How to make the most of kids’ first angling experience ishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.

Starting simple
Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.
Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local

fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.

Boating is a safe and fun activity when boaters maintain their boats and take steps to protect themselves from dangers like carbon monoxide.
Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning on your boat Boating is a rewarding hobby that allows people to spend ample time on the water enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and boating might go hand in hand, but a danger may be lurking in the air on or around boats that can put boaters’ health in jeopardy. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, carbon monoxide, or CO, can accumulate anywhere in or around a boat. Inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and blocked exhaust outlets are just two places where CO can accumulate. Exhaust also can get trapped in enclosed places, potentially leading to the accumulation of CO. Fortunately, the USCG notes that CO poisoning is entirely preventable. Routine maintenance and attentive boat ownership can protect boaters and their passengers from the threat posed by CO poisoning.

What are the dangers of CO poisoning? CO is produced when carbon-based fuels burn. Such fuels include gasoline, charcoal or oil, so boat engines are not the only potential source of CO poisoning on a boat. Gas generators, cooking ranges and space and water heaters also pose a threat. CO is dangerous because it can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, preventing the body from getting the oxygen it needs. The USCG notes that both prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO or very quick exposure to high concentrations of CO can prove fatal.

Main St., will assist decorating bikes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3. Bicyclewise has been supporting the Fourth of July parade for more than 18 years. Bicycle judging will take place at 9 a.m. July 4 at Lincoln School.
WHIPPET CITY MILE The annual Whippet City Mile is just before the parade, starting about 9:45 a.m. on July 4. The course follows the parade route beginning on the corners of Highland and Prince, progressing onto Main Street, and then finishing downtown. The race is open to anyone who is looking to run his or her fastest mile ever in front of thousands lining the parade route. The last seventh-tenths of the mile cruises down hill into Whitewater’s downtown area. Registration is $10 and includes a T-shirt and a finishing medal. Master Sgt. Jason Dean, a native of Chicago, Illinois, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in July of 1997 as a ground communications technician. He deployed to Iraq in January of 2003 and again in January of 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was wounded in action while serving with 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in Al Karmah, Iraq in 2006 and received the Purple Heart Medal for those wounds received in action. He rose through the ranks to senior leadership in a Company of 427 Marines and Sailors. In 2014, Dean was selected to represent the Marine Corps on the highly competitive Wounded Warrior Congressional Fellowship Program where he served on the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans affairs under Sen. Bernie Sanders. Dean’s success serving in the U.S. Senate resulted in selection to serve in the Pentagon as the special advisor to the deputy assistant secretary of defense, advising senior Pentagon officials on issues pertaining to wounded, ill and injured service members. Dean retired from this position in November of 2017 because of injuries he suffered in a motor vehicle crash and moved to Whitewater with his wife and children. Dean has held certifications as a congressional fellow, emergency medical technician, Marine Corps Martial Arts black belt instructor trainer, navy drug abuse counselor and casualty assistance call officer. His personal awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good

MUSICAL ACTS This year’s live music includes returning performers and new acts. Titan Fun Key opens the fun, taking the stage from 8 to 11 p.m. July 3 The entertainment lineup on the Fourth of July begins at 2 p.m. with the Steve Meisner Band and continues with The Dots at 5 p.m. and the Beatles tribute band, The Britins, at 8 p.m. Mini Maxx will perform at 5 p.m., followed by Dixie Crush at 8 p.m. on July 5. Bands on stage July 6 are Kalamarez at 2 p.m., Brendan Frank at 5 p.m. and Wunderlich at 8 p.m.
FOOD VENDORS All food and beverage purchases are handled through “festival dollars” which can be purchased at information/ticket booths in $.50 increments and/or sheets of $10 increments. Concession booths inside the carnival area are separately managed by Chrisman Amusements – festival dollars may not be used for purchase at carnival food trucks. The festival’s food vendors are all non-profit area organizations that use this opportunity as a fundraiser for community programs and projects. On the menu for this year are: • First United Methodist Church – pulled
pork dinner/sandwich, stuffed baked potato, sweet corn, pickle on a stick, slushies, big cookies, root beer floats; • Knights of Columbus – creme puffs, chocolate eclairs, rocky’s pizza, fudge brownies; • Whitewater Optimist; • Whitewater Lions Club – hot dog, bratwurst, hamburger, cheeseburger, steak sandwich; • The American Legion – adult beverages; • Congregational UCC; • Cristo La Roca – pambazos, sopes, tostadas, flautas, burritos, quesadillas, gorditas, chicharoones, preparados; • Whitewater Family Church – smoothies, blended coffees, soft serve ice cream and shakes, sundaes; • Living Savior Luthern Church – Italian sausage/buns, grilled cheese sandwich,
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, potato chips, Rice Krispy treats; and • St Patrick Catholic Church – beef tacos, chicken tostadas, chicken flautas, chilindrinas, fresh fruit cups.

Savory Sounds series returns The Whitewater Arts Alliance will present its 2019 Savory Sounds concert series at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St. Events are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursdays, June 20 and 27 and July 11 and 18. 6 ways to stay safe around the water this summer Summer is here, which means that more children will be in and around water areas such as pools, lakes and oceans. Like many parents, you worry about your children’s safety around water, no matter how old they are. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children aged 1 to 4, and the third leading cause of unintentional injury death in children and adolescents aged 5 to 19. Two children die every day due to drowning, and according to a study from the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, 88 percent of children who drown do so while under adult supervision. Many don’t realize that drowning can occur quietly, with no overt signs that the child is in trouble. The good news is that you can follow safety tips – and teach your children skills – to help keep them safe while enjoying water activities. Supervising children vigilantly and creating barriers to accessing water unexpectedly are the first steps in averting a tragedy. Lindsay Mondick, Senior Manager of Aquatics at YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) offers important safety tips to protect your children from harm around water, whether it’s in the bathtub, at the beach or in a pool. Never swim alone Nobody should swim by themselves, in case of accident. Teach your children that they should never enter the water anywhere without a lifeguard and/or responsible caregiver attending them. Stay attentive and watch without distraction If you’re with a large group, or even if a lifeguard is present, designate one person to watch the child or children at all times. If children are in a pool or near a body of water, a caregiver needs to be close, paying full attention
