There are plenty of opportunities for people to burst with Bavarian pride, even if they are not German, with a handful of Oktoberfest celebrations approaching. Oktoberfest is celebrated worldwide and features Germaninspired food, beverages and several activities. Locally, the area has four Oktoberfest events each fall, with Old Settlers Oktoberfest in September followed by Oktoberfests in Twin Lakes, Lake Geneva and Elkhorn. In Walworth County, the streets of Lake Geneva will host Oktoberfest for two days, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13. “There is something for everyone at this family friendly event – bounce houses, pony rides, craft fair, live entertainment, a free pumpkin giveaway, cider donuts and plenty,” the VisitLakeGeneva. com website declares. The event is held in the heart of downtown Lake Geneva near the 200 block of Broad Street. Food specialties include brats, potato pancakes, and cider donuts. The second annual event features a Hammerschlaggen contest and an opportunity to win up to $1,500 based on how many tickets are sold, a costume contest, music, a beer stein holding contest as well as a scarecrow contest. Elkhorn’s Oktoberfest anticipates more than 100 crafters and vendors showcasing handcrafted items, antiques, produce and plants as well as the annual car show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, Elkhorn will have an enhanced wine and beer-tasting event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pocket Park on Wisconsin Street. Area’s rustic roads showcase autumn’s brilliance By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

One of the best ways to catch the brilliant colors of autumn is a ride along one of the Rustic Roads in the Geneva Lakes Area. How many of us have traveled or even know where Snake Road, South Road, Cranberry Road or Back Road are located and where they lead? These less commonly known roads are a part of the Rustic Road System, which was created by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1973 as a way to preserve some of the scenic, smaller, and less-traveled roads that represent the spirit of Wisconsin’s countryside.

Some history

The first Rustic Road, designated in 1975, was appropriately called Rustic Road 1, and is just north of Medford in the northwest quadrant of the state. Rustic Road 1 crosses through hills and valleys that were created by the last Wisconsin glacier nearly 12,000 years ago. Since that first designation, the number of Rustic Roads has increased to more than 100. The roads cover a total of 665 miles and are found in 59 of the state’s 72 counties. They tend to be short from two miles to a maximum of 37 miles, but most in our area are approximately 6 to 10 miles in length. The roads are marked by brown and yellow signs with an outline of the state and the words Rustic Road. The route itself is designated by a number with an R in front to prevent it being confused with regular state highways. The distance the route covers is also listed.

What qualifies as rustic? In order to qualify as a Rustic Road, there are criteria that must be met. It must

have outstanding natural features along its borders such as rugged terrain, native vegetation, or wildlife. It must be a lightly traveled local access road. It cannot be scheduled for any major improvements, which would change its character. Rustic Roads may be dirt, gravel, or paved and are open to automobiles, motorcycles, bicyclists, and hikers looking for a scenic country ride or walk. Maximum speed limits are 45 miles per hour but local jurisdictions may lower them. Many are posted at 30 mph. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation oversees the rustic roads program but the roads themselves remain under local jurisdiction. It is a partnership between the state and local authorities that focuses on preservation and promotion of

these country roads. A special program for motorcyclists encourages them to travel the Rustic Roads. Those who complete a tour of 10 roads receive a patch. After completion of 25 roads a special state certificate is given. Participants must take a photograph in front of each Rustic Road sign, if riding alone a photograph of the motorcycle will suffice. The photos should be submitted at once and there is no time limit to complete the tour.

In recent years, I’ve visited four of the Rustic Roads in the Geneva Lakes Area. I began with R-29, then made my way to R-12, R-11, and R-36. Each of these is an interesting road, with a rural flavor even though they are just a few miles away

Rustic Road 29

R-29 is on Snake Road, an aptly named road as it twists and wiggles through the countryside. It is accessed in Lake Geneva off of Highway 50. Driving west through town, continue until you pass the visible edge of Geneva Lake and then watch the little side roads very carefully for the small street sign announcing Snake Road. It is easy to pass it as you look onto Snake Road, the Rustic Road sign R-29 is seen on the right side of the road. A paved road, R-29 is 2.7 miles stretching from the intersection of Snake Road with Highway 50 on the western edge of downtown Lake Geneva. It heads west to where it rejoins Highway 50 in the Town of Geneva. This loop of countryside is a place of natural beauty as the road twists and turns and the elevation changes. It is also the most populated of the four roads that I visited both for the houses on the side and the amount of traffic going through. While not a traffic jam, I did see eight to 10 cars and one motorcycle traveling this Rustic Road. The homes along the road are beautiful with well-landscaped lawns. Split rail fencing is found in some areas and, like all the Rustic Roads, the natural vegetation

presents a beautiful sight. Once I rejoined Highway 50, I headed east through Lake Geneva with its busy summertime visitors, passing through the construction area around Highway 12 and continuing to the east watching for the Rustic Road sign along Highway 50 warning of the need to turn.

Rustic Road 12

R-12 begins on Highway 50 with its intersection at Back Road and continues through Sheridan Springs Road, Spring Valley Road and Church Road taking you from Highway 50 to Highway 36 in the Town of Lyons. This Rustic Road is also paved and travels 5.7 miles. This route is somewhat like R-29 in that it squiggles through the countryside with many curves and turns. It is more open with views of rich green hills and valleys and pine and spruce plantations. White fences dot some of the countryside. Views of Kettle Moraine formations, pine and spruce plantations, a tamarack swamp and several ponds can be enjoyed as you travel this route. A beautiful spot to stop and stretch your legs and take in the view is at the White River County Park, which appears suddenly as you round a turn. The huge barn looms larger than life. It is a place to return to on a day with more time to wander the trails. R-12 ends in the quaint community of

Lyons a typical small town in Wisconsin. Lyons is a great place to take a walk and enjoy the small-town flavor of the Wisconsin countryside. The ending of R-12 is near the R-11 Rustic Road and so it was easy to switch to R-11 as I continued on my journey.

Rustic Road 11

R-11 is similar to R-12 in that it links Highway 50 to Highway 36, but the routes are very different. The route is a rectangle as it travels along South Road, Spring Valley Road, Knob Hill Road and Steele Road over paved surfaces for a length of 10.3 miles. Like R-12, there are excellent views of Kettle Moraine topography. It passes through large wooded areas where one can view oak, maple and hickory trees and as well as open agricultural land. On my trip, I was unable to cover the Spring Valley Road section due to road construction. While driving the Steele Road portion of R-11, another decision had to be made. At the intersection with Berndt Road, R-36 joined R-11. Should I continue straight and finish the R-11 route or abandon it for a ride along R-36? The choice was simple, finish R-11 route then turn around and join R-36.

Rustic Road 36

R-36 is a short, but interesting, route. Only 3.6 miles in length, it travels along Berndt Road and Cranberry Road. It is a scenic narrow hilly route that winds through farmland, and glacial marshes. Trees and shrubs are plentiful. Along Cranberry Road I noted several horse farms. Cranberry Road received its name from the early settlers who harvested cranberries from the nearby marshes. As Cranberry Road rejoined Highway 50, I ventured back to the reality of fast roads and traffic after a very relaxing time wandering a few of Wisconsin’s special roads. I have now ridden these roads in spring when the grasses are just beginning to sprout and the trees are beginning to show budding as they awaken for the summer. Now in summer, the green canopies of leaves hang over the road from the trees lining the sides and flowers are in full bloom. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons and I will again drive these routes as the leaves change from

green to the crimson, oranges, and yellows of fall. Lastly, I will travel these roads after a snowfall when everything glistens in the light of newly fallen snow. For many these scenic roads are often the ones not taken. To quote Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken”: “I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” Perhaps a ride on the roads not taken will make a difference in your life as you relax and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of nature instead of fighting the noise, traffic and pollution of the roads more frequently traveled.

ella Vita Banquet and Convention Center offers a beautiful and unique venue that strives to create weddings that are fit for dreams. The venue is in New Munster, although the official address is 34816 Geneva Road, Burlington. While Bella Vita has been at this location for many years, Brian and Heather Boeckenstedt purchased the venue in 2015 from Heather’s father when health issues forced him to retire. “Because of his failing health, Heather’s father was no longer able to keep up the building,” Brian said. “So when we took over we began a major renovation.” Since Brian is a carpenter and cabinet builder, he was able to take on the renovation and has updated and added special features to each of the venue’s three halls. Each room was renovated and updated down to the finest detail. As the business continues to progress, updates and additions are still in the works. With Brian’s excellent carpentry skills each additional feature is always completed to perfection. Each of the three ballrooms is named after members of Heather’s family, who were instrumental in starting the family business. The rooms vary in size and décor giving the bride and groom different options for their wedding.

A hall for all needs

Lorenzo Hall, named for Grandpa Lorenzo is the largest at 6,400 square feet. It has many unique features including a barn wood wall complete with barn doors. On the opposite side of the room is a new industrial brick wall giving the bride and groom the choice of which side of the room to place their head table. It is the only one of the halls to have a sit down bar with glassware and a newly added rustic ceremony space just outside the hall. The room will hold up to 250 guests comfortably. It has a separate niche for the band or DJ also clad in barn wood. As the music is amplified through a state-of-the-art sound system, dancers will head for the dance floor. With many couples choosing a rustic look as their style, this room is perfect for their wedding. A large bridal suite is attached to the Lorenzo room, which

Decorated in soft neutral shades, it is a relaxing space with a large lighted mirror for makeup application and putting those finishing touches on their hair. There is space to relax on the inviting leather sofas. The room is available to the bridal party throughout the evening, giving them a chance to get away, catch their breath and touch up hair and makeup. “There are digital combination locks on all the bridal suite doors to assure privacy for the bride and her bridesmaids,” Brian said.

Grace Hall named for Heather’s Grandma Grace, has a timeless and elegant feel. This room features a walk-up bar and has an attached private bridal suite similar to the one off Lorenzo Hall. There are private restrooms, a large dance floor and a separate entrance on the south side of the building, near the garden where the marriage ceremonies can be held. Grace Hall, at 5,200 square feet, comfortably seats 220 guests. Philomena Hall, named after Heather’s Great Grandma, is a 5,800 square foot room that can comfortably seat 240 guests. Like Lorenzo Hall, it is accessed from the main entrance. There is a walk-up bar and dance floor that can be enjoyed by guests. This room can be combined with the adjacent Grace Hall, for a very large event. Combining the two rooms allows for 600

guests to be accommodated. When the two rooms are opened up for a large event the two bars work together. Uplighting in various colors can also be arranged in any of the rooms for a warm, romantic effect. Projectors and screens are available in every room to feature a slide show of memories with or without sound. Table underskirt lighting, backdrop lighting and centerpiece rental are all available to customize and enhance your wedding.

Book early

Booking the venue to hold your event is the most important first step. “Many of the venues book up quickly, especially at the popular times,” Brian said. “We only book weddings on Saturday so we are limited. Once the three halls are booked for that specific date, we can’t add another wedding.” Once the venue has been chosen, the bridal couple will begin to work out the details. “Today most of our bridal couples choose to hold the wedding ceremony on site,” Brian said. The garden settings at Bella Vita with a wood pergola to frame the couple, the relaxing sound of the waterfall and the beautiful plantings make for a very picturesque wedding. White ceremony chairs are placed on the stamped concrete patio for guests. The popularity of outdoor wedding ceremonies has led Brian to construct another space for ceremonies

on the site. This one is on the north side of the building, off Lorenzo Hall. It features a rustic wedding arch, installed bench seating, a stamped concrete aisle and freshly planted landscaping. A large field of sunflowers will edge the northern side of the venue. A unique feature to this ceremony setting is the large church steeple, which may be seen in the background. A wagon wheel water feature will be added in early 2020.

A family affair

Bella Vita remains a family business with Brian, his wife Heather and their three teenage children, Bryce, Brandon, and Brielle, all hard at work making sure that everything goes as planned. “Heather is in charge of the menu, food and kitchen,” Brian said. “Everything is made from scratch. Many of the items are made using Heather’s family recipes which have been passed down for generations. “We purchase top quality ingredients and our beef is slow cooked in our ovens,” ha added. “To ensure your food is served hot, we have about 15 holding ovens to keep the food warm until it is served.” “All food served on site is prepared here. With the exception of wedding cakes, all the food and beverages must be purchased through Bella Vita. “All alcohol must be purchased at Bella Vita and served by our licensed bartenders,” Brian said. “We have a liquor license and follow Wisconsin law in not serving underage patrons. Some venues that allow bringing in your own liquor do not have a liquor license and may not comply with state law. Our bartenders will refuse service

Kinda Shinto is the club house manager who handles all of the special events held at Abbey Springs. “Most of our bridal couples choose to marry on the shore of Lake Geneva where we have a beautiful bridal ceremony space along the shore,” she said. Shinto who has 35 years experience working at high end venues on the north shore in Chicago knows what is necessary to keep her bridal couples happy. “Our wedding packages are very inclusive and include set up in the room with input from the couple,” she said. “Even the head table can take on a different look from the traditional rectangular table. One unique choice is to choose a heart shaped arrangement. The head table can be placed in various places in the reception room. “We set up the room and include a space for the D.J. or band,” stated Shinto. “We offer a variety of dinner styles, plated, using stations or buffet style. We work with our chef to be sure that everything is as it should be.” “Because we only book one wedding a weekend, there is ample

A timeline of the day is created to be sure that nothing is overlooked,” said Kristin Awne, catering manager for Sperinos. “We treat our wedding guests as guests coming to our home,” she said. “Our goal is for the bridal couple to enjoy every moment and not have to focus on the D.J.’s arrival or on whether the cake arrived intact,” added Kristin. Outside wedding planners are not commonly seen at Sperino’s Monte Carlo Room as most of the bridal couples are happy with the service provided by the venue. The venue, which will seat 300, is different from many of the other area venues. According to Awne, most of the ceremonies are held in churches so they do not have a designated ceremony site. “We are honored to be a part of this memorable day. We treasure this as starting a relationship with the couple as they embark on their new lives. We hope to continue to be part of their lives over the years as they return for their anniversary dinners and perhaps the baptism of their children.”

The opening of Soul-ful Moon Journey in Twin Lakes last May was the fulfillment of a dream for owner Kim Hill. Relocating from California in December 2018, she was looking for a space to turn her online business into a space where she could work face-to-face with people. “In California I had an online business where we sold custom healing crystal bracelets, herbal supplements and gift jewelry to help people on their journey to spirituality and healing,” owner Kim Hill said. “We also had an event space where we held events that would introduce people to various ways of bringing health and spirituality into their lives. Kim became more interested in holistic medicine and spirituality after caring

for her mother as she was dying from the complications of diabetes. Her mother lost her sight and had amputations of her lower limbs. “I was told that I was borderline for diabetes while caring for my mother,” she said. “By the time she passed away I had full-blown diabetes and was taking nine pharmaceutical drugs including insulin each day to try to control the diabetes. “I was only 37 years old and could see myself ending up like my mother.” So Kim began to research what she could do to improve her health. “I went to see an herbalist and began a strict six-month regime of recommended herbs. I was also introduced to ionic detoxifying foot baths.” When she returned to her endocrinologist her diabetes was under such good control that she was able to discontinue her medications. Seeing how her own health had improved with her journey into spirituality and wellness, her goal was to help other achieve the same results.

And in addition to that, the bracelets are attractive. During a recent visit, Hill was wearing a pendant of lapis lazuli, a deep blue stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. It was paired with a mother of pearl stone which made the blue of the lapis appear even a more intense when placed next to the contrasting white of the pearl. Lapis, according to Dena Prestininzi, who works with Hill, is known for its effect on the thyroid gland, the lymphatic system, and the respiratory system. It is also said to relieve stress and inspire confidence.

At the herbalist she learned about the Ionic detox footbath. For those unfamiliar with the detox footbath, the purpose is to rid the body of toxic contaminants that have been absorbed. These contaminants may be absorbed through makeup, toothpaste, medications, and even some foods and other sources.
