Montini Catholic’s National Honor Society (Pope Paul VI Chapter) proudly inducted 69 new student members on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at a special NHS Induction Ceremony for the 2017-18 school year. Principal Maryann O’Neill, Vice Principal Kevin Beirne and NHS moderators, Arthur Stuart and Sandy Deiber were in attendance to congratulate the honored students. Seventy-eight returning NHS members, including officers, were also invited to welcome the inductees and to renew their own commitments to the goals of the National Honor Society. “The hallmark of everything you will do here as an Honor Society member is respect,” said Principal Maryann O’Neill in her address to the inductees. “Go beyond yourself and recognize what true leadership means. Rotheimer’s daughter is the namesake behind “Jasmine’s law,” which strengthens penalties for various factors of sexual assault crimes. She said that, upon Silverstein meeting her, he took chief sponsorship of a bill she was advocating for. “I lost 20 pounds. My hair fell out,” she told the committee. “I had no control over the situation.” “It dumbfounds me to think that any person wants to be told ‘you’re intoxicating,’ especially if you’re a married man,” Rotheimer said. She said that Silverstein killed a bill of hers when he came under the impression that she had a boyfriend. Rotheimer alleges that he revived it when she told him that she was sin-

gle. In a call immediately after the hearing ended, Silverstein responded to the allegations. “I apologize if I made her feel uncomfortable but I will wait for the ethics commission’s results before I say anything,” he said. “I’’m not going to try this in the press.” Rotheimer said she went to Sen. President John Cullerton’s office with a complaint. She said she didn’t get a response from his office. Cullerton’s spokesman, John Patterson responded to Rotheimer’s testimony. “The Office of the Illinois Senate President was made aware of these accusations in late November 2016,” Patterson said. “Senior staff met with Senator Silverstein to let him know such allegations are taken seriously and that this would be reported to the

Legislative Inspector General’s Office, which it was.” Illinois has been without an inspector general for a number of years. At a news conference after the hearing, Madigan said sexual harassment can’t be tolerated. “I think it’s about time that the Illinois government, and Illinoisans in general, recognize that sexual harassment is not to be tolerated in Illinois government or anywhere in the state of Illinois,” Madigan said. That’s why he says he pushing legislation to required sexual harassment training and punishment for government officials and staff who sexually harass others, with the ultimate goal of “eradicating this problem from our society.” When asked about the allegations against Silverstein, Madigan said it was the first time he heard them. “It

does not sound good,” the speaker said. “I think it’s a matter that ought to be pursued, it ought to be investigated.” Madigan’s bill that would institute ethics training for lawmakers as well as others, passed through the committee unanimously. After the hearing, State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) said there could be “hundreds more stories” of sexual harassment out there similar to Rotheimer’s. “We need to start moving in a direction that allows everybody to be considered in a professional manner and ultimately start creating a work environment that’s free from harassment and treats everybody equally,” Kifowit said. “I think that the crux of the issue is individuals using their authority to coerce or harass other individuals and that’s just not right.”

27 complaints against lawmakers kept from Ethics Commission, senator says

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK In an explosive new revelation in the developing sexual harassment scandal enveloping the Illinois Capitol, a state lawmaker said Wednesday evening that more than 25 complaints filed against elected members of the General Assembly have been sitting in a file gathering dust since the staff position charged with investigating the claims became vacant three years ago. “It’s outrageous. It’s unacceptable. It’s just further evidence of a culture in Springfield that absolutely has to change,” Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, told Illinois News Network. McConnaughay is one of eight

elected lawmakers who serve on the Legislative Ethics Commission, which oversees the office of the Legislative Inspector General. The inspector general is responsible for investigating sexual harassment and other complaints filed against lawmakers, but the position has been vacant since 2014. “As late as this week, and after repeated inquiries by myself and others, members were assured that there were ‘no pending cases’ before the Ethics Commission,” McConnaughay said in a statement before talking to INN. “Today, I discovered that staff is, in reality, holding up to 27 separate complaints against members of the Illinois General Assem-

bly, and have used the fact that no Inspector General has been named as the reason there are – technically – no pending cases since it only becomes a ‘case’ when it is reviewed by the Inspector General.” McConnaughay’s revelation comes a day after a witness claimed in a House committee hearing that she filed a sexual harassment complaint against Chicago Democratic Sen. Ira Silverstein a year ago but never heard back about the accusation. Lobbyist Denise Rotheimer, a crime victim advocate, said Silverstein repeatedly made inappropriate comments to her, harassed her on Facebook and in telephone calls as

she tried to advance legislation in Springfield. “I lost 20 pounds. Hospital luncheon speakers urge women to take charge of health Know family history, risk factors; consider genetic counseling

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation held its annual Hope. Lives. Here. luncheon at Butterfield Country Club, as always in October because it is breast cancer awareness month. But many other kinds of cancers that especially afflict women were also discussed and the message was clear: women need to take charge and take care of their own health. The speakers were Christina M. Lavin, MS, LCGC, a genetic counselor at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center at Elmhurst Hospital, and Deborah Lindner, MD, FCO, FACP, Chief Medical Officer for an organization known as Bright Pink. Both brought many insights about the newer advancements in cancer treatment and research that have made cancer less of an automatic death sentence as it often was in years past. Speaker shares journey leading to mastectomy Lavin shared her own personal experience of learning early on that she was likely to be a cancer patient because her mother and grandmother were both survivors. What helped Lavin’s efforts to seek early treatment was genetic testing. “My grandmother and mother were blind-sided when they got cancer,” she told the room filled with about 250 people, mostly women. “Now, I realized, I have a gift of knowing the risk and being able to look at the research to see about my options. I knew I had to take advantage of the gift, because my grandma and mom were unable to.” At that time, the 1970s, it wasn’t the standard of care to have a mastectomy before any

actual cancer showed up, Lavin said. “Here I was, cancer free and age 33, but weighing the possibility to have a mastectomy,” she said. “As news got around, several people wrote and thanked me for my brave decision. I have to admit it was nice to be part of the ‘national conversation’ about cancer and genetic testing.” Be proactive about your health She stressed how important it was today for women to be proactive regarding their health. Lavin said there are 246,600 new cases of breast cancer every year in the United States, but many kinds are treatable. “The worst thing women face is ovarian

cancer,” Lavin said. “There is no test for it, it can lie dormant for years and by the time you have symptoms, it’s usually too late. By the time a doctor diagnoses a patient, she may be at Stage 4 already.” There are 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer in the U.S. annually, which is a much smaller number than those with breast cancer, however, two-thirds of the cases are fatal because they are untreatable. Cancer genetics break down as follows: 1. 75% of cases are sporadic, meaning there is no family history and no known risk. 2. 17.5% of cases are familial, that is, there is a family history of cancer, but no known risk. 3. 7.5% are like Lavin – she had no cancer, but was aware of a known risk. Lavin also mentioned that talking about women’s cancer needs to begin at an earlier age than we do today. “The general population who doesn’t know their risk group often don’t go to a doctor until they’re in their 40s or 50s, because up until then, most people are pretty healthy for the simple reason that they’re young,” Lavin said. “Women need to be talking to their doctor about breast cancer by age 30, especially if there is any family history.” The organization Bright Pink is working with doctors and hospitals to help women seek options like genetic counseling and to make decisions about treatment. Bright Pink offers a free web site women can visit any time called assessyourrisk.org.

tory. If a mother is diagnosed with cancer at 49, then the daughter should begin screening at 39, according to Lavin. 2. If you are a mother with daughters, be sure they know your medical history. If they are too young, write it down and save it for when they are older. 3. Know the signs of breast cancer. 4. Know your own body and your own “normal.” While doctors don’t necessarily see the value in self exams anymore, it’s still important to know what’s normal for you, in terms of the density of your breast, the smoothness, etc. If you know what you “should” feel and look like, it’s easier to judge if something is wrong. 5. Lifestyle modification. Lavin pointed out that nowadays, everyone is aware of the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, limiting sweets, etc. Whether they practice it or not is another thing, but Lavin said 27% of cancers can be attributed to alcohol consumption alone. 6. If you find you are at risk following genetic counseling, there are medications available that can reduce the risk.

More about Bright Pink When Dr. Deborah Lindner took over at the lectern, she shared many of the same ideas and suggestions that Lavin had talked about, but spoke a bit more about the environmental factors. St. Philip students raise over $900 during ‘Move Your Feet’ Walk

On Monday, Oct. 20, more than 200 students and faculty from St. Philip the Apostle Catholic School in Addison joined thousands of other students from around the Diocese of Joliet for the fifth annual “Move Your Feet To Give a Child a Seat” Walk. St. Philip the Apostle students walked a loop around their school then stopped by their campus’ Grotto to recite a decade of the Rosary. The day before the walk, students were given the opportunity to donate at least $5 toward the fund in exchange for “dressing down” (out of their usual school uniform) for the day. “Through those efforts, they raised $945 for the CEF scholarship fund,” said Principal Julie Noonan. All donations go directly to educate a child in need. This annual event has funded more than 100 new student scholarships since 2014. The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) provides tuition assistance to the most financially deserving students attending Catholic elementary and high schools in the Diocese of Joliet. Montini Catholic revives marching band after 30 year hiatus

Feelings of nostalgia were stoked as Montini Catholic celebrated the much anticipated revival of their “Band of Bronocs.” The Lasallian school’s group of marching musicians played their first halftime show 46 years ago in 1971. After marching into the sunset in the late 1980s, Montini’s ‘new’ band once again paraded right into the spotlight at Duffy Memorial Stadium on Homecoming Night, Sept. 29, to the delight of parents and fans.

The music students could be both seen and heard throughout the weeks prior to the big game practicing their marching skills on campus. Under the direction of Mr. Matthew Loeb and Mr. Belford Hernandez the band delighted Bronco fans as they played the “Star Spangled Banner” at kickoff and performed the hits of Queen during an impressive halftime show! A special encore performance was given during the school’s Fall Concert on Oct. 12.

Montini Catholic alumnus returns to share experience Class of 2010’s Milcent tells about Peace Corps

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard welcomed back former student, Julien Milcent from their Class of 2010. Julien is currently a volunteer with the United States Peace Corps and visited Montini Theology students to talk about his experiences with the organization. A graduate of North Central College in Naperville, Julien is serving in Indonesia where he teaches 7th, 8th and 9th grade English in an Islamic school of approximately 700 students. He and his wife Emily, who also volunteers with the Peace Corps, live in Lumajang, East Java (also known as ‘Banana Town’). “The Peace Corps is not missionary work,” Julien told the students. “We are not there to convert others to Christianity. We can, however, talk about our faith if asked.” While acknowledging that he is not an expert in Islam, Julien told the students that his experience in Indonesia has helped him to see its similarities to Christianity, as opposed to the differences heard about so often. Willowbrook names Akhtar 88’s Best for October

Taha Akhtar has been named as Willowbrook’s October recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his outstanding academic accomplishments. Akhtar, a senior, was recognized during the Oct. 30 District 88 Board of Education meeting. As a student, Akhtar consistently pursues the most rigorous courses available. At the conclusion of his high school career, Akhtar will have completed 14 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as a multitude of Honors courses. As a result of his academic success, Akhtar has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction and has

been named to the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of his high school career. He also received the Outstanding Freshman Award and is a 2017 QuestBridge College Prep Scholar. Akhtar is an inductee of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Math Honor Society and serves as Historian for Civitas (Social Studies Honor Society). Students and staff at Montini Catholic High School in Lombard participated in the fourth annual “Move Your Feet To Give a Child a Seat” on Friday, Oct. 20. The unique event, sponsored by the Diocese of Joliet, was developed to raise funds and awareness for the 4,100 empty classroom seats within the diocesan schools. Montini Catholic students and faculty raised close to $1,600 to help provide families in need the opportunity to give their children a Catholic education. Students donating to the fund were allowed hang up their school uniforms, put on their favorite tennis shoes and dress down for the day. Relevant Radio Chicago was the 2017 Sponsor for the Move Your Feet Campaign again this year. The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) distributes more than 1,600 need-based scholarships each year. Eligible families with students K-12 are encouraged to apply for financial assistance to help cover the cost of tuition. Willowbrook football team headed back to state quarterfinals Palma runs in girls cross-country state meet

It’s back to the state quarterfinals for the Willowbrook football team. The Warriors were 29-10 winners over visiting DeKalb in a Class 6A second-round playoff matchup in Villa Park.

The win moves Willowbrook, the No. 4 seed in the top half of the Class 6A bracket, to 10-1 on the season and puts the Warriors on a bus to northwest suburban Crystal Lake for a showdown with No. 1 seed and 11-0 Prairie Ridge in the 6A quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. Willowbrook advanced to the state quarterfinals last season as well, finishing with an 8-4 record. In the win against DeKalb, the Warriors held leads of 3-0 and 9-0 before

Standout running back Jack Jessen scored three touchdowns in the team’s win against DeKalb in the second round. The Warriors will head to northwest suburban McHenry County to face a highly touted Prairie Ridge team that was given another run for its money by District 155 rival CaryGrove in the second round. Prairie Ridge beat Cary-Grove 7-6 in the season opener and then won 17-13 in the playoffs last week at CaryGrove. If you subtract those two games against Cary-Grove, Prairie Ridge won the other nine games by an average of 34 points and scored 50 or more points in seven of those contests. Of note, however, in Prairie Ridge’s four closest games against Cary-Grove and fellow conference foes Huntley and Jacobs—all playoff teams—the margin of victory was an average of just under seven points. Willowbrook is in the state quarterfinals for the second year in a row after reaching the round of eight in Class 7A last year. Looking ahead, if Willowbrook wins this contest, it would travel to Hoffman Estates or Belvidere North in the semifinals based on Hoffman and Belvidere having hosted only one playoff game each and Willowbrook having hosted two already.

IC Catholic Prep defeated unbeaten Wilmington 48-14 at home to advance to the semifinals. The Knights went on the road last week to No. 4 seed Peotone and got things done with a good mix of run and pass. Lazerick Eatman scored three total touchdowns in the contest and has gone over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. Eatman has 125 carries for 1,005 yards (8.0 yards per carry) and 16 touchdowns. Quarterback CJ West has thrown for 1,590 yards and has an impressive 23 touchdown passes against only two interceptions. Wilmington, the No. 8 seed on the top half of the bracket, upset No. 1 seed Farmington 37-12 in the second round. Wilmington plays in the same Interstate Eight Conference Small Division as Peotone, last week’s opponent for IC Catholic Prep, does. Wilmington won the conference with a 5-0 record and beat Peotone 27-21 at Peotone. Wilmington won its first-round playoff game against ElmwoodBrimfield (30-14), an IC Catholic Prep playoff foe from two years ago. IC Catholic Prep is 35-3 over the last three seasons. Looking ahead, if IC Catholic Prep wins this game, it either will host Williamsville (110) in the semifinals or head up west of Rockford to play Byron (11-0).

Willowbrook led 15-7 and DeKalb cut it to five points at 15-10 before the Warriors scored two more touchdowns for the final margin. The IC Catholic Prep football team ran its postseason winning streak to seven games in a row after a 29-16 victory against host Peotone in second-round action of the Class 2A state playoffs. IC Catholic Prep (10-1) heads to the state quarterfinals once again either Friday or Saturday where it will host No. 8 seed Wilmington (10-1) with a berth in the Class 3A semifinals on the line. Wilmington upset No. 1 seed Farmington in the second round. IC Catholic Prep is the No. 5 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket. In the triumph over Peotone on the road, quarterback CJ West completed 11 of 17 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown. IC Catholic Prep presented a

balanced offensive attack with its ground game amassing 139 yards yards on only 29 carries (4.8 yards per carry). Senior Lazerick Eatman ran 22 times for 107 yards and had two rushing touchdowns. He had a long run of 35 yards. West ran seven times for 32 yards and scored a touchdown. He had a long run of 20 yards. Eatman also had three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. He finished the night with 196 total yards and three total touchdowns. Khalil Saunders caught four passes for 66 yards, while Khali Saunders had four receptions for 39 yards. On the defensive end, sophomore Kevin Cooke had 15 tackles, while Khali Saunders had 10 tackles. Jacob Lytton had nine tackles and Ricky Mysliwiec had seven tackles and Ryan Malek had six tackles.

Addison Trail boys basketball team starting over Blazers return no starters from last year’s 18-win team

Eleventh-year Addison Trail boys basketball coach Brendan Lyons isn’t kidding when he says his team is starting with a blank slate. The Blazers, who finished 18-12 overall and 5-7 in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division last season, return no starters from the 20162017 team. “This year’s team will start the season with a true ‘blank slate,’” said Lyons. “We graduated more than 90 percent of our scoring and rebounding from last year’s 18-win team.”

Key players lost to graduation include 6-6 power forward Colten Noel (playing at Goshen College), 6-0 point guard Jack Kalbas, who was a three-year starter and 6-5 small forward Michael Williams, who is playing at St. Ambrose. Senior power forward Mike Pudlo (6-3) has the most varsity experience, but Lyons noted he still is rehabbing an injury suffered over the summer. Junior shooting guard Adem Mehmeti (6-3) played last year as well on the big club as a sophomore. “Adem played up on varsity as a sophomore last year and earned some valuable experience that we hope pays off this year,” said Lyons. Other key newcomers include 6-0 senior Connor Palesch (shooting guard), 6-2 senior A.J. Parnell (shooting guard), 6-3 senior Vito Ciaccia

(shooting guard), 6-4 senior Albert White (power forward), 6-2 senior Guillermo Rizo (shooting guard), 6-3 junior J.T. Daniels (power forward), 6-0 sophomore A.J. Carlson (point guard) and 6-3 freshman Robert Roszkiewicz (small forward). “On the offensive end of the floor we will really have to commit to playing an unselfish style of basketball,” said Lyons. “I think we will be able to shoot the ball well from the perimeter, especially with Connor and A.J., but taking care of the ball will be a big factor in our success at that end of the floor.” Lyons said the team will use different looks on defense. “On the defensive side of things we will contin-

Fenton boys cross-country team finishes 23rd in state Bison girls volleyball team celebrates many positives By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

The Fenton boys cross-country team wrapped up its season by finishing 23rd at the Class 2A state finals held at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Fenton finished with 547 total points. Cristian Sanchez led the Bison with an 84th place finish in 16:03. He averaged 5:20.8 per mile.

Randy Almarales finished 141st with a time of 16:33, while Jeremy Lodewyck was 146th in 16:35. Michael Lieggi placed 157th (16:45) and Alex Whyte rounded out the Fenton scoring with a 170th place finish (16:56). Sophomore Samuel Elizondo also ran and finished 176th (17:01), while Chris Zavala was 204th with a time of 17:49.

Mackenzie Miller set a school record with 440 setting assists. Kukielko finished the year with a team-high 154 digs. Krzyszkowski earned all-Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division honors. Kleidorfer said Fenton’s biggest strides this season came on the defensive end. “Our team defense was our biggest improvement this season,” she said. “We did a great job of keeping the ball in play a lot more than in years past.” Fenton also broke a lengthy conference losing streak this season. “Getting that conference win this year meant a lot to the entire program,” said Kleidorfer. “We really wanted to show that we could get a win before the conference realignment next season. The girls had worked so hard for four years and that win will be remembered for a long time.” Kleidorfer was a big fan of the team’s character this season. “We really liked that the girls showed up just about every match ready to compete no matter who we were playing,” she said. “There was no more feeling like we didn’t have a chance.” The coach also cited strong play from Isabella Wielga and Julianna Krebasch. “Isabella made a big impact not only when she was playing but also when she missed a month with a thumb injury,” she said. “She always was there to help her teammates. Julianna also made a huge impact in the middle. That gave us two middles we knew were a threat at all times. Teams had to respect our mid-
