A great sight A hungry great egret snatches a fish from the White River near the Echo Lake dam in Burlington. The birds, best known as the symbol of the National Audubon Society, have become plentiful in the area and often attract interested bird watchers and photographers. You’ll have to move quick to catch a glimpse of the majestic birds because they migrate south in late summer and early fall. festival celebrates 25 years

Thousands have gathered from near and far for the celebration that happens during the second weekend in September at East Troy Village Square Park. This year the gathering will be extra special as the East Troy Bluegrass Festival celebrates 25 years on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day Now considered one of the top bluegrass events in the region, the East Troy Bluegrass Festival was started from scratch back in 1994, and today (along with the famous Alpine Valley Music Theatre) is credited for making music deeply rooted in the local SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
community. The festival morphed out of founder Melissa Sherman’s love for bluegrass music. “It started because I’m a bluegrasser,” Sherman said. With help from local bluegrass musicians Lee and Barb Lorentz, who she lovingly calls “Dad” and “Mom,” and Linnea Loesch, who served on the Village of East Troy Parks and Recreation Committee at the time, Sherman held the first event, then called East Troy’s Bluegrass Funfest. Sherman, who was drawn into Bluegrass as a young girl, wanted to hold her own festival after she found that running her business Melissa’s Country Baskets and a Touch of Heart in East Troy left her little time

to jam on her guitar and upright bass and go to bluegrass shows. That changed when Milwaukee resident and fiddle player John Losiniecki came into her store and chatted about how the Village Square would be a nice spot to play bluegrass. “I was fresh off having three kids and I missed the music,” Sherman said. “I decided to bring bluegrass to East Troy. I thought it was a perfect place for a little bluegrass festival.” Sherman followed through with her idea by raising money for prizes and asking her friends who were in bands to play for nothing. Today, the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored event isn’t so small and is slowly and surely becoming a fixture in the regional and national bluegrass festival scene. Dedicated crowds have increased from less than 200 the first weekend to more than 2,000 attendees expected for the festival’s 25th anniversary event. Sherman said the third annual event put the East Troy Bluegrass Festival on the map when a private donation brought in the “Doctor of Bluegrass” Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys. The performance set high standards for the festival and

Although many events, circumstances and key individuals influenced the development of the genre, there are certain fundamentals agreed upon by most bluegrass music enthusiasts. “It’s down home music with no drums and no amplification,” said Melissa Sherman, East Troy Bluegrass Festival founder and artistic director. The main bluegrass instruments are the guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, dobro and upright bass. Bluegrass is a derivative of country music and began after World War II. Its roots go back to 1600, and are attributed to early American settlers to the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky and the Virginias who composed songs about day-to-day life on the farm and hills, according to the International Bluegrass Music Association. After popular country duet the Monroe Brothers split and formed their own bands, bluegrass got its start. Bill Monroe’s band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, along with Earl Scruggs, with a three-finger picking style on the banjo, are credited for shaping the genre.

Sherman has worked to increase the quality of the bands each year. “We had to up the ante and come up with the money to get somebody as good as him,” she said. Sherman, who currently serves as artistic director, has been successful in hiring headliners for each subsequent event. Many top artists have graced the East Troy stage through the years, including Bobby Osborne, J.D. Crowe and Jim and Jesse McReynolds. This year’s headliners include Carson Peters & Iron Mountain and Volume 5. Staying true to the festival’s roots, local, emerging and popular regional bands will pepper each day’s lineup. Staying true to blue The East Troy Bluegrass Festival continues because of the generosity of local sponsors with many key volunteers contributing over the years. Robin Hudec joined on as co-chair of the festival in 2002 after Sherman moved to Canada where she composes award-winning bluegrass music. Unlike larger music festivals, the event showcases local food and entertainment while keeping costs down for attendees. Sherman said there have been a few pop culture occurrences that have sparked more interest in bluegrass through the years. The genre’s fast tempos and high vocals hit the mainstream with the Coen Brothers’ 2000 film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and triple platinum selling soundtrack. Sherman said celebrity banjo player Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers have also given bluegrass a huge amount of press. She said this type of growth in popularity helps attract younger fans to the music, which usually has

The lowdown In addition to the musical entertainment, other festival highlights include a popular food court featuring local fare and a Marketplace featuring local crafters, artisans and farmers market vendors. Admission is $10 per person. Children 15 and younger are admitted free. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. No alcohol is allowed at this family event. Old World Wisconsin is bringing back its Wisconsin Journey program this fall. The 90-minute guided tour explores the lives of immigrants who journeyed from Sweden to Wisconsin. After a pilot season last summer, the second season of the tour will run Tuesdays through Fridays from Sept. 4 through Oct. 12. Tours leave from the main office at 10 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Old World Wisconsin in Eagle is an outdoor museum with more than 60 historic structures. Tours offer an interactive experience of settler’s life, with docents dressed in period accurate clothes and heritage animals running around the grounds. Wisconsin Journey is a three-part tour, bringing guests to a 1890s Danish homestead, a 1910s Finnish farm and the Harmony Township Hall. At each of these locations, a group of no more than 16 guests has the opportunity to problem solve, interact with historic buildings and learn about a group of real settlers who made the trek to Wisconsin. “This is an extension of what Old World

The tour is only offered to adults, 18 and older. “In the past, the audiences sometimes clashed on tours that had both adults and kids on fieldtrips. Now we have the option of different tours for different groups of people,” Freas said. Wisconsin Journey follows the story of a group of Swedish immigrants who departed for the United States in 1843. The leader of the pack, Thure Kumlien, convinced his group of immigrants to move to Lake Koshkonong, WI. Kumlien, fascinated with nature and birds, spotted this location in a North America nature guide. Before the tour begins, each visitor is assigned to a person who traveled with Kumlien. Along the way, guests receive
information about their lives and census records; this helps relate that these are real people who made Wisconsin their home in the late 1800s. In the research process for the Wisconsin Journey, the daunting task was set out to find a well-documented family who had come to Wisconsin. Other strict guidelines were set in choosing a group of settlers. “Last summer, a wonderful intern found the name Toure Kumlien. I had never heard of him, but I live a mile away from Hoard Historical Museum that has all of his biological work and journals. It all fell together,” Assistant Director Anna Altschwager said. The tour discusses immigration and citizenship, a hot topic in 2018. “Experiential instructors are trained to bridge controversy and make it productive,” Altschwager said. Challenge cards are handed out,
recounting real events that happened to this group of settlers. One family lost three children and the guests were prompted to consider how the family would have paid for a burial and a coffin. One woman offered that they could sell the oxen team that their documents showed the family owned. Critical thinking conversations make the Wisconsin Journey a “living history,” as Freas calls it. “We want it to be about inquiry, curiosity and play. It’s about humans, history and stories. We had about 4,000 people that first year,” Lancour said. Like many Oktoberfests, Old Settlers largely revolves around the families of the area. “My favorite thing is the community involvement. I see a lot of the same faces each year; it’s become an institution in the community. We’re very family oriented and kid friendly. We have no parking fees or admission. That makes it more of a family event,” Lancour said. Elkhorn Oktoberfest, another area celebration, will take place on Oct. 20. Because this happens slowly, it often goes unnoticed by homeowners until one day it really pops and they realize something needs to be done. So where does one start? Is it necessary to remove the tile and start over? Not necessarily, but it is time to call Grout Experts. me,” Ferrara said. He added the grout business is a growing field as homeowners are often opting to repair rather than replace. Ferrara said the business had become somewhat a lost art, because contractors encouraged people to replace rather than to do the tedious work of re-grouting or cleaning the tiles. Replacing an entire bathroom is costly, often in the $20,000 range depending on the quality one wants to put into the room. “That isn’t a cost many families can handle in today’s economy,” Ferrara said. So calling on Grout Experts might be the answer. “A shower that would cost $2300 to replace can usually be re-caulked and grouted for around $500 making it look like new and pleasing the family and their budget,” Ferrara explained. For many the need to “spiff up” the grout often occurs when preparing for a big event such as a wedding, family reunion, or putting the home up for sale. Mold, mildew or chipped tiles are red flags for homebuyers when considering a property. Often the realtor will want the homeowner to replace floors, wall tiles, and even tubs and showers. Ferrara said Grout Experts can fix whatever is there and make it look brand new by re-grouting and caulking. Repairing the tiles To clean grout, they begin by using a steam machine to remove the dirt, mildew or lime scale that has collected over the years. In areas with well water the high level of scale builds up fast. Once that is removed the grout can be inspected to see what if any repairs need to be made. If it is in good condition it can just be resealed to protect it against future discoloration, staining and dirt. But if it is not in good condition, it may need to be replaced. Grout Experts use environmentally friendly products that are safe for both family and pets. There was a time when grout was grout and there were no choices in colors, but now grout comes in a variety of colors to compliment the tiles. Choosing a new color
for the grout can result in an entire new look for the bathroom or kitchen. Color sealing will give the grout a new look and protect it from discoloration. With about 40 different colors ranging from bright white through a variety of shades of off whites, shades of gray, terra cotta, and ending with their darkest color, midnight black, there is sure to be a color to complement the existing tile. Sometimes if the grout is in really poor shape it needs to be removed and replaced. It can be just a small area on the floor, a complete countertop or shower, but whatever the size the technicians will do their best to make a match. Once the new grout is in and sealed the new look will be completed. From May to October, the backyard beckons with its view of the surrounding nature and relaxed atmosphere. In the Lake Geneva area, where many homes border on a water view, having a beautiful space to enjoy the splendor of the lake is often a desired amenity. Many of today’s homeowners do not want just a small outside patio but rather an elegant space that continues the style of the home, creating a spacious place to entertain and enjoy. Outdoor spaces, just as the interior of a home, require care and maintenance. Now, as summertime is slowly turning into fall, it may be time to re-evaluate that outdoor space. Mike and Mary McNulty opened Stonetree Landscapes in Woodstock, Illinois, in 2004. “We started as a garden center selling
trees, mulch and stone,” Mary McNulty said. “It did not take long before we branched out into a full landscape business.” Mary McNulty said it was an easy step to move into the design and installation of not just the plants and trees but to install the driveways, patios, retaining walls and other outdoor décor. “We work with builders and landscape architects and individual home owners to provide the look that best complements the style of the home and the property. Much of our work is in the Lake Geneva area, about 90 percent of it. But we cover both residential and commercial properties in other areas including Southern Wisconsin and Northwest Chicago land,” Mary McNulty said.

The 37-year-old Cedar Dale Pet Resort in Genoa City has undergone renovations with the goal of providing the utmost care for pets. The renovations include a $100,000 renovation of the grooming room, remodeling of the front desk area and kitchen, two new chain-link fenced yards, four turf yards, new fencing, siding and Everson holds her two dogs. Jaxon (left) is 14 and is the first dog Kelly ever bought. Azza (right) is 1 and was fostered as part of the International Street Dog Foundation.

park-like feel. The resort offers pet boarding 365 days of the year, dog day care seven days a week and pet grooming five days a week. The facility can hold 100 guests. During spring break, which is the busiest time of the year for the resort, the facility comes closest to reaching its maximum capacity with the number of the guests usually reaching the 90s. Everson began Cedar Dale Pet Resort in 1981. “I had adopted a rescue dog, and she was the main reason I started this whole thing. I knew I wanted to buy a pet place. I’m from California, and there weren’t any places that I liked there. I also knew I didn’t want a franchise. I ended up picking this place,” Everson said. The pet resort has three full-time groomers, four full-time kennel people and three part-time kennel people. The facility has 24 large dog cages and 24 small dog cages. The business also fosters dogs through the International Street Dog Foundation. Over the years, the pet resort has housed dogs from Thailand, India and Africa. It has taken in eight dogs, a couple of whom have been adopted by workers of the resort. Near the entrance to Cedar Dale Pet Resort, a new billboard features the face of one of Everson’s original foster dogs. Though the facility usually takes care of dogs and cats, Everson described a more unusual guest. “Occasionally we get chinchillas. They stayed in the cat room while they were here. Guinea pigs too,” Everson said. Everson has two dogs of her own. One-year old Azza was taken in as part of the International Street Dog Foundation. Her first dog Jaxon is now 14 years old. “Jaxon loves the other dogs, but he knows that he lives upstairs. Sometimes he looks down on the fences and wants to play. We also have an office cat. It’s perfect, because she greets customers and knows which dogs are friendly to say hello to,” Everson said. “Our professionally designed boarding facility offers spacious indoor and outdoor enclosures that are climate controlled for warmth in the winter and cool comfort in the summer,” the pet resort’s website states. program at Lauderdale Lakes. “Naturally, we thought about reaching out to the Lutherdale Bible Camp since the venue has everything we would need. They were very supportive of what we were trying to do,” Zbrzezny said. They were welcomed with open arms, and as a result, Watersports Wednesdays is now held along Lutherdale’s lakefront. The program also relies heavily on volunteers. “Our volunteers are a big part of what we do, and it takes roughly 20 individuals to make this happen,” Zbrzezny said. “Julie has done a great job involving lake residents who donate their time, boats, personal watercraft and even help prepare food for the groups.”

It was really great,” Corbett said. Zbrzezny said in addition to Lauderdale Lakes area residents, the program boasts volunteers who travel up to two hours from Illinois to be part of the program. Adding to the excitement of the program’s growth, Zbrzezny said a new partnership with The Boathouse of Chicago will be providing ski

boats for future programming. Each program features participants from various groups, hospitals and organizations. “We work with individuals with physical disabilities and primarily disabled veterans, so there is always a VA attending this program with either a spinal cord injury unit, blind unit or outpatient unit with their recreational therapist,” Zbrzezny said. The VAs that have participated this summer include Jesse Brown VA, Chicago; Hines VA, Chicago; and Clement Zablocki VA, Milwaukee. Other groups taking part in Adaptive Adventures in Lauderdale Lakes include Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Synergy Adaptive Athletics and Lincolnway Special Recreation Association. Independent, local residents have also participated at this summer’s events, Zbrzezny said.
How you can help
The adaptive waterski program is one of the only ones not funded through grants, so it’s difficult to sustain, according to Zbrzezny. “We have started a fundraising campaign in hopes of raising $30,000 for new equipment and resources to continue the program at Lauderdale Lakes,” he said. A fundraiser will be held Sept. 27 from 3 to 9 p.m. at Lauderdale Landing, W5625 Westshore Dr. in Elkhorn. “We’ll have a kayak race and a corn hole tournament along with raffles and great food,” Zbrzezny said. The final program for this summer at Lutherdale was held on Aug. 22. To further support Adaptive Adventures, individual donations as well as corporate sponsorships are accepted, and there is an ongoing need for volunteers – details can be found on the website. A Man of Teacher creates connections in school music programs

and director, captain, trumpet player, father and husband are all titles of Lake Geneva resident Greg Bunge. Bunge has been playing the trumpet for the majority of his life. He began playing in fourth grade. “To be honest, at first I thought I was going to be a saxophone player. I went to an instrument demonstration and was disappointed by the saxophone. Instantly, I was able to play the trumpet mouthpiece better than the guy who was demonstrating it! He told me that I was a natural trumpet player,” Bunge said. As a sixth grader, Bunge was busy playing high school level music. Though he possesses a natural skill at music, Bunge is humble and rarely discusses his accomplishments. “I guess that’s when I realized I was pretty decent,” Bunge said. He received his Bachelor of Music Education from University of Arizona. After following a former professor to Illinois to be a graduate assistant, Bunge got his master’s degree from Illinois State University in 1991. He lived in Illinois for three years while maintaining jobs in the Lake Geneva area. Bunge has been a band director at Badger High School since 1995 and has been a captain on the Lake Geneva Cruise Line since 1996. He finally moved to Lake Geneva in 1999. At Badger High School, Bunge directs three concert bands and three jazz bands. Because of the intensity level of the music, many of the bands have organized practices not only during school hours, but later at night after sports’ practices get out as well. After 23 years at Badger, Bunge is

continually able to create moments in the classroom that keep him and his students excited about music. “What keeps me ticking are the relationships where kids come back and thank me or want to play music together. Through music, we make lifelong friendships and eventually can become colleagues,” Bunge said. As a director, he has little moments of inspiration scattered throughout each school day. “When the band plays really heartfelt and SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
you can tell they put their soul into it; those are goose bumps moments. When you get those moments, you have to bottle them up and save them,” Bunge said. Several of Bunge’s former students have saved these memories and fondly look back on their time in the bands. “His passion for what he does is undeniable. He was constantly pushing the band to be the best they can be. While this was demanding at times, it taught hard work and discipline. He was always sure to be proud of every student, no matter their skill

level,” said Eric Schirtzinger, a former student and drummer. Other students echoed similar sentiments. After getting into some trouble in high school, former student and trombone player David Ayala described how Bunge helped him turn his life around. “One day, I walked into Greg’s office with the intent of quitting band. Nine months later, I was practicing five hours a day. To this day, I’m still convinced that without Greg Bunge, that sad boy would be incarcerated right now,” Ayala said. “He is so deeply passionate about what he does that he works around the clock and through the summer to further the music program,” Ayala said. Bunge and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter named Elizabeth who will be a junior at Badger High School in the fall. A lover of instruments like her dad, she plays bass and French horn. Elizabeth’s dad is her band director in the jazz ensemble and the wind ensemble. Both of these are the highest of the three band levels, which Bunge compares to “freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.” Many of the lessons that Bunge teaches in the band room are applicable to everyday life. After discussing an improvisation lesson that Bunge taught him, former student and multi-instrumentalist Nick Pedraza said,
“This doesn’t just apply to jazz, but to life as a whole. If you approach whatever you do with honesty and conviction, people will listen and care.” When Bunge is not conducting bands, he plays jazz gigs on trumpet with his group, The Jazz Scholars. The group is made up of Craig Olson on drums, Kevin Kazimier on bass, Andy Schultz on piano and Bunge on either trumpet or flugelhorn. Olson and Bunge are both teachers at Badger. Nearly every week, the Jazz Scholars play gigs on a boat at the Lake Geneva Cruise Line called the Grand Belle of the Lake. Playing jazz is one of Bunge’s main passions in life. He is a fan of both traditional and contemporary jazz. “A few of the jazz musicians who inspire me are Winton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins and Oscar Peterson,” Bunge said. During the summers, Bunge is a captain on the Lake Geneva Cruise Line where he drives antique boats. Each year, several of his former students work there as well. “As a captain, I never have the same day twice. People are usually in a good mood when they’re out on the lake. My daughter works here too, which is pretty fun,” Bunge said, as he prepared a boat called the Duchess for a charter trip. When Bunge is not driving boats, conducting bands or playing music, he loves to golf and kayak with his family. He and his

daughter Elizabeth enjoy Brewers games. The family also enjoys going on trips around the county, including return trips to Bunge’s home state of Arizona. Though he spent much of his life in Arizona, Bunge’s involvement in the Lake Geneva area has been crucial in the lives of many of his students. “I see people all the time. My sister nicknamed me ‘mayor,’ because I am always running into people I know. I love living and working in this community.”
