Whitewater Train Depot Museum 301 W. Whitewater St.
The Whitewater Passenger Depot is home to the Whitewater Historical Society and has been serving as a local history museum since 1974. The depot is a local Whitewater Landmark and is listed in the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The main gallery features Whitewater’s history as told through artifacts dating all the way back to 1837. Artifacts are rotated in and out of exhibits, so no two visits are the same. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays during the city market, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Whitewater Effigy Mounds Preserve On the west side of town, there lies a preserve where 30 Native American huts once stood. These huts were constructed and standing between 200 AD and 1200 AD.
Prairie Tillers Mural On the corner of Center and Whitewater Street you’ll find our gorgeous Prairie Tillers Mural by artist Caryl Yasko. Caryl created the mural as a tribute to the Kettle Moraine in 1980. The mural showcases the courage and perseverance of Whitewater’s founders as well as our beautiful rolling hills and prairies held sacred by Native Americans. The figures on the right represent people from the tribal era, early settlers, and the people of today. The figures on the left represent the future and how what we do today influences what is to come.
Flowing Well Visitors come from miles around to quench their thirst at the refreshing artesian well located two miles south on Clover
Valley Road in the town of Whitewater. The water is free and has been flowing steadily since 1895.
Whitewater Historical Walking & Driving Tours To explore the history of Whitewater, pick up a detailed map of the town at the Chamber office. With these self-tour maps, you can revel in the Whitewater architecture of the late 1800s and transport yourself back in time. Take in the scenery as you travel the rustic roads in our area.
Rotary Skate Park Located at the Brewery Hill Park, the Rotary Skate Park offers a three ramp structure on a 62’ x 145’ concrete pad for skaters and bicyclists.

Summer 2019 to Spring 2021 The drawdown of Cravath and Trippe Lakes began on July 8, 2019. The drawdown continues throughout 2020. The dredging project is anticipated to begin the winter of 2020-21. Lakes remain drawn down throughout this time frame. Lakes to be refilled in the spring of 2021. The Southern unit of the state forest covers 21,000 acres stretching through southern Wisconsin. It attracts thousands of visitors to bike, hunt, camp, swim, hike, horseback ride, and much more. Explore all of the outdoor wonders that the Kettle Moraine State Forest has to offer. Bikers will enjoy the off-road bike trails in the heart of the Kettle Moraine. SENIORS IN THE PARK Seniors in the Park is a lively and dynamic program in Whitewater that seeks to promote a vital aging community. The group’s mission is to enhance and revitalize the lives of our community by providing programs that challenge your mind, enhance your physical well-being, create new connections, and are just plain fun. From presentations and trips to card games and movies, there is something offered for everyone. Activities take place at the Starin Park Community building, 504 W. Starin Road, unless stated otherwise, and many are free of charge.

Discover Whitewater – Whitewater Spirit Tour October is the perfect time for spooky, fun adventures! The City of Whitewater is known as “Second Salem” and is also famous for the “Witches of Whitewater” legends. The community has a history of spiritualism and a multitude of stories of witches, ghosts, alleged murders, and occult practices. From the cemeteries to the haunted houses, the Whitewater Spirit Tour features spiritrelated stories and unique access to explore haunted sites. The Spirit Tour tells the story of the Morris Pratt Institute, Mary Worth and the Winchester Family, serial killer Nellie Horan, and the Poison Widow. Attendees have unique, behind-the-scene access to visit Mary Worth’s crypt at Hillside Cemetery, explore beyond the chain-link fence at the Oak Grove Cemetery, and enter the water tower (aka “Witches’ Tower”) at Starin Park. Many of the haunted sites on the Spirit Tour have been investigated by paranormal groups. U.S. Paranormal Research not only shares their investigative findings of paranormal activities in Whitewater, but also brings their equipment along on the tour just in case there is spiritual activity to witness firsthand! The annual event is hosted by the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce and is made possible by our sponsors and volunteers 14

Engaging the The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the Community Engagement Center in the fall of 2019 as a resource for conferences, community events and public instruction. It is a collaborative space – designed to bring university personnel, local organizations and businesses together for mutually beneficial endeavors – that also serves as a gallery for displaying local art. Located directly adjacent to the

Fairfield Inn and just blocks from the UW-Whitewater campus, the CEC is an ideal venue for multi-day workshops and seminars. Irvin L. Young Auditorium Big City Entertainment in a Small Town
Ever wished you didn’t have to drive an hour or two to experience big city entertainment? You don’t have to with the Irvin L. Young Auditorium right in the heart of our city. Located on the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater campus on the corner of Prince and Main, you can attend anything from a family movie sing-along to a touring Broadway performance without worrying about a long drive or parking fees. Spearheaded by Theatre Professor, Lorraine Gross, this state-of-theart performing arts center opened in 1993 under her direction. Also instrumental in the building of the theater were Fern and Irvin Young who both supported the arts and humanities. This love and support for arts and humanities continues to this day. If you’ve never been to a show at Young Auditorium, you’re missing out on something truly special. While Whitewater is a small town, this venue offers a big city experience featuring shows that touch all generations through a wide variety of educational and culturally diverse performances. Some of Young Auditorium’s major goals when it comes to programming performances are education, outreach, and a family focus. The Horizon Matinee Series brings in teachers and their students for performances and the Arts 4 All program opens up performances to teachers who work with a population of disadvantaged and at-risk students by allowing them to apply for reduced ticket prices. The Never Too Young Series, held in their smaller event space, the Kachel Center, is for families and offers shows by regional performers who interact with the audience with tickets priced at $5 or less. Along with educational, outreach, and family programming, Young Auditorium
provides a handful of catered dinners before performances for those seeking a date night experience, and they particularly enjoy pairing up with local restaurants and vendors to create community collaboration. “Young Auditorium’s vision,” says Director Shannon Dozoryst, “is that we serve as a catalyst for inspiration. We want to be sure that people are leaving our space with more than they came to us with so that they’re being transformed in some very small way.” If you love a good show or performance, book tickets for all you wish to see at the beginning of each school year. Then, arrive early to peruse the large collection of African art, donated by original founders, Fern and Irvin Young, in the lobby. On a day you aren’t seeing a show, call and ask about renting out one of the many spaces (including the main theater!) for your next event/performance or maybe catch a tour of the Young Auditorium and all of its facilities with Michael Morrissey to learn even more history of this influential performing arts center.

Welcome to the
Community Space
In January 2019 a new venture opened in Whitewater: The Community Space, or TCS, is a community reuse and sharing center where people can donate or pick up clothing, furniture, housewares and other items for free. TCS location also offers a food pantry and a Little Free Pantry, the latter offering access to food 24/7. The space is open to everyone, regardless of what city they live in or their income. Located on the east side of town, TCS is open four days a week, including evening and weekend hours, and staffed entirely by volunteers. In February alone, TCS received more than 2,000 visits and gave out more than 4,500 articles of clothing and 10,656 pounds of food. Onsite manager Kay Robers oversees volunteers who contribute more than 1,200
hours every month to sort items, making them available for community reuse and keeping them out of the landfill. The entity, which is applying for nonprofit status, is entirely funded through donations. In addition to sharing things, TCS shares its space with the community. Other individuals or nonprofit entities can use the location free of charge as long as their programming is free as well. For example, the Whitewater Area League of Women Voters has held regular meetings in the space, and Seniors in the Park has offered a presentation on how to support Whitewater as a dementia-friendly community. Historical Whitewater A CITY RICH IN HISTORY
Whitewater was established by the Potawatomi who settled here at the convergence of two rivers, a land rich in resources and potential. Earlier Native Americans, the great mound builders of the late Woodland Period, created the burial ground that is now the Whitewater Effigy Mound Preserve at 288 S. Indian Mound Parkway. A city is born Due to the outcome of the 1832 Black Hawk War, the Native Americans in the area were displaced west of the Mississippi River. In the year 1837, Whitewater was flooded with colonists looking for plots of land. The city steadily grew until 1852 when the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroads chose Whitewater as a stop between Milwaukee and Prairie Du Chien. This caused an explosion of people flooding the streets, bringing commerce and goods right into the city. a

Not only did it bring people, it allowed Whitewater’s industries to sell to outside markets causing them to grow and in return hire more workers. The year 1881 Whitewater was growing exponentially in the years prior to 1881, but by the time the year began, a series of snowstorms had devastated the community, leaving the city in a state of peril. Horses and wagons couldn’t get down the street and factories couldn’t open their doors to their workers. One of the largest snowstorms during this time lasted more than 40 hours! In the end, the snow wasn’t the worst of it. Because of the high amount of snow that accumulated during winter, when spring came around, the water flooded the area causing even more havoc and damage. If giant snow banks and Main Street rivers weren’t enough, a number of fires leveled multiple blocks of the downtown area. After building new dams, bridges and infrastructure, Whitewater rebounded and in the process, learned a lesson or two. Visit the Discover Whitewater office at 150 W.
