for each councillor. In July and August, the shire said all councillor expenses would be included in the latest council annual report released last week. The expenses for 2012-13 and 2013-14, never previously released, were not included in the report. “Council will release figures relating to council expenditure on training and conferences over the current term later this month,” shire chief financial officer Matt Green said in August.

When asked last week for councillor expenses figures, shire media communications manager Mark Kestigian said council governance manager Joe Spiteri decided the expenses figures could not be provided since caretaker provisions are in place before council elections. Caretaker provisions – in force from 20 September until 22 October – mean councils must not make major policy decisions just before elections or produce material that could influence election outcomes.

The state government advised The News that providing councillor expenses information does not breach the Local Government Act but individual councils can decide how to deal with caretaker provisions. Neighbouring Frankston Council and Kingston councils have published details of all councillor expenses for each year of this four-year council term in their annual reports. Continued Page 13

Dog bans to help endangered birds TOUGH new dog bans in the Mornington Peninsula National Park from Tuesday 1 November aim to help endangered hooded plovers, Parks Victoria says. In March the Environment and Climate Change Minister announced that dogs would be banned across the entire Mornington Peninsula National Park to provide greater protection for vulnerable fauna species, including the endangered hooded plover. “The hooded plover population in the Mornington Peninsula National Park is one of the largest in Victoria, however, they have had one of the lowest levels of breeding success, compared to populations in other Victorian coastal areas largely due to the presence of dogs in the park,” Parks Victoria area chief ranger Kris Rowe said. “We are increasing our ranger patrols ahead of the regulation changes to help make sure the public are aware that the dog bans will apply across the entire park from Melbourne Cup Day. “Hooded plovers are particularly vulnerable to the presence of dogs. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is for everyone to abide by the rules so that we can give them their best chance of survival,” Mr Rowe said. “More than 32 other fauna species of significance, in addition to the hooded plover, will also directly benefit from banning dogs in the

Mornington Peninsula National Park.” Ranger patrols will focus on dog walkers who breach current restrictions, such as not having their dog on a lead, walking their dog outside the regulated times (sunrise-9am), or walking their dogs in the signposted dogs-prohibited zones. Parks Victoria conducts extensive annual pest animal and plant programs across the park, including annual fox and cat programs. “Without the presence of domestic dogs in the park, Parks Victoria will be able to broaden the current pest fox-and-cat programs to increase their impact and give endangered species, such as the hooded plover, their best chance of survival,” Mr Rowe said. “We want to thank everyone in advance for their cooperation and we’re looking forward to what will, hopefully, be a good breeding season for this iconic threatened species.” Alternative dog walking areas on the peninsula include some bay beaches and leash-free reserves managed by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. More repairs after pier battered Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au STORM surges battered the much-maligned Mornington pier into submission again last week – causing more damage and forcing closure of the end section. Parks Victoria spokesman Lachlan Quick said during the severe weather on Monday 10 October, 10 wave panels were dislodged – with others still connected but damaged and likely to be removed. “This has impacted some of the timber decking as well,” he said. “The outer section of the pier has been closed to protect visitor safety and engineering inspections are continuing today and in coming days.” Divers were in the water Friday assessing the latest damage. New panels are expected to be built and installed in good weather. “The storm damage in July damaged the wave panel fixing system leaving the remaining wave panels more vulnerable to

dislodging in future storms. The system which strengthens the wave panels’ connection to the pier needs to connect across the full length of the pier to operate effectively.” Mr Quick said Parks Victoria needed “a window of good weather” to repair the July and October damage with a long-term fix able to withstand storms. “[We] understand the concerns and acknowledge the clear difficulties with the wave panels withstanding storm conditions,” he said. “The pier itself has no problem withstanding storms as it has a 1.2 metre thick concrete deck. Parks Victoria has designed and planned rectification works for July’s damage, but has been unable to implement the works due to the aggressive weather conditions at this time of year. “The focus right now is on fixing the pier. We’re exploring all options to get it repaired, functioning and open to the public.”

Poppies show we care SORRENTO-PORTSEA RSL sub-branch is gearing up for a successful Poppy Appeal this year. From late October, thousands of the iconic red poppies will be sold to raise funds for current and former servicemen and women in need. Sub-branch president Michael Jefferson said the “phenomenal commitment” shown by members and volunteers around the peninsula every year make the appeal a success. “Our community continues to come together to support the poppy appeal in the lead up to Remembrance Day on Friday 11 November,” he said. “It is humbling to see the wave of support and enthusiasm by the locals who support the Poppy Appeal in so many ways”. RSL Victoria Appeals manager Peter Smith said the appeal was a cause that resonated with all Australians and those

who buy poppies feel a sense of pride in wearing them in the lead up to and on Remembrance Day. “Not only does buying and wearing a poppy show respect for our country’s fallen heroes, but it helps raise vital funds to assist past and present servicemen and women and their dependents in times of need.” Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. Mr Smith said a wave of young veterans was finding themselves and their families in need of assistance, and it was as important as ever to donate to the poppy appeal. “We urge all Victorians to wear a poppy with pride as we remember this November.” Donate online at poppyappeal.com.au

Smear attempt over candidate’s drug conviction Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au A DRUG conviction for a crime committed nearly 40 years ago has become an election issue for one of the three vacant Briars ward seats onMornington Peninsula Shire Council. However, judging by comments posted to social media, an obvious attempt to smear candidate Leigh Eustace (pictured) may have backfired. Most people involved in the online debate since last Wednesday’s revelations of Mr Eustace’s conviction for trafficking heroin have argued that he has paid his dues and his three years spent in jail should not be held against him. “This is a sad day for local government. A lovely guy who has worked tirelessly for his community and is there for the right reasons is having his name dragged through the mud by someone threatened by him,” was an early comment that summed up many posted on The News’s Facebook page after the story was released late Tuesday night (“Candidate goes clear on convictions”). Other posts included: “Shame on those who dragged this out”; “He gets a guernsey from me”; “Dirty politics indeed; and, “I would not want to be judged today on my behaviour of 40 years ago”. A former Mornington Peninsula Shire councillor and now a candidate for the Briars ward in this month’s municipal elections, Mr Eustace came out and publicly admitted to having being jailed for drug trafficking after details

were posted on a Facebook page. He was 20 at the time of the offences and 22 when he was convicted. Now 58, Mr Eustace says he “did the crime and served the time”. He readily admits to making mistakes earlier in life but sees no reason, other than for political gain, why his crimes were published on social media. He said he had made “some poor decisions” and supplied friends during the 1970s “when hard drugs were common on the local scene”. Since publication of his comments by The News Mr Eustace has been interviewed by radio 3AW broadcaster Neil Mitchell, The Age and had his case discussed by a panel on Channel 10’s breakfast show. “It’s [the revelations of his conviction] probably done more good than

harm,” Mr Eustace said on Friday. “I was always concerned it would come up at some stage and now someone’s brought it up as a dirty [election] trick. But it’s backfired, if all the positive feedback I’ve received is anything to go by.” With 15 candidates competing for the three Briars ward vacancies the scramble to attract votes has become intense, with social media being used to expose Mr Eustace’s past crimes. In a move that can only have been designed to discredit his candidacy, a copy of his Supreme Court appeal against the severity of his 1980 conviction was posted by someone using a fictitious identity on the Facebook site of Frankston District Ratepayers Page & Regional Political Forum. The post was soon taken down by the site administrators, but not before

the revelations had gained some traction. Reaction to the post on the political forum’s site was mixed, with several comments criticising the airing of Mr Eustace’s criminal record. While one comment asked ”does it get more worse than that”, others said they admired someone who, afterwards, was able “to make something of their lives”. Another post pointed out that a recently elected senator had been jailed and that “I very much prefer people who have experienced life to those who are holier than thou”. Brad Hill, a former Frankston councillor, said the case was “an example of someone with an axe to grind, and someone else who has successfully rebuilt their life”. He was “happy to endorse Leigh … and I hope he gets elected. Quite obviously, somebody is scared he will”. Mr Eustace’s appeal to the Supreme Court was partly successful in that it managed to shave six months off his initial seven-year sentence. He eventually served three years in jail (Pentridge and a prison farm) followed by four years’ probation. At the time of his conviction Mr Eustace, a former Monterey Technical School student, was a qualified motor mechanic. While in prison he successfully applied for a computer science degree at Chisholm Institute and began studying for a new career within days of his release. “I saw it as my way to redeem myself and become a valuable member of society. Prison is a tough place and it was my way of escape from the day to

day horror of prison and i turned these skills it into a successful peninsula business,” Mr Eustace said. He nows says It is “horrible” to see the impact on the community “of drugs such as alcohol and ice” and for more than 30 years had seen sport as a providing a healthy alternative. “I have seen and experienced things that people only read about, so I am open to all members of the community and all their experiences,” he said. As a result “nothing shocks me” and his “life experience” enables him to have a “grounded approach” when helping others. He said his “mission in life” was to “encourage people … not to make the same mistakes that I did”. Elected as a councillor in 2008, Mr Eustace lost his seat in a tightly contested election in 2012. During his fours years as a councillor for the Mt Eliza ward (now included in Briars ward) Mr Eustace underwent governance training with the Municipal Association of Victoria, attended workshops held by the Victorian Local Government Association and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In his latest election campaign Mr Eustace says he will “strive” for better facilities and services “for all, including the growing number of younger families, social and recreational clubs”. He also wants to ensure protection for green wedge zoned areas, foreshores and reserves. “My goal is to keep the character of the shire through appropriate planning.”

Flesh-eating ulcers on rise Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au FRANKSTON and the Mornington Peninsula have emerged as “hot spots” for a flesh-eating bacteria that leaves sufferers disfigured and has doctors baffled. Variously known as the Bairnsdale ulcer, the Daintree ulcer and the Baruli ulcer, the infectious disease is affecting up to four residents a week in the Frankston and on the peninsula. Data from the Department of Health shows that 42 cases have been reported in Mornington so far this year, up from 33 last year. In Frankston, there have been 12 cases, up from seven last year. State-wide there were 106 cases of the infection last year while already this year 108 cases have been recorded. The bacterium is thought to enter the bloodstream via a mosquito bite, but little is known about the source. Head of infectious diseases at Peninsula Health Dr Peter Kelley said the rate of infection on the peninsula had increased steadily every year since it was first detected in the south east in the early 2000s. However, he admitted doctors knew little about its origins, the reasons for the increase, or the methods of transmission.

The disease, caused by the Mycobacterium ulcerans bacteria, causes a small, painless bite-like mark which, if left untreated, will ulcerate and form large gaping wounds. In severe cases, the bone can be infected. Dr Kelley said the ulcers were common in tropical climates, such as Queensland, and were common in rural sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, where poor healthcare often led to severe infection and amputations. He said since 2011 the number of people presenting at Peninsula Health had increased significantly, but doctors were unsure why. “The peninsula area is emerging as a bit of a hot spot, but nobody knows why,” he said. “We know it has been associated with stagnant water and coastal vegetation, and there has been some evidence gathered that mosquitoes are involved. “If you can avoid being bitten, you probably avoid the disease.” Every year there are 50006000 cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation, but Australia is believed to be the only developed country with significant Bairnsdale ulcer outbreaks. Dr Kelley said it was important to raise awareness of the disease among doctors and the public, as the key to recovery was to pick it up early.

He described the initial wound as a small bite that looked like it was “brewing” underneath. “The doctor took a swab and, once it was confirmed, I had to take two courses of antibiotics and have regular wound dressings, and while it’s slowly getting better it has still not gone completely,” he said. A keen gardener, Mr Misitano believes he may have been bitten while gardening and is urging people not to ignore insect bites. Dr Kelley said he expected infection rates to rise significantly with the onset of warmer weather, and warned people to use insect repellent and cover up outside. There is some evidence that the bacteria can be transmitted from mosquitos to wildlife, as it has been found in wildlife faeces. A 2007 study in Point Lonsdale, Victoria, detected Mycobacterium ulcerans among 11,000 mosquitoes. It is a reportable disease and the third most common bacterial disease after TB and leprosy.

NEWS DESK RSPCA clears ranch THE RSPCA will not be laying charges against the Ace-Hi ranch in Boneo, which was raided by inspectors in May. As reported in The News, the RSPCA visited the Boneo Rd property amid claims by a former manager of underfeeding and overworking of horses. At the time, the RSPCA said it had investigated “a number of welfare concerns at Ace-Hi in the past decade” as well as more recent reports raising concerns for the welfare of horses on the property. The officers left without laying charges and have now ended their investigation. On Friday RSPCA Victoria released a statement confirming that the investigations did not reveal any issues which would meet the threshold for prosecution under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The statement said Ace Hi Riding Ranch had complied with the recommendations of a qualified equine veterinarian and had “been provided with advice on the care and welfare of horses”.

She said her son had developed the communication and adaptive living skills he needed to be able to continue his education at school after being at the centre for two years. The early intervention programs at Abacus supported Sidney with essential learning skills, such as verbal and non-verbal communication, toileting, motor skills, listening and socialising. “Without that help early on Sidney would not be succeeding in a mainstream school like he is today,” she said.

“We have seen such a dramatic change in his speech, concentration and overall demeanour. “Sidney now has many friends who think that he is pretty cool, is learning more words and sentences every day, and, most of all, is a very loving and happy little man.” Ms Bendell said parents have travelled from all over Melbourne and Victoria since the service started eight years ago to access the programs. She said her son’s future was no longer uncertain. “Every day in

the minutest of ways, Abacus is changing not just Sidney’s life, but ours as a family.” This year’s gala theme is ‘A Night Out in Monte Carlo’. Ms Bendell said she hoped organisations and individuals would get behind the gala event, which would be an “uplifting” occasion. “It’s important to never stop believing that these children will have the brightest future ahead of them”. Clowns no laughing matter THE creepy clown phenomenon is concerning police, with their antics alarming motorists and passers-by. Reports of the clowns holding fake knives and cap guns and terrifying motorists along Frankston-Dandenong Rd, Carrum Downs, came to light Monday afternoon last week. The trio was said to be standing on the side of the road in full view of passing motorists. They ran off before police arrived. Senior Sergeant Kim Young, of Frankston police, said wearing a clown outfit was not necessarily against the law – it “has to be taken in context and depends on what they are doing”, she said. “Every instance will be assessed on its merits but, generally, if the offenders are making nuisances of themselves they will be dealt with.” Senior Sergeant Justin Watson said police also responded to reports of clowns on Robinsons Rd, Langwarrin, on Monday. “They were young kids who scampered and there was no incidence

of violence,” he said. “However, we are treating the issue seriously and we won’t tolerate offensive behaviour.” Sergeant Watson said the clowns were copycats mirroring the US craze. Asked if they would be arrested, he said: “It is an offence to possess an article of disguise, however, it all depends on the circumstances. “For example, it is not an offence to wear a balaclava in the snow but it is not allowed in a bank. If there is no threat then there is no crime.” Mornington Sergeant Jodie Powell said police received “three or four” calls from residents complaining about clowns on Racecourse Rd, Mornington. One reportedly was carrying a wooden knife. “It’s bad and scary,” she said. “I know of at least three jobs. We didn’t locate anyone on the first two but on the third we spoke to a young man but no charges were laid.” Stephen Taylor

Mt Martha recycled water facility open for business A $60 MILLION upgrade to South East Waterâ€™s Mt Martha Water Recycling Plant will provide an alternative source of water for local businesses and community organisations, while reducing the environmental impact of its water treatment processes. Eastern Victoria MP Daniel Mulino opened the upgraded facility last week and met with customers making use of the new recycled water supply. Construction of the tertiary treatment plant was central to the two-year project. It can deliver 26 mega-litres of Class A recycled water each day to farms, wineries, business and council facilities. The upgrade also includes an Australian first thermophilic anaerobic digestion process in which organic matter is broken down by higher temperatures.

Unlike traditional anaerobic digestion processes, which maintain organic matter at body temperature during treatment, TPAD makes greater use of the biogas emitted during the digestion process to heat the material to 55Â° centigrade, cultivating bacteria that deactivate pathogens and remove volatile organic content more quickly. This creates a more efficient treatment process, and reduces the recycling plantâ€™s environmental impact by capturing and using more methane and producing less odour. To allow it to reuse bio-solids â€“ a by-product of the treatment process â€“ South East Water has also included two solar dryers in the upgrade. These reduce the need for open air drying pans which cause odour and take up lots of space within the plant.

The solar dryers cut the bio-solidsâ€™ drying time from one year to as little as two months, getting a higher quality fertiliser into the hands of farmers more quickly. They use a fraction of the energy of alternative technologies, such as gas-powered dryers. South East Water has five solar dryers and produces more than 3000 dry tones of bio-solids each year. â€œWe are working closely with customers to further boost recycled water use and enhance the resilience and liveability of this growing region,â€? South East Water managing director Kevin Hutchings said. Open gardens show off peninsulaâ€™s beauty SIX of the Mornington Peninsulaâ€™s most striking gardens will be showcased next month during the Garden Design Fest. The event will be held over two weekends with the peninsula gardens open 10am5pm on the first weekend: 12-13 November. The event, which will feature more than 30 gardens across the state, is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Kew, Brighton North and Central Melbourne, and raises money for charity while encouraging innovation and responsible gardening. Mornington landscape gardener Steve Taylor, who will open his garden in Tallis Drive, said the peninsula was renowned for its magnificent gardens, many of which complemented the coastal environment and featured spacious, outdoor dining and entertainment spaces.

A PAKENHAM man has been arrested and charged with the aggravated burglary of a Mt Eliza house, 1am, Monday 10 October. Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Drake, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said a resident sleeping at the Koornalla Cr house awoke to find a man in the lounge room at 1am and challenged him. The man ran outside and jumped over a fence. The resident then realised his wallet was missing and his car in the garage had been rifled. Casey CIU later arrested a man, in his 20s. They allege he drove to Mt Eliza in a car stolen from another property in Koornalla Cr. The man has been remanded to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court at a later date. A MORNINGTON man in his 30s has been arrested and charged with theft and deception offences relating to a 66-year-old man known to him. Seawall works at Craigie beach WORKS to build a 97-metre rock revetment to protect Craigie beach’s ageing seawall have begun. The six-week works are part of the state government’s coastal environment program, which oversees protection and repair of the coastline. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s coastal project officer Jacky Priestley said the works would help protect the Craigie beach seawall from strong waves. He said the original stone seawall was about 50 years old. “The seawall was designed to protect the cliff faces from large, powerful waves which, over

time, can erode the cliffs and compromise the road, walking trails, and assets above,” he said. “During the past decade, a rock revetment was placed in front of the seawall to absorb wave energy. “This approach has proven to be highly effective, so we are extending the rock revetment, to prolong the life of the seawall and provide continued protection of the cliffs.” Until the work is completed, the area behind the seawall and sections of the walking paths in the area will be closed, 7am-5pm, MondayFriday.

Voters in dark over spending Continued from Page 1 The shire annual report released last week reveals the shire’s 11 councillors spent a total of $135,357 on expenses in the 12 months of the 2015-16 financial year. Frankston’s nine councillors spent $41,390 between them on expenses and Kingston’s nine councillors spent $29,073 during 2015-2016. Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors adopted a new expenses policy in September after three meetings and bitter arguments about alleged councillors’ expenses overspending. The shire obtained legal advice that placed doubt on council’s ability to force any councillor to repay any alleged overspend on a $16,000-aterm expenses limit, that seems to never have been enforced by council, in place during this council term. Maddocks Lawyers advised that expenses approved by council were lawful, even if more than $4000 in a year and $16,000 within four years and council could not force repayment. The expenses are separate to councillors’ $28,000 yearly remuneration; $85,000 for the mayor over a 12-month mayoral term. A majority of councillors resolved in April to order Cr Antonella Celi to repay about $9000 of $28,520 paid by the shire for attending conferences and seminars but that decision was reversed in May. Councillors decided last month future councillors can nominally spend up to $30,000 on expenses – up from the previous $16,000 limit - over four

years. Travel expenses, petrol expenses, child care fees, ‘information and communication expenses’ and training and conference attendance fees can be claimed by councillors. The shire’s refusal to release full term expenses figures for any councillor means the full expenses for Crs Celi (Seawinds ward), Hugh Fraser (Nepean ward) and David Garnock (Cerberus ward) – the only four of the 11 existing councillors seeking re-election – will not be known before ratepayers cast their votes. Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors collectively spent $223,666 in 2014-15, the only other year in this council term that councillor expense figures were published by council. Frankston and Kingston councillors spent $41,390 and $32,162 respectively on expenses over the same 2014-15 period. Cr Fraser, Cr Garnock and Cr Colomb told The News as far as they are aware councillors were never notified by council if they were near or over the limit of any expenses spending limit. Cr Celi’s expenses totalled $62,727 over the two years’ figures available, Cr Fraser’s expenses were $45,555, Cr Garnock’s $45,075 and Cr Colomb’s $29,431. Both Cr Celi and Cr Colomb were mayor for parts of the latest two years of the council term and mayoral expenses are often higher than councillor expenses due to the higher number of public events attended.

Revealing insight into author’s life AUSTRALIA’s favourite beach son and multi-award winning author Tim Winton enthralled a sold-out crowd at Safety Beach Sailing Club last week when he chatted with the ABC’s Paul Kennedy. The launch event was part of Winton’s national tour of his newly released non-fiction book, The Boy Behind the Curtain, which gives a rare insight into the man behind 28 books, written over a 34-year period. An autobiographical account of his upbringing in Western Australia, the book also reveals the characters and events behind some of his bestselling novels. At the Safety Beach launch, Winton spoke candidly about some of the links between his early experiences of spirituality, surfing and writing, and touched on world topics as well as personal incidents that helped shape his take on life. Better known for writing about complex, yet believable, fictional characters that embody the essence of small-town Australia, Winton’s latest book is an unusual and unexpected peek into his private world. The book launch – his first tour in 10 years – was a huge literary catch for organiser, Farrell’s Bookshop. Events coordinator Kate Horton said the store was delighted to bring an author of Winton’s calibre to the peninsula.

“We hope it’s the first of many big name events,” she said. Winton, whose books include That Eye the Sky, Cloudstreet and Dirt Music, is a keen conservationist and passionate supporter of the Australian book industry, which has been under threat by proposed changes to copyright law and parallel importation, where books are imported from another country to bypass copyright laws.

Mr H. Smith dies in gun accident Compiled by Cameron McCullough

A GUN accident, which resulted fatally, occurred at Mornington Junction on Saturday last. It appears that Mr H. Smith, a well known resident, took the gun from its place, saying that he would just have one shot. He went about 50 yards from the house, and on getting through a fence that was there must have caught the trigger in the wire, as the inmates heard a shot and on going to ascertain what was shot, found the unfortunate man quite dead, lying close to the fence. Death must have been instantaneous, as there were no signs of a struggle. The deceased was well respected, and deep sympathy is felt for his wife and family in their sudden bereavement. *** THE hon. sec. of the Frankston District Roll of Honor Fund, wishes to acknowledge receipt of 10s 6d from Mr Richard Wells. Any member of the committee will receive donations and the secretaries will forward a receipt. *** AT courts held at Dromana, Mornington and Frankston on Tuesday, 107 men presented themselves, of which 73 were declared fit and 32 unfit. At Dandenong on Thursday out of 113 men, 91 were declared fit and 42 unfit. ***

Whitaker was sworn in before His Honor Mr Justice Hood at the Practice Court Law Courts, Melbourne, as one of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the Centre Bailiwick of the State on the 17th October 1916. *** MISS Dulcie Bland, who performed at the recent concert given by Mr Harry Skinner, for the Frankston District Roll of Honor Fund, was again successful in gaining first prize at the South street Ballarat competitions. *** ON Wednesday next, Oct 25th an old Linen afternoon will be held in Red Cross depot room, Mechanics’ Hall, from 2pm to 6pm. A liberal response is asked for, as the demand in hospitals for old soft clean rags is very heavy, and many people can help in this way by coming to the depot with clean white linen, or if unable to come may be able to send cloths. *** IT will be seen by our advertisement in another column that the fourth meeting in the district in connection with the forth coming referendum will be held at Mt Eliza on Tuesday next. The object of the meeting is to secure replies of “Yes” on the 25th inst. Mr Hugh Menzies and other prominent speakers will address the meeting. It is to be hoped that there will be a good attendance and a

practically unanimous decision in the affirmative. *** THREE splendid bream, weighing about 2lbs each, were caught on Thursday, in the creek, by Cr C. Murray and Mr W. P. Mason. The nature of the bait used is a profound secret, only known to themselves. The lines used were of the type known as flathead. Wading was one of the essentials. Mr Hefter, who also indulges, caught a beauty; he states that bream is the easiest of all fish to catch. *** THE members of the W.C.T.U. and some friends, at the invitation of Captain Condor, drove to Langwarrin camp, and were all greatly interested and impressed with the splendid discipline as seen, also the many improvements effected at the camp. The men were busily employed at various occupations, some building a band stand, others working in the carpenter’s shop which looked replete with all necessary tools. The Doggies had the Piners reeling at 3/8 at the close of play after the visitors had to face the final six overs of the afternoon. The only good news for the Piners is that of the three wickets that fell, only one was a recognised batsman (Jarred Coad). Rhys Chalkley remains at the crease with Harley Peace-Stirling while

Craig Entwistle and Damien Lawrence are still to come. The visitors will be chasing down 193 for victory after the Doggies were bowled out for 192. Skipper Matt Foon was superb again with a high score of 46 while a number of players got starts but couldnâ€™t go on with it. Entwistle was the pick of the Pinesâ€™ bowlers with 4/16 from 6.5 overs, giving his side a slight sniff. Langwarrin is up against it, chasing 255 for victory against Baxter. The top order for Baxter set the tone against the Kangas, Daniel Warwick opening with 54, Chris Brittain scoring 61 and Justin Bridgeman 68.

The Demons’ nightmare continues DISTRICT By IT Gully RYE were taken back to the horrors of last season when they came up against Red Hill in MPCA District cricket on Saturday. Despite coming down a grade after being humiliated last season, the Demons wound back the clock a full year when it lost 16 wickets in a day for just 64 runs. The Demons were sent in to bat on the opening day of their match at Red Hill Reserve, lasting just 21.4 overs as they were bowled out for 32. Jarrod Saw with 14 was the only

Rye bat to score double figures. Glen Collett was at his menacing best for the Hillmen with 5/16 from 11 overs while Simon Dart claimed 5/13 from 7.4 overs. The Hillmen then went out and hit a quick fire 7/185 off 40.5 overs before sending Rye back in for the final 18 overs of the day. Felix McKillop top scored with 76 and Brent Martin hit 46. Collett picked up 2/12 in the second innings and Lincoln Toy claimed 2/6. The Demons have just four wickets in hand and need more than 120 runs to make Red Hill bat again. Boneo is also in a world of pain af-

ter dropping 12 wickets on the opening day against Mt Martha. The Pandas were sent in by the home side and were bowled out for just 44 in 31.3 overs. ‘Extras’ was the highest score with nine.
