Autumn’s embrace

Area is poised to celebrate the season For an area well known as a summer resort destination, the Geneva Lakes area does not transition to fall with resignation, but with a sense of celebration for the beauty and familiarity of a season of warm comfort. Like the turning of the leaves, the Geneva Lakes area turns to a list of activities that light a fire of autumn adventure for visitors and residents alike each October. Here’s a look at some of the activities available courtesy of Visit Lake Geneva.

SPARKLING WATERS • Geneva Lake Shore Path: This really is a remarkable find – a 21-mile public foot path that follows the shoreline of Geneva Lake, taking walkers into the back lawns of those magnificent mansions built by wealthy Chicagoans as “summer cottages.”

The estates look even more impressive against a backdrop of saturated fall color. • Lake Geneva Cruise Line: Go ahead and pretend you’re a celebrity out on a yacht for a leisurely sightseeing tour of your favorite hidden lake in Europe. That will require no stretch of the imagination on Geneva Lake. • Lake Lawn Queen: Why stop at one lake when you can tour two? Lake Lawn Resort hosts cruises of Delavan Lake aboard the Lake Lawn Queen. • Lake Como: OK, make it three, with an after-dinner cocktail cruise offered by supper club Mars Resort on Lake Como.

GOLF, BIKING, HIKING, PADDLING, ZIPLINING • Golf: Golf floats to the top of the list for outdoor sports, with golf pedigrees in Lake Geneva to impress even the most

discerning golfer. Two 18-hole courses at Grand Geneva Resort present the kind of challenge golfers relish, thanks to the contributions of original designers Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye. At Geneva National Resort, golfers can put their skills to the test on 54 holes of award-winning golf designed by legends Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Lee Trevino. Other area courses of note include Hawks View in Lake Geneva, Evergreen Country Club in Elkhorn, Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, and Brighton Dale Golf Course in nearby Kansasville. • Biking: Avant Cycle Café combines a coffee bar featuring locally roasted brews and a bicycle shop featuring cruiser and e-bike rentals. The coffee roasts are named after cycling routes in the area and the labels include a link to an online route map.

THE WILDS OF WISCONSIN • Safari Lake Geneva: Not a zoo, not a theme park, but a wildlife preserve that is home to animals from around the world. The animals roam free while visitors traverse the grounds “safely caged” in their cars, making for a very enjoyable rolereversal experience. • Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy: This hidden gem in Williams Bay reveals rolling creeks, mirror-like ponds, and lush fall colors to satisfy the senses. Stroll the boardwalk that hovers above the wetland or walk the trails that traverse the 231 acres of forests and prairie. This is the largest watershed on Geneva Lake and presents

Their “a-maze-ing” professionally designed corn maze is huge at 12 acres. • Nearby Apple Orchards: Brightonwoods, in Kansasville, features more than 150 already-picked antique and commercial apple varieties, along with

fresh apple cider. Hafs Road Orchard, Genoa City, specializes in Honeycrisp. Pick a peck of apples at Apple Barn Orchard and Winery, Eklhorn, then stop in the country store and bakery for cider donuts, maple syrup, and local honey.

RAINY DAY PURSUITS • Magic: The Tristan Crist Magic Theatre, Lake Geneva, is home to illusionist Tristan Crist, known for his large-scale illusions performed up close and personal. Also on the calendar through December is guest master magician Brett Daniels, star of network TV specials. • Dancing Horses: Did you see the Olympics dressage equestrian competition with the horses performing to music? See the Lake Geneva version at the Dancing Horses Theatre, Delavan. The 90-minute show is full of pageantry and the performers (both the horses and their trainers) sparkle in rhinestones.

FESTIVALS • Oct. 9-10: Lake Geneva Oktoberfest,

OTHER EVENTS • Lake Geneva Ghost Walks are haunted walking tours of Lake Geneva, with promises of real ghost stories and legends of the lake. Weekends until Halloween. • Paranormal investigators descended on the historic Maxwell Mansion last year on Halloween weekend and declared numerous signs of ghostly activity during their overnight investigation, especially otherworldly goings-on in the Speakeasy tavern. Today’s brides are no longer content to have their wedding celebrated in a cookie cutter banquet hall that lacks beauty and elegance. They are looking for a place that combines the beauty of a natural outdoor setting with an elegant indoor reception venue. Hawk’s View Golf Club is just the place to impress not only the bridal couple but also every guest. From the moment they turn onto the property with its beautiful views that include dramatic changes in elevations and open, rolling grounds on either side of the long meandering

driveway, they experience breathtaking views. Crossing a unique wooden covered bridge adds to the ambience of the setting. As they approach the clubhouse, the beauty of the unique landscaping and an array of blooming flowers that surround the entrance welcomes visitors. The gardens are maintained in continuous bloom from spring through fall assuring beautiful photographs.

Outdoor ceremonies “Today about 90% of our couples have their wedding ceremony performed on site. We have a beautiful outdoor space, known as Overlook Terrace where the ceremonies are held,” said Becky Farber, longtime wedding consultant at Hawk’s View. “It overlooks the open greenery of the golf course, making it a beautiful sight framing the bridal couple and provides a picturesque view for the guests watching the ceremony.” The open-sided Overlook Terrace has a roof to keep guests and the bridal party

Weddings are performed yearround. “We have three different bridal arches which couples can chose from. They include the traditional lattice arch, which is always a favorite. We also have a taller model of the arch and a unique Octagon shaped arch. Or couples are free to bring in their own arch,” said Farber. “Couples decorate the arch to suit their style.” The Overlook Terrace, when set for a wedding ceremony, can seat up to 350 for the service. After the ceremony this space is often used for cocktails and butler-served hors d’oevres.

Flexible accommodations Just as all of us have had changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hawk’s View has experienced changes in its weddings. Some were canceled this past year and others have been rescheduled, sometimes two or three times. Sizes of weddings have also

Each site is unique starting with the Top of the Hill (25 guests) located at the top of the signature golf hole 17 with its sweeping views of the countryside. Hawk’s View Vista (50 guests) provides a backdrop of the 100-year-old barn, which has been on the property since the early 1900s. This scenic view overlooks Barn Hollow golf course. The third intimate outdoor space is in the Wedding Garden (20 guests) amongst the beautiful plants and blooming flowers of the wedding garden.

Food for the event “All food is prepared on site under the direction of Executive Chef Doug Burke. There are a variety of packages to allow the meal to be exactly what the couple wishes. They may choose from a buffet-style dinner or a traditional plated dinner,” added Farber. The plated dinners offer a choice of entrees or the couple may opt for a special plate with two entrees. The buffet includes a chef-carved entrée and a second choice of fish, chicken or a pasta dish. Farber will work with the party to customize a menu for any special food needs. Although the wedding cake is purchased from an outside baker, Farber noted that many couples are pulling away from the

Artist Neal Aspinall’s work has distinctive, but familiar style

While you may not recognize him by name, if you have spent any amount of time in the Lake Geneva area, you have certainly seen his work. He is Neal Aspinall, illustrator and graphic designer who has created posters and logos for many events, landmarks, and businesses in the Lake Geneva area. His work is unique and his style is simple and uncluttered. He draws inspiration from posters of the WPA during the Great Depression and retro-American advertising from the pre-1960s. He loves simplicity in his images and likes for the viewer to fill in the images with his or her own imagination. “You may notice that I like to include objects from the past. For example, if there is a telephone it will not be a modern phone but a black rotary dial phone of the past,” Aspinall said. His colors are vibrant yet he outlines most of his projects with a black frame and often uses a lot of white in the drawing. There are always details in his work to catch the viewer’s eye. A piece he created for the Lake Geneva Water Safety Patrol is one such work that seems to jump off the page. The boat is white with No. 1 in red lettering. Against a background of quiet blue water and massive greenery along the shore, the white wake of the water as the boat speeds along, makes the viewer feel the speed of the boat. Like many of Aspinall’s works there is that unique detail near the shoreline –

The motorcycle is not the latest model with all the bells and whistles but a 1930 model. This Harley piece has been awarded many awards and is still a popular poster.

Finding work

Studying all these fields has proved to be invaluable to Aspinall as his work transcends the lines between illustration, design, advertising and fine art. Pieces of art that he has created for advertising are not just advertising illustrations, but true art. It became necessary to adapt to this method or leave the business,” said Aspinall. Fortunately, he chose to adapt to the new way of doing business and his creative artistic creations continue to flow from him.

Accolades for Aspinall

Over the years, Aspinall has earned many awards for his work. In 2007 he was added to the Colorado Institute of Art Hall of Fame. Among his awards are those from the American Society of Illustrators Annual, Communication Arts Illustration Annual, Graphis Magazine, Print Magazine Design Annual, POPALL Gold Medals (POP Industry) and many more. Aspinall has a local client list of more than 40, so it is not surprising that one seems to see his work everywhere. Because it is so distinctive it is not possible to mistake it for someone else’s work. These local clients include Mars Resort, Keefe Real Estate, the Geneva Lake Museum, the Lake Geneva Country Club, Geneva Lake Water Safety Patrol, Yerkes Observatory, Black Point Historic Preserve, the City of Lake Geneva, Old World Wisconsin, Lake Geneva Winterfest, and Lake Geneva Cruise Line and many more. For the past two years, 2020 and 2021 he was chosen to design the Birkebeiner cross country ski race poster. The Birkie, as it is called informally, is the largest cross country ski race in the country and is held yearly since 1973 with an exception for a year without snow. This cross-country classic ski race from Cable to Hayward covers 34 miles. Being chosen for the Birkebeiner poster two years in a row was another of Neal’s favorite jobs. His national clients include Coca Cola, Macy’s, The Wisconsin State Fair, Dell Ducks Unlimited, Birkenstock, Facebook, Fiskars, Frito Lay, Harley Davidson, YMCA, Honda, Minor League Baseball, National Park Service, Target, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. While this is not anywhere near a full listing of national clients it is a good beginning to begin to understand the scope of Aspinall’s work. Cemetery tour
