Boating is good for your health and mind
As the coronavirus pandemic continued to weigh on the world, the former director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention had a simple message for Americans: get outside. “Enjoy nature,” Tom Frieden said. “It’s good for us, and it has very low risk of spreading the virus.” Everyone from the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner to health experts from Harvard University echoed Frieden’s comment, saying research continues to show that outdoor activities – including boating – are a much better way of staying safe from the virus than any type of indoor activity. The research is why boat ramps and marinas were among the first public spaces and businesses to reopen following the initial COVID-19 shutdowns. Even in hardest-hit states in the Northeast, officials determined that getting out on a boat could be done safely while other recreations like golf remained off-limits. “Boating or paddling can provide a refreshing outdoor escape during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Peter Francis, boating division director for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Being able to go boating during the pandemic – or at any time, really – is great news, because studies also show that being on or near the water is a boon for psychological health. And who among us couldn’t use a mood booster now and again?
Igniting your ‘blue mind’ Wallace J. Nichols, the author of Blue Mind, knows all of this information well. His bestselling book looks at the scientific reasons why being in, on or under the water can make us happier and healthier. “Simply the mere sight and sound of water promotes wellness by lowering cortisol, increasing serotonin, and inducing relaxation,” Nichols said. In fact, he says, when it comes to reducing stress, being on a boat can be considered a type of medicine. “Blue mind is when we disconnect and logout,” Nichols continued. “We move away from the screens and we get out on the water, and leave all of that technology and information behind. We give our brains a break—and our brains love that.”

Water is healing In October 2019, researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom published a study showing that people who live near the ocean are 22 percent less likely to report depression and anxiety symptoms than people who stay inland. The beneficial effects of “blue health” – interacting with bodies of water – were especially high among lower-income households.
The British study followed a Canadian study in 2018 showing that people living closer to the water lowered their risk of mortality by as much as 17 percent. The “protective effects” of being near bodies of water were especially noteworthy among women and older adults. In fact, just the sounds of bodies of water can help to reduce stress, according to a 2013 study. Get yourself within earshot of a lake, river or ocean, and you can immediately feel better.
The power of sunlight In late-April, during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security also released a study related to the life cycle of the virus on non-living surfaces. The study detailed the anticipated times the virus can survive on surfaces given variations in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight. In the end, the results concluded that the virus would die in about two minutes at a temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity at 80% and direct exposure to sunlight, which is good news for boaters. According to a recent Harris poll, one in five Americans said they’re more likely to try these activities than they were prior to the pandemic. And among parents, the statistic is one in four. Most arrangements for boat sharing are made on an app or via computer, minimizing personal contact and eliminating the need to enter an office. You can also inquire with the owners about their boat cleaning and sharing procedures to ensure a healthy transaction.
Join a boat club
Find a boat club near you to access a variety of boats. You’ll pay a monthly fee and be able book your time on the water online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning, maintenance, and boat training courses, which all follow new CDC and social distancing guidelines.

For many of us, discovering a love of boating and being out on the water started when we were youngsters being pulled on a tube behind the family boat. If that was how you came to love boating, you can probably still remember your first time on a tube. It was glorious, wasn’t it? Boat tubes started out pretty humbly, with someone lashing one end of a rope to a truck inner tube and the other end to a
The best water tubes are those that best meet the needs of your riders. If you’re pulling 4-year-olds, you don’t need a flying tube. You need something safe that your kids will ride and have fun in. Safety begins with a personal flotation device that fits properly. Kids can fall off tubes, so it’s best that they be wearing a life jacket that stays put. There are literally hundreds of options, but we also recommend bright colors for kids because it makes them easier to see in the water.
How to pull a tube behind a boat 1. Ensure you have the proper equipment – life jackets, tow rope, towable tube and a boat.
2. Designate a driver and a spotter. 3. Attach the tow rope to the tube. 4. Tie off the rope to the stern (back) of the boat.
5. Review safety hand signals for communication between spotter and those riding on the tube.

It’s also important to realize that a towable tube swings out wide opposite of the direction you’re turning, so it’s especially important to be aware of shorelines, docks, trees and other boats. Tubing FAQs Q. What is tubing in water? A. Tubing is an entry level water sport that nearly anyone can take part in, from kids to senior citizens. You can tow a tube with nearly any kind of boat, from pontoons, to bowriders and deck boats.
Q. How to keep rope out of water when tubing?
A. Oftentimes, the rope gets submerged in the boat’s wake and results in the rider getting jerked around and maybe bounced off the tube when the slack is removed. This is a tricky question because there is no way to keep the rope out of the water all the time, but the driver can help minimize the effects by being smooth on and off the throttle and by not carving too tight a turn and churning up a big wake.
Q. How to patch a water tube? A. Most of the major water sports retailers sell patch kits for water tubes. It’s a
lot like patching a regular inner tube. Scratch the surface of the rubber around the hole, apply the glue and the patch and let dry. Then, hope it holds.
Q. What to wear water tubing? A. First and foremost, you need a life jacket, also called a personal flotation
device. Board shorts also are a must and because you might be lying on a tube and hanging on, you also should wear a rash guard, which is a type of shirt that guards your skin against irritation.
Q. Where can I buy water tubes? A. Your local Target or Walmart might have them during the summer months, but
major online watersports retailers such as Bass Pro Shops, Overton’s, Bart’s and West Marine have large selections of tubes, ropes and life jackets, everything you need—all year long.

you plan to pull. To pull a tube, you’ll need a tow rope, and they’re sold based on the number of people you’re planning to tow, so choose appropriately. Like ski ropes, ropes for tubing have a little “give” to them. In fact, some tow ropes for tubes have a “bungee” function to them, which makes the ride a little more fun if you have riders who can handle it. Types of boats used for tubing What makes tubing so great is that you can do it with virtually any kind of boat. From bowriders to deck boats, ski boats and cruisers, anything works. Even pontoon boats with little engines are suitable for towing your little tykes on a tube. Types of towable tubes Today’s towable water tubes are more
comfortable and usable than ever. They’re also a lot more fun. Some are designed to hold single riders, and some are made for two. You can even buy tubes for three and four riders at a time. Almost all new PWC models are rated to carry three people, but not all are really comfortable with three adults on board. Mid-size three-passengers models can carry three adults in a pinch but two adults and a child is really more realistic. Some of the smaller rec-light-category models, and some high-performance PWC, are rated for two passengers. A three-passenger model offers seat room and buoyancy to comfortably carry two adults for a long cruise. That threepassenger rating is also a requirement when using a PWC to tow tubers or wake boarders in most states. Rec-light models These most-affordable PWC models can carry two adults (or two adults and a child), have a 60 to 100 HP engine, and can reach a top speed of about 45 MPH. They don’t really have enough power to tow a tube or boarder, and often don’t have some of the convenience features found on larger models. They also have a smaller and lighter hull that works fine in smooth water but can deliver a rougher ride when conditions get choppy. Recreation models The mid-rage offered by PWC manufacturers, these models are larger and faster than the rec-light models, and can come with more features. Engine options may range from about 120 to 180 HP, good for a top speed of 50 to 60 MPH. Features offered on Recreation models include electronic reverse control, speed control options, performance options (such as a fuel-saving ECO mode), security systems, and optional audio systems. Some models can be set up for long-range cruising with a bolstered seat, or for towing with a tow-line pylon. Luxury/touring models These feature-laden models offer the most-powerful engines, with more than 300 HP available and a top speed exceeding 65 MPH. The large hull – over 11 feet long – is designed to offer a comfortable and stable ride in most water conditions. They also offer more storage and fuel capacity than the Recreation

models. Electronic trim and reverse controls, adjustable speed and performance options, a touch screen display, a security system, adjustable handlebar angle are often standard equipment. There are models designed for specifically for touring, fishing and tow sports. Performance models Designed for experienced riders looking for no-compromise performance inspired by competition, a Performance PWC is often the quickest and fastest boat on any lake. The hull and deck is often molded from special lightweight material, the jet pump is enhanced with special components, and the highest horsepower engine is placed under the seat. The result is not just top speed approaching 70 MPH, but eye-popping acceleration and razor-sharp handling. These are not machines intended for beginning riders. Stand-up models This is where the sport began – a narrow hull with a handlebar control mounted on a moveable pole. Riding a stand-up PWC requires some athletic ability and a lot of practice, but it’s that challenge that many riders find rewarding and entertaining. Currently the Kawasaki Jet Ski SX-R is the only Stand-Up model available for recreational riding. The Yamaha SuperJet is sold only for closed-course competition. Pre-owned models are an option for those who want to give a stand-up model a try. Gear and accessories Most PWC owners have a trailer to transport the craft, even if it’s kept on the water during the riding season. A trailer will be needed to transport the craft for service and off-season storage. A Type III personal floatation device must be worn when riding a PWC. Neoprene shorts or PWC trunks with a neoprene liner provide the PWC rider and passengers with a comfort and protection. A PWC wet suit can be worn for riding in cold water or for extending the riding season.
