Illusionist Tristan Crist finds audience amid coronavirus by Mike Ramczyk CORRESPONDENT
How can you still provide family-friendly fun and entertainment indoors during a pandemic? Well, Tristan Crist Magic Theater in Lake Geneva is proving it’s not only possible, but also people can feel safe and still enjoy themselves. Rated the No. 1 tourist attraction in Lake Geneva, the local illusion king has been thrilled and fortunate to be able to have shows this summer. “We are thrilled with the responses to our show so far this summer and appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we practice social distancing and limit capacity at the theatre in 2020,” according to the company’s Facebook page. “There truly isn’t a bad seat in the house with empty seats on both sides, in front and behind each family.” “It has been a blessing to be able to escape reality and spread the joy of entertainment each and every night thanks to you, our wonderful audience members. We look forward to seeing you yet this season.” Sawing Shannon in half doesn’t sound right,
as that would constitute killing someone in real life, but in the illusion world, the possibilities of stretching the imagination are endless. From disappearing acts to suspension of the mind, Crist brings a sense of humor and fun to his act. Shows during the summer season were running seven days per week. The theater remains open year-round with season schedules Crist says social distancing is working well, and people are very respectful of each other. “Most of our audience members are tourists who are staying at the area resorts as well as locals within an hour drive of Lake Geneva,” Crist said. “We are proud to be the No. 1 Lake Geneva attraction and ‘Thing To Do’ on Trip Advisor for five consecutive years. It is an honor to have become a major part of the Lake Geneva tourist experience with many repeat guests coming back year after year.” Crist has managed to still do what he loves, and provide a nice distraction during these uncertain times. “This year more than ever live entertainment is an escape from the problems of everyday life,” Crist said. Remember empty toilet paper shelves was an issue when the COVID-19 pandemic started? Well, it’s not just a funny Facebook meme. “Our biggest challenge in 2020 has been purchasing toilet paper. No joke!” Crist said. “With shows running every night we have had to search far and wide to keep it in stock.”

TRIO RESTORES, SELLS VINTAGE ITEMS IN NEW SHOP by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Inside a property in downtown Burlington, customers can find a trove of treasures – Arcadian Treasures. Arcadian Treasures, 256 E. Chestnut Street, is operated by three business partners who decided to open shop this spring. Jeremy Zurek, one of three co-owners, said Arcadian Treasures has a goal of restoring vintage and unique items to reclaim their identity and bring them back to life. “We take pieces that need love, and we give them the love they need so they stay out of the landfill,” he said. “We are big on upcycling.” Zurek joined the partnership with Derek Becker and Linnea Kurowski as a hobby. The hobby includes creating custom wood pieces and crafting lithopanes using old photos from customers. “I have always been a metal worker, not by trade, but by hobby, and so it appealed to me,” he said. “It is something that I love to do.” Zurek reports the establishment started with barn sales at Kurowski’s home before the trio decided to open a brick and mortar store in the downtown area. Becker said Arcadian Treasures initially planned for a spring opening before the
COVID-19 pandemic struck the area and caused a delay. “We wanted to open in April, but that didn’t happen because of the virus and everything,” said Becker, adding Arcadian Treasurers has been in business for about three months. But the business has been able to move forward in spite of the pandemic. Becker credits the supportive community, customers of Arcadian Treasures, as well as nearby businesses for the continuous flow of traffic. “This community has welcomed us like we have always been here,” he said. “We are doing surprisingly well for what is happening. People are coming in and they are friendly and they are buying stuff that they enjoy.” Arcadian Treasures typically finds inventory through estate sales, auctions, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and from friends, Becker said.

Arcadian Treasures’ three partners each have their own specialty, according to Becker, who said Kurowski possesses strong attention to detail. That includes staging items at the store along with traditional refurbishing. “She really has the eye for staging,” he said. Arcadian Treasurers, which is open four days per week, has a different partner operating the business on different days. “All three of us have full-time jobs, this is our side business,” Becker said. “We take turns running the store, it is a friendship and a partnership.” The three partners, according to Becker, also share a passion for reviving old pieces and often come together for projects. The collaboration only intensifies this Barn boom desire, Becker added. Outdoor dining boosts the allure of Jonathan’s
J
onathan’s on Brick Street in downtown Delavan has been offering outdoor seating for much of the summer in addition to its large, indoor dining room. In an effort to accommodate customers’ preferences for seating and meet social distancing guidelines, reservations are currently required. Upon making a reservation, guests will be asked if they prefer to sit in the dining room, at a high top table, at the bar or outdoors (weather permitting.) Larger groups will be seated at separate tables and the restaurant has implemented a suggested 90-minute dining time. “If you feel you will need more time, please inform us when making your reservation to see if we can accommodate you,” a post about the reservation
requirement states. Staff recommends making reservations well ahead of time and calling earlier in the day – they have someone answering the phone around 11 a.m. – rather than waiting until the busy dinner hour begins at 4:30 p.m. According to Lana Walton, who is on staff at Jonathan’s, the addition of outdoor seating has been well received by customers. “The outdoor seating area has been incredibly popular with all of our customers. They enjoy the fresh air and views of the park and sunsets as they dine,” she said. In addition to tables for eating, Jonathan’s also has a special outdoor waiting area, Walton explained. “A wonderful place to wait for a table

is our padded chairs, which are extremely popular as well,” she said. “They’re comfortable and several rock as well.” She said the crew at Jonathan’s is pleased with how customers and the community have embraced the outdoor space. “We are extremely happy with the community’s response to our new outdoor dining and cocktail space,” Walton said. “We look forward to seeing how the space changes as we move into the fall as well,” she added.

street was dirt but was paved with bricks to keep the circus wagons from sinking into the mud and since it was the only paved street in the city at the time, it became known as Brick Street. At one point, the building Jonathan’s is in was set to be condemned. “But with the vision of Debra Alder and her husband Jeff Scherer, they transformed it into one of the most enticing restaurant spaces in the area,” it states on Jonathan’s website. Brick walls adorn three rooms, consisting of a retail wine and cheese tasting area, a large granite bar and another room for fine dining. Additionally, the main dining room is available for private lunchtime parties or business meetings for 20 to 60 guests. The philosophy at the restaurant is simple. “Come as you are, and be catered to your every culinary desire,” it states. Jonathan’s features local organic farm produce when available along with locally sourced, fresh lamb from Delavan’s own Pinn Oaks Farm. When it comes to steaks, they select USDA choice or higher-grade Angus Midwestern beef and then cuts all of the steaks in-house. The chef said he believes in offering elegantly presented plates that are both delicious and affordable. “We price structure our menu under the big city steak and seafood houses to give even the budget-minded customers the ability to experience fine dining without breaking the bank,” it states. Jonathan has a longstanding history in the restaurant industry working in various country clubs, golf courses, yacht clubs and fine dining restaurants since he was a
teenager. The restaurant is his first stand-alone venture “and with your support it will be a long-lasting dining destination for Delavan,” the website states. “We look forward to serving you… with a warm welcome and delicious food.” Jonathan’s also features live music regularly.
Many menu options The menu features many options including: appetizers – blackened sashimi grade tuna and smoked lox bruschetta; entrée salads – Asian sesame seared ahi tuna salad and cranberry chicken walnut salad; butcher’s block – chicken breast a la Oscar and Australian lamb loin; seafood – cashew encrusted halibut, monk fish picatta style and Florida grouper. Jonathan’s has fish flown in three times
a week. Friday fish fry options include broiled or fried beer battered blue gill, walleye and Great Lakes whitefish. It also offers Wisconsin’s customary Friday special featuring beer battered Icelandic cod or baked Poorman’s cod. On Saturday nights, the restaurant features prime rib. And all of the desserts are created in house and include a variety of decadent options. Jonathan’s on Brick Street is at 116 E. Walworth Ave. in downtown Delavan. The hours are Sunday through Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 4 to 10 p.m. Dining begins at 4:30 p.m. daily and take out and curbside delivery are also available. Local wineries, shops offer a wide variety of inviting choices Wine and autumn go together like, well, crisp cool nights and warm, sunny days. And many times that pairing is accompanied by comforting thoughts of hearty breads and savory cheeses – perhaps in front a fireplace with a special someone. When it comes to wine, a multitude of options exist in the Geneva Lakes area for the wine connoisseur. In addition to the wide variety of fruit wines found at the Apple Barn, you can tour the vineyard and production facilities at Staller Estates Winery or sample perry – a hard cider made from pears – which is available at ÆppelTreow Winery and Distillery outside Burlington. Here’s a closer look at the area’s wineries:
Apple Barn Orchard and Winery The Apple Barn, in Elkhorn, has been a favorite of customers for many years. Six generations of the Jacobson family have made their home on this land and continue the family tradition of farming the land and caring for their fruit orchards. “The original family members arrived in this area from Oslo, Norway, in 1846,” the Apple Barn’s Judy Jacobson said. “Along with other members of the Norwegian community who settled here, they helped build the local church – still standing just down the road – and built a cheese factory. While involved in these community activities, they also began the hard work of turning this land into a productive farm.” Judy Jacobson and her husband, Steve, are the current generation of the family to successfully farm the land and operate the Apple Barn retail store. They were successful and with each generation increased both the crops grown and the variety of apple trees in their
orchards. The apple orchards matured and produced top quality apples. They have continued to be a full-time farm, planting more than 400 acres of field corn, soybeans and other crops in addition to the variety of fruit trees in the orchards. Around 2004, the Jacobson’s introduced a new product that has become one of their most popular. “In the 1990s, my husband, Steve, began experimenting with wine making after he received a home wine-making kit from his mother as a gift,” Judy Jacobson said. “As he experimented with making wines,

he turned from making grape wines to experimenting with other fruit wines. As he became more interested in the various types of wine that he produced, we considered making a few wines to sell on site at the Apple Barn.” After a long process, they received approval from the State of Wisconsin and began to produce fruit wines on site. What began as a hobby, then moved on to a small addition to the business. It didn’t stop there as the Apple Barn is now producing 13 varieties of wine. The wines are made from fruits, but not traditional grapes. Instead they use a variety of fresh fruits such as strawberries, apples, rhubarb, pears, and cranberries. While most people assume that these fruit wines would all be sweet, they are not “Our wines range from dry to sweet,” Jacobson said. “Most of the wines are in

All factors considered When it is time to work on the patio, there is much to consider. It is a family gathering area and may be composed of several different spaces in use for different members of the family at different times of the day. The designers keep in mind the desired use and how the sun affects it. Is there a need for a shaded space that can be created through the use of a pergola? Or is there a need for additional trees and shrubs for shade or privacy? “Customers should consider the amount of maintenance desired,” Reesman said. “Do you want to be hands off with low-maintenance or do you have a green thumb and enjoy interacting with your space more? When replacing or adding new plants and shrubbery, be certain that they are healthy, appropriate for the area, and top quality. “Right now, there is a shortage of nursery stock due to the high demand this year,” said Reesman. “So some of the plants or shrubs you may desire may not be available now.”

It features all of the hits you loved growing up – ice cream, candy bars, candy cigarettes, saltwater taffy. But Something Sweet in Lake Geneva isn’t your average one-stop sugar shop. In these unprecedented times, where COVID-19 is affecting the way businesses operate, Something Sweet has adapted to the demand of the market. Deemed nonessential back in March, the store, which is located on the corner of Townline Road and Wells Street in the city of Lake Geneva, had to close for three weeks. So co-owners Kristin Carlson-Dooley and Mike Hillstrand had to improvise.

“Coronavirus actually helped us,” Hillstrand said. “We became essential via curbside pickup. We bought masks from a local apparel manufacturer and sold them to the public, and it’s still going on. Everybody knows about it.” Instead of simply providing all their goodies with curbside pickup in April, PFI Fashions in Genoa City partnered with Something Sweet, and Hillstrand and Carlson-Dooley, who were still selling masks in August.

While the sale of masks help during the shutdown, the place still lives off its bread and butter. “Locals don’t want to go downtown in the summer,” Hillstrand said. “Dairy Queen closed about four years ago, so we took the opportunity to give locals a place to go that wasn’t downtown with free parking and outdoor seating.” “We have 50-plus flavors of saltwater taffy, ice cream, candy, bubble gum cigarettes, Laffy Taffy, along with sour candy, hand-dipped ice cream, shakes, malts and Dole Whip.” Carlson-Dooley, who is from Lake Geneva, has been in the sweets business for three decades, as the 46-year-old’s family owns Candy Cove, Sweet 16 and K.C. Sweets, which all are located inside the Riviera.
Hillstrand, 49, a Twin Lakes native, says he is the main person on-site at Something Sweet, while Carlson-Dooley spends half her time at her Riviera businesses and half at Something Sweet. “It was a great way to keep the family together and doing things,” Hillstrand said about starting Something Sweet. Hillstrand says roughly 70 percent of business comes from locals and people who “summer,” or own second homes, in the Lake Geneva area. They also get traffic from the surrounding areas, as people visiting Lake Geneva for the day or weekend stumble upon their store. “Word of mouth spreads,” Hillstrand said. “Business from all over allows us to stay open year-round. We are the highest-running tenant in 12 years.”

There has been a beauty salon, running company and photography studio in the store in the past decade. Since Something Sweet isn’t downtown, it doesn’t have the luxury of potential
customers constantly walking by. But ice cream, candy and salt-water taffy are best sellers, and Hillstrand said the business offers corporate gift baskets and boxes and displays for events. “We have a great, small staff, and we know our customers on a firstname basis,” Hillstrand said. “It’s a fun, small, fully-packed experience. There are games outside for the kids, while parents chat.” Something Sweet has outdoor picnic tables on a deck and chairs in a large yard. During Memorial Day weekend, they opened their doors to the public, and it’s been busy since. The store has social distancing rules and limits traffic to two or three families inside at once. In terms of the future, Hillstrand said people are still buying masks, which he says are “not going away any time soon.” It sounds like Something Sweet is here to stay. “I’m very confident the business will grow and succeed into the future,” Hillstrand said.
