TEXTURED DÉCOR

Winter 2025 is all about tactile richness. Expect to see bouclé furniture, soft sherpa chairs, chunky knit blankets, velvet cushions, and faux fur throws that create inviting, luxurious environments.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS

Wellness as a social activity is on the rise. Think yoga in the park and other community focused fitness classes that combine connection with movement.

SOURDOUGH

The sourdough trend continues to rise, blending old-world tradition with modern wellness. Home bakers and chefs alike are embracing it, not just for its tangy flavour and rustic crust, but also for its gut-friendly fermentation and artisanal appeal.

What’s hot...

SKILL SWAPPING

Forget taking formal classes and try swapping skills instead. Share what you know with others and let them teach you something new.

NOSTALGIC HONEY OAK REVIVAL

A surprising yet comforting revival: honey oak wood tones are trending for their warmth and vintage charm. From cabinetry to accent furniture, the golden tones of honey oak bring depth and hominess back into modern spaces.

ECO-CONSCIOUS FABRICS

Eco-friendly fabrics are taking centre stage as fashion continues toward sustainability. Materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and recycled fibres are replacing fast-fashion staples, offering both style and a smaller environmental footprint. This trend reflects a growing desire for clothing that not only feels good to wear but is also good for the planet.

STINGE-WATCHING

The opposite of binge watching, stinge-watching is intentionally spreading out viewing a series. A number of series are now releasing episodes weekly instead of an entire season at once, reverting back to the way TV shows were released on network TV. Instead of instant gratification, viewers are wanting to go back to the days of anticipation and longterm enjoyment.

“GRANDMA HOBBIES”

Traditional, manual hobbies and crafts are coming back as wellness remedies. “Grandma hobbies” like knitting, baking, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles are now recognized for their mindfulness, slow flow, and emotional grounding.

Stocking Stuffers for Beauty Lovers

Here are my top picks this season that are perfect for gifting!

Watier Bio Lift Eye Patches

The Watier Bio Lift Eye Patches are the perfect finishing touch to any gift or stocking! Everybody can use a pick-me-up, especially during the busy holiday season! These eye patches help to smooth and lift the undereye area with its exclusive Soya Phyto-Collagen, Aloe, Witch Hazel, and vitamin E concentrated formula.

Clinique Almost Lipstick

It can feel difficult shopping for the makeup lover, especially when it comes down to picking the right shades that will suit the person you’re shopping for. Luckily, Clinique offers a unique “almost” lipstick formula in three beautiful universally-flattering shades. My personal go-to is the Pink Honey, which is a soft-sheer pink. It is also available in the cultclassic Black Honey shade, and the newly launched Nude Honey. You can’t go wrong with any of these universally-flattering shades, especially if you can snag the limited edition glitter packaging that launches every holiday season.

Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes and tools also make for an easy last-minute gift idea. Whether you’re looking to add a skin tool like a Gua Sha to compliment a skincare rountine, or a new foundation brush, Quo beauty has you covered with their wide variety of accessories and tools to add a finishing touch to your gift!

Fragrances

A fragrance can be a great addition to any gift. Vanilla scents have been a highly requested wishlist item year after year. My favourite warm vanilla scent is the YSL Libre Le parfum. It is a captivating fragrance that lasts all day long with notes of Bourbon Vanilla, Honey, Tonka Bean and Vetiver. If you love a softer vanilla, try the new Lancôme La Vie est Belle Vanille Nude. It is a musky vanilla fragrance with notes of solar jasmine, glazed vanilla, and creamy white musk.

Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Intensive Smoothing Hand Cream

Take a small step into the world of luxury beauty by gifting the Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv Intensive Smoothing hand cream. This luxury line has been a staple in the industry for many years with its exclusive Sirtivity-LP™ technology. You may just want to grab one for yourself, too!

Kat & Co. Interiors tackles your real-life design questions with heart, honesty, and a touch of creativity.

In this edition, I’m sharing three questions that stood out to me as a common problem for homeowners. Whether you are trying to finish and personalize your room, add bold colours or work with inherited furnishings, these answers will guide you on your way to living happier in your home.

Q:“My living room feels cold and unfinished. I’ve painted, added furniture, but something’s still missing. How do I make it feel warm and inviting?”

A:You’re not alone, many spaces reach that almost there stage where the big pieces are in place, but the room hasn’t quite come alive yet. Warmth often comes from layering and adding texture. Start by thinking beyond the walls and furniture:

• Add texture generously. Hang curtains, add accents like a chunky knit throw, velvet cushions, a jute or wool rug, and woven baskets to bring in tactile depth that instantly softens a space.

• Layer your lighting. Relying on a single overhead light can make any room feel flat. Try mixing a floor lamp, a few table lamps, and perhaps a warm-glow sconce to create coziness.

• Include something personal. Family photos in fun frames, meaningful artwork, or a stack of wellloved books can transform a room from catalogue pretty to lived-in lovely.

The finishing touches often carry the most emotional weight. Think of this stage as adding your signature scent to the space — subtle, but unforgettable.

Kat Tiessen, Designer Kat & Co. Interiors katcointeriors.com
Designer Kat Tiessen shares her expert advice.

“I love bold colours and patterns, but I’m afraid of committing to something I’ll regret. How can I introduce personality without it feeling overwhelming?”

First of all, I love that you want to embrace personality in your home! This is where design really starts to sing. The key is sprinkling in the boldness so it feels intentional rather than overpowering. Here’s how to strike the right balance:

• Start with a neutral foundation. Think classic floors, softly toned walls, and timeless furniture shapes. This creates breathing room for the fun stuff.

• Choose one or two fun, bold moments. Maybe it’s a statement wallpaper in the powder room, a cobalt velvet sofa, or patterned drapery in the dining area. Let those pieces shine while keeping surrounding elements calm.

• Experiment through accents. Throw pillows, art, and decorative accessories are low-risk, high-impact ways to play with colour. They can easily evolve as your tastes and the seasons do.

Remember — bold doesn’t have to mean loud everywhere. A well-placed “wow” moment feels more elegant than trying to make every corner shout.

Q: A:

“My home is full of inherited furniture from family and nothing really matches. How can I make it all work together?”

This is a fun challenge! When done well, mixing inherited pieces can give a home incredible depth and soul. The secret lies in creating harmony through thoughtful styling, rather than forcing uniformity. Try these strategies:

• Unify through colour or fabric. Reupholstering mismatched chairs in a shared palette, or painting disparate wood finishes in complementary tones, can make them feel like part of a curated collection.

• Repeat elements. If one piece has beautiful brass hardware, echo that detail elsewhere — maybe through light fixtures, frames, or accessories. Repetition helps the eye read “cohesive,” even if styles differ.

• Give each piece space to breathe. Instead of clustering everything together, let special items take centre stage in different rooms. This honours their significance without overwhelming one area.

Your home doesn’t need to look like a showroom. When treasured heirlooms are thoughtfully placed, they create a story that’s uniquely yours — and that never goes out of style.

WHY PERSONALIZED NUTRITION COULD BE THE KEY TO FEELING YOUR BEST

We’ve all seen the diet trends come and go—keto, paleo, intermittent fasting. But what if the secret to better health wasn’t about following the latest fad? Enter personalized nutrition, a growing movement that tailors your diet to your unique biology, lifestyle, and goals.

Personalized nutrition is discovered through testing, professional guidance, and careful self-observation, allowing you to eat in a way that truly supports your unique body and goals.

Optimized Health, Your Way

Generic nutrition advice can be helpful, but it doesn’t account for your personal differences in metabolism, genetics, or even how your body responds to certain foods. Personalized nutrition targets these factors, helping improve blood sugar control, cholesterol, and overall wellness more effectively than broad dietary rules.

A Happier Gut

No two digestive systems are alike. By factoring in your gut microbiome, food sensitivities, and intolerances, a personalized plan can reduce bloating, inflammation, and discomfort. Think of it as giving your gut exactly what it needs to thrive.

Energy That Lasts

If you’ve ever wondered why your friend thrives on oatmeal while you crash before noon, you’ve already seen personalized nutrition in action. By aligning meals with your metabolism, you get sustainable energy that supports both busy workdays and active weekends.

Immunity and Beyond

The nutrients that strengthen immunity—like vitamin D, zinc, and antioxidants—aren’t “one size fits all.” Personalized plans make sure you’re covering your unique nutritional gaps, helping you stay resilient all year long.

Food for Mood

Food affects more than your body—it affects your brain, too. By stabilizing blood sugar and focusing on nutrients that support brain health, personalized nutrition can help reduce brain fog, improve focus, and even support emotional balance.

Weight Management That Sticks

Instead of restricting yourself with unsustainable rules, personalized nutrition builds a plan around foods you enjoy and respond well to. That makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight without the frustration of yo-yo dieting.

Personalized nutrition isn’t about perfection—it’s about paying attention to what your body truly needs. Whether that means adjusting your protein intake, swapping certain carbs for others, or discovering which foods leave you feeling energized, it’s a lifestyle shift that empowers you to eat with confidence.

If you’re wanting to personalize your nutrition, connect with a healthcare professional who can assess you. Naturopaths, nutritionists, or general practitioners can work with you to find out what works best for you and your body.

This cookie is vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free. You’d have no idea it has a healthy twist to it!

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 1/2 cups almond flour

• 1/2 tsp baking powder

• 1 cup dark chocolate chips

• Pinch of pink salt for topping

Instructions:

Three hot beverage station ideas to make your next gathering super cozy!

When the weather gets chilly, nothing feels more inviting than cozying up with a cup of something warm. I’ve got three easy, winter-ready hot beverage station ideas to make hosting easy this season!

APRÉS SKI MULLED WINE/SPICED CIDER

COZY COCOA BAR

Who doesn’t love a good hot chocolate with melting marshmallows?! This beverage station is sure to bring out the kid in all of us and it’s super simple to set up.

• Use a large tray to keep everything in one place.

• Make the hot chocolate ahead and keep warm in a carafe or slow cooker.

• Offer toppings like crushed peppermint, chocolate chips, marshmallows, and caramel sauce.

• Use mismatched seasonal mugs for extra charm.

JH Tip: Pre-rim glasses with melted chocolate before guests arrive for a special touch!

This instantly sets a cozy, festive mood (and it’ll make your house smell so good!)

• Make your mulled wine/spiced cider ahead of time and keep warm in a slow cooker or on the stove.

• Offer garnishes like cinnamon sticks and orange slices.

• Style your station with wood cutting boards, plaid napkins and evergreen elements for a winter cabin feel.

JH Tip: My easy hot cider recipe: In crockpot set to low add 1 jug of apple cider, 3 small tangerine oranges, 2 cinnamon sticks, 3 cloves. It’s ready to serve in 2-3 hours.

TEA NOOK

This is a perfect way for making brunch or after dinner hosting easy, and instead of the usual coffee, try offering guests a new experience.

• If serving loose leaf tea, put them in clear mason jars or containers - they will make your nook look so fancy!

• If serving tea in bags, put them in a pretty box or small bowl for guests to pick their fave.

• Add little extras like honey sticks, lemon wedges and cream in a small jug.

• For a special touch, serve using vintage tea cups (you can easily thrift some for a just a few dollars each)

JH Tip: There’s so many flavours out there, but stick to just 3-4 options and maybe try throwing something unexpected in there (like peanut butter cup or negroni flavoured teaboth so good!)

Hosting in the winter months doesn’t have to be complicated.

The key is to keep it simple - focus on presentation, a few thoughtful details and you’ll turn a simple setup into a cozy drink station that’s easy for you and delightful for your guests!

Perspective

My son’s autism diagnosis forced me to zoom out and ask the hard question: What actually matters? It made me evaluate how I was spending my time and whether that matched the life I would want at 80. That clarity cut through noise and allowed me to define success as balance, purpose, and impact, not titles or paycheques.

Resilience

Obstacles are not setbacks; they are data. Every unexpected twist sharpened my problem-solving skills and reinforced patience and adaptability. Resilience is turning challenges into fuel and using them to get better, faster.

My Favourite Things

Home Team

My family is not a side note; they are part of the operating system. My husband helped build Altr. My mom, aunt, and sister-in-law help run it. My children are growing up inside it. Having my home team integrated into the work means I do not have to choose between building a business and being present with the people I love.

Connection

Strong communities do not happen by accident. I see it every day, from neighbours who donate to families supporting one another. Connection is more than a good feeling; it is the infrastructure that makes a business like Altr, and a life like mine, sustainable.

The Good Life

I left a “good” corporate career because it did not align with the life I actually wanted. The good life, for me, is designing my days around family, meaningful work, and creativity while still achieving ambitious goals. Freedom to choose where my time goes is the real win.

The Ripple Effect

Impact scales when people have a simple way to help. Through Altr’s Community Fund and everyday neighbour-to-neighbour generosity, small actions create measurable change such as birthday bundles, essential supplies, and direct support. It proves that consistent systems of giving outperform oneoff gestures.

Living Fully

Alignment is everything. Advocating for my child and building Altr forced me to drop roles that were not me and to double down on work that is. Living fully means my actions match my values at home, at work, and in how I show up for others.

TAKE A SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK

Stepping away from social media for a day or two is shown to decrease feelings of insecurity, jealousy and anxiety.

DECLUTTER YOUR PHONE

Digital clutter can cause stress the same way physical clutter can, so unsubscribe from unnecessary emails, mute non-urgrent notifications, and delete any apps you don’t use anymore.

ENGAGE IN CREATIVE HOBBIES

Spend time creating without the screen. Activities like cooking, drawing, knitting or painting can invoke a sense of accomplishment without the need for technology. Try thos “grandma hobbies” we mentioned on page 6.

SCHEDULE OFFLINE TIMES

Scheduling offline times into your day ensures that you’re following through with your digital detoxing. Set a reminder or an alarm at the same time every day to get yourself into the routine.

CREATE A NO-PHONE MORNING RITUAL

Starting your mornings with an intentional, positive routine fosters mental clarity, enhances focus, and boosts your mood. “Doom-scrolling” first thing in the morning has been shown to increase anxiety that can follow you throughout your day.

In Loving Memory of Gerald E. Omstead

One of my earliest memories of crying in public was when I was in high school. I was in my second period grade 11 history class writing a test that brought on nerves and nausea. I was prepared; I knew my stuff, yet I questioned my own newfound knowledge on early Egyptian times. I even had notes from my good friend Kelsey who was easily the smartest person in our class— and grade.

The test was multiple choice. I had already circled my responses but upon review, I second-guessed my answers. My heart started to beat, and I felt damp under my arms. I relentlessly began to erase my answers and correct what was likely not all wrong. Unbeknownst to me, the rest of the class had handed in their tests and my teacher was growing impatient. As I started to erase and “correct” one of the last questions, the teacher threw their hands up in the air and said something along the lines of: “Are you kidding me?!” I looked around and all eyes were on me. My heart dropped.

I was able to hold in tears for the rest of the class until I made a safe refuge to my locker where Kelsey, the good friend she was, escorted me. I cried in the halls of my high school…not the most empathetic place at the time to a teenage girl. I worried what my peers thought.

That day my mom picked me up from school to drive me to dance class. I wept in the car as I relayed what happened earlier. I saw the Momma Bear in her come out as she planned to talk to my teacher. I shut the idea down. I didn’t want the teacher to know. I didn’t want them to get in trouble. I just wanted it all to go away.

When we cry in public, we bring out the humanness in others that is often lacking in our North American culture.

Tears connect us to our family, our friends, our community and most importantly to ourselves.

At the time I was so wrapped up in the situation to see how my revealed emotions served me. I felt too exposed and was afraid to be vulnerable. Though, upon recollection, I can remember the sympathetic eyes of my peers. I remember my friend Kelsey carrying the load of my fear with her kindness and care. I remember my mom feeling alongside me as her daughter hurt. I even remember my teacher softening towards me, as I later

learned my mother did in fact speak with them.

People are people. We have emotions and bad days. We are messy and make mistakes. I’m learning in my practice, that a common stressor among clients comes from the pressure to act a certain way in society.

@counsellingwithtara

We are expected to play a role in the community, at work, on social media, at home and at times even within our circle of friends. We push aside our true feelings because we are taught that they don’t belong in a classroom, a boardroom, a courthouse, or in parliament. People even use emotion against each other all the time.

But what if feelings weren’t the problem, but in fact our

THE SECRET SUPERHIGHWAY OF HEALTH:

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF YOUR LYMPATHIC SYSTEM

When it comes to health, energy & radiance, the Lymphatic system is where it’s at. Quietly working behind the scenes, it is arguably one of the most powerful systems in our body.

It has a vast network of vessels, nodes, and tissues that act like a built-in sanitation crew. It flushes out waste, drives the immune system, and helps balance fluid in the body.

When your lymphatic system is running smoothly, you feel light, vibrant and clear. When it gets sluggish? Think bloating, brain fog, low energy, weak immunity, and stubborn puffiness.

Unlike the circulatory system (heart pumping blood), the lymphatic system has no pump of its own. It depends on movement, breath and therapeutic techniques, such as manual lymphatic drainage.

Functional lymphatic drainage does not just sweep away the toxins, it helps regulate inflammation, support hormone balance, drain fluid from our organs and can even influence how we think and feel.

One fascinating discovery is the glymphatic system in the brain. This overnight “rinse cycle” clears out waste and proteins that can build up in the nervous system. It’s most active while we sleep, which is why quality rest is essential for memory, focus, and long-term brain health.

The lymphatic system is also connected with the vagus nerve, which helps regulate digestion, mood, and stress response. When the vagus nerve is calm and balanced, lymph flow improves, and the body shifts into “rest and digest” mode moving away from the standard fight or flight mode we are often prone to.

No area of the body is left untouched by the lymphatic system. The gut is home to a majority of our immune system, and lymphatics play a vital role. Special lymph vessels in the digestive tract, called lacteals, absorb fats and fat-soluble nutrients while also helping regulate immune responses. When gut lymph is sluggish, it can contribute to bloating, food sensitivity, and inflammation. This reminds us how connected digestion and detox truly are.

Lymphatic drainage is not only focused on detox, but also on creating space for the body to thrive. Treatments are designed for everything from postsurgical recovery to hormone support, or simply the desire to feel lighter, more balanced and improve immune health.

Why it all matters:

Your lymphatic system is working 24/7 to keep you healthy and thriving. It is not just about detox and fluid release for aesthetic benefits. It is about living with more energy, clearer more radiant skin, better digestion and nutrient absorption, less inflammation, better sleep, clearer sinuses, improved immunity and so much more.

Move Daily:

Lymphatic Lifestyle Tips

Walking, rebounding (jumping), or yoga are all excellent ways to stimulate lymph flow.

Stay Hydrated:

Water is essential for lymph to move freely.

Deep Belly Breaths:

Diaphragmatic breathing acts like a pump for your lymphatic vessels.

Dry Brushing:

This simple at-home ritual encourages circulation and skin renewal by using a soft or stiff bristle brush on your dry skin. Always use long, upward strokes toward the heart.

Prioritize Rest:

Your body does its best detoxing and repairing while you sleep.

How pets can paw-sitively affect your life

There’s something magical about the soft thud of paws running to greet you at the door or the gentle purr of a cat curling up beside you after a long day. Pets have a way of weaving themselves into our routines, offering comfort, companionship, and even a bit of comic relief when we need it most. Beyond their undeniable cuteness, pets can truly transform the way we live.

A Boost For Mental Well-Being

Studies show that simply being around pets can help lower stress and anxiety. The act of petting a dog or cat releases oxytocin, the “feel-good” hormone that fosters relaxation and connection. For many, daily walks with a pup or quiet moments spent with a purring feline become grounding rituals that offer a welcome pause from life’s hustle.

Built-In Companionship

Loneliness has a way of sneaking in, even in our busiest seasons. Pets provide constant companionship that feels both comforting and unconditional. They don’t care if you’ve had a bad hair day or missed a deadline, they’re simply happy to be with you. That kind of steady presence can make a house feel like home.

Encouragement to Stay Active

From leisurely walks to playful backyard fetch sessions, pets often encourage us to get moving. Dog owners, in particular, tend to be more physically active, and those daily strolls benefit not just the pup, but their human too. Even cats can inspire activity. Whether it’s dangling a toy mouse or setting up a climbing tree that encourages both of you to play.

A Sense of Purpose

Caring for a pet instills routine and responsibility, but in the best possible way. Knowing you’re needed for feeding, grooming, or even just cuddle time creates a sense of purpose that adds structure to your day. For many, especially those living alone, this nurturing role fosters confidence and connection.

Joy in the Little Moments

Perhaps the greatest gift pets bring is the reminder to find joy in life’s simplest moments. Whether it’s watching your dog discover snow for the first time or laughing at your cat’s fascination with a cardboard box, pets have a way of keeping us present. They encourage us to slow down, laugh more, and cherish the everyday.

Bringing a pet into your life is more than just adding a furry friend—it’s inviting in love, laughter, and a fresh perspective on daily living.

BACKPACKING 101: PACK LIGHT, LIVE BIG

Samantha Lamotte shares tips for backpacking for beginners

The first time I boarded a plane solo, headed to the other side of the world, I almost chickened out. Two days later, I was drinking local Bia Hoi (Vietnamese beer) on plastic chairs with a group of Brits in the middle of Saigon. We were doubled over laughing at a particularly wild story involving a Cambodian hostel, a clown and a lost passport.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of backpacking, let me be the encouragement you need. This is your sign to get out there and go see the world. Here are the rules I’d follow if I was thinking about backpacking for the first time:

1. Buy the ticket first and figure out the rest later. Hear me out. The hardest part is starting. Buy the ticket for six months or a year out, it doesn’t matter, but just buy it. It’s much easier to save up your coins when you’ve got a clear goal in mind, not some vague concept of a backpacking adventure you’ll do “one day”.

2. Buy the high-cost ticket for the cheaper countryNOT the other way around. If you’ve got ample time and limited funds, travelling to the other side of the world might actually be your best bet. What are you going to do in France for two months on $1,500? Fly further and make your dollar go farther. Why not give Vietnam or Paraguay a chance? I promise you’ll meet the coolest backpackers once you get off the beaten path.

3. Commit to BACKPACKing. Leave the suitcase at home - Osprey, Cotopaxi, REI, really any backpack made for backpacking will outperform a suitcase. Every. Time. I’d even venture to say backpacks are better for all types of travel. I know there are some people reading this thinking that this advice doesn’t apply for your trip, and I’m begging you to reconsider. Don’t suffer needlessly dragging your suitcase down a cobblestone street in Rome in 35 degree heat when you could’ve just heeded my advice.

4. It’s better to under-pack than overpack. One time I backpacked in Portugal and Spain for a month and a half with a 20L hiking bag. I would not recommend this unless you want to do your laundry every three days. However, I would recommend erring on the side of too few clothes and less toiletries. If you find that you’re missing some variety in your wardrobe or need a tube of mascara along the way, most places will carry all you need within a $10 Uber ride radius.

5. Backpacking is most fun when you’re not trying to tick cities or countries off a list. I know you might not want to hear this, but it’s true. Stop trying to pack five countries into a month long vacation. First off, it’ll make the whole trip feel like a chore, meticulously planning and factoring in travel days. Secondly, you end up forfeiting the freedom of saying “yes” to new opportunities that arise. Plan a basic itinerary but still keep your options open and see how life rewards you.

6. Shop like the locals. If you’re doing a multi-month trip, you will lose clothes - under your bunk or left airing out to dry on a clothesline of the hostel or motel that you just checked out of. Wherever you left them, you’re not getting them back. Go thrifting. Every country’s got some kind of thrifting culture, however rudimentary. Clothing can be the coolest most functional souvenir.

In the words of the late great Anthony Bourdain: “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”

Not every winter getaway needs to be about jam-packed slopes or rushing from one attraction to the next. For those looking to slow down, Ontario offers plenty of destinations where relaxation takes priority over hustle and invite you to savour the beauty of the season at your own pace.

Muskoka

Known as cottage country in summer, Muskoka is equally magical in the winter. Think snow-covered pines, frozen lakes, and rustic cabins equipped with wood-burning fireplaces. Whether you’re taking a leisurely snowshoe along forest trails or simply watching the snowfall from your porch, Muskoka invites stillness.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

This historic town becomes even more enchanting in the winter. Cozy up in boutique inns, wander heritage streets lit with twinkling lights, or sip ice wine by the fire at one of the region’s many wineries. Niagara-on-the-Lake is all about unhurried indulgence.

Prince Edward County

This laid-back region slows down after autumn’s harvest, making it a peaceful winter retreat. Wineries and cideries welcome visitors for intimate tastings, while boutique inns and wellness retreats offer cozy escapes. Pair it with farm-to-table dining and you have the recipe for a restorative weekend.

Just a few hours from Toronto, Haliburton Highlands is the perfect balance of wilderness and comfort. Here, you can unwind in a lakeside lodge, try a gentle snowshoe or cross-country ski through quiet trails, or embrace the calm of starry nights away from city lights.

Embracing Outdoor Winter Fitness

When the temperature drops, it’s tempting to trade sneakers for slippers and let your fitness routine hibernate until spring. But embracing outdoor cardio in winter not only keeps you active, it can also boost your mood, strengthen your immune system, and make the season far more enjoyable.

The Perks of Exercising in the Cold

Cold air naturally challenges your body, helping you burn more calories and improve endurance. Outdoor workouts also expose you to natural light, which can ward off the winter blues and regulate sleep cycles.

Cardio Options to Try

Winter Running: Bundle up in layers and embrace shorter, brisk runs. Snow-covered paths can add resistance, turning an everyday jog into a powerful workout.

Snowshoeing: This low-impact cardio option torches calories while letting you explore nature at a slower pace.

Cross-Country Skiing: A full-body workout disguised as a scenic adventure and is perfect for building stamina.

Brisk Walks: Don’t underestimate the power of a fast-paced winter walk; it’s accessible, energizing, and easy to fit into your day.

Gear Up for Success

The secret to enjoying outdoor winter cardio is dressing smart. Layer breathable fabrics to stay warm without overheating, choose shoes with good traction, and don’t forget gloves and a hat to protect extremities. Reflective gear is also key, since daylight hours are shorter in the colder months.

Looking for a new hobby?

Here are 6 beginner-friendly hobbies to try this winter:

As the seasons shift and we naturally spend more time indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to embrace something new and just for you. Hobbies don’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. In fact, the best ones often begin with the simplest tools and a bit of curiosity. Here are six beginner-friendly hobbies that will spark joy, creativity, and maybe even a new passion.

JOURNALING OR CREATIVE WRITING

There’s something soothing about putting pen to paper. Whether you’re jotting down a gratitude list, sketching out tomorrow’s to-dos, or playing with short story ideas, journaling offers a moment of pause in our busy days. Pair it with a cup of tea and a cozy blanket, and you’ve created a ritual that feels both grounding and inspiring.

GENTLE MOVEMENT

Movement doesn’t have to mean gym memberships or intense workouts. A mindful evening walk, a short yoga class, or a few stretches on the living room floor can be just enough to reset your body and mind. These little moments of movement add up, giving you energy and a sense of calm to carry into your day.

COOKING OR BAKING COMFORT FOODS

Nothing warms a home like the smell of something delicious in the oven. Starting simple with one-pot soups, fresh pastas, or a classic banana bread can be just the creative outlet you didn’t know you needed. Cooking lets you experiment, share, and enjoy immediate rewards, all while making your kitchen the heart of your home.

INDOOR GARDENING

Even if you don’t have a green thumb, indoor plants can be surprisingly forgiving. A trailing pothos, a hardy succulent, or a pot of fresh basil by the window adds a touch of life to your space. The ritual of watering, pruning, and watching your plants grow becomes its own kind of meditation.

PHOTOGRAPHY

You don’t need fancy equipment to start noticing the world through a photographer’s lens. With just your phone, you can capture the golden light in your kitchen, the first snow on your street, or the everyday details that make life beautiful. Over time, you’ll find yourself paying more attention to the little moments you might have otherwise overlooked.

HANDCRAFTS LIKE KNITTING OR CROCHETING

There’s a reason these timeless crafts are making a comeback. Knitting or crocheting is wonderfully meditative. You fall into the rhythm of each stitch, and before long, you have something warm and handmade to show for it. Beginners can start with something simple, like a chunky scarf or a set of coasters, and enjoy the satisfaction of creating pieces that feel personal, practical, and full of heart. Bonus: it’s the perfect hobby to pair with a good audiobook or your favourite series on a chilly evening.
