My name is Colleen McCulloch and I am the Senior Patrol Leader of Scouts BSA Troop 328 as well as the President of Venturing Crew 425. This past weekend, I was able to attend the very first campout with my Troop: Weekend in the Woods at Worth Ranch. It was a full weekend dedicated solely to new girls joining Scouts BSA and it was awesome! Troop 328 was able to lead the opening flag ceremony, shoot shotguns and rifles, learn different useful types of knots, understand knife and axe safety, learn how to build the best types of fires, become knowledgeable on basic first aid, and learn the values of respecting the environment. It was also an opportunity to learn how to set up camp properly, how to work as patrols, and we even had some time to build some pioneering projects in our own campsite. The girls had a lot of fun and were able to participate in a number of really cool activities while learning a vast amount of outdoor knowledge. Weekend in the Woods was a way for our the Scouts in our brand new Scouts BSA Troop to implement their own outdoor skills, as well as being fully involved in outdoor activities and camp spirit. The entire troop was able to bond during this campout, making up our own songs and creating a plethora of peculiar inside jokes. We were able to experience the sort of Troop bonding that we otherwise would have never gotten to experience. At the end of the campout, our Troop actually won one of the “Scout Spirit� awards for being one of the most enthusiastic Troops.
As a member of both Scouts BSA and Venturing, I can see the appeal for both as they both have different focuses. Scouts BSA allows me to implement the leadership skills I have learned from NYLT and NAYLE to teach younger scouts some of my knowledge: It is a way for me to give back to the Scouting community and connect with younger generations through teaching new skills and focusing on the character development of others. Venturing is the program in which I can focus more on high adventure and career-focused skills, including the planning and execution of massive events and trips and the management of diverse groups of individuals. I am an active member in both programs because Scouts BSA provides me with a way to grow others while Venturing allows me to focus on my own personal growth. Overall, being involved in both Scouts BSA and Venturing is great because I am able to experience Scouting in different ways. #ScoutMeIn Colleen McCulloch from Area 2.
February 1, 2019 Boy Scouts of America launched the Scouts BSA program, for the first time allowing girls an opportunity to earn their Trail to Eagle. There are currently almost 10K girl members enrolled in the program. Although no official reports of how many are co-enrolled with Crew, we saw lots of green shirts on launch day.
Southern Region is proud to announce our standings for the 2019 Journey to Excellence! Thanks to Council and Area VOAs working diligently, we received 80 submissions. These forms will now be reviewed to determine the performance of each Council in our region to see where we can improve next year. Here are the highlights from this year: 89.9% submission rating The following Areas submitted 100% of their forms Area 1 Area 3 Area 4 Area 5 Area 6 Area 7 Area 8 The following Councils received GOLD STATUS Area 3: Alamo Area Council Area 4: South Florida Council Area 6: Cherokee Area Council, Lincoln Heritage Council Area 9: Atlanta Area Council

VenturingFest 2020, the third national gathering of Venturers at the Summit Bechtel Reserve – a Scouting experience unlike any other before – is coming your way again from June 28 to July 3!
VenturingFest 2020 is a special Scouting event at SBR that’s open to registered Venturers, Scouts and adult leaders across the U.S. This six-day high-adventure festival invites participants to explore the best the SBR has to offer. We’re talking rock climbing, skateboarding, BMX biking, water sports, shooting sports, zip lines, challenge courses, and so much more! As if the adrenaline-pumping activities weren’t enough, festival goers will also get to jam out to concerts and meet new friends in Venturing at the event. What more could a Venturer want? Announcing the 2019-2020 National Boatswain by Sea Scouts, BSA | Mar 4, 2019 Congratulations to Hannah Carter, the incoming 2019-2020 National Boatswain. Hannah is a member of Mariners 936 of Dana Point, California in the Orange County Council. She the current Western Region Boatswain and an Able Sea Scout working towards Quartermaster. She has served as the Western Region Area 4 Boatswain’s Mate and in multiple Ship leadership positions. She has cruised aboard the USCG Barque Eagle, graduated from the SEAL program, and competed in the Koch Cup two times. Outside of Scouting, Hannah has attends various sailing clinics, works as a US Sailing Level 1 & 2 Instructor, and is an active Girl Scout working on her Gold Award. She is a member of her high school choir, Key Club, and sailing team. Hannah’s vision for Sea Scouts includes enhancing recruitment, improving mentor ship relationships, increasing social media engagement, and developing regular communications among youth. Hannah has taken personal ownership of similar goals in the past. She has personally recruited five new members and developed a comprehensive communications plan as the Western Region Boatswain. We look forward to seeing where Hannah takes the program in the coming year!

February22-24th Area 3 Venturing team hosted our 2nd ever Venturing event for the area called Venturing Challenge! We co-hosted the Indiana Jones themed event with SHAC (Sam Houston Area Council) at Camp Bovay on the Tellison side of camp. There where scouts from four different councils across the area including SHAC, Alamo area, Capital area and the Rio Grande councils. We also we very excited to have Ryan Davis, SR President, and Sherry Mcgugin, SR advisor, with us for the weekend! Venturers were split up into new crews for the weekend to compete for the Venture Cup, which this year was a large bouquet of lollipops. Throughout the day the scouts participated in various rotating stations with activities geared towards the Indiana Jones theme. There was a knife throwing station, bull whip station, obstacle course, life size “Angry Birds”, human foosball and much much more! At each station the newly formed teams worked together to earn as many points as possible. At the end of the day there was a fajita dinner and the awards ceremony where the new crews were awarded for most points, individuals also got awards for best times on some events. To end the event we had a wonderful campfire where Mr. Devenport our Area 3 advisor was awarded with a Regional VLA for all of his wonderful for our area. After the campfire the Colonneh Lodge held a callout ceremony where the first youth girls ever were called out including our Area 3 president, Ella Hirsch. Overall our 2nd ever Venturing event was a success and we look forward to having even more Venturers out at nexts years area event! – Ella Hirsch, Area 3 VOA President
