estern Kenosha County is home to nearly 40,000 residents and has something to offer in every community, regardless of season, courtesy of several attractions and events. For the outdoor enthusiast, the area features Richard Bong State Recreation Area in the Town of Brighton, two Kenosha County Parks, along with Wilmot Mountain. The two Kenosha County Parks, Silver Lake and Fox River parks, collectively offers a disc golf course, multiple hiking trails and a beach where people can enjoy a warm summer day. In the winter, a recently revamped Wilmot Mountain not only offers people a ski hill, it also has unveiled multiple events to keep people coming back to the resort. As for events, each community boasts offerings to suit anybody’s needs, like in the fall when Old Settlers Oktoberfest is held in the Village of Paddock Lake. Around the same time, the Village of Salem Lakes welcomes residents from any community to join the fun during its annual PumpkinDaze extravaganza. In the Village of Twin Lakes, where the nationally known Aquanut Water Ski Show team performs shows during the summer, the Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association, Inc. brings a diverse range of events. These events include the annual Libertyfest celebration, held the weekend before Independence, and includes of a parade, float contest, and activities to keep children entertained. Additionally, the Chamber has ushered in new events, like last year’s inaugural Oktoberfest at Twin Lakes Country Club. The Chamber, along with another organization, also presented TL Cornfest for the first time in 2018. Organizers said the second annual event is going to be bigger than the first. While residents and visitors check out area attractions and events, Western Kenosha County features two high schools, Westosha Central and Wilmot.
Last year, the two schools garnered milestones, which brought the community together. Some of the qualities are highlighted in this annual Our Town edition, produced by the Report Group, which spent time poring through hundreds of items within the last year. This annual edition is packed with vital community information. Looking ahead, the Report will continue to make a concerted effort to highlight community events, residents and give welldeserved recognition to students. with a lot of participants that come every year,” she said. “They look forward to seeing each other.” Syed Shiraz Ali credits volunteers like the Richeys for coaxing his son into a wide
smile. “All of the support he got from everyone was very very awesome. This community has done extremely well in helping all of the children,” he said.

For nearly two decades, the by Jason Arndt Aquanut Water Ski Show team has helped thousands of special EDITOR needs children reach their dreams, which is a journey on Lake Mary in Twin Lakes. The journey continued last July when the Aquanuts welcomed back Extreme Recess, a Chicago-based program with 60 children participating, including Syed Abid Ali. Syed Abid Ali, 9, on a sit-ski, widely grinned as the water splashed around him. “He had a fantastic time, I could tell by his facial expression that he loved it,” said his father, Syed Shiraz Ali. “The feeling is indescribable. It is a really good time for him.” The indescribable feeling, according to founder Tom Tuohy of Dreams for Kids, was made possible through hundreds of volunteers with many coming from the Aquanuts. “We have about 100 parents and about 70 volunteers,” he said. “The Aquanuts are the organization that makes this happen for us. It means the world to us.” Aquanuts member Susan Richey, who is an occupational therapist, said the Adaptive Water Ski program looks to promote inclusiveness and help children experience a new freedom. Annually, Richey sees about 20-25 other trained Aquanut members join in on the inclusive activity, which includes a cookout, bounce house and other features on Thursday. “It is amazing, it is the happiest and most rewarding thing that I do,” she said. “We are all volunteers and we love to be with these people and we love to help them have a great time and get out there.” Richey’s daughter, Anna, is one of the Aquanuts volunteers. During Thursday’s program, the younger Richey spotted the children, riding beside them on a jet ski on Lake Mary. “I like to put her out as a jumper because she is also a certified lifeguard, she is our person if something should happen,” Susan said. Along the way, Susan has seen her daughter form friendships with the participants. “It is really sweet, she has made friends

When Twin Lakes resident Denise Myers first put on a pair of ice skates as a youngster living in Oak Creek, she fell in love with the beauty of figure skating, a sport she has coached for more than 37 years. Throughout her coaching career, she guided several figure skaters to national and international competitions, but never went to the Olympics until one of her students had a meteoric rise in less than a year. The student, Bradie Tennell, 20, of Carpentersville, Ill., was considered a long shot by national observers to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team until early January when she won the U.S. Figure Skating Championship. The following day, Tennell was named to the Olympic team, and made the trek to
Pyeongchang, South Korea, alongside Myers in February. Myers, who has coached Tennell for more than 10 years at Twin Rinks Ice Pavilion in Buffalo Grove, Ill., said the trek to South Korea was worth it. “Because I have coached Bradie for over 10 years, it was an amazing experience for the both us,” said Myers. “I’m glad we could share this journey together.”

Myers recalled the first time she met Tennell, whose spirit showed at the age of 9 and had her often asking questions and seeking ways to improve her routine. “When I did my first

“It feels wonderful, it was a great event, I have so many volunteers. It feels great that people are recognizing all of their hard work.” Additionally, she said Mindy Cooling of State Farm Insurance in Paddock Lake, along with the spirit of the event’s founder Heidi Schuerstedt also played a role in the event’s success. Schuerstedt, who passed away, developed the Oktoberfest vision about a decade ago. “I wish she was here to see this, because people are realizing that this is a Schuerstedt, the former owner of Heidi’s Bakery, originally planned to hold an event on her property before village officials and local businesses stepped forward to enlarge her vision. Since then, Old Settlers Oktoberfest received nonprofit status after the 2014 event and started raising funds for the band shelter. In addition to Schuerstedt’s vision, Lancour said the people have made planning and coordinating the event a worthwhile effort. “It is just about the people every year, the dancers, the bands, it is just the people,” she said. “It is all about the people.” Brew Haus Polka Kings, Ed Wagner Brass Band and the Alphorn Players were the event’s featured musicians in 2018.

Every September, Old Settlers Park in Paddock Lake booms with Bavarianinspired culture. The event, which finished its eighth years in 2018, draws in people who are decked out in lederhosen, with some dancing to polka tunes. It also features a stein-hoisting competition, dachshund dash, German food offered by local businesses, a car show and much more. The event serves as a fundraiser to finance a bandshell at the Kenosha County Park. Old Settlers Oktoberfest, also a nonprofit organization since 2014, coordinated the event. According to organizer Rebecca Lancour, owner of Westosha Floral, she said the 2018 event marked the biggest boom in its eight year run. Wilmot decathletes win another title
victory as a team,” Wilmot coach Don Serkowski said after the competition. Annually, teams focus their studies on a specific theme, which was Africa in 2018. Overall, the team collected 21 medals and won six of 10 categories, which tied the school record. The winning categories were literature, economics, social science, science, music and art. Other competitive categories are essay, interview, speech and math. While the decathletes won six of 10 categories, they also captured the Super Quiz relay. Marcus Wolff, in the honors division, answered all five Super Quiz questions with success to earn a gold medal and tallied the fifth highest overall score in the state. Additionally, Wolff earned a gold medal on the art test for best score and place third in Literature, where he notched a bronze medal. Levi Keen, another honors division competitor, garnered a bronze medal in music and social science to finish second on the team and 14th among 172 total state competitors. Meanwhile, varsity division competitor Emily Heckel took home several pieces of hardware, including gold medals in three categories. Of her three gold medals, Heckel saw her largest

Heckel, whose other gold medals were in social science and science, also had a bronze medal in both art and music. Rounding out the varsity competitors were Tanis Rossow and Ambriel Siggeman. Rossowwas fourth overall, picking up a gold medal in each of three categories: music, literature and science. She garnered silver medals in social science and art. Siggeman, meanwhile, had an individual bronze medal in economics. In the scholastic division, Austin Adam earned a silver medal in music along with a bronze medal in both literature and essay. Kylie Henderson took a silver medal in science and Zach O’Brien achieved his best score in literature.

Falcon Awesome: Central has spirited year by Jason In 2018, the Westosha Arndt Central High School community showed why EDITOR it was “Falcon Awesome,” courtesy of a spirited cheerleading team and a historic boys basketball team. The Falcons cheerleading team, a perennial state powerhouse, won its fourth consecutive Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Poms Coaches title and Southern Lakes Conference championship. The two titles, however, were not the only accomplishments the team had last year. Natalia Vernezze also garnered WACPC Coach of the Year accolades. Vernezze said she felt privileged to receive the honor. “Winning Coach of the Year was a fantastic feeling,” she said. “It was a nice gesture for the parents to nominate me, but then to have WACPC select me based on the letters really made me feel special.” For Vernezze, who also won as a student attending Westosha Central, capturing the fourth straight state title took time and commitment from the entire team. The commitment starts in May, when open gyms are held, followed by tryouts in June to prepare for cheer camp. After cheer camp, the team heads into the football season, where they practice four times a week for 2 1/2 hours. “Each day we practice, we are constantly upping skills and holding each other accountable for growth,” she said. “I take the time to create goals, both individually, and as a team.” Meanwhile, in boys basketball, the Falcons earned their first WIAA Division 2

state championship series berth in school history after defeating top-seeded Monona Grove in the sectional final. Westosha Central, which also had Jaeden Zackery named as an all-state honoree, additionally recorded the most wins in history with 22. The Falcons phenomenal run, according to Athletic Director Jonathan Lindh, developed a different atmosphere.
“(In 2017), we advanced to the sectional final and the whole atmosphere around the program and school really start to ramp up,” he said. The atmosphere created a buzz in the community, he added. “It truly is a community event. The band is big and loud, the cheer team is amazing and we have dance team performances at halftime.”

Boasting Bristol’s best Annually, the Village of Bristol celebrates with Bristol Progress Days, which features activities for people of any age. The three-day event offers sports tournaments, carnival and children activities, live music, historical reflections and a parade that allows patrons to come home with candy. Bristol Progress Days also recognizes the village’s best by presenting outstanding citizen awards and crowns a new Miss Bristol. Along with a 5K run, Bristol Progress Days has a fireworks show at dusk on the final day, which is Sunday. This year’s event themed “Golden 50th Anniversary” will be held July 12-14 with most activities at Hansen Park on Highway 45. Brystal Schultz, awarded the title of 2018 Miss Bristol, receives a sash from her predecessor Shania Dumelle at a banquet held last July at the Parkway Chateau. Championships in Milan, Italy, in March. “We have already worked on some new ideas for the upcoming season, and I know there is much more potential in Bradie to reach even higher levels,” said Myers, who looks to join her in the 2022 Olympic games in Beijing, China. Myers credits Tennell’s drive to her upbringing and strong support system. Tennell, who attends McHenry County College, is the daughter of Jean and sister to two brothers, Austin and Shane, both hockey players. “Bradie loves to read and is a wonderful role model to the skaters at the Twin Rinks,” Myers said.
trial lesson with Bradie, I knew she had the spirit and could see she loved skating,” Myers said. “Bradie liked being challenged, and enjoyed the process of becoming a better athlete.” The process, however, was arduous after Tennell suffered back injuries, which sidelined her for several months starting in 2015, according to the Chicago Tribune. Despite the setback, Tennell continued to persevere, and eventually returned to the rink. “Any athlete at this level has to have fire that burns within,” Myers said. “You need the self-discipline. Bradie has both characteristics.” The self-discipline parlayed into a rapid progression. Within just 11 months she made the leap from junior world level competition to the Olympic stage in South Korea, where she exhibited poise in a highpressure climate.

Before Myers moved to Twin Lakes, she and her husband lived in Winthrop Harbor, Ill., for 18 years, but wanted to return to Wisconsin after their four children left the nest. “It was the right move for us to come back home to Wisconsin,” said Myers, who met her husband at the Kenosha Ice Arena more than 33 years ago. That brought them to Twin Lakes, where they have found peace and serenity, in the view of lakes Mary and Elizabeth. “We love the area. It puts us halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago,” she said. “We have room for a garden, and this area brings us so much joy and peace.”

Chamber has an abundance of festivities
In the Village of Twin Lakes, where the Aquanuts perform twice weekly water ski shows during the summer, the Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association, Inc. presents many opportunities for fun throughout the year. The opportunities begin May 27, when the area honors military members with the Memorial Day parade, followed by the annual Libertyfest celebration the weekend before Independence Day. Libertyfest, held the weekend of June 29, brings in thousands of visitors annually and features a parade, live music, children’s activities and an Aquanuts water ski show. Children’s activities vary on an
annual basis, but last year, Libertyfest organizers brought in a bungee jump exhibit along with Sea Hamster balls. While the community comes together, area vendors set up shop, offering an assortment of savory foods for those in attendance. Those features are not all, however, with Libertyfest capping off its festivities with one of the area’s first fireworks shows following the ski show along Lake Mary at Lance Park. The fun continues, meanwhile, with the Chamber offering assistance to the second annual TL Cornfest and Water Sports Competition at Lance Park held Aug. 16-17. For car enthusiasts, a week later, the Chamber presents Business in the Park

The tree lighting ceremony helps kickoff Trees on Parade and Holiday Shopping held that weekend at St. John’s Community Center.
