COUNTY FAIR
Fair is the largest in the state The 169th Annual by Tracy Walworth County Fair returns Ouellette to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn EDITOR on Aug. 29 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 3. The festival has the distinction of being the largest county fair in the state. The fair is also a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. “(We have) over 15,000 entries in the fair competitions, everything from quilts to cows,” Walworth County Fair General Manager Larry Gaffey said. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. The six-day county fair showcases agriculture in the county with an emphasis on the youth, often area 4-H member, who raise and show animals and compete in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, on the Park Stage.

the Aug. 29 Flat Track Motorcycling Racine and the BMX Stunt Show, Gaffey said. Also new this year are the Moo-gician show on the Kiddieland stage, Swifty Swine Racing and Swimming Pigs in the Machinery Lot, and the Red Piano Bar near the North Hall. Pies take center stage with the addition of the Pies in the Park recipe challenge and pie auction.

The family friendly festival offers boatloads of fun for free on the fairgrounds. Kids of all ages can enjoy live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s
Kid Show, Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure, which is free to visit, is a great place for kids to learn about agriculture. Children can grab a basket to explore different ag stations in the Seeds of Supper Tour, earning “Barnyard Bucks” to spend in the Barnyard Adventure General Store. A visit to the Butterfly Barn is also a family favorite activity at the fair.
Special attractions
“C is for Celebration” when Sesame Street Live appears on the Grandstand at 3 p.m. on Sept. 1. Kids can sing and dance along with Elmo, Cookie Monster and Rosita during the interactive performance. This event does have a charge with tickets $10 to $20 depending on the seating. Headlining at the fair this year are country star Hunter Hayes on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. Musical acts scheduled to perform at the Park Stage during the fair’s run include the Fair Idol competition, Todd Green Jazz Trio, Jack Farina Big Band, Steve Meisner Polka Band, KR Bluegrass, Gary McAdams Band, The Britins, The Concrete Roots Reggae Band and more. Honorary marshals for 2018 Walworth County Fair As in years past, the role of honorary marshal for the Walworth County Fair has been given to longtime supporters of the fair and agriculture in the county. This year Elton Feffer and Bill Marquart were selected for the honor.
Bill Marquart
Bill Marquart has been involved with the Walworth County Fair for the past 50 years. He began showing steers through 4-H Club and FFA in 1967. Then, starting in the 1980s he and his wife Doreen became leaders of the Richmond 4-H Club taking the club membership from two to more than one hundred over their 20 years of leading the club. He then took on even more responsibility when he became the superintendent of the Poultry Project, a position he held for 24 years. For Bill, it has been and always will be all about the children who show during the Fair. Some of the kids even refer to Bill as their poultry dad. He always tried to make it a great experience because he always wanted the exhibitors to come back and show again the following year. But he credits his wife as the reason for it all stating, “I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without her.” The fair is a major part of Bill’s year. “Six days out of the year if your sentence does not include fair, it doesn’t matter,” he said. For Bill the rest of world stops at fair time, his wife noted that you just can’t get him out of the poultry barn. He went on to
state that his favorite part of the Fair is just the friendship and the comradery that come out of exhibiting at the fair, the families all look out for each other. “You always know that someone is going to help you or contribute because everyone pitches in here,” Bill said.
Elton Feffer
 Elton Feffer became involved with the Walworth County Fair back in the 1990s when he became a member of the poultry committee, a position he held for the next 20 years. At the same time, he also became chair of the Fur and Feather Sale held annually on the last day of the Fair. Elton’s major contribution was to the Poultry Project, by hatching chickens and turkeys for many of the exhibitors in the project. If anyone needed help in the project he was always there to help. Elton was a huge supporter of the 4-H Club and FFA exhibitors in both the Fur and Feather Sale as well as the Meat Animal Sale through his and Richard Alter’s company Continental Plastic, a manufacturer and worldwide supplier of products for veterinary practices and artificial insemination of domestic livestock. The love and support of the fair has continued through Elton’s family as both his children and their children have become exhibitors at the Walworth County Fair. According to his friends and family, Elton is known for always showing up, setting up and cleaning up and never asking anything in return.

Who’s the Fairest of them all? FOUR VIE FOR ROYAL TITLE AT 169TH WALWORTH COUNTY FAIR This year, four young women from the county are seeking the Walworth County Fairest of the Fair crown – Lillie Caufmann, Hannah Earle, Katelyn Gonzales and Jessica Nehs. Lillie Cauffman Lillie Cauffman, 17, is a junior at Elkhorn Area High School. She hopes to attend a four-year university in order to gain a bachelor’s degree in nursing with an emphasis in neonatal care, eventually becoming a nurse practitioner. She is an active member in Sugar Creek 4-H Club earning several leadership awards while also showing at the Walworth County Fair. Cauffman said her favorite part of the fair is seeing all of the fairgoers enjoying their last summer smile. Hannah Earle Hannah Earle, 22, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago this year and is a 2014 graduate of Elkhorn Area High School. She plans on fulfilling her dream of becoming an art teacher and selling her own artwork in the future. Earle has been a part of the Walworth
County Fair for many years as an exhibitor as a member of Sugar Creek 4-H Club. Katelyn Gonzalez Katelyn Gonzalez, 20, is majoring in mathematics at the University of WisconsinLa Crosse and graduated from DelavanDarien High School in 2016. She hopes to teach high school math and eventually earn a master’s degree. Gonzalez has been heavily involved with the Walworth County Fair through the Swine Project stating she, “enjoyed watching the young members learning and growing as a show person,” during her years in the project.

Jessica Nehs Jessica Nehs, 22, is a student at the University of Wisconsin- Platteville, majoring agricultural technology education. She graduated from Elkhorn Area High School in 2014. She hopes to one day teach agricultural education to high school students while advising a local FFA chapter. At the Walworth County Fair she is heavily involved with the Horse and Pony Project as the Youth Committee president and a driving adult leader.
