Maranhao places in Miss Teen Ontario By Sheila McBrayne Sixteen-year-old Tatiana Maranhao of Leamington will be one of 18 girls representing Ontario in the Miss Teen Canada Pageant this summer after placing in the Miss Teen Ontario Pageant this weekend. She will wear the sash of Miss Teen Essex County - World. “It was absolutely amazing!” said Tatiana on Monday about her experience in the Ontario qualifying pageant. Tatiana and her parents Adrian and Domingos travelled to Toronto on Friday, January 18 to prepare for the pageant. This was the first step toward her goal of Miss Teen Canada-Universe, which is being held in Toronto this summer. Tatiana’s inspiration came from her friend Jessica Concalves who competed in the Miss Universe Canada Pageant and placed in the top ten in 2009. “She said it was an amazing experience. Since I’m not old enough for that pageant I applied online for Miss Teen Canada… It’s a long process though,” said Tatiana. She applied in March of 2012 and found out she was accepted to compete at the Ontario competition on August 4. Pageants are held across Canada for contestants from various provinces. Tatiana accumulated 25 local sponsors to support her bid. “Local businesses were very generous,” she said. Contestants were judged on evening gown, swim wear, interview, beauty and poise. There was no talent segment at this level, but is required for the next level. Tatiana plans to sing or dance for her talent. “I didn’t know a lot about pageants and six months later I’ve learned so much… It’s not just about the crown and sash; it’s a chance to get involved with your community,” said Tatiana who is a Grade 11 student at Leamington’s Cardinal Carter Secondary School. The pageant contestants also raise money for Free the Children. If Tatiana wins, she will be required to attend three major events in the community. “But it would be a lot more than that because I absolutely love being involved… I never thought about it before, but this is really something that I would do. I think this is perfect for me,” she said.
Harness racing back on track at Leamington? By Bryan Jessop If efforts made by a Lakeshore-based committee are successful, harness horse racing will make its return to the Leamington Fairgrounds. Political dignitaries, members of the public, the Ontario Harness Horse Association and Standardbred Canada converged on the Fairgrounds Thursday, Jan. 17 to announce their intentions for 11 race dates at the local half-mile track and to voice their support for a group including Lakeshore mayor and Essex County warden Tom Bain trying to bring harness racing back to Essex County on a permanent basis. The group, which formed a committee with local supporters and OHHA members, submitted its proposal to the provincial government this week. During the press conference, the creation of the website www.lakeshorehorseraceway.com — describing the objective of providing a race venue at the Leamington Fairgrounds and the longterm goal of constructing a new facility in Lakeshore — was also announced. Among the website’s features is a page where members of the public can sign a petition in efforts to persuade the provincial government to allow ‘frozen’ purse money to be spent on the Lakeshore track. The open-to-the-public conference was led by OHHA director Mark Williams, a successful driver at Windsor

Raceway before the facility closed its doors about six months ago. “We feel it’s by far too important an industry to let it go by the wayside,” said Williams during the gathering at Leamington Fairgrounds. Williams introduced several speakers including Leamington Agricultural Society president Tammy Wiper and Leamington mayor John Paterson, both adamant supporters of the efforts to return horse racing to Essex County. Windsor Raceway closed shortly after the provincial government discontinued slot machine revenue sharing with Ontario’s horse racing facilities, a maneuver that Williams explained puts thousands of jobs in jeopardy.
