By Mark Ribble The second annual Competition Pow Wow hosted by Caldwell First Nation enjoyed sunny skies for the majority of the weekend and drew thousands of spectators to witness the tradition and ceremony of a true Indigenous celebration. The Pow Wow kicked off Friday evening with a grand entry that included Indigenous leaders, guests, dancers, drummers and also local dignitaries. Well over 50 vendors were set up on the periphery of the property with food vendors and artisans all lined up side-by-side. The main tent saw drumming, singing and dancing competitions, with competitors dressed in traditional regalia. Caldwell Chief Nikki van Oirschot welcomed everyone during the Grand Entry and thanked all participants and organizers for their commitment to making the event happen. “I’m grateful to all who have put so much work into what’s been planned, how much we’ve learned from last year, how much more space there is,” she said. “Thanks to our committee and volunteers for making sure that everyone can enjoy this weekend thoroughly and completely.” She singled out Councillor Randy DeGraw for his work and dedication to making the Pow Wow happen, saying that he’s worked tirelessly to ensure everything was well organized.
