Happy New Year! It sure doesn’t seem like twelve months have gone by since the last time we offered that wish to each other, but it has. 2017 was … challenging. Politically, financially, from a terrorism standpoint, and in nature. I could fill every page of this magazine just hitting the highs and lows from the past year and like many, I’m not sad to put it in the rearview mirror.

Southern Tides saw quite a few changes as well. As planned, we went on quite a few more field trips to bring y’all some fun and interesting feature articles. We revised the design a bit to allow for more content and an easier-to-read layout, and we made changes to our ad pricing to make it affordable for even the smallest businesses. We also amped up our social media presence, celebrated our second anniversary and held steady at 32 pages for most of the year.

You may notice that we’re down to 24 pages with this issue, but not to worry. It was a slow month for content with the holidays and cooler weather, but we’ll be back up to 32 pages (and all the regular content) with the next issue and should hold there until we can increase to 40.

I’m not going to list a bunch of goals for 2018. What I’ll say instead is that we’re going to set a slow and steady pace for growth. That’s been the focus for the past six months and it seems to be working, so that’s how we’ll continue for the moment. Steadily increase new ads, steadily increase the amount of content, steadily grow our social media platform, and bit by bit, accomplish some of the things we’ve been working toward, like a website and improving the quality of paper the magazine is printed on. With hard work, dedication, perseverance, and of course the support of our advertisers and readers, we’ll get there.

I hope each of you are also ready to put 2017 behind you and make 2018 the best year ever. Let’s be our best selves, take time to enjoy all those special moments that arise, and leave our world better than it is now when we look back this time next year.
