Things you need to know

First things first. There are eleven sub-regions that make up Queensland Country and they each have very different experiences, so you’ll want to plan what to do geographically.

Queensland Country is big!

If you’re heading from Brisbane, Toowoomba is an easy day trip. However, destinations like Stanthorpe, Dalby and the Bunya Mountains are best enjoyed with an overnight stay, and further afield, such as Carnarvon Gorge, you’ll want to saddle up for a longer road trip or possibly fly there from Brisbane. One thing is for sure though, with a full weekend under your belt (or a little longer), the region offers endless possibilities for the perfect country escape.

Holiday Periods

Holiday periods are based around seasons, climate, major events, school and public holidays. Prices and availability fluctuate accordingly. For further information on school and public holidays in Queensland, visit education.qld.gov.au

Low: Summer (December – February)

Shoulder: Autumn (March – May) Spring (October – November)

High: Winter/Spring (June – September)

While there are events year-round in Queensland Country the largest number of events fall between August and October which we like to refer to as our Events Season.

Lake Somerset, Somerset Region

Climate

Queensland Country is a place that changes dramatically with the seasons. With each season dishing up an experience to top the last – there’s really no bad time to come and visit.

Visit in Winter to enjoy a cosy cottage with a fireplace for those frosty mornings, (sometimes even bringing snowfall), hunt for truffles or delight in distinct wine varietals in the heart of Queensland’s wine country.

Visit in Summer for subtropical heat that can be relieved in fresh water holes, lakes, cascading waterfalls, and fields of sunflowers. Frolic amongst the strawberry fields and apple orchards.

Visit in Autumn to witness tree-lined streets painted in vivid reds and oranges and enjoy freshly harvested apples, grapes and other local produce including one of the many artisan breweries and distilleries.

For further climate information, please visit Australian Bureau of Meteorology bom.gov.au

Visit in Spring for a floral blockbuster show, which even has its own festival to celebrate the season — The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Experience the treelined streets of the quaint country towns transcend into a purple oasis.

Fishing

Reel in unforgettable fishing experiences in Queensland Country. From tranquil creeks and rivers to expansive lakes, the region offers diverse habitats teeming with a variety of freshwater fish species. Whether casting a line for iconic Australian Bass, Yellowbelly, or Murray Cod, anglers of all skill levels will find ample opportunities to hook their next big catch.

Biking

Queensland Country offers a diverse array of cycling adventures, catering to every level of enthusiast. Explore serene country roads winding through picturesque vineyards, or embark on tranquil rides along scenic rail trails, bordered by lush bushlands. For adrenaline seekers, discover purpose-built mountain bike trails designed to challenge both beginners and seasoned riders alike.

Hiking

From the rugged beauty of Carnarvon Gorge to the ancient rainforests of Bunya Mountains, each trail in over 20 national parks calling our region home promises stunning views and unique encounters with wildlife. Whether tackling challenging terrain or enjoying leisurely strolls, hikers will find endless opportunities to connect with nature.

Bird Watching

From lush rainforests to expansive agricultural plains, the region boasts diverse ecosystems, each teeming with a plethora of bird species. Discover the melodious calls of lorikeets, or marvel at the majestic sight of wedge-tailed eagles soaring over mountain ranges. With over 400 species recorded across the region, every outing promises new and exciting birdwatching opportunities.

Horse riding

Riding along country trails or working cattle properties on horseback is an authentic country experience. Whether riding with a knowledgeable guide sharing the local history of the area or hiring a horse and embarking on a solo adventure, there is an experience for every level of horse rider.

Night skies

With Queensland Country’s high elevation, travellers can find serene stargazing hotspots free from light pollution throughout the region. Travel through the galaxy with a captivating night show at Kingaroy Observatory or learn from an award-winning astrophotographer in the Bunya Mountains. Explore Carnarvon Gorge’s flora, fauna and stars with expert-guided tours. For a relaxed stargazing adventure select a secluded campground or a boutique cabin surrounded by nature.

The best time to see the night sky in all its glory is through winter with the lower humidity, cool, calm air and generally clear skies (no clouds in sight here) providing the perfect opportunity to see the black star lit canvas in more detail. This season in Australia is also referred to as the Milky Way season, with the centre passing right overhead.

Sunflowers

Sunflower fields are a sight to behold, where paddocks transform into fields of gold as sunflowers stand tall in bloom. While you can find sunflower fields across the state, Queensland Country is a region that truly shines. However, it’s important to know where to find them and how to respectfully visit them.

Sunflowers typically bloom from January to March, but are highly weather dependent so bloom season can vary. While some fields come to life as early as November or December, others may have limited sunflowers due to drought conditions. The bloom period typically lasts for about three to four weeks, so timing is essential. A field that was vibrant one week might be past its prime the next. It’s a combination of good timing and a bit of luck to catch the sunflowers at their best.

Remember to tread carefully when visiting these fields, as they grow in the farmlands and crop fields of hardworking Queenslanders. The best way to show your admiration is by observing the sunflowers from a distance. Contact the Queensland Country Tourism (QCT) team for up to date info on where blooming sunflower fields may be.
