Member David Hunt said that after the first robbery, a member quipped that thieves might come back again

Bold pitch for Moonah ‘paradise’ Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au TOURISM officials are optimistic a lavish golf, residential, conference centre and hotel development surrounding Moonah Links golf course will become a reality. The Chinese-backed project, valued at several hundred million dollars, is designed around its two 18-hole golf courses at Fingal. It will include a 450-room, five-star hotel, a conference centre with seven restaurants, and three grand recreation centres: hot springs resort, water theme park and spa therapy resort. A golf institute built on the courses will be linked to 12 golf schools in China. The Chinese-led Peninsula International Group is making a bold pitch for the project, with an array of consultants being briefed for presentations to Mornington Peninsula Shire. It bought Moonah Links with its two golf courses, as well as a hotel at Fingal, for $18.5 million in August last year, according to industry sources. The golf resort covers 238 hectares with its Legends and Open courses. A promotional video describing the peninsula as “a paradise” and “one of the world’s must-see places” is aimed at international visitors. It promotes the region’s beaches, wineries, golf courses and tourist attractions, and emphasises Melbourne’s long-standing mantle as “World’s Most Liveable City”. Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board managing director Matt McDonald said sustainable tour-

ism, such as that espoused in the hotel and golf development, was more beneficial than day-trips for the region’s economy. “Tourism is the No. 1 employer on the Mornington Peninsula and we welcome sustainable tourism investment that promotes jobs and visitation to the region,” he said. “The proposed development seeks to grow year-round visitation from domestic and international visitors, factors that are critical to the long-term success of the visitor economy on the Mornington Peninsula.”

Mr McDonald said the proposed development would focus on the region’s world class golf courses, spa and wellness centres. “It also builds on some of the state’s strengths, being sport, recreation and international students – markets in which the Mornington Peninsula has not been strong historically.” He said neither the tourism board, nor the Mornington Peninsula Shire, were “across the detail of the development as yet”. “I am only seeing it for the first time but am following it with great interest”.

The Moonah Links site has reportedly long been earmarked for tourism development. “However, the proposal needs to go through the necessary planning and regulatory process with the state and local governments.” Acting Tourism and Major Events Minister Philip Dalidakis said through a spokesman: “We want to see worldclass destinations like the Mornington Peninsula continue to offer an unforgettable experience for visitors because it means more opportunities for nearby businesses and jobs for locals. “That’s why we’ve helped the devel-

oper with ways they can work with the Mornington Peninsula Shire to make this proposal work, like we do with many organisations with bold plans for great projects.” The developer has not sought state government funding for a project. “[They] have made representations to the government regarding facilitation advice, which the government has provided,” he said. “The matter remains one between the developer and the Mornington Peninsula Shire.”

“Truck” takes The Long Ride Home By Barry Irving FORMER SAS Warrant Officer, 68-year-old Laurie “Truck” Sams, holder of the Star of Courage medal, has embarked on an epic cycling journey called The Long Ride Home. And one of his stops will be the Southern Peninsula. Mr Sams is cycling through six countries to support Australian Army, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations veterans of wars in Vietnam, Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He started at the Australian Embassy in Hanoi at 11am, Thursday 12 May, and plans to complete the 10,000km ride on the 51st anniversary of the 10,000-day Vietnam War.

Crossing the bay by Sea Road Ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento, Mr Sams will be hosted by Rye RSL on Friday 28 October for a commemorative service at the memorial wall, followed by a lunch with entertainment. His ride aims to raise awareness and secure funding for the support and care of military veterans who, through military service to their country, are suffering physical and/ or psychological trauma (PTSD). “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war:” Douglas MacArthur. All stops out in preparation for bushfire season VICROADS will be undertaking a range of maintenance activities all over the Mornington Peninsula from now as it prepares for the coming bushfire season. More than $550,000 will be spent on removing dead and dangerous trees, cutting low branches over roads and reducing fuel until the end of the year. This work will include fenceto-fence grass mowing on all rural arterial roads to cut the large amounts of fuel generated by a wet winter, and to ease the risk of a fire spreading from road reserves to adjacent land. Maintenance work along Balnarring Rd will begin this week. VicRoads regional director Aidan McGann said inspections had been carried out over winter to determine the most at-risk areas on the peninsula. “Our maintenance team works closely with Emergency Management Victoria, fire authorities and local councils to assess the areas of greatest risk and determine our priorities for maintenance works,” Mr McGann said. “Bushfires are unpredictable, so we want to provide the safest environment possible for residents and road users as temperatures rise over coming months.” Mr McGann said VicRoads had also sponsored a Living with Bushfire Community Conference to hear from leading industry experts, including fire ecologists and community emergency groups. It was held last weekend at Lilydale. “We’ll do our best to prepare our environment for bushfire season,” he said. “But we also need to ensure that our community has a greater understanding of bushfires and how they can best protect themselves and their community.” VicRoads says it will monitor the conditions of arterial roadsides to ensure maintenance minimises bushfire risk. House raided A PC, DVD and TV set valued at “several thousand dollars” were stolen from a Rosebud house overnight, Saturday 1 October. Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Drake, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said the owner returned to the Windella Av house to find it ransacked and the items missing.

Thieves stay over Thieves forced the back door of a Dromana house and stole an iPad and a PlayStation sometime between 28 September-1 October. The Lombardy Av house was ransacked while the owners were away. Police said the offenders apparently stayed at the house, “taking their time, opening cans of food and bathing”. THE work of Landcare groups on the Mornington Peninsula will be celebrated to coincide with Landcare Victoria’s 30th birthday next month, with a range of events organised by the Port Phillip & Westernport Catchment Management Authority. In partnership with Trust for Nature’s “Spring into Nature” program and the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network, there will be an afternoon of guided tours and presentations at Boneo Park Equestrian Centre on Saturday, 5 November, from 1-5pm. Boneo Park Equestrian Centre is on 330 hectares and home to a variety of habitat types. In 2013, more than 200 hectares of the land was placed under a conservation covenant with the

Trust for Nature to ensure it is protected into the future. The majority of the covenanted land, about 170 hectares, is wetlands, including about 62 per cent of the Tootgarook swamp, which abuts Moonah Woodland. These areas are of very high cultural and environmental significance. Dr James Fitzsimons, Director of Conservation at The Nature Conservancy, will give a presentation on his book, “Linking the Landscape” and the importance of biolinks in Australia. There will also be the opportunity to meet Landcare group members over a high tea. It is a free event, however registration is essential. By John Renowden THE Mornington Art Show has established itself as the biggest and best quality art show on the Mornington Peninsula and one of the best in Victoria, judging by the comments of various show judges and submitting artists. The 45th show will run for six days: Thursday 19 January to Thursday 26 January at the Mornington Peninsula Community Theatre, corner Nepean Hwy and Wilsons Rd. The annual art show attracts a wide range of valued sponsors and a great number of quality artists. The Mornington Peninsula News Group remains a major supporter and sponsor of the art show. Like the last show, opening night will be on a Thursday and will end on the Australia Day weekend. Opening night and will have a gala party atmosphere with a nautical theme. Gourmet finger food will be served and refreshments will be available from the bar. Music will add to the flavor of the evening and feature artists Craig Davey and Ron Brown will mingle with guests. Art show judge and artist Julie Goldspink will

also exhibit some of her work. More than 800 paintings from several Australian states will be for sale. The great attraction of the Mornington Art Show is the wide variety of art genre from local and interstate artists employing a wide range of media. The range of original art pieces for sale from a couple of hundred to several thousand dollars is most extensive. Artists are encouraged to submit their work via Gallery 247 from 1 November- 18 December. “We aim to maintain the tradition of presenting a high quality art show with a wide range of exhibits from local and interstate artists at a range of prices to suit all purchasers,” art show chairperson John Renowden said. Profits from the show will fund a range of community and international projects of the Mornington Rotary Club.

Rosebud Heart goes all the way By Barry Irving IT was a sensational finish to a stellar season for Rosebud Heart. With 18 wins from 18 homeand-away games the team had reason to believe that they could go all the way and win the state championship. But, in their way were RMIT FC – the champions of State North 5. In a sensational final, Heart’s Daniel Hodge scored the opening goal before RMIT equalised, making the scores one-all at full time. This was the closest to losing a game the Heart’s had been all season. The players regrouped and, in the penalty shootout, both teams went goal-for-goal with Heart goalkeeper Sean Skelly pulling off two brilliant saves. This left Heart’s Beau Sharpe to bury the winning goal into the back of the net to give Heart a fantastic win – and the state

Estuary’s useful plants THE saltbush, found at Balcombe Estuary, Mt Martha, is a tasty plant, excellent for reviving tired travellers. And bower spinach is good to eat but should be blanched first to remove poisonous oxalates. Ecologist and artist Gidja Walker revealed some of the secrets of plant life to children last Wednesday as part of a BERG Mt Martha school holiday activity. The children learned that every plant has a story, many are tasty, some are medicinal and all need to be treated with respect. Ms Walker started the exploration with the spiny-headed mat rush which she said was a traditional basket-weaving plant of the Bunurong people. In the next hour, as she led the children on a bush tour, she wove a delicate bracelet from her frond of mat rush. “Each plant will let you know which piece can

be taken,â€? she said gently easing a reed from the mat rush clump before eating the soft white end. “It tastes like peas,â€? she said, encouraging the children to try it. Other facts learned on the tour: ď Ž Tea tree oil is good medicine, useful for getting rid of head lice, but not the eggs; ď Ž Swamp paper bark was used to make baby “nappiesâ€? when lined with moss, and was used to wrap food and wounds; ď Ž Green samphire is tasty and people on the Cornish coast in England grow it to eat with crabs; ď Ž The common reed is an excellent water purifier but is becoming an endangered species. ď Ž If you get an insect stuck in your skin, put sticky tape on it (or wax strips) and rip off; ď Ž If you are looking for water in the desert, search for giant bulrushes, because they grow in the freshest water. Cameron McCullough cameron@mpnews.com.au WHEN more than 2000 people gather at the foot of Arthurs Seat on Sunday 6 November, one group will stand out from the rest. They will be wearing the black and blue running shirts of the Nicholas Lynch Real Estate team, which has sponsored the annual challenge for the past eight years. Proprietor Nicholas has run the 6.7 kilometre course six times, while son Brodie won his category over the past two years, and Abbey Brady, daughter of the company’s client services manager Jo Brady, won in her category last year. “This is something we’re very passionate about,” Mr Lynch said. “I’ve always believed in the importance of involvement in community sport. This event also adds the aspect of road safety fundraising, which makes it even more worthwhile. “Most of the staff at Nicholas Lynch Real Estate are parents, so, on a personal level, we understand the importance of driver education for our youth.” Last year, Nicholas Lynch Real Estate staff and families made up about 30 participants in the race. This time they are hoping for closer to 40 – all wearing the company logo on their shirts. In 2014, as a show of continued support for the event, the company paid for more than 200 competitors to register.

“We paid the registrations to increase awareness of the event,” Mr Lynch said. “Those people have discovered how much fun and how rewarding it is, and have gone on to participate on

their own accord since then.” Arthurs Seat Challenge funds the Fit2Drive program which delivers peer facilitated workshops to Year 11 students at schools and community settings across the state.

The program aims to provide young drivers and their passengers with better decision-making capabilities to cope with difficult driving situations. Transport Accident Commission chief executive officer Joe Calafiore

supports the campaign and also congratulates the Mornington Peninsula Shire for being the first Towards Zero municipality with its range of road safety initiatives. “Towards Zero is not just a campaign or vision – it defines our approach to saving lives and we’re thrilled that the people of the Mornington Peninsula have embraced the positive approach to road safety,” he said. “From 2011-15, on average 22 per cent of all drivers killed in Victoria were aged 18-25 – despite the group representing just 14 per cent of all Victorian licence holders,” Mr Calafiore said. “Good driver behaviour is learned from a young age, which is why we have a number of road safety programs, like Fit2Drive, running in schools and regional areas.” As for Nicholas Lynch, who recently celebrated his 47th birthday by going for a 47 kilometre run, he’ll be there again – running up Arthurs Seat for a great cause. App invention has deals flocking A MORNINGTON man is hoping to take the world by storm with his new dealbased app, ifloc. Anthony Cincotta’s ultra-local app will send people notifications of deals available within a one kilometre radius of their location. “It is aimed to help businesses capture the market of people currently nearby, and to create a more instantaneous result,” said Mr Cincotta. That differs significantly from other deal applications, that offer deals with a much larger geographical location. “The idea is that somebody might be walking down Main Street Mornington, and deals will pop up on their screen as they walk. “They can get real dollar savings as they go about their day, without having to print off coupons or vouchers like other deal offerings”. As for the businesses, they will be able to log on anywhere in the world and create deals to better capture nearby business. It is hoped that this automation will lead to uptake in georgraphical locations far and wide. “We are starting it in Mornington, and just ironing out a few kinks to get it right, and then we hope it will organically roll out to other areas as businesses see the benefits of the app,” said Mr Cincotta. ifloc was a year in the making with Mr Cincotta working with business partner, Nick Waite, to bring the idea to fruition. ifloc will be officially launched at the Main Street Mornington Festival on Sunday 16 October. Sports clubs hit by thefts Continued fron Page 1 Music equipment including two Pioneer DJ turntables, amplifiers and microphones valued at more than $3000 were stolen from the Red Hill Football Club, 14-16 September, following a previous raid in August when $2000 in liquor was taken. Thieves ransacked the clubrooms after wrenching open double doors to enter the building. Vice president Harry Byrt said the club was a “soft target” for thieves. “Because we are in an isolated position, even if the alarm did go off it would take 20 minutes for the police to get here,” he said. “We need CCTV cameras to catch people’s faces or number plates.” St Andrews Beach Golf Club was broken into and power tools valued at $600 stolen, overnight Sunday 2 October. Thieves used bolt cutters to

cut padlocks on a garden shed. CCTV footage shows two men and a woman with a torch on the premises at 3am. “We are upping patrols on these areas to help catch these offenders,” Detective Drake said. Burglars are not only targeting sporting clubs: A cigarette vending machine valued at $6000 was stolen from the Kings Creek Hotel, FrankstonFlinders Rd, Hastings, overnight 27 September. Detective Drake said the thieves broke in through a smokers’ area window and wheeled the machine, containing an unknown quantity of cigarettes, out to a dark-coloured utility in the car park. Last chance for precious habitat Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au A FLYING mammal that lives on the Mornington Peninsula but is listed as “vulnerable” by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) could be the last hope of saving the former South East Water reservoir in Mt Eliza from development. Since South East Water announced plans last year to rezone the 2.8 ha Kunyung Rd site, it has largely been untouched and remains one of Mt Eliza’s last wildlife habitats. A variety of frogs, flying foxes and possibly the almost extinct southern brown bandicoot and the nationally significant white-footed dunnart live there. Environmentalists are concerned their protests over redevelopment plans are falling on deaf ears, with the lure of profit coming first. However, there are hopes that an appeal to protect the grey-headed flying fox may give protestors “a national lifeline”. The mammal, which eats native flowers, pollen and nectar and has colonies at the site, is known to play a vital role in keeping ecosystems in good health. Fears are also growing that most of the remaining environmentally sensitive land in Mt Eliza will soon be snapped up for development, with rumours that the buyer of the neighbouring Moondah estate in Kunyung Rd – Ryman Healthcare – is interested in acquiring the South East Water site. New Zealand-based Ryman Healthcare recently paid almost $40 million

Picture: Yanni for the 8.9-hectare waterfront property, and has indicated it is continuing to look for suitable sites to build more aged care facilities in Australia. South Eastern Centre for Sustainability president Steve Karakitsos said further development in the Kunyung Rd area was threatening already vulnerable species, such as the grey-head flying fox. He said South East Water’s plan to redevelop its Mt Eliza land for profit showed it had little concern for the “hundreds of thousands” of native species living there. “We all know about the giant panda and rhino but are oblivious to the animals in our own backyards,” he said. Mr Karakitsos said South East Water

should be true to its public image of caring for the environment. The company has refused to back down from its plan to rezone and develop the land for housing, with chief spokesman Rupert Posner saying last week that the matter was “still being considered”. Mr Posner, once the CEO for notfor-profit group Good Environmental Choice Australia, was quoted in online magazine Otter in 2013 as being concerned about the loss of orangutan habitat in south East Asia. “This refusal to acknowledge one of South East Water’s local assets of significant biodiversity and consistent refusal to protect this, blatantly contradicts the lip service of South East

Water’s commitment to sustainability,” said Mr Karakitsos. “This frightening outcome is avoidable and totally unnecessary.” Mornington MP David Morris, who raised the issue in parliament in August, has called on Environment Minister Lisa Neville to halt the development of the land for housing due to its importance in “supporting local wildlife”. Mr Morris called on the minister to “use her authority” to transfer the land to the Mornington Peninsula Shire so it won’t be “lost to housing”. But Mt Eliza planning activist Rebecca Taylor, who started residents’ group ‘Kunyung Says No’ and an online petition to save the land, said the council should start being “transparent” about its dealings with South East Water. “I have no faith in South East Water’s commitment to the environment, so it is important that what goes on between them and council is transparent,” she said. “The council originally told us it had contacted all relevant residents about the rezoning proposal, but when I did a survey of residents, only eight in Mt Eliza had received notification.” Environmentalists and residents are pushing for all or part of the 57 Kunyung Rd site to be rezoned for public open space or reserved as environmental nature corridors. A Mornington Peninsula Council report last year suggests it has adopted a pro-development stance, by stating that a panel hearing found “no basis on which to recommend any or all of the

land should be zoned Public Park and Recreation Zone or Public Conservation and Resource Zone as a result of its potential habitat values”. According to the report, the two-member panel had taken “unaccompanied” inspections of the site before making its findings. In August another council report stated it had taken “further advocacy” to achieve an open space provision of at least 10 per cent and some provision for affordable housing at the site. The impressive site has a complicated history and is within a broader 825lot suburban housing estate established in 1924. In the late-1950s, much of the land was owned by aviation pioneer Reg Ansett, who then bought further land from his neighbours and then sold this parcel to the government, which developed the reservoir. The Environment minster Lisa Neville said projects likely to have a significant impact on a matter protected under national environment law, such as a threatened species, must be submitted to the federal environment department to see whether federal assessment is needed. “It is the proponent’s responsibility to refer an activity under national environment law if they think it could cause a significant impact on a nationally protected matter,” she said. Mornington Peninsula Council, planning minister Richard Wynne, Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke and Ryman Healthcare all declined to comment when contacted.

Fireys offer heart help FIREFIGHTERS will be assisting paramedics at Frankston, Rosebud and Patterson River after the launch of an initiative to boost emergency responses to heart attack calls. The three stations are among five to receive the new Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program, which will also operate at Pakenham and Traralgon. Data from Ambulance Victoria shows the number of Victorians suffering heart attacks increased to a ten-year high last year. Firefighters at the five fire stations will now be dispatched to respond to triple zero calls for heart attack and non-breathing patients at the same time as paramedics. CFA and Ambulance Victoria trialled the program in 2011 and found it significantly improved response times and helped increase survival rates of heart attack patients. The five stations have been upgraded with emergency medical response equipment and defibrillators have been installed in the fire trucks. The firefighters have received specialist training to provide basic life support and give CPR. The EMR program at all 35 integrated CFA stations around the state, with 15 integrated stations now providing emergency medical responses. It is also in operation in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, which has successfully provided the critical first responder services since 2000. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino and Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessey visited the Frankston Fire Station on Monday (3 October) to launch the service. Mr Merlino said training firefighters to respond to heart attacks will help support paramedics and deliver faster emergency medical response times for growing communities.

Under the internationally-recognised model, professionalised foster carers will be trained to provide intensive support for children and young people who experience significant emotional or behavioural problems. The state government is investing

$5.6 million to trial a ‘Treatment Foster Care Oregon’ program, which supports the state’s child protection and family services system and aims to keep young people out of residential care. Professionalised foster carers will work with at least 28 children over two years, under the guidance of a team of practitioners who provide weekly training and support. More than $20 million for nine specific initiatives will be tested in southern Victoria.

OzChild and Anglicare Victoria will recruit and train carers to deliver the program in the bayside, peninsula and southern Melbourne areas. There will be at least 14 new, professionalised foster care placements a year, with OzChild to focus on children aged 7-11 years and Anglicare working with young people aged 12-18 years. The model has been successful in New York, where figures show it has reduced the number of children and young people in residential care.

State Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said the model has the potential to completely transform the way vulnerable children and young people are supported, with “life-changing impact�. Anglicare Victoria CEO Paul McDonald said it was expected that the majority of children and young people would be reunited with their families, where safe, or supported to reach their full potential “with loving kinship or foster care families�.

The mob may be dressed and made up as zombies as part of an independent short movie project called Benedict being filmed in Melbourne and its suburbs. It’s a ghoulish sight familiar to fans of TV show The Walking Dead but is slightly less common along the Frankston line. Zombies shuffled along to Mordialloc on a Sunday morning last month (18 September) to film some scenes under the railway bridge next to Mordialloc Creek. Bonbeach actor Rick Vaveliuk, 38, was one of the few, in his role as the titular Benedict, not infected by a zombie plague so still had the brainssss to tell The News about filming at Mordialloc for the spin-off prequel from another independent film due for release next year called The Last Hope. “The scene was set in Europe where the outbreak begins so it’s six months before the events in The Last Hope,� he said. “It was an escape scene at the train station so that’s why we used the tunnel and that part of Mordialloc because it fit the setting perfectly.� He said there were about 30 people on the makeshift set, “mostly zombies and a few civilians�. Approval for the early morning shoot was approved by Kingston Council, police, emergency services and Metro Trains. “Everyone was very helpful,� Vaveliuk said. The actor says he also shot scenes in Mentone, Brunswick and Doveton and “I’m spitting out all these little short

movies for practice�. A shorter version of Benedict is online on YouTube now and the scene filmed at Mordialloc will be added to “an extended director’s cut�. Benedict’s big brother film feature The Last Hope, written and directed by St Kilda resident Leigh Ormsby, is a zombie tale with a modern Australian twist. The film’s synopsis reveals: “The world has been devastated by the virus that has reanimated the dead to consume the living. Australia has so far remained unscathed through a brutal border protection policy and internment facilities.� As is the custom in such films, all hell breaks loose, this time due to the arrival of “a mysterious girl� and an uprising at a detention centre. “Will Australia, the last hope for many, finally fall?� the synopsis asks. The short film was partly financed by its makers via Pozible crowdfunding campaigns. Its modest budget aims to take some sharp shots at Australia’s and is billed as “a metaphor for everyone who sees Australia for what it is.� “For Australians, our country is a beacon of hope for many due to our high living standards, the fact we are so connected to the world, yet so isolated. “For anyone who lives here, there is hope that you can become someone. For people wishing to live here, Australia is a land of hope and freedom. Uninvited bees find new home IT wasn’t as dramatic as a fire, but Mornington fire station officer Simon Mildren was only too happy to respond to a call out of an unusual nature last week. A swarm of bees had made themselves at home on the front doorstep of a Mt Martha home and the owners – with young children – were a little nervous about them staying. Unsure who to contact, they alerted the brigade who arrived with a camera to make an educational documentary for similar occasions. Mr Mildren said swarms at this time of year were normal and, if left undisturbed, were relatively harmless. “This is hard for people to com-

prehend because a swarm is often noisy, however, it is important to know that they are just looking for somewhere to settle and make a new home,” he said. The station officer became interested in beekeeping several years ago as a way of making his favourite honey wheat beer. He has his own hive and happily added the Mt Martha bees to it. Fortunately, they all integrated well. “Bees are social creatures who usually venture three-five kilometres from home in search of pollen,” he said. “In this case, we were keen to support the family and, also, to save the hive and prevent it from being exterminated.” The bees, with their queen safely

protected in the middle of the swarm, were quickly rehoused into a plastic box – but not before the smell of the bees’ attack pheromone put him on high alert. Then it was back to the station and on to Mr Mildren’s Macclesfield home in the morning. “If you come across a swarm of bees you should leave them alone and contact your local council who maintains a list of beekeepers for this purpose,” he said. “It is best to leave swarm management to trained beekeepers so that no one – including the bees – gets hurt.” The film of the bee rescue can be seen on the CFA website, as well as an information brochure on beekeeping.

‘Tide of support’ for Dolphins Neil Walker neil@mpnews.com.au A STEERING group formed to help Frankston Football Club negotiate choppy financial waters says community support for the Dolphins’ continued existence is rising. Club record games holder Peter Geddes says the group is urging members and supporters to “keep your feet” and not stumble in backing the beleaguered club after AFL Victoria stripped its VFL licence for next season.

“We have been inundated with a tide of support for the Dolphins over the last week and are confident that we can put together an effective business plan to guide us through the next few years,” Mr Geddes said in a statement. The Dolphins will not be allowed to field a VFL side next season but plan to reapply for league membership in 2018. The football club was placed into voluntary administration in late August amid debts understood to be in excess of $1.5 million, mostly owed

to the state government and Tabcorp for pokies’ licences. The club removed all 27 electronic gaming machines at its newly built function centre in May this year. Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants, the administrators of the club, met with creditors last Monday (3 October) and creditors agreed to postpone any decision on the club’s future until a further meeting on 28 October. The Dolphins’ plight has united political opponents in a bid to keep the 129-year-old club alive despite the

loss of its VFL licence next year. Federal Dunkley Liberal MP Chris Crewther and state Frankston Labor MP Paul Edbrooke have joined the ‘Save the Frankston Dolphins Steering Committee’ alongside Frankston mayor Cr James Dooley. “It was very important to set up this committee as we all need to work together and, as a community, get strongly behind the Club to get it back on its feet and to restore its VFL licence,” Mr Crewther said. “Keeping the Frankston Dolphins going and as a VFL Club is important

because it creates so many opportunities for young footballers aspiring to get into the VFL or AFL and creates community outcomes, whether it be youth engagement, job opportunities, multicultural integration and the avoidance of many social pitfalls through community engagement. “I will be working my utmost hardest hand-in-hand with the local community to ensure this is the case”. The committee will examine the long-term financial viability of the football club, its governance and will arrange fundraisers in coming months.

Mental health disorders on rise Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au PEOPLE living in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula have higher levels of mental health disorders than the Victorian average, with health services struggling to cope with demand. Figures from the state’s mental health intake service, Neami, put the two areas ahead of some of its biggest neighbours, including Bayside, when it comes to mental health. Peninsula Health, the peninsula’s main providers of health services, is stretched to capacity, with waiting lists in many cases for people needing assistance. Peninsula Health operations director Sharon

Sherwood says demand for mental health care on the peninsula had been steadily rising for the past decade, with most patients requiring long-term treatment. Peninsula Health has about 115 residential beds in the public system for people with mental health illnesses, with about 70 of those available for young people. Courtney Gould from Headspace Frankston said the number of young people needing help was “huge”, with one in four young people – or about 10,000 people - in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula area experiencing a mental health issue in any 12-month period. The 2010 Australia Bureau of Statistics report gives a snapshot of mental health in young people

in Frankston, with 16.2 per cent of secondary students having very high levels of psychological distress, higher than the state average by 4 per cent. In 2010, almost seven out of every 1000 young people on the peninsula were hospitalised with a psychiatric condition, slightly higher than the Victorian average. In Frankston it jumped to around nine out of every 1000. Unemployment and homelessness are thought to be factors, with rates higher than the 12 per cent Victorian average in West Park (24.3 per cent) Baxter-Pearcedale (18.2 per cent), Tyabb (16.9 per cent) and Hastings (15.9 per cent). Depression is revealed as a key issue for young people in the recently released Local Government Areas Strategic Framework for Young People

2015-2019 report by Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Shire councils. An increase in young people with depression is also evident in Mornington Peninsula Shire’s ‘Communities that Care Healthy Neighbourhood School Survey’ results 2012 report. That survey found nearly one-third of young people in the Mornington Peninsula Shire had recently been bullied. Ms Gould said specialist support was the key to helping young people bounce back from mental illness. “We know that if a young person has a mental health issue and engages with treatment, they are less likely to go on to develop more issues,” she said. “They learn tools to cope, manage stress and look after themselves”. Headspace helps people recognise symptoms and learn where to get help and how to look after themselves and their friends. “The earlier things are picked up and dealt with, the quicker recovery time and less impact on their lives,” Ms Gould said. Homelessness has been a growing concern across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula for several years. Records from Christian group, SalvoCare, show there were 2200 “unique clients” seeking emergency housing in Frankston in 2012-13 and 600 “repeat clients”. Age no barrier for this music man AT 90, Sidney Cartlidge deserves a well-earned rest and could be forgiven for hanging up his harmonica. But the music has not stopped for the sprightly nonagenarian, who still enjoys entertaining others and can be found regularly delivering “music therapy” and playing tunes at aged care homes around Mornington. A harmonica player since he was 10 in Staffordshire, England, Mr Cartlidge’s love of music and enthusiasm for performing have not waned over the years, despite a forced hiatus in 2014 when he and his musician mates had to seek a new venue. At the time, the self-funded concerts he performed at the Morven Manor retirement village were so popular and the crowds so large that the band literally outgrew their welcome and had to start looking for a new venue with more parking spaces. Two years later Mr Cartlidge is still performing at aged care centres around the peninsula and still believes music therapy is the best medicine for all people in “their retirement years”. “It brings new friendships and extends the desire to get involved with many senior activities on the Mornington region,” he said. Mr Cartlidge firmly believes that brain functions such as knowledge and understanding are enhanced as people age, and that these open up new activities and opportunities. Hs determination to stay involved and be active is testament to that philosophy. At his home at Morven Manor “Sid” has a range of harmonicas to cover different events, a keyboard and his “latest find”, a Technics theatre organ. His repertoire is arranged to provide songs that relate to “the golden age” - great music of bygone days, including When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, Music from Amsterdam, It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, and Waltzing Matilda. LETTERS Rye’s up? How good is it that the council and Nepean ward councillors have finally come up with a plan to improve the Rye township, with their ‘Movement and Place’ proposal, or is it just another plan? The very brief two-page brochure proposes dividing the shopping centre in two. One half retains four lanes of traffic, street parking but gains a median strip. The other has all parking removed, is reduced to two lanes of traffic, has a widened footpath, but no median strip. Centre parking in Lyons Str is to be replaced with a median strip. It was stated that funding for all of this will be sought from VicRoads. It does not say whether the approximately 60 lost parking spaces are to be replaced, or if they are, where they will be. It does however mention the 2015 Draft Rye Beach Landscape Master Plan, which as it stands recommends relocating foreshore parking to be parallel to Point Nepean Rd. This might be good for the business community, but I believe foreshore parking was primarily built for beach users, not shops. Another proposal is to remove several metres of the foreshore parallel to Point Nepean Rd for a “highgrade” cyclists’ path, that the TAC is expected to fund. There is to be a special set of cyclists only traffic lights, at the eastern end of the town, which serious cyclists are expected to use, to cross to the foreshore for the length of the town. Why would they bother, when the busiest part of town is to have no car parking, and the other half has few shops? It seems to me that council planning is too heavily influenced by the availability of government grants, while the community’s priorities are largely ignored. Clifford White, Rye

‘Trust me’ pledge Council candidate John Woodman is splashing money on ads in the Mornington Peninsula News Group papers, to tell us “uninformed” voters about who to vote for at the present council elections. He neglects to mention that under rate capping, his main argument about keeping rates low has just evaporated, because they can’t easily rise above inflation. Also his answers on the Victorian Electoral Commission’s website questionnaire seem to indicate that he undertook no training for the position of councillor and has not read the current plan for Mornington Peninsula Shire. I wonder how much voters should trust his endorsement of the list of

candidates gleaned from his questionnaire. His remarks in a later article (“Candidates rail against poll play”, The News 4/10/16) about him working out the nuts and bolts of his policies of reducing council rates once he is elected, smack of the old “just trust me, I’ll do the right thing once you get me in” caper. I’m not sure that we should be swayed by his colourful advertising without much substance. I agree that council should keep the rates as low as possible, but not at the expense of good services like libraries and other social and environmental infrastructure. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring

Cost cutting ‘is easy’ Mornington Peninsula Shire election candidate John Woodman has caused a furore by suggesting that council rates and debt should be reduced (“Candidates rail against poll play”, The News 4/10/16). Reduce rates? I have never heard of that happening. Why, for the last decade or so the council has even slapped a surcharge ($193 this year) on top of the rates just because they can get away with it. Elected councillors must realise that they are there to represent their ward and their constituents, never themselves or their interests. They don’t need any special education or qualifications, ordinary people will be fine. Lots of common sense would help. Cutting costs is easy, just reverse the trend of “empire building” don’t expand into new unwanted and uncalled for services or activities. Keep out of things like climate change or carbon emissions for which councils are not qualified, trained, or responsible. Forget international compacts, sister cities, etc and just worry about all of us ratepayers. No councillor should ever get a paid overseas trip, no matter what the pretext, nor ever receive paid personal education. Councillors’ expenses and benefits should be limited to cover costs only. They already get a salary for this nice little four year part-time job. They are not company directors. They should not even be allowed to have a second term, for obvious reasons. After all of this, there is the council machine itself. It is 2016, we have computers and we don’t really need councils. They give us little for our rates. Basic functions are all contracted out, and ratepayers have to pay exorbitant fees to a private contractor to, for example, get a permit to build a simple garage in the backyard. Ratepayers should realise that most

of or rate money goes to propping up an archaic, unneeded fiefdom. Brian A. Mitchelson, Mornington

Councillors on move? Thanks to Alan Nelsen of the Mornington Peninsula Ratepayers Association for the update on the remaining councillors [Crs Celi, Colomb and Garnock] who voted to raise their spending allowances, and for pointing out that in the case of Cr David Garnock that allowance includes mileage from where he lives in Mt Eliza to Cerberus ward which he represents. I am wondering how this squares with the page 3 article headed “Three new Councillors” in the Mornington News of 30 October 2012 where Cr Garnock, “a Mt Eliza resident”, was reported as saying that he would be “moving to somewhere near his ward”. Chance for change It is my opinion that the sorry state of affairs that our Mornington Peninsula Shire council is in has been mainly caused by the previous CEO and most of our 11 councillors. The CEO has been replaced and we are seeing improvement. We now have the opportunity to fix the rest of the problem by removing all current and prior councillors who have renominated for election. During 2012-2013 I was very active with challenging the perceived mismanagement and nepotism that I saw as prevailing within our council. It was obvious to me that the councillors were part of the problem. We now have the opportunity for a solution. Please note that ex-councillor Leigh Eustace was the representative for Mt Eliza during the previous term, and hence part of the problem. Per Carlsen, Mt Eliza

Community ignored It is unfortunate that correspondents David Trunfall (“Limited consultation”) and Mechelle Cheers (“Community ignored”) in The News 4/10/2016 side with Liberal Party MP Martin Dixon, putting at risk much-needed capital investment by the state government and council to revitalise Rye. If Martin Dixon has his way, that capital investment would go to marine facilities at Rosebud. All this on top of the $4million plus recently provided by the state government to improve Rosebud. The correspondents have conveniently overlooked the fact that council resolutions of 25/11/2013

and 14/12/15 (each moved by me) provide for council “in principle” approval, “input from further consultations” and, in March 2016, council approval of the public exhibition of the draft Rye Foreshore Landscape Master Plan. I have attended a number of these extensive consultations by council officers with the Rye community and its agencies. These have included the correspondents. A major innovation of this draft landscape plan has been its coordination with traffic planning for the Rye area. Council’s traffic strategy engineers and landscape architects - working closely with VicRoads, TAC, the state government, Public Transport Victoria, and the Bicycle Network - have secured VicRoads “in principle” support for the Rye Movement and Place Streetscape proposal. This proposal provides a better balance of operational and safety for all road users including cyclists and pedestrians. It introduces exciting new streetscaping ideas along Pt Nepean Rd with increased pedestrian spaces and landscaping connecting the town with the foreshore. Again, council recently resolved to place this proposal on public exhibition and consultation with the community. I personally attended these public consultations - as did your correspondents. Great towns such as Rye, with its magnificent foreshore and beach, either progress or go backwards. I am determined that the Rye township be revitalised and progress with these innovative and exciting proposals. Cr Hugh Fraser, Nepean ward

Stand on record I am disappointed to see that Kate Roper is running a negative campaign against me (in the council elections) on the grounds that I don’t live in the ward that I have staunchly represented for the past four years. I note that two of the three other candidates don’t live in the ward and many of the previously elected councillors didn’t live in their wards either. Surely the important considerations should be whether I consulted widely with members of my community, represented them effectively in council meetings and achieved some observable benefits for the community. I stand by my track record to date and seek the community’s support to progress my plans for the next fouryear term of council. Irrelevant claims and outlandish objectives have no place in this election. Cr David Garnock, Cerberus ward

Aquatic centre intransigence’ So Cr Antonella Celi will “advocate for an aquatic centre to be built in Rosebud” if re-elected? Perhaps if Cr Celi, and likeminded intransigent councillors, had not been so myopic as to the scope, functionality and location of the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre during her term as a councillor, then we would probably now be enjoying the benefits of a facility that met the community’s needs. We did not need or want a “Taj Mahal-type structure” on the foreshore; a functional ‘box’ would have done. Perhaps worse still, given the shire has spent well over $15 million on consultants costs associated with the failed SPA concept and the purchase of Wannaeue Place as an alternate location for the centre, we could have actually paid for a functional Rosebud Aquatic Centre by now! It is hard to be convinced by Cr Celi’s election promises for the future, when they are based upon her past performance. Stuart Allen, Dromana

Should Motherhood be paid for? Compiled by Melissa Walsh THE war is revolutionising the position of women in the world. In the excellent current number of “ Everylady’s Journal “ Spencer Brodney puts the case for the mothers. His proposal—and it is not his alone, but that of many leading statesmen— is that motherhood should be endowed. In other words, the State should pay every mother, not a trivial £5 Baby Bonus to cover preliminary expenses, but a regular weekly sum of, say, 10s. or 12s., to enable her to feed, clothe, and educate the child properly. She should be paid for every child up to a certain age. The entire article is worth reading by every mother, even though the scheme may not appeal to every one as feasible. Other articles in this issue of “Everylady’s Journal” for October deal with more practical and not less interesting problems of economical living. On the lighter side, Madame Melba gives a detailed lesson in “Everylady’s Journal” on how to sing two of her favourite ballads, one of which is Tosti’s “ Good Bye.” Miss Mary Card is to the fore, as usual, with a very fine design for a linen crochet doyley; and there are several other attractive illustrated articles. ‘’ Everylady’s Journal” for October also includes scores of fashion designs, to say nothing of three or four free paper patterns. ***

The good old chestnut has not forgotten how to jump and when he is thoroughly wound up he will undoubtely cause some trouble in cross country events, indeed on Saturday it looked as if Zephuron might win, for it was only in the final pinch that his lack of condition told. *** A VERY successful evening was held in the Frankston Hall, on Saturday night last, in connection with the forthcoming Queen Carnival, in aid of the Roman Catholic Church. Considering the short time at their disposal for making arrangements, thie organizers should feel gratified at the splendid response. Miss Spillane and Mr Sherridan as Secretary and President worked most enthusiastically and to their efforts a great deal of the success can be attributed. Miss Daniels supplied the music, and the coffee supper was all that could be desired. *** THE meeting called for Monday evening in the Frankston Mechanics’

Hall, to promote the reply of “Yes”at the forthcoming Referendum was well attended, both sexes being well represented, and considerable interest was manifested in the proceedings. The chair was occupied by Cr J. A. Alden (President of the Shire of Frankston and Hastings), Crs Oates and Plowman also occupied seats on the platform. The chairman briefly introduced the speakers of the evening (Mr Gregory, barrister-at-law, and Mr Hugh Menzies), two gentlemen from the National Referendum Council, Melbourne. Mr Gregory in opening his address read the Question which the people of Australia will answer on 28th of this month, “Are you in favor of the Government having in this grave emergency, the same compulsory powers over citizens in regard to requiring their military service for the term of the war, outside the Commonwealth as it now has in regard to military service within the Commonwealt ?” He proposed to lay before them that evening some of the reasons why they should answer “Yes” on the 28th October. He also read portions of the Defence Act, dealing with those who were liable to be called up at time of war. Our Defence Act has provided thaat every male in the Commonwealth is liable to be called in defence of the Commonwealth, and the question is now asked “will you give the same answer to service outside the Commonwealth, as well as within it.”

When you consider the question there is no other logical course than to answer “’Yes.” For the first two years of the war the Germans were successful on every point, and marched from success to success, but fortunately, we just managed to hang on, and stop the complete annihilation of France, and now after 2 years we are in a position to put properly equipped armies into the field. Before we were ill prepared. The importance to Australia is this, that if Germany conquered Europe, she would soon conquer England and when the day of the supremacy of the British fleet ended, the Germans would come to Australia. It is difficult for us to realise that our homes are in danger but the British fleet is our only defence. We would not long hold out if Germany conquered Europe. If Germany can stick to what they have got no nation can possibly stand against them; they will be the most powerful nation that ever existed on the face of the earth. If we are to procure safety we must so defeat Germany that no German will want to go to war again. To do this we must have men. Every capable man must be prepared to go to the front and do their part. As soon as a man’s time has come he goes as a matter of course. Proudly losing my marbles By Stuart McCullough He tried. That’s the long and the short of it. With great persistence and determination, my father did his utmost to turn me into a well-rounded human being. That I have ended up with more angles than The Yellow Peril can hardly be his fault. Instead of developing an array of hobbies and interests, I succeeded in absorbing the tiny pieces of information that any one else would rightly regard as useless. If you’re heading to a pub trivia night, I’m your guy. But if you’re looking to shoot the breeze with someone who has a catalogue of fascinating pastimes, look elsewhere. Stamps. As odd as it may sound to anyone under twenty, people used to collect stamps. These were the little artworks that occupied the upper right hand corner of an envelope that, assuming you’d done your sums correctly, ensured your letter would be delivered to its intended destination. This was back before email was invented and the Iced Vo Vo was still the pinnacle of luxury. My father collected stamps as a child and assumed that I’d share his enthusiasm. Instead, I repaid this paternal attempt to foster an interest in philately as if he’d invited me to a trip to the dentist in a world without anesthesia. Perhaps it was because I never knew when it would come up. Randomly and without warning he’d suggest we should gather around the kitchen table and curate our stamp albums instead of sitting inertly in front of the television letting our minds turn

to fairy floss. This attempted intrusion into prime-time viewing was always greeted with horror. Not that this dissuaded my father. For as long as I can remember, the windowsill above the sink had a small glass of water in which the ripped right corner of an envelope was left to soak, to separate the envelope from the stamp. Come to think of it, I couldn’t even tell you what became of all those liberated stamps. Given the volume they would have occupied dozens and dozens of albums. I’m not sure they ever got that far. I suspect that the ritual of tearing the envelope and soaking the stamp was more important than where they ended up. For decades, my stamp album sat on the shelf of my father’s study. I suspect

it’s still there. Despite the fact that it probably hasn’t had a stamp added to it since 1978, my father has kept it. In the highly improbable event that I change my mind and decide to collect stamps again, my father will be ready. I wish I could say that it was only stamp collecting that I tried, failed and discarded. Fact is, there were so many other abortive attempts at hobbies that never really went anywhere, the remains of which are crammed into boxes and the far inaccessible corners of closets. By failing at stamp collecting, I never progressed to coins, pinball machines and sneakers like my brothers did. They have collected all manner of things. I was immune. In fact, my parents were so worried at my seeming disinterest in everything

that they panicked and suggested I collect rocks. When it comes to rock collecting, there are upsides and downsides. That you never have to feed them, water them or take them for a walk lest they should go stir crazy and start eating the furniture is a very good thing indeed. Given that every plant I have ever owned has inevitably come to grief by way of neglect, the ‘low maintenance’ status of rocks is pretty useful. But, then again, they’re not much in the way of company. In fact, even if you want to go for a walk around the neighborhood with your pet rock, you can’t. Or you can, that is, but it’s going to weigh you down somewhat. The rocks I collected occupied an entire shelf; far more space than the

stamp album ever did. Not only did they soak up valuable real estate on my bookshelf, rocks became my presumptive souvenir and birthday gift. Imagine unwrapping a piece of granite for Christmas. It was, in a word, underwhelming. Often, though, I had only myself to blame. Family holidays usually ended up in a gift shop of some description where we were always given five minutes and as many dollars to select something. My siblings had far better taste than I did and always emerged with something on the far side of awesome. I, on the other hand, only every secured a handful of pebbles. When it became apparent that my interest in rocks was waning, talk turned to marbles. There’s little I can say about marbles. My father seemed excited if not proud of his marbles. He explained that he’d collected these as a child and that they’d been a near-inexhaustible source of pleasure. He handed them too me as though they were treasure. Doubtless, he would have extolled the virtues of Aggies and Red Devils and the other members of the marble family. I, of course, promptly misplaced them. I am the very opposite of a collector – displacement is more my thing. Perhaps it’s okay to not be well rounded. Maybe there’s a certain pride you can take in being a hexagon, pentangle or nonagon. Forget smooth corners; edges matter in this world. But that being said, should you find my marbles, feel free to return them. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Panthers get away to a flyer PROVINCIAL By IT Gully PEARCEDALE has started its 2016-17 Provincial cricket season in fine fashion after knocking over last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s minor premier, Crib Point, in Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season opener. The Panthers have moved from Sub District to Provincial in the past two seasons after winning the past two premierships. There was no bigger test than coming up against Crib Point in Round 1 in a one-day match on Saturday. The Magpies won the toss and elected to bat on their home deck, scoring a defendable 5/162 against the new kids on the block. The Panthers started well with Brad

Trotter (26) and Matt Cousland (28) getting them going, however, they then lost 3/5 to go from 0/45 to 3/50. Brad Davidson took control with the ball and the field for the Magpies and got his side back into the contest. However, with three overs to spare, Shayne Gillings (49no) and Max Blackburn (31) steered the Panthers to victory. A massive innings of 89 from skipper Matt Foon helped Mornington to a thrilling win against Sorrento. His efforts with the bat supported his 2/38 with the ball. The Doggies chased down Sorrentoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6/159 with five overs to spare. Brad Lynch played a great supporting role for the Dogs with 36. Pines recruit Damien Lawrence

smacked six fours and seven sixes on his way to 93 against Moorooduc. Pines made a massive 9/208 against the home side. The Ducs replied with just 9/121 from 40 overs. Langwarrin has started its campaign the same way it did last season, causing a major upset by beating Somerville in the last over of the day. Teenage debutant Jai Elcock top scored with 37 for the Kangas at the top of the order in the chase, while Mal Coutts, Taylor Smith and Joel Bateman saw their team home after some early trouble. The Eagles batted first and made 8/145 with Nick Marshall and Sean

Parker top scoring with 31 opening the innings. Bateman was the best of the Kangasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bowlers with 3/22 off 10 overs, while Matt and Jake Prosser claimed a couple of wickets each. Peninsula Old Boys began its title defence with only a reasonable performance against Long Island, however, it was good enough to win. The Old Boys were bowled out in the 39th over with Will Crowder top scoring with 33 in the total of 146. Andrew Tweddle was the pick of the Islandersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bowlers with 3/37 while Stuart Swift claimed a couple. In the run chase, only three Long Island batsmen made it to double figures â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Pete Connell with 33, Greg Lamb with 17 and Swift with 11. The home

side was bowled out for 100 in the 32nd over. Adam Gailitis and James Labrooy picked-up 3/28 and 3/29 respectively. Baxter and Mt Eliza are expected to be two sides vying for a top four finish. Despite being bowled out for 108 with an over to spare, Baxter picked up the win. Nick Baron was the best of the Mt Eliza bowlers with 4/24 while Daniel Warwick top scored with 38 for Baxter. The Hillmen batted first after winning the toss and scored 4/205, thanks largely to Matthew Merifield, who blasted the only ton of the round - 114. Recruit Carl Robinson scored 23 on debut, as did Simon Dart. Robinson also took 1/31 from seven overs. In reply, the Pandas could put together only 7/136 from its 40 overs. Dart was superb opening the bowling, claiming 3/14 from five overs, while Glenn Collett was superb also with 1/20 from 10 overs with the new pill.

Flinders got its MPCA District season away to a flier on Saturday with a convincing 100-run win against Seaford. Batting first, the Sharks put together a formidable total in its 40 overs, scoring 7/214. Mitch Stansborough top scored for the visitors with 84, which included four fours and two sixes, while Brad Hogan-Keogh was just as convincing with 56. The pair took the Sharks from 3/68 to 4/164. Dil Pageni was the pick of the Seaford bowlers with 3/57. In reply, Seaford could muster just 9/104 from 40 overs. Sushant Gupta top scored for Seaford with 26 while Nick Simpendorfer hit 24.
