By Paul Forman Kingsville residents of multiple generations gathered on June 6 to remember a historical turning point in the Second World War and to honour those who took part in the landings on European soil. Byron Lazarus of the Kingsville Military Museum began the commemoration with a short address detailing the events that took place 82 years ago. “On the 6th of June 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord – the D-Day landings in Normandy. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from the Nazi occupation,” Lazarus said. “The men who crossed the English Channel that morning came from many nations and backgrounds. They landed under intense enemy fire, facing extraordinary danger and uncertainty. Many never returned home. Others carried the memories of

that day for the rest of their lives.” He continued, “D-Day did not end the war in Europe overnight, but it was a decisive turning point. It opened the longawaited Western Front, placed immense pressure on Nazi Germany, and began the advance that would ultimately lead

to the defeat of the Nazi regime and the restoration of freedom to millions across Europe.” Lazarus concluded with, “Today, as we remember those events, we also remember our responsibility – not only to honour the veterans and those that gave their lives, but to ensure that

Effective with next week’s June 17 paper, the Southpoint Sun will switch to newspaper box distribution. The switch from driveway delivery in Leamington has been made due to the decision by the Windsor Star (Postmedia) to halt flyer delivery across Canada. The Sun was a contracted delivery vehicle for those flyers, and without the flyers it would be logistically impossible to deliver them driveway-to-driveway. See page 2 for more details and where you can pick up your newspaper starting next week.
