Lanesway to host car and truck show COMMUNITY EVENT TO INCLUDE HOMETOWN HERO HONOR

Lanesway is a foundation that was established last year by Lane Schweitzer’s family after he was tragically killed in a motorbike crash at the age of 15. Lane’s mom, Judy Schweitzer said Lane was full of life and in the short 15 years he had here on earth he touched many lives. “He was our hero as he fought through a battle after suffering a traumatic brain injury in 8th grade,” she said. The Elkhorn community and surrounding communities as well as friends and family offered a great deal of support to Lane and his family during the difficult journeys of both his brain injury and his untimely death, his mom said. Lanesway was established as a way to give back, according to Schweitzer, to help support the community, further education and support veterans and current military, the latter of which was a cause especially close to Lane’s heart. He also loved his truck, his mom said, so the family came up with a way to tie Lane’s passions together for an upcoming event. The foundation will be hosting the Lanesway Car & Truck Show on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Elkhorn Area High School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All vehicle types are welcome for the event. Registration will be available on the website lanesway.org after July 1 and more details about the event will continue to be shared as they become available. Among what’s already planned for the show is that veterans and the victims and first responders from 9/11 will be honored and there’s a special reason those groups have been chosen, according to Schweitzer. “This will be a very patriotic event so bring on the red, white and blue! and choose a hero to be honored. “If this car and truck show is successful we plan on making it an annual event so we can honor our heroes every year,” Schweitzer said. She said they also welcome any businesses interested in helping out with the event, including food and drink vendors. “There will be no fee to be a vendor as the event will all be done through donations only. We want to support our local businesses and local vendors,” Schweitzer said. Though more details will continue to be shared as the event gets closer, Schweitzer said she wanted to get the word out now so people can mark their calendars, sign up as a vendor and submit letters for the hometown hero honor that will take place. “Lane lived through kindness everyday that he was here on earth,” Schweitzer said. “Giving back to others is a way for me to keep him alive because that’s who he was and how he lived.” Anyone interested in having a booth or be a food vendor is asked to call Schweitzer at 262-745-1421 or send an email to lanesfullsend@gmail.com. A local Civil War veterans groups is in the process of restoring the historic Lafayette Church. Camp 15 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, based in Wind Lake, is the new owner of the defunct church and is working to fix up the church, which has been a landmark in the community for 150 years. Originally named the First Congregational LaFayette Church, the church was established on July 4, 1855, on the prairies of Lafayette Township and served the early settlers in the township. Around a dozen Civil War soldiers are buried in White Oak Cemetery adjacent to the church. Dave Daley said the members of Camp 15 have a strong connection to the church and the cemetery. “We’re a fraternal organization made up of descendants of the soldiers who fought in the Civil War,” Daley said. “We want to make sure the church and cemetery are maintained for history.” One of the soldiers buried in the cemetery is Tom Pollak, who farmed just northeast of the church, and later served as a sergeant in the Civil War. Pollak helped found the church and is buried in the cemetery. Also buried there is Jonathan Dwight Stevens, a sergeant in Co. D, 20th Wisconsin Infantry, and the son of Lafayette Church’s first pastor. That pastor, the Rev. Jedediah D. Stevens, was a well-known missionary to Native American tribes in the Upper Midwest before coming to Lafayette Township, and himself served during the Civil War as a sanitary agent in the South, working to ensure safe sanitation and medical care for Union Army soldiers. The church is just west of the intersection of Walworth County Highway D and Highway ES, about five miles southwest of East Troy. “We are proud to take over the church and pledge ourselves to preserving the church in a way that honors the love the Lafayette Township community has for this

church,” said Bob Koenecke, a top officer in Camp 15. Koenecke, who helped start the restoration of the church 10 years ago, worked on the deed transfer with members of the Wuehrmann family who had owned the church. “When Lafayette Church basically went defunct around 1980, Kyle Reed’s father took over the church and he used it for a scholarship foundation to honor his son,” Daley said. By the early 1980s, with dwindling membership, services at the church ended and the building fell into disuse although burials continued in the adjacent cemetery. The PIP Foundation, operated
by William Wuehrmann Sr., who had ties to the area, took over the church, and through the foundation, awarded more than 50 scholarships to architectural students in memory of his son, William Phillip Wuehrmann, Jr. The church was also used for occasional weddings, Thanksgiving services and other social events. In 2010, Bob Koenecke and Pat Kulas from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, began renovating the church, putting on a new roof and repainting both the outside and inside of the building. “So that’s how the Sons got started restoring the church,” Daley said.

With two members of the non-profit Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War so involved in the renovation of the church, the family asked the Camp 15 in Wind Lake to take over the church. “They asked if we were interested in taking over the church and with having done some must restoration already, we said we’d be happy to take ownership,” Daley said. Since last spring, Camp 15 has been busy fixing up the church, inside and out, and have installed new windows in the basement and will be painting the exterior. “It’s a slow process,” Daley said. “It’s all done with donations and we’ve had to do things like put new gutters on both the east and west eves of the church because there was some dampness in the basement. It seems to have been very helpful with that.” Daley said the group’s intent is to restore the old church, with a few updates, so it can be used for meetings, gatherings and possibly a wedding venue. “We want to bring it up to date, but preserve the church as best as possible,” he said. “We want the community know our goal is to preserve this as a part of our history.” Daley said it was important to the members of Camp 15 to let the community know they are committed to preserving the church and history for future generations. “This is an historic church and a landmark in the area since 1855,” Daley said. “We are honored to now be caretakers of the church and the community can be assured we’re not going to be changing the church, just updating it and maintaining it.” For more information contact Camp 15, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War: Dave Daley at 414-418-5112, Bob Koenecke at 262-539-3219 or Mike Wozny at 262-470-2846.

Area couple repurposes former Girl Scout camp

With the coronavirus putting a serious damper in summer activities across the nation and world, one area couple has a solution to the boredom – go camping! Simona and Jeremy Ebner opened Camp Kettlewood in East Troy a few weeks ago and are accepting reservations for the summer season. “It’s a very interesting time to open a business, that’s for sure,” Simona Ebner said. “We didn’t know what would happen, but being a private campground it’s probably one of the better places to be.” The Ebners purchased the former Oak Knoll Girl Scout Camp at W3524 Highway 20, East Troy, in June 2019 and have spent the last year fixing up the campgrounds and renovating the lodge. “It had some good bones,” Simona Ebner said. “We put in a kitchen and created some bedrooms and then in the fall we turned our attention to fixing up the campgrounds. Jeremy has spent a lot of time blazing a trail through the woods. It’s amazing how much time and money it takes to turn a campground into a campground. Who would have thought?” Simona said she and her husband decided to move out to the country from Milwaukee because they wanted more space and when they started looking at properties to buy, she heard about the Girl Scout camp from a coworker at Toppers Pizza in Whitewater. “I knew the property, I passed it often and thought, ‘This is interesting,’” she said. With her husband being “such an outdoorsman” Simona thought it would be a good fit. “He would love it and we could fix it up and share it with the community,” she said. “Sort of like flipping a house but way more interesting.” So, the couple, who are in their 30s, decided to take the plunge. “We don’t have kids, but this is such a family friendly, awesome place for exploring and learning about the wilderness we wanted to share that with other families,” Simona said.
Fixing it up One of the big issues for the Ebners was they needed to bring everything up to modern code to open. “The Girl Scouts had it in the ’60s and everything was grandfathered in for them,

She said that while her husband is a big fan of rustic camping, she is more of a “glamping” type of girl. “So, we met in the middle and decided to offer both types of camping,” Simona said. Part of the experience is the antique feel to the campgrounds, which took some doing, Simona said. “We were in the process of buying this for a while, so the summer before last I went to a lot of vintage flea markets and second-hand stores looking for stuff. I’ve been collecting things for a couple of years to get right feel. I really liked doing that,” she said. The Ebners started taking reservations for

the campsites on Memorial Day and spots were filling up fast. “We had 12 reservations the first week,” Simona said.
What’s on the grounds? Camp Kettlewood has four campsites in total – one rustic site and three “glamping” sites, Simona said. “We have two vintage trailers – a 1977 Airstream and a 1957 Holly camper. We decorated them and fixed them up. They’re all in working order. No air conditioning, but they both have fans and there’s a nice cross breeze.” Kettlewood also has a group campsite called “The Hilton.” “We kept all the original Girl Scout names for the sites as sort of a homage,” Simona said. “At The Hilton, we have platform tents with canvas overlays. We upgraded them, added electricity and mosquito netting all around them, stapled to the sides. “Those have extra plush mattresses with high thread count sheets and antique camping decorations.” The Hilton rents out starting at $195 a night. The group campsite sleeps eight with two queen-sized beds and four twin-sized beds. The other campsites are: • The Prairie, which is the rustic, pitch-atent campsite. Prices start at $35 a night; • Oak Knoll, which features the 1957 Holly camper. The camper has one double bed and one twin bed. Prices start at $75 a night; and • Mushroom Gulch, which is home to the 1977 Airstream camper and a view of the campsite’s ponds. The camper has one double bed and two twin beds and is priced starting at $100 a night.
COVID-19 concerns With opening the campgrounds in the middle of a pandemic, Simona said they changed some things to help keep everyone safe and to put the campers at ease. “Well, the campgrounds themselves are pretty isolated, so you’re not going to be meeting the other campers a lot, unless you want to,” Simona said. “And we’re encouraging everyone to bring single-use items like paper plates and plastic silverware for use while camping.” Simona said the campsites and trailers will be cleaned thoroughly after each renter(s) leaves. “The big thing we did was dedicate a bathroom to each campsite, so campers aren’t sharing facilities. That took some thought and planning, but it was a priority,” Simona said. “We have four campsites and four separate bathrooms, which will be labeled for each specific site and cleaned with approved cleaners after each checkout.” The campground is not open to the public, so campers know that only people with a reservation are on the site, she added. “And if you want to wear a face mask, it’s totally fine, but you probably won’t even encounter people,” Simona said. “The only gathering spot is really the bathrooms and we’ve strategized that.” Dogs are welcome, as well. “We allow dogs, per county rules,” Simona said. “That’s two per campsite – we can’t have a dog park out here.” Camp Kettlewood sits on 80 acres of old-growth forest, shaded nature trails and protected wetlands, according to the website. “No swimming holes, though,” Simona said. “We have some ponds, but you probably don’t want to swim in them.”

For the love of music Belfry Theatre opens season with new safety policies in place By Heather Ruenz

Despite continued uncertainty as the COVID-19 pandemic remains a concern, the folks at The Belfry Music Theatre decided to move forward with the season. But before doing so, they asked their patrons opinions and based the ultimate decision on those responses. “Our decisions regarding opening weekend were based upon the majority of the 866 patrons who responded to survey. We expended significant time and effort to listen to the desires of the patrons who have attended and supported the theatre,” Belfry staff stated on a Facebook post. As a result of the survey, the Belfry has implemented numerous safety procedures, which are subject to modification as the season progresses. Those procedures include: scanning attendees’ temperature prior to entry to the theatre building; no shaking hands; requiring patrons to sanitize their hands prior to entering (sanitizer will be provided); leaving the entry and interior doors open to avoid unnecessary touching of them; no congregating in the lobby before or after a performance; the shifting of seats within the same section to separate attendees. Some patrons commenting on Facebook posts about the procedures said they would not attend performances if required to wear a mask. “We did have multiple responses that if required to wear a face mask those parties would not attend. In our email we acknowledged that not all parties will agree with this requirement and some may choose not to attend. We completely respect your right to make that choice,” Belfry staff responded, adding that the mask policy will be reviewed each week as the season progresses. “We certainly look forward to being able to present live entertainment with no restrictions as in the past and seeing you again when you feel the time is right to reengage with The Belfry Music Theatre,” staff said. The theatre has added a live-streaming option to allow patrons who do not feel comfortable attending in person to experience the concerts at home. Other details worth noting in regards to the temporary procedures include that complimentary masks will be available, all restrooms will be completely sanitized prior to each performance with a CDC-approved disinfectant, there will be no intermission, at the end of the performance, volunteers will dismiss patrons by row to maintain social distancing, there will not be meet and greet events, and, refreshments, which will be sealed, will be served only after the show, outside the theatre.
BIGGEST SEASON YET
Belfry staff has set the bar high for 2020 with their largest scheduled season yet. This year’s lineup will be the largest number in a season to date and that isn’t including the Christmas season, which had not been released as of press time. In addition to bringing back all the crowd favorites, including last week’s opening act, American English (Beatles Tribute), along with Dean Z, Sir Franc D’Ambrosio, and many others in the lineup this year, the Belfry is also presenting 20

In addition to single concert the Belfry offers a trio of annual membership options: VIP+ for $499; VIP for $249; and Basic for $99. The basic option features advance ticket purchasing, seating upgrades and the waiving of ticket processing fees. All evening events at The Belfry begin at 7 p.m. with the venue opening at 6 p.m., and the doors at 6:30 p.m. Handicap parking is located in front of the theatre. General parking is at Mercy Hospital across the street from the theatre. Parking attendants assist guests in walking across Highway 67. Due to COVID-19, staff said The Belfry Music Theatre is expecting to face a significantly challenging year in 2020 along with all other parties involved in the live entertainment industry.
