In past years, programs have been held at the Bog and at the various forest preserves to acquaint residents of the area with the unique birds that make their home here. With all of us practicing social distancing due to the corona virus pandemic, enjoying these type of programs is not to be this year. While Sandhill Cranes are not commonly seen in the Chain O’ Lakes area, there are three known pairs who make their home in the marshes of Volo Bog, according to Stacy Iwanicki of the Volo Bog. There are also a few more pairs,

which tend to nest in the area, across the street from the bog. These long beaked and long legged birds with their beautiful feathers are a sight to enjoy. A favorite rite of spring according to residents and visitors along the Chain O’ Lakes is the arrival of the pelicans. They usually are first seen as they arrive in late February or early March and remain in the area for several weeks. According to Pat Schafer who lives on Pistakee Lake, the arrival of the pelicans means that spring is arriving.
Pelicans on the Chain The American White Pelicans have only been seen in the Chain
O’ Lakes area for the past few years. Historically they migrated along the Mississippi River but a few years ago they moved east to large bodies of open water such as the Chain. The pelicans came for the abundance of fish in the water, and comfortable nesting places that they chose to make their temporary home here in our waters. Just as many of us find the lakes of the Chain a popular place to live or visit, so do the pelicans. The pelicans are seen mostly on Pistakee Lake, Nippersink Lake, and Fox Lake. A favorite nesting place in Pistakee Lake is along Half Moon Island close to where the lake and the Fox River meet. The small island was once a larger inhabited island that was flooded when the dam was placed in the Fox River, south of Pistakee Lake, near McHenry. The dam raised the level of Pistakee Lake and moved much of the island under water. Alongside the island is a berm, probably the result of some of the submerged island. Here the pelicans can be seen lined up at night to sleep. American White Pelicans are large birds with a length of 50 to 70 inches, white with black tipped wings. The black tips can only be seen when the wings are spread. Their wingspan is a majestic 9 feet. Unlike the Canadian Geese, which fly in a V formation, the pelicans tend to fly in a straight line.

Pelicans are noted for their unique way of capturing food. The American White Pelicans do not dive for fish as many other birds do, but rather swim in a group of 4 -5 pelicans in shallow water. They will find a school of fish and surround them moving them closer together and then open their mouths and take in as many fish and as much water as possible, dropping their throat sac which is located on the underside of their lower beaks, to hold the fish and water. The water is then released while the fish remain and are swallowed.
Enjoying the water While there is a lot of activity along
the water, along the shore there are also signs of the arrival of the warmer weather. Slowly the grass, which has appeared brown and listless, after a few April showers, begins to turn green. The trees begin to bud and it is not long before the new leaves start to appear. The sure sign that warmer weather has appeared is the arrival of the early spring flowers as they poke their way through the
ground, some years so early that they burst through remnants of snow and burst into bloom. Crocus, tulips and daffodils begin to bloom adding a burst of color as the yellows, pinks and blues peek out of the ground. Along the shores, it is the sight of private piers being placed back into the water usually around the beginning of April. They are removed each fall to prevent damage to them with the water freezing and thawing. If the piers are back in place, it makes one realize that the boats are not far behind. And it is the boats which bring the lakes to life. “Usually we see piers back in the water in April, but the last few years have been different. The past two to three years we have had to deal with flooding which kept boats from being out on the water. Now the pandemic has affected boaters many of whom have lost their jobs and may not be able to afford to run their boat this year,” shared Jim Umbarger III, owner of Hustler Sports Center, McHenry. “We had to cancel our April boat
deliveries until the piers are in place and reschedule those deliveries for May,” Umbarger said. As we enjoy more sunshine and warmer temperatures we begin to see more boats out on the water. The fishermen make their way to the lake of their choice where they will enjoy their favorite spring and summer activity, fishing. Each fisherman has a favorite spot where they believe the fish are waiting for them. Once again the speed boats are speeding up and down the chain enjoying time on the water and creating waves. Sometimes they are pulling a water skier. Large tubes are fun to ride in as they are pulled through the waves produced by the boat. From children to adults the pull of time on the water skis or less actively riding the waves in a tube brings families together. According to Munson Marine in Fox Lake, the most popular boat seems to be the pontoon boat. Once considered the

old person’s boat as it moved slowly in the water, today’s pontoons have changed dramatically. Many have much larger engines than the older pontoons and while resting on air tubes they are known for their buoyancy as they move across the water. Pontoon boats are known for their versatility in styles. They have adequate seating which when ordered new can be customized to meet your needs. They are comfortable for entertaining and are easy to drive and dock especially for those just starting to enjoy boating. With proper care pontoons have a long life span. Pontoon boats do not change much in style so there is little desire to update the boat as frequently. With the right engine it is no longer “grandpa’s pontoon.” Throughout the Chain O’ Lakes pontoons are frequently seen cruising down the waterway as riders enjoy the breeze on their faces while visiting with friends. This year with fuel costs so low, many boat owners are looking forward to taking their boats out more frequently. The high fuel costs of past years often kept some owners limiting use of their boats to a minimum. For those who are enjoying a slower calmer time, they launch their single or double kayaks and enjoy paddling along the lake. Kayaking has become a favorite sport on the water in the last five to 10 years. Inexpensive to buy and no cost to run, no motor just paddle power, families are frequently seen in groups making their way along the lake. Boating has something for everyone. Even when not in a boat the beauty of the boats traveling in the water on a beautiful day is enjoyed by those watching from the shore. Summer 2020

Each spring as the days get warmer, more boats appear on the water with boat owners and their families close behind to enjoy their time on the lake. Unfortunately boat maintenance takes up a good part of the recreational time many people Summer 2020
have to enjoy the time on their boats. When longtime friends Emily Zugay and Erika Price were looking at possible business ideas, they knew they wanted to do something that would keep them outside preferably along the waterfront where they could enjoy the best of the summer while they would provide a worthwhile service. Having grown up in southeastern Wisconsin, the young women said the waterfront was an important part of their lives. However, as they watched the boat owners spend hours cleaning their boats prior to taking them out on the water, the idea for their business was created. “We would take over the job of detailing the boats so that the boat owner, instead of spending hours cleaning their boats, could spend the time on the water enjoying their boat,” Zugay said.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? “One of the hardest decisions was coming up with a name for the business,” she said. “We wanted something that was catchy and would be remembered by customers. And we wanted something that was both unique and would describe exactly what services we offered.” While they spent most of last year trying to find just the right name, it was Price’s mother who finally came up with the name Barnacle Babes Boat Detailing last fall. They believe the name perfectly describes both them and their business. The idea for boat detailing came from Price who had worked in a boat business prior to branching off to start her own business with Emily. “Detailing boats is hard work, work we look forward to doing,” Price said. “We spent time researching what exactly needs to be done to prepare the boats to be clean and sparkly. We researched products that are the safest to use on the boats.” “Basically we offer three levels of service,” said Zugay. Those levels provide a variety of ways to keep the boat looking its best and prevent it from deteriorating from exposure to the elements, especially the hot sun.
DEEP CLEAN The first is the Deep Clean, which is usually done when the boat is coming out of

This is a service that many boat owners prefer to hire out than to tackle on their own. “We need to go through all the boat’s compartments and thoroughly clean them from the engines to the seats, floors and all spots in between,” said Zugay. Sometimes she said they find items that have been misplaced by the boat owners, such as sunglasses, ear pods or other personal items and after a long winter in storage may find spiders and other small critters that have made the boat their winter home. “Owners are always glad to get their personal belongings back and to realize they have not lost them. And they are delighted to have the boat cleared of all uninvited guests,” said Zugay. Deep cleaning includes both interior and exterior services. Starting with the interior, they will clean all vinyl cushions and the interior surfaces of the boat. Then they will vacuum all carpets and compartments. Interior glass will be cleaned until it is spotless. Mold and mildew whether on cushions or boat surfaces will be removed. They will follow up with UV protectant vinyl shine on all cushions. And finally, they will wash and scrub all floor surfaces and wipe down all the fiberglass on the interior. They will also clean and vacuum the inside of the Bimini top.
TLC FOR THE EXTERIOR Once the interior is complete, they will move to the exterior of the boat. They will begin by washing and drying the exterior of the boat or at least all that is accessible. If the boat has a swimming deck, it will be scrubbed down. All live wells and exterior compartments will be cleaned along with all exterior glass. UV protectant will be applied to keep color from fading. Even the engine will be cleaned and shined. Finally they will clean and vacuum the Bimini top. Cleaning the boat after storage is a big job and requires hard work, work the Barnacle Babes are willing to provide.
REGULAR TOUCH-UPS The second level of service is the weekly or bi-weekly touch up. This service is to clean up the boat so that it looks its best, removing the regular dirt and grime that accumulates. “Much like a weekly Summer 2020

cleaning for your home,” Price said. They wash the entire inside of the boat paying special attention to the seats. Many of the boats have upholstery that is vinyl and needs to be cleaned regularly and protected from the UV rays that tend to dry it out and fade it. The services provided for the weekly or bi-weekly cleaning are customizable to suit the boat owner’s desires. Services include both interior and exterior cleaning. Starting with the inside, they will vacuum the entire interior of the boat. All vinyl cushions will be cleaned along with all vinyl surfaces. Interior glass will be cleaned and all fiberglass surfaces will be wiped down. On the exterior of the boat they will, as with the deep clean, wash and dry the boat exterior as far as it is accessible. They will apply the UV protectant wax to prevent fading of color and as with the interior will clean all glass.
DON’T FORGET THE TRAILER The third level of service is not focused on the boat but on the boat’s trailer for those who transport their watercraft to the lake on weekends or on vacations. Trailers are notorious for picking up all kinds of road grime. The Barnacle Babes Detailing will take on the work of cleaning the entire trailer including the tires to remove any mud or other debris that accumulates. To do this they will begin by washing and drying the entire trailer. They will apply UV protectant wax to the trailer as they did to the boat itself. The tires will be washed and shined for a clean look. “We are very competitive with our pricing,” Zugay said. “The costs vary by type of service and size of boat. We have a very solid work ethic and are sure customers will be pleased with the results of their cleaning.” One of the advantages of having Barnacle Babes do your detailing is that you do not have to bring the boat to them. They go to the boat and you don’t have to be there while they complete their tasks. The women use an appointment system, so boat owners know when they will be arriving to begin work. take care of any other business while they are cleaning the boat. When you take friends out on the boat you will be proud of the way it looks, just like it arrived from the dealer when first purchased. Price and Zugay have similar backgrounds. They attended the same high school although Price was a senior when Zugay was starting as a freshman. They both have worked for Disney World in Florida although again at different times and in different jobs. Zugay worked with character representations while Price served as a lifeguard on Blizzard Beach. Each of them was in Florida for about 6 to 8 months per year.
STRONG WORK ETHIC Both women said working at Disney really reinforced their work ethic. They also have each worked at Lake Lawn Resort on the golf course although again at different times. And Price has also worked for a local boat company. They have both been trained in boat detailing. Price is enrolled in flight school at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha. “Flight work is a family tradition,” she said. “I will be the third generation pilot in my family when I finish.” Her mother was a pilot for United Airlines, her father was a pilot while he was in the military. Her grandfather was also a pilot while her grandmother served as a flight attendant. “My parents actually met at Gateway while attending the same program I am currently enrolled in,” Price added. Perhaps one day you may run across her as you board your flight as she announces her presence at the controls to the passengers. The Barnacle Babes Detailing serves its customers from April 1 through Oct. 30. This year because of the COVID-19 virus they will not be detailing boats until May 1 at the earliest. Why the water matters to novice kayakers Kayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon, particularly in summertime. If smiles on the faces of kayakers aren’t enough to convince you just how fun this sport can be, perhaps statistics can convince you how enjoyable it is to paddle away in a kayak. According to the Physical Activity Council, which each year conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation and leisure activity participation in the United States, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddlesport in the United States, attracting more than 11 million participants each year. People who have never before been in a kayak may be intrigued by those statistics and tempted to follow the example set by millions of kayakers who take to the water every day when the weather permits. Safety should be a top priority for all kayakers, and especially for novices. A kayaking course can be a great way for novices to familiarize themselves with the basics of kayaking, including the best practices in regard to staying safe on the water. Local watersports retailers and recreational organizations that take Summer 2020
watersports enthusiasts out on the water may offer safety courses, and these courses can be great resources while also helping people get their feet wet before paddling away. When kayaking for the first time, it’s important that novices choose the right type of water for their experience level. Rough, choppy waters can prove challenging to even the most skilled kayakers, and these same waters can be deadly for novices. The following are some characteristics novice kayakers should look for in a body of water before pushing themselves and their kayakers into the current.
SIZE
Novices should avoid vast bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers or large lakes, until they gain more experience. Large ponds and small lakes can be great places to gain some experience and familiarize oneself with the nuances of paddling.

Buddy up for safety when adventuring outdoors The buddy system is a popular and effective safety measure. The “buddy system” involves teaming up with a partner to prevent the safety risks of being alone. Both parties are then responsible for ensuring the other person’s safety. The buddy system is effective in various situations. For example, someone who works in a remote location or with
hazardous substances can benefit from having a teammate nearby in the event something goes awry. That buddy can then call for help or even administer help on his or her own. Office fire evacuation plans often pair employees up so that each is responsible for making sure the other has evacuated and reached safety. In that instance, the buddy system reduces confusion and makes for a more organized system. The buddy system also may be utilized in emergencies or instances when there is increased risk for injury, such as during a natural disaster or while engaging in certain risky activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that buddies can each look out for hazardous conditions, safety demands and stressors. Buddies can be utilized when a person is swimming, surfing, hiking, biking, or camping in the wilderness. Many schools also utilize buddy systems so that students are never alone.
This is handy during school trips or when students are not on campus. The buddy system helps instill a sense of responsibility. Buddies help make sure their partners get back on the bus and are accounted for when there may not be enough adult chaperones. Children who walk home from school or wait at a bus stop may be paired with a buddy for increased safety against strangers and other hazards. The Holts Summit Police Department in Missouri says that a child alone could become a much easier target if a predator drove by than if a child were with a buddy or in a group. Buddies can be a friend, an older sibling or an adult approved by parents or guardians. Buddies also may be friends who are asked along when another wants to enjoy a night out on the town or use a rideshare or taxi service, but wants to minimize the risks that could arise if he or she goes it alone. hile there are some people who grill year-round, for many bringing out the grill and placing those first burgers and bratwursts of the season on it, is a rite of spring. The savory aroma of meats cooking on the grill is a reminder that spring is here. It is a time when we move outdoors to enjoy the beauty and warmth of the season. When cooking meats such as burgers, steaks, pork chops, or chicken use the direct heat method of grilling. That is the meat is placed directly over the heat source so that it sears the meat before it finishes cooking through, keeping the meat moist. “One mistake many grillers make is overcooking their meats, especially pork,” Schmaling said. “Even pork can be eaten while still pink in the center as long as the internal temperature is 145 degrees.” For other cuts of meats, including hams and roasts, the method to use is indirect heat cooking. The coals are placed along the sides and the meat is placed in the center without coals beneath it. This prevents the meat from burning on the outside before the inside cooks. Indirect cooking is also the way to cook ribs, another of the favorite grill meats. Wilson’s has a lot of grilling experience. For the last few years, the store offers an outdoor luncheon on their property from Thursday through the weekend. Staff members serve a number of smoked or grilled meats each week. They hope to be able to do so again this summer. Wilson’s will pair its outdoor barbecue with an indoor restaurant, the Whistle Stop, that will offer different foods such as rotisserie chicken, and menu items that aren’t smoked on the grill. While they had initially planned on opening in May the actual date will be dependent on when restrictions related to the coronavirus are lifted, according to Bassett.
