he Village of Union Grove and the greater area that includes the towns of Yorkville, Dover/ Kansasville and Raymond is known as the “Heart of Racine County” and this is Our Town. While a growing community, especially with the Foxconn project, the area works hard to maintain that small-town charm we’re known for. No matter where you are, you’re within minutes of shopping, restaurants, local activities and more. This is a close-knit community and we think of each other as neighbors, whether we live a few blocks or a few miles down the road. That feeling of connectedness is reflected in the area’s service organizations, local governments, schools and our commitment to community. As our local events show, we love

to celebrate. From the annual Fourth of July Parade to our summer block party and street dance to the popular Fall Festival complete with pumpkin chuckin’ there’s almost always something fun and interesting going on. Union Grove also plays host to the Racine County Fair with the fairgrounds downtown. Every summer we welcome exhibitors and guests from all over the state to our small town. Winter doesn’t stop the fun either with the Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas celebration that sets the tone for the season the first Saturday in December there’s always something to do no matter what time of the year. OUR PARKS The Village of Union Grove has 13 designated park areas within the village limits. Leider Park (8th Avenue and High Street) has bathroom facilities, pavilion and soccer field as well as playground equipment. American Legion Memorial Park (7th Avenue and Main Street) is the new home of our dog park with a sledding hill in the winter. Village Square (Main Street and 10th Avenue); this is the location of the Village Christmas Tree and the Union Grove Farmers Market. Ryan Moe Michael Young Park located off of 67th Drive has playground equipment and bathroom facilities, along

with a football field. School Yard Park- on the historic site of Union Grove Elementary School (14th Avenue at New Street) has a brand new concession stand, bathroom facilities and several baseball diamonds as well as playground equipment. Lauer Wildlife Preserve located in the Fox Creek subdivision is the home of Whitetail Lake. Other parks are Old Settlers County Park (Highway 11); 12th and Vine Park; 18th Avenue Park and Indian Trail Park (New Street); Martin’s Pond; Woods Park and Bufton Park. IS MORE THAN A CUP OF COFFEE

ommunity State Bank reopened its Union Grove office and Shepherds Community Café in the summer of 2018. The office was under renovation for months and features a new drive through, two community rooms, employee collaboration areas and an outdoor patio space. “The design reflects everything a community bank stands for – strong communities and building quality relationships. We encourage our neighbors to stop in and check out our office and new café,” bank President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Huedepohl said at the time of the opening.

Shepherds Community Café is a collaboration between Community State Bank and Shepherds College. The café provides training, work experience and job opportunities for local students with intellectual disabilities. “Shepherds Community Café is more than coffee,” café manager Brooke Clark said. “It’s about acceptance, inclusion, utilizing our student’s unique talents and bringing our communities together. Nothing galls us more than hearing the words, “Shepherds College is the best kept secret.” Gaaaahhhh!! We’re not keeping our program a secret. Our Marketing team has been working hard for over a decade to spread the word about our groundbreaking program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The problem is, unless a parent knows Shepherds College exists, odds are good they won’t be looking. It was only recently that post-secondary schools for people with intellectual disabilities became an option. so they don’t bother seeking out more advanced educational opportunities. Marketing for the new Shepherds College was a challenge from the beginning. How do you get people to find a small post-secondary school when they’re not actively looking, and you’re operating on a miniscule marketing budget? When Community State Bank gave Shepherd College the gift of Shepherds Community Café, they didn’t realize they were also giving us the gift of awareness. Shepherds College may be small, but its impact on the lives of students with intellectual disabilities and their families is immense. Our program changes lives for these people by giving hope, fulfilling dreams and bringing dignity through education, self-advocacy, self-awareness and independence. Parents find security and peace watching their children become confident, capable and empowered. The Shepherds College program also changes the hearts and minds of people exposed to our students in community.

We pray that this heightened awareness of our café and college will bring new students, additional funding for our vital mission, and a more educated, accepting world for people with intellectual disabilities. Most importantly, we pray that people will see God working in mighty ways in the lives of the people we serve through the love generated in real community. Annual Breakfast on the Farm attracts thousands

For some visitors to the Racine County BY Jason Arndt Breakfast on the Farm, the experience was STAFF WRITER more than just savoring a hearty farm meal – it was an opportunity to interact with the animals. With more than 3,000 visitors attending 2018’s fourth annual event, hosted by Bratz Dairy Farm in Franksville, there were plenty of options for both adults and children, like 8-year-old Carmine Granados of Racine. “Petting the cows and eating breakfast are my favorite things,” said Granados, who showed adoration for one of the farm’s 175 cows. Granados’ grandmother, Paula Cacciotti, has made it a family affair since the event was brought back several years ago after a 15-year hiatus. “It is always a wonderful day with the family and I look forward to it every year,” she said. Sarah Eulgen, the 2017 Racine County Fairest of the Fair, said the breakfast brought back memories of growing up around Burlington. Eulgen, who graduated from Burlington High School in 2013, also noted it was an opportunity to educate the public • CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

on agriculture and offer a preview of the County Fair held in July. “It is actually great. I love educating the public of the fair. I love educating people on agriculture,” she said. “It is really a great way to get connected with the community.” Part of the connection includes witnessing children roam around the petting zoo and learn about animals firsthand with some showing interest in joining area 4-H groups. “One of my favorite things is going to the petting zoo and seeing all of the kids,” she said.

The farm produces about 9,500 pounds of milk daily that is distributed to Foremost Farms for further processing.

After some rainfall the night before, organizers decided to close on-site parking and referred visitors to shuttle locations.

According to Bratz, the shuttle service received positive feedback. “I heard a lot of good feedback, the only hiccup that I heard was that a lot of the school parking lots got filled up fast,” she said. This year’s Breakfast on the Farm, which will be held at Jasperson Sod Farm in Union Grove, is slated for June 22.

The experiences, according to farm owner Jackie Bratz, were part of the event’s mission. Bratz, who operates the farm with her husband, Jeremy, said she was honored to host the fourth annual Breakfast on the Farm. “It was an honor and it has been a lot of fun,” she said. “It has been exciting to watch everybody walk around and check out where their food comes from and see how milk is produced.” The fifth-generation farm features Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and crossbred cows.

Gerald Karwowski, owner of the Oak BY Chad Hensiak Clearing Farm and Museum north of Union CORRESPONDENT Grove, has dedicated most of his life and land to preserving Racine County’s history. Karwowski, also known as the “Bottle Man,” got his start as a history collector when he found some old bottles in the late 1960s. Those first few bottles started an obsession that lead to Gerald and his wife, Marie, devoting a large portion of their lives to collecting, preserving and displaying some of Racine County’s most unusual historical gems. The Karwowski’s collection is housed in several buildings on the 90 acres of farmland known as the Oak Clearing Farm. Established in 1867, the farm has a history of its own and the land the farm is on features two creeks with bridges, walking paths, huge oak trees and horses. The Oak Clearing Museum began in 1988. Today, the museum is one of the largest privately owned museums dedicated to preserving Racine County’s history. The museum’s collection features items as large as entire buildings to everyday items like pencils from the 1840s to today. Two of the buildings on display at the museum are the Old Forge Blacksmith shop that was in operation between 1855 and 1955, and the Rose-Callender House – a pioneer home complete with a bedroom, living room with a potbelly stove, pump organ and a kitchen full of items from the 1800s. Gerald Karwowski’s collecting life when Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz stopped out to film an episode of the History Channel’s television series called “American Pickers” in August 2016. The episode featuring the Oak Clearing Farm and Museum originally aired on Jan. 30, 2017. “I knew I was a true collector when Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz showed up to film for over nine hours at the museum,” Karwowski said. “At first, I did not want to sell anything to them because my collection was never about making money. However, I eventually parted with a few things because that is what they came for. “The highlight of the day way when Mike and Frank were sitting in my living room with their feet up.
