HISTORICAL
WHITEWATER A city rich in history Whitewater was established by the Potawatomi who settled here at the convergence of two rivers, a land rich in resources and potential. Earlier Native Americans, the great mound builders of the late Woodland Period, created the burial ground that is now the Whitewater Effigy Mound Preserve at 288 S. Indian Mound Parkway.
A city is born
Due to the outcome of the 1832 Black Hawk War, the Native Americans in the area were displaced west of the Mississippi River. In the year 1837, Whitewater was flooded with colonists looking for plots of land. The city steadily grew until 1852 when the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroads chose Whitewater as a stop between Milwaukee and Prairie Du Chien. This caused an explosion of people flooding the streets, bringing commerce and goods right into the city. Not only did it bring people, it allowed Whitewater’s industries to sell to outside markets causing them to grow and in return hire more workers. 6

The year 1881 Whitewater was growing exponentially in the years prior to 1881, but by the time the year began, a series of snowstorms had devastated the community, leaving the city in a state of peril. Horses and wagons couldn’t get down the street and factories couldn’t open their doors to their workers. One of the largest snowstorms during this time lasted more than 40 hours! In the end, the snow wasn’t the worst of it. Because of the high amount of snow that accumulated during winter, when spring came around, the water flooded the area
causing even more havoc and damage. If giant snow banks and Main Street rivers weren’t enough, a number of fires leveled multiple blocks of the downtown area. After building new dams, bridges and infrastructure, Whitewater rebounded and in the process, learned a lesson or two. Visit the Discover Whitewater office at 150 W. Ice Age Trail/Kettle Moraine State Park Whitewater embraces a life of quality, health, and engagement. We are the gateway to the Kettle Moraine State ForestSouthern Unit and throughout our community you will find opportunities to experience the peacefulness of rolling hills and beautifully clear lakes. We are a proud Ice Age Trail Community, and the Whitewater Lake Segment of the trail features wooded moraines, kettle lakes, and outstanding views from atop a steep rise. Look for weekly guided hikes as well as trail events throughout the year – even in the winter! For more information, visit www.iceagetrail.org and search for Walworth Jefferson County.
Walking If you enjoy a good walk, but hiking the trails is not your thing, check out one of the many walking paths around Whitewater. We have a number walking paths that take you through our downtown district, along the lakefront, through historic neighborhoods, and along natural reserves and creeks. A must do is the nature preserve on the UWW campus where you can embrace the wonder of the local natural habitat. Can we put a map with this section? We have a walking map that I can provide.
Biking Let us help you discover your Cycling adventure in Southeastern Wisconsin. Whether you prefer the exciting challenge of trail riding or the paved country roads, Whitewater is the destination for you. Nestled at the tip of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and Ice Age Trail, recreation opportunities abound with a variety trail loops and connecting road routes. The John Muir and Emma Carlin trails provide a variety of loops for all skill levels. Like something a little more low key? Check out the more than 160 miles of country road loops meandering through the fields and forests of Walworth, Jefferson and Rock counties. 8

Fun on the water During the summer and fall many visitors take to the lakes around Whitewater to enjoy the pristine waters and endless fun activities. Boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and water-skiing are among the favorite ways to take advantage of the cool and refreshing waters. You can stop into JNT’s Marina to rent a pontoon or kayak for an afternoon of fun on Rice or Whitewater lakes or spend the afternoon at the Whitewater Lake beach to picnic and play!

Golfing Nothing can be more satisfying that hearing the crack of a golf ball as it sails across a manicured fairway in the morning mist. Whitewater is centrally located to courses in Walworth and Jefferson counties and makes the perfect headquarters for your golf filled weekend trip. There are 2 courses in Whitewater and 22 courses within 20 miles from town to challenge every level of play. Our hometown favorite is Willow Brook Golf Course, a quick 5-minute drive from any of our lodging properties.
Rainy days at the Whitewater Aquatic & Fitness Center We know the weather isn’t always perfect for outdoor activities but there are still great things to do that keep you active. The Aquatic Center of Whitewater is 30,000 square feet of fun and adventure for the whole family. The center features a three-story, 120-foot-long waterslide, leisure pool, lap pool, lazy river, play structure and whirlpool.
20 years of weekly hikes Whitewater is a proud Ice Age Trail community and has embraced the wonder of the trails for as long as the trails have gone through our area. Since 1993 a dedicated group of volunteers have taken care of the trails around Whitewater and worked to engage area residents and visitors in outdoor recreation. 20 years ago, in 2002, a small group of these volunteers led by Russ Helwig, began a weekly hike program. These hikes happen year-round, twice a week, and offer hikes of various lengths to meet the needs of both seasoned hikers and those who are brand new to the adventure. In 2015 Russ passed away and Norwin
Watson took over as leader for two years before he passed. Currently Andy Whitney leads the weekly hikes along with other members of the local chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. In 2022 the Walworth/Jefferson County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance will be celebrating this special anniversary with an array of special hikes and activities throughout the year. We encourage you to be sure to join the fun when you are visiting Whitewater! If you have made Whitewater your home, we encourage you to become one of the trusted volunteers that care for the trails that go through our community and surrounding areas. Roberta’s Gallery 190 Hamilton Green Way, UC Room 158 www.uww.edu/uc/thingsto-do/robertas-art-gallery Stop into the UW-W University Center and take a look at the work of talented students, faculty, and community members in the collaborative creative space known as Roberta’s Art Gallery. The purpose of the gallery is “to inspire individuals to explore their creativity and share their stories.” This purpose is realized through the free exhibits open to all where visitors can often meet the artists to learn about their processes and experiences. The gallery also offers free creative workshops each semester open to the campus and surrounding community.
Cravath Lakefront Amphitheater One of the newest amenities in Whitewater is the amphitheater at Cravath Lakefront Park. This upgraded facility allows for a wider variety of usages. Entertainers will appreciate the large permanent roof as well as the convenience of built in electrical, sound and lighting. Attendees will enjoy the view of Cravath Lake as they attend live performances. The large stage provides space for activities to be sheltered from the direct sun and rain. The Amphitheater, completed in the summer of 2020, is made possible through the generous sponsorship by the Frawley Family, Whitewater Rotary and the Whitewater Fourth of July Committee. Cravath Park Amphitheater will host Concerts in the Park, Family Fun Nights, the 4th of July music festival and Little Miss Whitewater Pageant, and the new Storytelling Festival. Small Town Story Time at the Book Teller
Stop by The Book Teller in downtown Whitewater to find your next adventure in literature. While there you might also find the perfect locally crafted gift for that special occasion, or a beautifully crafted piece of jewelry made by the owner herself! This small-town bibliophile’s haven is housed in what used to be a local bank, vaults and all! The warm and cozy atmosphere you will find there is enhanced by the soft music coming from the record player and the many friendly conversations had between locals and visitors alike. You can cozy up on the comfy chairs to read for a while or take your latest book selection down to the Cravath Lakefront Park to enjoy. The shop sells gently used books of all genres and brand-new copies of books written by local authors. In the warmer months of the year, you will find a regular schedule of open-mic nights held in the community gathering

space that is created by the closing of one block of First Street between Main Street and Center Street, right next door to the store. As the weather turns colder you might find a local author giving a reading of their work in the store, or young talented university students sharing their creative side with the community through poetry readings. The owner, Karen McCulloch, is an avid supporter of the arts and one of the key figures in making the Whitewater Storytelling Festival happen. This local favorite is a must do when visiting Whitewater and we are sure that new residents to the community will find it a regular stop during the week.

FEATURED EVENTS Whitewater Storytelling Festival 2021 saw the launch of the brand-new Whitewater Storytelling Festival in our community. With Whitewater’s longstanding commitment to the arts, we couldn’t think of a better place to introduce the magic of storytelling to the region. The family friendly festival celebrates the art of storytelling and echoes the tradition started at the National Storytelling Festival in Tennessee 50 years ago. We are pleased to be able to bring amazing storytellers to our small university town and participate in this wonderful tradition. Discover Whitewater Series Race
In September of 2013 the Greater Whitewater Committee (GWC) launched the Discover Whitewater Series, a half marathon and 5K race now held annually every September. This race promotes the City of Whitewater and highlights its greatest features along with promoting a healthy lifestyle. The Discover Whitewater Series race was created as a way to raise money to support the GWC’s goals to educate, advocate, and develop ideas that make Whitewater a destination of choice. In the first nine years of the race, they raised almost $230,000 for local organizations to help build a stronger community. The race provides a challenging course to all participants and offers some great perks for runners. In 2022 we are celebrating the 10th running of the race and excited to be able to offer a full slate of weekend activities including a Fit Kid Shuffle, Kids Corral, a Half Marathon, 5K, and wheelchair 5K and Half Marathon as well. Annual Spirit Tour Whitewater is known as the “Second Salem” and famous for the “Witches of Whitewater” legends. The community is known as the original home of the Morris Pratt Institute for spiritualism (now residing in Milwaukee) and has a multitude of stories surrounding alleged murders, occult practices, and witches. The annual Whitewater Spirit Tour tells the story of the haunted history of Whitewater and features local houses, businesses, and cemeteries associated with our history. Attendees have a unique behind-the-scenes access to visit sites related to the stories of Mary Worth, the Winchester family, serial killer Nellie Horan, the “Witches Tower,” and the Poison Widow. This event is hosted by the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce and held over one weekend in October every year. The event is made possible by many volunteers who take on the roles of the famous characters, giving attendees a true glimpse into the haunted history of Whitewater. Whitewater’s Fourth of July Festival is all about celebrating family, friends, and community. The committee that puts this local favorite event together is committed to honoring and celebrating our freedom and independence. The festival runs 3 to 4 days each year over the holiday and includes a carnival with food vendors, a parade, a fun-run, a car show, a pageant, musical acts, and an impressive fireworks show each night. Tree City Whitewater, WI is proudly designated as a Tree City USA community. In addition to this designation, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is known as a Tree Campus USA site by the Arbor Day Foundation. We take pride in knowing that the whole community of Whitewater is committed to fostering and supporting a healthy botanical and sustainable local environment. The UWW campus also received, in 2020, a Level II accreditation by the Interactive Community of Arboreta for the generous population of trees that it has been growing and maintaining since 1873. The Salisbury Arboretum was originally established by Albert Salisbury, the former President of what was then the Whitewater Normal School. His vision was to ensure that every kind of tree, shrub, and forb that would grow in the local climate found a home on the campus. In 1975 the Chopp Arboretum was dedicated and added 7.6 acres of arboretum space and 310 trees to the campus grounds. Joseph Chopp, former biology professor, had a desire to continue the work of Salisbury ensuring that the wooded areas on campus were preserved and to beautify the campus. The current master plan of the university is to continue this tradition and with the 150th anniversary of the campus they launched the Salisbury Idea project and 50 Trees for 50 Years initiative. These efforts, intended to continue the tradition of having as many native trees on
the campus as possible, paved the way for their recent designations. Visitors to Whitewater and the campus can take self-guided tours of the hundreds of trees that fill the grounds of this historical property (www.uww.edu/sustainability/ campus-initiatives/ salisbury-idea). The city of Whitewater joined the arboretum efforts in 2021 by establishing an active educational arboretum on the grounds of Starin Park. The Neumeister Arboretum will showcase a wide array of native trees while providing a way for residents and visitors to learn about each species as they tour the grounds. The goal of the arboretum is to encourage and inspire community members and visitors to understand the importance of trees and to teach the stewardship of them in our local, regional, and global environment.
