Student-athletes find success & opportunity
Life as a college student is a lot of hard work – especially if you’re a student-athlete. For most Clippers, it’s a full course load while balancing practices, games and scrimmages, and – for many – employment on top of that. But SPSCC students are constantly rising to the challenge, finding success and living a life that speaks to their high aspirations for the future. Some, like Ben Janssan, are keeping their options open. He’s a year away from finishing his Associate of Arts and is figuring out where he’ll go after, but intends to make the most out of his time at SPSCC. Having helped the men’s basketball team take their third consecutive West Regional Championship, Janssan spends his time training, working in the college’s Clipper Café, and studying hard to maintain his 4.0 GPA. NWAC women’s basketball MVP Trinity Betoney is also exploring her next steps: after finishing her AA in the summer, she plans to transfer to a 4-year college to continue her studies and basketball career. She’s keeping up her GPA for a strong finish while considering the offers and scholarships she’s received to play basketball at 4-year schools. Others, like men’s soccer goalie Juan Apaez, work hard to change the path for their family. Soccer runs in Apaez’s family – he’s been playing since he was 5 years old. He balances a part-time job in the oyster industry with his work as a student athlete, and when he graduates in 2020, he’ll be the first in his family to earn a degree. He hopes his hard work will inspire his siblings to follow his footsteps. On a journey of self-discovery, Abigail Green, captain of the women’s volleyball team, rediscovered her passion at SPSCC. She originally studied computer science, but the success and support she found at SPSCC inspired her to dedicate herself to one of her dream careers: becoming an OBGYN. Green works at the Olympia Campus’ Start Here Desk and has a passion for advocating for others; you’ll find her on May 28 in the SUB (Bldg. 27) speaking about depression and the societal stigma against mental illness. These student-athletes are working even harder while their home gym is temporarily closed for renovation and expansion. Students and staff gathered on April 17 for a groundbreaking on the new student-funded Health & Wellness Center, expected to be complete in summer 2020. Future Clipper athletes, as well as all students, staff, and faculty, will get to enjoy a renovated gym, expanded weight room and cardio room options, additional study spaces, and a new café. 2019-20 basketball and volleyball games will be held in the gym at The Evergreen State College. Running Start: Meet Jake & Thanh Running Start is a 26-year-old statewide program that allows high school juniors and seniors to attend community college tuition-free, earn college credits, and transfer to most 4-year colleges and universities in Washington. Students can attend college tuition-free, potentially earning an Associate Degree at the same time as their diploma – but for Running Start students Jake Olson and Thanh Tran, the benefits go beyond the cost savings. Olson, a high school junior who eventually wants to become a psychiatrist, says Running Start has shown him just how big life is outside of the insular high school community. “It helps you realize the world is not just high school,” he explains.
In every quarter she teaches Beginning Drawing, art professor Liza Brenner has her students participate in a collaborative project. Many of these projects are featured all over campus, adding a touch of style to their locales through a variety of subjects and themes. For her winter 2019 class, Brenner presented her students with a list of artists of color from across the globe, and after narrowing down their subjects together, they took on something special: part research project, part collaborative work, they split into groups of five to construct large-scale portraits in mural form. From the surreally apocalyptic art of Chinese artist Zhong Biao to the colorful, urban Mexican-Aztec street art of Curiot, each mural emulates not only the styles and themes of the artist depicted, but also the cultural and political influences at play in their diverse and unique creations. The project allowed the drawing students to refine their portraiture technique and paid tribute to the sheer diversity of art in the world.

Arts Walk: Percival Place at Ben Moore's SPSCC has returned to downtown Olympia for the first time since the 1960s! The spring 2019 Arts Walk debuted Percival Place at Ben Moore’s. Taking full advantage of the location’s bar and performance space, SPSCC students and faculty offered a series of live music, art, and drama performances, short films, and engaging workshops over two days. In addition to the live entertainment, the Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts programs provided an appetizer bar and gourmet chocolates. Guests enjoyed beer and cider from local breweries, including Triceratops and Well 80, and cocktails by Heritage Distilling. Percival Place at Ben Moore’s will play a key role in bringing education and workforce development to downtown Olympia, an important initiative for both SPSCC and the City of Olympia. 7

Ethan is a tinkerer at heart— he has a garage full of projects and tools and fond memories of taking apart his mother’s microwave and using it to burn Lichtenberg fractals into wood.

Ethan spent five years as a Fire Support Specialist in the U.S. Army before a back injury and thirteen surgeries sent him on an unplanned journey into civilian life. He used his vocational rehabilitation veteran benefits to return to school and discovered the Advanced Manufacturing program at SPSCC—along with a new passion for CNC machining. He plans to master the trade before opening a business of his own: a custom mixed manufacturing materials company that also provides educational programs to youths in middle school and high school.
