County singer and songwriter Hunter Hayes will headline at the Walworth County Fair on Saturday, Sept. 1. Hayes has sold more than 1.1 million copies of his 2011 self-titled debut album with its single “Wanted” making him the youngest male act to ever top the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His second album, Storyline, was released in 2014 preceding I Want Crazy and The 21 Project in 2015. Hayes’ commercial success and songwriting talent has led him to be called the Leader of Country Music’s Youth Revolution earning him five Grammy Awards nominations and a win at the 2012 CMA Awards for New Artist of the Year. Hayes latest single, “Dear God,” was released Aug. 3 and made “Rolling Stone’s” 10 Best County and American Song of the Week by Aug. 10. Newsboys United

Christian rock band the Newsboys is bringing its Newsboys United tour to the fair on Sunday, Sept. 2. The group takes the stage at the Grandstand at 7:30 p.m. to entertain the crowd with their contemporary Christian hits such as “We Believe,” “God’s Not

Dead” and “Shine.” Founded in 1985, in Australia, by Peter Furler and George Perdikis, the Newsboys have release 17 studio albums, six of which have been certified gold. The band consists of lead vocalist Michael Tait, keyboardist and bassist, Jeff Frankenstein, drummer Duncan Phillips and guitarist Jody Davis. “We’ve been so encouraged and humbled at the response from Newsboys fans, not just in the cities we’ve visited but from people all over the world,” Newsboys’ Frankenstein states on the group’s website. “This is so much more than just a tour, it’s a celebration of different eras, individuals and the songs that have brought us together.” General admission and reserve Grandstand tickets are $10. Things to do for kids of all ages

The fair offers up fun in a variety of sizes While county fairs are generally family friendly, the Walworth County Fair goes above and beyond when it comes to welcoming kids of all ages. Along with the fair’s focus on county agriculture and the contests, meat sales and all that goes with it, the fair features a variety of events designed to entertain. From activities designed specifically to keep the little ones busy, to concerts, demo derbies, races, rides and more, the fair has something for everyone. The wholesome fun is enhanced by the fact that the Walworth County Fair is a “dry” festival with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. One of the new acts this year is geared straight toward families with preschoolers. Sesame Street Live will present “C is for Celebration” at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Grandstand. General admission and reserved Grandstand tickets are $10; reserved track seating is $20. Kiddieland The Walworth County Fair’s Kiddieland is where the little ones and their families can find pint-sized offerings to delight and entertain. The children’s area of the fairgrounds has the Butterfly Barn, kiddie carnival, Barnyard Adventure Tent and food. Performers entertain nonstop with acts the entire run of the fair and the Learning Coop Tent hosts demonstrations and bingo throughout the fair’s run. The Walworth County Fair also offers a free, sanctioned Pedal Tractor Pull for kids. If they were to win, they qualify to go on to state and then nationals. On the tracks Some of the new attractions this year are the pig races in the Machinery Lot, flat track racing at the Grandstand, the Red Piano Bar in front of the North Hall and X-Metal BMX Riders daily in Kiddieland. The Flat Track Racing will happen at the Grandstand at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29. The Elkhorn Nationals are presented

Metro Milwaukee, Royal Enfield of Metro Milwaukee and Royal Enfield. Also at the Grandstand this year are the Badger State Pulls at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30. Cost is $5. The Walworth County Fair is also bringing back the Monster Trucks from All Star Motorsports Productions. The trucks will be at the Grandstand at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. Cost is $5. As in year’s past, the Grandstand entertainment wraps up on Labor Day with the Demo Derby at 1:40 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Barnyard Adventure The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm. Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden. The fair’s Barnyard Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country. The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the Pony Rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair. Butterfly Barn Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod. The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies. Around May, the Walworth County Fair will receive a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. A glimpse back in time

Log cabins and their docents preserve history and bygone ways of life By Bridget Bartal STAFF WRITER

oth the Walworth County Fairgrounds and Burlington Historical Society continually preserve two log cabins from the 19th and 20th centuries. Docents and demonstrators play a crucial part in keeping the spirit of these historical buildings alive. Walworth County Fair’s Log Cabin and Burlington’s Pioneer Log Cabin in Wehmhoff Square exhibit their pieces of history in differing ways. The Walworth County Association for Home & Community Education will host the demonstrations at the annual Walworth County Fair. Demonstrations take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Aug. 29, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Aug. 30 through Sept. 2 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 3. Demonstrators will display their trades and specialties. The demonstrators and their areas of expertise change from year to year. The cabin was built on the fairgrounds in 1936. Burlington’s Pioneer Log Cabin is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays from mid-May through mid-October, as well as by appointment. Docents memorize facts about the history of the cabin and highlight the lifestyle of people living in the 1850s. Historians estimate the cabin was built in 1850.

A docent at Burlington’s cabin, Helen Lena, described herself as a history buff who belongs to three historical societies. “My dad raised me on stories and I developed a love of history. I was asked to be a docent, and I couldn’t say no,” Lena said. Lena has been a docent for about five years. Though she is a retired teacher, she continues to substitute teach when she can. As a docent, she dresses in period-accurate clothing during her tours and said the historycomes-to-life approach was important. “It gets the kids really interested in history. And it’s fun,” she said. Meanwhile, demonstrators show off their trades at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. This summer, they cover a wide range of interests, from custom-built farm toys to hand chair caning. One demonstrator, a rose gardener in Delavan, stirs the emotion of many visitors to his property. “My wife got cancer and she passed away back in 2005,” said Doug Amon, homeowner of the Stop ‘n Smell The Roses at N5088 Highway O. “When she passed away, I sold my business. She had a little garden out there, and I thought I’d plant some roses for her. It started out as 25 bushes.” Twenty-five roses soon turned to 50, and the garden continued to expand and grow.

Enjoy some favorite fair foods

State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun. If it can be served on a stick or deepfried, chances are you can find it at a fair. Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals. • Funnel cake – Funnel cake and its close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others. • Corn dogs – Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds. • French fries – French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks. • Cotton candy – What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor? Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquefied enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike. • Pie – Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts. • Corn on the cob – Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Smart ways to keep kids safe in crowded areas Amusement parks, beaches, tourist attractions, concerts, and local fairs attract families each year. Such outings can be exciting and enjoyable excursions, but panic sets in immediately when parents lose track of their children. It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety. Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.

Take an up-to-date photo

Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children. In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities.

Dress in bright colors

Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help

make children more noticeable. Brightcolored clothing on Mom and Dad can also help kids keep an eye on the grownups.

Write it down

Write down parental contact information. Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen. Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.

Have an emergency plan

Families should come up with a plan for reuniting if they get separated. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children. Families also can choose a meet-up location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind.

Teach kids who to trust

Identify people children can look to for help. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents.

Assign an adult to each child

It’s easy for one parent to think the other parent is watching. In a family of four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe.

Use a child safety harness

Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers. This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off. Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Being prepared and acting calmly can help parents quickly find their lost children. The Walworth County Fair hosts a vast array of vendors during its six-day run. From food to farm equipment to merchandise, the fair offers information and products from many independent sources.

Future of agriculture grows at fairs The importance of agriculture is abundant – from the food we eat, the major industries it supports and the benefits it provides to our environment. But looking ahead, in order for agriculture to continue to advance, it’s essential to educate and inspire young minds, invest in the next generation and turn today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders. That’s where youth agriculture organizations come in. According to Christi Korzekwa, senior vice president of marketing at Tractor Supply Company, the nation’s largest rural lifestyle retailer, the future of farming is in the hands of these young leaders. “Organizations like the 4-H and FFA play an integral role in educating youth and fostering the importance that agriculture plays within our society,” said Korzekwa. “It’s important to inspire these young members while providing opportunities to showcase their achievements and form strong relationships within their communities.” Across the country, state and county fairs have a long tradition of doing just that – bringing people together, promoting community and connecting all ages.

Members of youth agricultural organizations are familiar faces at these events. For them, state and county fairs are more than just an experience - they serve as a platform. Through fair experiences and involvement in youth agricultural programs, 4-H and FFA students are growing into the agriculture leaders of tomorrow through:

The importance of good sportsmanship can never be overstated. Similarly, neither can the importance of healthy competition. Competing in fairs helps drive individuals to work toward a tangible goal, grow confidence and get inspired by what they are doing and what their peers are doing. To honor these young students’ achievements and foster community connection, Tractor Supply has begun its fourth annual “Follow Us to the Fair” Tour, an interactive experience that travels to state and county fairs across the country. Happening now through Nov. 10, the tour will hit 24 fairs across the country to connect with local communities and celebrate the role 4-H and FFA youth play in making their communities better places. Last year, Tractor Supply recognized 95 hardworking 4-H and FFA members during special ceremonies along the tour for their exceptional community contributions through its “Great Neighbor” Essay Contest. The essay

contest is back for its second year to continue giving well-deserved recognition to 4-H and FFA youth. Tractor Supply will celebrate more than 100 award recipients from this year’s contest along the tour. Winners were selected from hundreds of applicants who were encouraged to submit a short essay detailing a specific 4-H or FFA experience and how it has influenced their development as a great neighbor in their community. Outstanding Senior Citizen nominees

Each year the Walworth County Fair requests nominees for the Outstanding Senior Citizen competition. According to fair officials, and Outstanding Senior Citizen is someone who provides inspiration, endless amounts of love and care, encouragement and wisdom to those in our community through years of commitment and service. This years nominees are:

Jean Baker Jean Baker, 84, of Delavan, was a farmer prior to retirement. She has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for the past 30 years. She also helps out with the trolleys and wheelchair rentals during the fair to help raise funds for the Food in a Backpack Program at Turtle Creek School to prevent hunger for families on weekends. She has been heavily involved at the First Baptist Church in Delavan having served as the president of the Women’s Group, mission chairperson and as a member of the church board. Friends said Jean is an outstanding volunteer who has committed to serving her community with her leadership abilities, cooking skills, time and resources, and even with just her smile and kind words. Patricia Benson Patricia Benson, 71, of Delavan, was employed as a schoolteacher prior to retirement. Now she is committed to advocating for both humans as well as

animals in Walworth County. She dedicates her time to volunteering at Willow Field Nursing Home by assisting the activity coordinator and helping the Lakeland Animal Shelter through financial support and by taking in animals whenever she can. Friends said Patricia is incredibly servanthearted, generous and caring ensuring that the most vulnerable and forgotten know they are loved and have their needs met. Jerry Gibbons Jerry Gibbons, 69, of Sharon, is the commander of the Sharon American Legion Post 130 as well as the county commander

for 10 posts. He also has been instrumental in getting over ninety names added to his downtown Veterans Memorial and is also in charge of Parade of Flags for the town Memorial Day ceremony. Gibbons is a member of the Sharon Lions Club while also being the district governor of 51 other Lions Clubs. He was also a key player in providing vision screening to all the children at the Sharon Community School. Bob Kunkel Bob Kunkel, 75, of Fontana since 2003, where he lives with his wife of 37 years. Together, they have two children and three

grandchildren. Kunkel was a Parks and Recreation administrator from 1965 to 1997 and assistant director at the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association. He is a founding member and volunteer for Side by Side, Inc. while also having served on the board of directors. He served as the president, program chairman and secretary of the Rotary Club International. Kunkel is heavily involved at the Lake Geneva United Methodist Church. He served as the chairman of the finance committee and church council and was a member of the board of trustees.

“Now there are over 400 rose bushes,” Amon said. “Some of the neighbors started to stop in and see what was going on, and that’s how it all got going. Later, I put up a gazebo and a little pond with a waterfall. Over a thousand people come through each summer.” Another docent, Larry Yanke, specializes in hand chair caning. “It’s a six-layer weaving process,” Yanke said. “You come out with a hexagonal pattern, and the seventh layer goes around the top to cover the holes. The trade goes back about 2,000 years. The ancient Egyptians did it.” Yanke, who has caned chairs for about 10 years, currently is working with several customers who are intrigued by this archaic trade.

“It costs $80 to $90 per chair. I’m busy; I have five or six chairs to make right now,” Yanke said. After retiring, chair caning became his hobby. “I learned from a gentleman from Delavan who has been chair caning for more than 30 years,” Yanke said. Another custom builder, Richard Morgan, crafts farm toys. “I have been doing this for 25 years,” Morgan said. “At the fair, I’m going to have probably three different displays of mine. I have about nine different large scale displays that I show.” Morgan, who shows his custom- and scratch-built farm toys at many toy shows, is a regular at the Walworth County Fair’s Log Cabin.

“This will be the third year that I’ve displayed at the fairgrounds. I have a couple favorite displays that I do all the time – these are the ones that people ask for. One is my farm scene and the other is my truck display,” Morgan said. For other demonstrators, this is their first year demonstrating at the log cabin. One married couple, Christy and Dennis Pace, have a love for livestock. But it’s not just any livestock – they specifically raise Suri alpacas on their Beloit farm, Pacesetter Alpacas. “This is our 23rd year raising them,” Christy Pace said. “They’re a fiber animal, like sheep. We sheer them once a year and have their fiber processed. We also promote the animal. We would love to see more people get interested in raising them.”

The Paces are bringing their product to the Walworth County Fair this year, which includes rugs, socks, sweaters and yarn. The alpacas won’t be making an appearance at the Log Cabin. “We’re just going to bring the product. There are other demonstrators in the cabin, and there’s not enough room to set up a pen for the alpacas,” Christy Pace said.
