view healthcare as a fundamental basic need, and I want to help families in our community who do not have the necessary funds to see the dentist.“ A recipient of the Dr. Kenneth and Elaine Minnaert Presidential Endowed Scholarship, Julisia expressed her gratitude to the donors, saying, “Please rest assured that I will make the most of the investment you have made in me. This scholarship will allow me to do something that neither of my parents had the opportunity to do, and that is to go to college. I hope that as a student at SPSCC, a member of the Olympia community, and as a future dentist, I can make you proud and honor the legacy of this phenomenal scholarship.”

YEAR IN HIGHLIGHTS Center for Transition Studies
The new Center for Transition Studies opened on Dec. 12, 2017. Located next to the Student Union Building in the heart of campus, the Center is dedicated to the success of adult learners, including Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, HighSchool 21+ and GED, Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training, Integrated English Language and Civics Education, and Intensive English for International Students.
Health & Wellness Center
In 2017, students voted to have a quarterly fee assessed to pay for a proposed $16 million, 39,150 square-foot Health & Wellness Center on the Olympia campus. To create the center, the college plans to expand the current 21,000-square-foot gym and connect it to building 33. The remodel will create an auxiliary gym, additional locker and team rooms, a wellness cafe, more student meeting space and a training room/ sports medicine facility. CNA Accelerator Program
SPSCC is collaborating with local healthcare organizations to train and hire students as nursing assistants. Theseemployers will each select ten aspiring Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) to receive a sponsorship that will fully fundtheir education, supplies, and certification costs.
Craft Brewing and Distilling
SPSCC is exploring an opportunity to partner with Craft District, LLC, to lease space in a craft brewing and distillingcenter that will serve as the long-term home of SPSCC’s new Craft Brewing and Distilling degree program.SPSCC hopes to lease up to 10,000 square feet of space that will include classrooms, labs, small scale productionspace, offices, and a conference room. SPSCC’s new Craft Brewing and Distilling program is launching in fall 2018. Students in the program will complete 95 credits in classes covering business fundamentals, fermentation science, compliance and legal issues, and product development and will receive an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree.
CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM In November 2017, the Culinary Arts program at SPSCC in Olympia hosted the first of many wine-paired dinners in the college’s Percival Restaurant. In attendance were nearly 50 college and community members, including SPSCC president Tim Stokes. “I was beaming with pride for our students, chefs, and culinary team. They delivered a true gastronomic experience.” Professor and Chef Scott McLean prepared the exclusive menu and pairings along with the students and catering staff. Prior to joining SPSCC’s program in 2016, Chef McLean was the Executive Chef at the Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center in Walla Walla. His long career spent opening restaurants and leading other chefs across cities and states brings incredible value to the Culinary Arts program. While the Percival Restaurant plans to continue its quarterly wine-paired meals, they are also open to the community for lunch from Monday to Thursday and offer special reservations, catering, and event and meeting space. FOUNDATION GRANTS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS COMPLETION FUND
EMERGENCY FUND
The completion fund is for certificate and degreeseeking students in their last quarter at SPSCC before graduation. Maximum award is $1,000.
The emergency fund is available to all students experiencing an immediate financial hardship. Frequent applicant requests include rent, power bill, car repair, and groceries. Emergency grants may be applied for once per academic year. Maximum award is $500.
Automotive Completion Fund SPSCC Completion Fund TESTING FUND The testing fund is available to students taking or preparing to take GED tests for high school equivalency and to assess college readiness. Testing funds may be requested multiple times in an academic year. Award amount varies. Opendahl GED Testing Fund SPSCC Testing Fund SPS Rotary GED Testing Fund
TOOLS & SUPPLIES FUND The tools & supplies fund is for students in vocational-technical programs that require uniforms, equipment and supplies as part of their course work. Maximum award is $500.

The Foundation is passionately working to decrease the $1 million+ unmet need with a strategic plan that begins with informing the community about this significant barrier to funding education.

FEATURE: SPSCC FOOD PANTRY
SPSCC Food Pantry Opens SPSCC cut the ribbon on the new Food Pantry at the Olympia campus on Oct. 12, 2017. The Pantry is a unique, collaborative community partnership between SPSCC’s Student Senate, the SPSCC Foundation, and the Thurston County Food Bank. The Pantry is open three days a week in the Student Union Building and offers free non-perishable food items, hygiene kits, and children’s books to all SPSCC students. The YWCA of Olympia provides the hygiene kits and the South Sound Reading Foundation provides the children’s books. Kate Armstrong, Student Senator of Legislative Affairs for the 2016-17 school year, was the catalyst that brought this resource to the campus community. Armstrong was inspired by the story of a woman she met through the Washington Community Technical College Student Association (WACTCSA) program, where Armstrong was a delegate representing SPSCC for the Southwest Region. “She told me she was living outside the school, eating through the dumpster and showering in the locker room before class. She said that 15 other students did that with her and some of them were as young as 18. That was incredibly hard to hear. We talked as a region about establishing a pantry for our individual schools because homelessness and access to food are not isolated incidents,” said Armstrong. In November 2016, Armstrong brought the on-site food pantry proposal to a Senate Meeting and it was approved. The project took an entire year to manifest and is a great addition to helping students in need. For more information about supporting the Food Pantry, contact the Foundation Office.
DONOR PROFILE: JoAnn Ross As a full-time working mom, JoAnn Ross went back to school in her late twenties, attending her local community college at night and every Saturday. Having her husband and son attend her Phi Theta Kappa pin ceremony remains one of the most self-affirming moments of her life. She transferred to ASU with a double major in English and Geography, but rather than work in either field, she wrote a novel. Over the past 36 years she’s published over a hundred novels in various genres f or most of the major New York publishers, with several books spending multiple weeks on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She owes the opportunity to live out her life’s dream to that dedicated community college instructor whose red pencil made her first English 101 paper look like a crime scene. After moving to Olympia and researching South Puget Sound Community College’s excellence in so many areas, she hopes to help other working parents improve their families’ lives through education. Meeting her scholarship recipients truly touched her heart, because in them, she saw her younger self.
DONOR PROFILE: FRANK BYLES COMING FULL CIRCLE In the early 1960's while working for IBM, I used to service and supply equipment and supplies to Olympia Vocational Technical Institute in an old run down building in downtown Olympia. In 1963, I "inherited" my father-in-law’s nursery, including about 148 varieties of Japanese Maple cultivars. Over the years, I enjoyed traveling, meeting people, and collecting and growing the collection to over 800 cultivar varieties of Japanese Maples. This is now the largest collection in the world in one location. The only way a person can get a Japanese Maple is by cloning an existing plant, done almost always by grafting. As a member of IPPS - International Plant Propagators Society - whose motto is "To Seek and to Share", I got into sharing these treasures and found the most wonderful learning experiences. My grafting reputation got around and I ended up teaching the grafting portion of the horticulture classes here at SPSCC. I had my collection at my home which has two-thirds of one acre and mainly hidden from view. All this beauty hidden in one place needed to be displayed. I realized a college campus would be a good place for major viewing, and could be our legacy to society. When I inquired at SPSCC, I was informed they had just built some buildings but had no money to pay for code requirements to enhance the buildings with artwork. Nature provides the absolute best artwork and our Japanese Maples would definitely comply with all requirements. My wife Gudrun "Judy" and I offered to donate a copy of our entire collection if the college would agree to accept our entire collection. We asked that the collection be displayed for the public to enjoy, students to use and learn, and to enhance the value of the entire campus. The college agreed to accept our entire collection as a donation to display in perpetuity to and for the students, staff and public. We look forward to the collection being well maintained for public viewing and pleasure. We would like to see the rest of the collection added to the campus; there are many trees still in pots waiting to say hello to all of you. We would like students to use the trees to learn propagation and care. We have a long history with SPSCC; our son is a graduate of this school and we are pleased to help protect and beautify this campus.
ALUMNI PROFILE: TODD CAFFEY
The SPSCC Foundation is excited to introduce the newly formed Alumni Association. This association will create connections between current students and alumni and provide valuable resources. Some of the initiatives we are working on include a mentorship program, scholarship opportunities, days of service, and more. Todd Caffey had a rough time in high school; at one point during his senior year he was even encouraged to drop out because of his attendance record. He ended up graduating after all with a 2.2 GPA. Due to his grades, he was unable to attend four-year colleges straight out of high school like he wanted. Todd attended SPSCC to get a start at college. SPSCC opened a door of opportunity for him since there wasn’t any necessary requirements to attend unlike four year colleges. He entered his freshman year of college battling his addiction to drugs and alcohol. He almost didn’t continue his education.
While enrolled at SPSCC, his accounting professor became a role model for Todd. “I remember to this day my professor and the climate he created in his classroom. He managed to mix military precision and expectations with a genuine love for his students and a passion for his subject.”
In 2009, the High School Counselor of the Year Award was presented to Todd by the Olympia Tumwater Foundation. Todd currently serves as Tumwater High School’s Diversity Group Advisor and the varsity girl’s golf coach.

Todd graduated from SPSCC, then transferred to The Evergreen State College and received a bachelor’s degree. Todd also has a master’s in Education from the University of Puget Sound. He has been a high school counselor since 2000, starting at Aberdeen High School, and has been at Tumwater High School since 2005.

Todd received treatment and eventually got sober by spring quarter during his first year of college. At that time, he was ready to start a new chapter in his life and was ready to learn. Todd took as many psychology classes as he could and dove into other topics of interest such as sociology, communications, and philosophy. He eventually “discovered a passion for social service.”

When students come into his office discouraged about their grades or other life obstacles, “I just reach into my desk drawer and pull out my own High School Diploma,” said Todd. He uses his own story a lot with his students. “I also encourage them to remember that they are doing the best they can every day.”
