Jo Carroll Career Technical Education Academy to host open house

By John Day

On Route 20, just east of Elizabeth there is a brick building with chrome lettering on the wall that spells out Jo Carroll. On the lawn in front of the building signs have been erected which refer to the property as the Jo Carroll Career Technical Education Academy. For far too many people that’s about all that is known about the building or what goes on inside of it. CTE Academy as it is called is a program that offers high school students in Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties the opportunity to begin the pursuit of their careers in technical fields or trades. Programs offered include Auto Technology, Graphic Communications, Computer Networking and Security, as well as Culinary Arts and others. Nancy Paige-Jogerst has been the Executive Director at CTE for the past 4 years. Paige- Jogerst said, “CTE has been here offering education and training since 1972. Since then, more than 11,000 students have participated in our programs. At present we have about 200 students enrolled. CTE is funded by the tuition paid by member districts and numerous grants.” Irene Thraen-Borowski is the graphic communications instructor and had completed training as a student in the CTE program in the 90’s. She has since returned to the academy to take a teaching position. Thraen-Borowski said, “Changes in the employment market in recent years have created a renewed interest in CTE as jobs in the trades and other technical fields increase. The current workforce continues to age and retire, thereby increasing the number of employment opportunities in our area and across the state. “Regardless of which career program a student may be following, we encourage them to continue their education after completing the CTE program. Most classes at CTE offer dual college credit from Highland Community College completely free for our student body. For those students seeking full time employment after gradua-

tion we have a near 100 percent placement rate. Other students who plan to continue their education have had considerable success finding part time employment to offset their expense while continuing their training.” In an effort to increase public awareness about CTE, the academy will be hosting an open house on Feb. 7. Thraen-Borowski who is overseeing this event said, “This free event will allow the public the opportunity learn what goes on in each classroom by meeting instructors and about the students. Students will demonstrate their skills and display some of the projects which they have completed. Students in the culinary arts program will be serving appetizers which they will have prepared and there will also be a 50/50 raffle.” The open house is being held Feb. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Jo Carroll Career Technical Education Academy is located at 950 US Rt. 20 W. in Elizabeth. To contact the academy for further information about this event or any of their programs, they can be reached at 815858-2203 or visit this website: www. cteacademy.net. Additional current events information can be found on the academy Facebook page: Jo Daviess Carroll CTE Academy.

Chris Hamilton to leave Greater Galena Marketing Inc. By Tony Carton EDITOR

President and CEO of Greater Galena Marketing Inc., Chris Hamilton has accepted at job with the Valdosta, Ga. convention and tourism authority. Hamilton began working with GGMI three years ago. He said the Valdosta organization has $1.2 million more in their budget, three times the staff size, a large, full service convention center and sports complexes for recruiting tournaments. “I believe the biggest accomplishment of our organization during my tenure was executing the Singular Voice Plan that closed the County

CVB department and brought all destination marketing services under the Greater Galena Marketing corporate umbrella,” said Hamilton. “That will generate better results for this entire destination and is truly the best and most efficient system.” He said a secondary benefit of the Singular Voice Plan was the awareness it created and the education people all

over Galena Country got about what a DMO does, how it can positively impact communities of different sizes and why the travel and tourism industry is beneficial to everyone. “I’m very proud of the work we’ve done over the past three and a half years,” Hamilton said. “We transformed this bureau into a professional and highly productive organization.

Our results over the past few years are the best in the history of GGMI and the organization is positioned to prosper long after I’m gone.” Hamilton said the move to Georgia is an opportunity to take a big step personally and professionally. “Valdosta is an attractive destination
