Brad Thompson and Marilyn Hartley have a lot in common, like that they both chose to build their culinary education at SPSCC after researching many other options. Their local education was the perfect step to creating a locally sourced restaurant in downtown Olympia that has the community buzzing—Our Table. About Brad After ten years of working in restaurants across the state, Brad was ready to supplement his front-of-house experience with skills in the kitchen. He came across the Culinary Arts program at SPSCC and found tremendous value in the program’s accreditation through the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and the program’s popularity. “I was living in Spokane, which meant I commuted every week to Olympia and returned home for the weekends,” said Brad. “SPSCC’s Chef Dan is my sensei. He’s a family guy and really connected with me and made sure I had access to every opportunity possible in the community,” shared Brad. During and after the program, Brad worked for local establishments from receiving to banquets, and then eventually joined up with a partner to open a catering business—which became Our Table in 2015. “Now we’ve got students working in the restaurant and we’re always going to be that way,” said Brad. “We’re going to try to bring as many students in as we can.” Since finishing the program, Brad has kept a strong connection with SPSCC “I’ve filled in as an instructor in the classroom and I’m now part of the Advisory Board for the program,” he said. “It’s so rewarding for me to be able to go back and be somewhat of a peer to the instructors that I worked with.” About Marilyn Marilyn started out in the Baking & Pastry Arts program in 2009 and, after finishing a year later, decided to also take the Culinary Arts program in 2010. “I loved baking and pastry arts so much that I wanted to do two more years of culinary!” she said. This double skillset has made her a highly valuable and well-rounded chef. “Coming to SPSCC was a good decision for me because it was close to home,” shared Marilyn. “I was able to save some money by living at home after high school. My burning motivation was to get out in the workforce and I definitely got that.”

Paying for college is one of the biggest concerns for a lot of families. SPSCC aims to eliminate barriers to education by making it easy for you to get funding for the education you desire. In fact, we award more than 12,000 scholarships and grants to students each year, totaling nearly $10 million!
COMPLETE THE FAFSA Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov starting on October 1 for the following school year. List SPSCC as your school. Our School Code is 005372.
CHECK PORTAL FOR NEEDED INFORMATION Be sure that you’ve provided everything necessary to process financial aid. Visit your Financial Aid Portal to find out if anything else is needed from you. spscc.edu/financial-aid
MEET YOUR DEADLINES Completed financial aid applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit applications by the deadlines to be notified of your financial aid eligibility before tuition is due. Apply early and check on your status at the Financial Aid Portal.

Parenting Education: co-op partners for healthy families SPSCC wants to make a mark on the lives of preschool children—the same children who may even walk across our stage before transferring to a university in 15 years. That's why SPSCC partners with four local co-op preschools to develop well-rounded children and healthy families. While children are enrolled at preschool, parents are enrolled in the college's parenting education classes, where hands-on labs and ongoing feedback are part of the curriculum. Parents also take a role as assistant teachers in the classroom. Scholarships are available for families through the co-ops and through the SPSCC Foundation.
