For festival fans Lake Geneva’s Oktoberfest, Oct. 6 and 7, is a family friendly event with live entertainment, a free pumpkin giveaway, bounce houses, pony rides, cider donuts, a craft fair, a beer tent featuring Hoffbrau brews, and even a Stein holding competition. Lake Lawn Resort’s Fall Family Festival, Oct. 5 to 8, also offers fall themed food, music and activities. Lake Geneva Canopy Tours Pumpkin Drop and Fall Festival, Oct. 27 and 28, promises plenty of action, adventure and entertainment as participants zoom down a 1,200-foot racing zipline with pumpkin in hand to aim at a large bulls eye target below.

As the summer fades into fall, at trip out to the apple orchard or winery is in order. To many, the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of the changing season is to meander through the countryside to visit the apple orchards and wineries of the area to taste the latest locally made wines, ciders and liquors. Each of the places listed here produce award-winning wines or ciders and are easily reached from the Lake Geneva area. The owners of all three businesses began producing small batches of their wines as a hobby and as their interest and experience in producing these wines increased their products became award winners. Take the time to enjoy the fine, traditional grape wines, the variety of fruit wines and hard ciders and even some unique distilled spirits produced locally. Owned by Wendy and Joe Staller, the vineyard is the fulfillment of a dream that dates back to their college days while at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater studying biology and chemistry. “Joe began doing some home brewing of beer for a class project, one that he transformed into a recipe large enough for Randy’s Restaurant in Whitewater, where he was serving an internship. This resulted in his being offered a job as a brewer for the restaurant,” Wendy Staller said. Meanwhile Wendy began experimenting with wine making and went on to the University of California-Davis to learn more about the craft. “Neither of us had ever lived or worked on a farm,” Joe said. Somehow the dream of living on an old dairy farm, raising a vineyard and producing wines was to become a reality. Wendy began entering competitions with her wines and they were winning the competitions. Laughingly Wendy described it as “A hobby out of control.” They began with an old pole building on the property and transformed it into a place to create their wines and open a venue where visitors could share an educational wine experience. “The building had dirt floors and open trusses and so needed a large amount of work to make it usable,” Wendy said. Today it is a warm and welcoming space that houses a gift shop that includes wines and items geared to wine, a tasting bar and a large room overlooking the vineyard – a place to enjoy some wine and cheese, or to hold a private party. In the rear of the building is the wine making facility where all Staller Estate wines are produced. “All our wines are made on site,” Joe

said. “As many as possible are made with grapes grown here at the vineyard, but our vines are still young and we don’t have enough to produce all the wine. We only use winter-hardy grapes that would grow in the Wisconsin weather.” The Stallers are working on enlarging their vineyard but it takes about 5 years before the grapes are mature enough to be

used for wine. Joe said European wines are considered to be so good because they use the grapes that grow best in the region such as the Bordeaux wines that grow in the Bordeaux area while Champagne is produced in the Champagne area of France. “That is why we only use winter-hardy vines that will grow well here in Wisconsin. We are not just growing grapes but growing wine,” Joe said. Staller Estate now offers 15 varieties of wine. From dry whites and reds to sweeter tasting wines there is one that will appeal to any palate. One of the advantages of coming to a vineyard is to be able to taste the wines before buying. How often does one go to the store and pick up a bottle or two of wine only to be disappointed when it is opened? Most of the Staller Estate wines range in price from $10.95 to $16.95 but there is one wine that sells for $46.95. The wine is called Ice Wine and is so called because it is made from grapes that have been allowed to remain on the vines until frozen and harvested when the temperature is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Once harvested, they are crushed and pressed while still frozen. All the tours are given by Wendy or Joe who take visitors through the wine making process from grape growing to the final bottled product. Tours can be scheduled online. Visitors can purchase one of the European picnics or a cheese plate to enjoy with some wine and enjoy a picnic out in the vineyard or indoors overlooking the vines. Staller Estate also offers painting classes, paint parties and special farm-to-table dinners several times a year. The dinners are created by Chef Tyler Sailsbery from The Black Sheep restaurant in Whitewater. The five-course dinner is paired with six different wines and always sells out so watch the website for tickets. receiving approval from the state. That was a long process,” Judy Jacobson said. “The wine began as a sideline for we are a full time farm, planting over 400 acres of field corn, soy beans and other crops in addition to our fruit tree orchards.” Six generations of Jacobsons have farmed this land since arriving from Oslo, Norway in 1846. “The original family members, working with other new settlers built the Church just down the road and a cheese factory while they began the hard work of turning the land into a productive farm,” Judy said. While Steve continues to be passionate about wine making, he no longer has the time to continue making the wines because of farming the land and tending to the orchards, so he hired a master winemaker, Jake Drefs, to craft the wines. Ciders are made from apples and are pressed here. The pressings continue through January. Fall seems to be the time when people think of enjoying cider as a harvest drink. As the weather cools down, warm cider, especially spiced cider and warm mulled wines, are very comforting. Specializing in fruit wines made from a variety of fruits and berries, but not grapes, the wines are fermented in small batches to ensure top quality. Surprising to many people who think of fruit wines as being very sweet, the wines produced at the Apple Barn range from dry to sweet, Judy Jacobson said. “Most of our wines are in the semi-sweet range. They also do not contain enhancements or coloring,” she said. Making the wines is an all-year process that begins when the fruits are ripe then continues as the fruit ferments over the winter. “The wine is now being bottled from last year’s harvest,” Judy said. Apple Barn has a unique label that allows for changes in the picture on the front. “I have a collection of antique postcards from the area that we are able to reproduce on the labels. One of our favorite labels is the one that is labeled as ‘Mystery Wine,’” Judy said. “Consider serving the Mystery Wine and have your guests try to figure out what type of wine is in the bottle.” The winery is a connection of several buildings that have long been a part of the farm. The winery itself is the old milking barn. The next room connected to the milking barn is the gift shop; it was originally the granary. Attached to the granary is the building that had its beginning as the machine shop for the farm and has now been transformed into a tasting room. The tasting room contains a bar over which hangs a chandelier made from wine glasses and tables. The décor in the room is all wine. Wine sampling is offered on the weekends and sometimes during the week. Since large school groups frequently visit the Apple Barn during the week, they do not host tastings when the school children are onsite. Apple Barn recommends calling before visiting on weekdays to participate in wine tastings. While they produce about 12 varieties of fruit wines, here are a few that are especially popular now: Honey Crisp Apple Wine – Made only from honey crisp apples. “The top-grade apples, large and shiny, are what are sold onsite. feeling that we had a good plan, we began to look around to partner with an orchard,” McGonegal said. “We did not want just any orchard but one that focused on heritage varieties of apples.” Brighton Woods Orchard, which has been in business since the 1950s, became partners with the new wine and cider maker and ÆppelTreow (pronounced Apple True) was born in 2001. ÆppelTreow is a winery and a distillery. They create both cider and perry, and they also distill hard spirits. “We use the pre-prohibition meaning of cider, that is fermented or hard cider. Perry is the pear analogue to cider. Cider is made from apples,” McGonegal said.

He continued to study wine making and was able to purchase better ingredients, thus producing better wines. ÆppelTreow produces wines and ciders using the traditional methods used in Europe for years, resulting in a finer quality product. They make their Perry using the Champagne method perfected in France many years ago. It produces a smooth, sparkling beverage. For McGonegal the goal was to create an upgraded cider. “Our goal is to make the cider fancier,” he said. “Cider made from apples is often compared to beer but in reality it is much more expensive than beer to create. It is often placed next to beer in the stores rather than next to wines which are more comparably priced.” ÆppelTreow is in the building that was once the farm’s dairy barn. Today it is the home of the winery and the distillery and the tasting room, where visitors can partake of the winery’s various products. Often pouring these tastes are owner Milissa McGonegal, or long-term employee Mickie Verran, who will share their knowledge of the various wines, ciders, and spirits. ÆppelTreow has begun putting some of its ciders in cans, making it easier to ship. The line of ciders in the cans have been named the Songbird Ciders. Each ciders carries a picture of a songbird, a reproduction of an original painting by owner Milissa McGonegal. Each of

the birds depicted has been seen on the property. According to Charles McGonegal black currant and elderberry cider are among the best sellers. “Fall is the time for cider. We always run out of cider in the fall,” Charles said. “Another favorite is our untraditional whiskey, which is made out of sorghum. It has a really nice taste and is lightly flavored. Because we do not use wheat in our whiskey, it is gluten free.” Most of ÆppelTreow’s ciders are made from the heritage varieties of fruit. “I love showing off the heritage varieties. They are grown for flavor and aroma rather than how they will look on the shelves,” Charles said. Visit the tasting room and enjoy a taste of the fine ciders that are drier than most people believe, Charles said. “It’s the quintessential country drink.” ÆppelTreow Winery and Distillery is at 1072 288th Ave. (Highway B) in Burlington. many years. Other friends and relatives have chosen the farm as the site to shoot their wedding photos. A favorite spot for a photo is under the 200-year-old oak tree that gave OakVue its name. Over the past few years, the peaceful simplicity of barn venues for wedding ceremonies and receptions has become the favorite of many bridal couples. Wisconsin, with its many barns, has seen several in the area turn into wedding venues as many farm families move away from farming yet are reluctant to give up the farm. For the Gillmore Family, OakVue Farm is a very special place. For 173 years, seven generations of the Gillmore family have made their home on the beautiful dairy farm. Today Julie and Matt Gilmore along with

their seven children make this historical farm their home and are ready to make changes to the farm to ensure that it remains in the family for more generations. “When Matt’s parents were ready to retire and sell the farm, we decided that it needed to remain in the family,” Jill Gillmore said. So, she and her husband Matt purchased the more than 20-acre farm eight years ago and continued to milk cows as had been done for generations. “While raising and milking Jersey cows had been the family farm’s business it was no longer profitable with today’s current costs,” Jill Gillmore said. In 2012, they sold the herd and began to consider other ways to make the farm profitable.

OakVue was a family dairy farm for six generations. The picturesque setting is now the home of weddings, family reunions, showers and business meetings.

“We began toying with the idea of turning the barn into a wedding venue around 2013,” Jill Gillmore said. But it was not until 2015 that they became serious about the plan. “We began to seriously work on cleaning out the barn, which was knee high with hay,” Jill Gillmore said. Working on a daily basis the barn began to take shape as a possible wedding venue. Changing from agricultural use to assembly use was not merely a cleaning out of the barn. “We had to work with a structural engineer and an architect to be certain the building was strong enough to handle large groups. And we had to get permission from the city to receive that use change,” Jill Gillmore said. The goal was to create an ambient space that embraced whatever tone the wedding couple wanted. For this reason, they kept the barn simple, embracing the open space look that can be transformed by the wedding party into the look they desire. The barn is a beautiful space with high ceilings and rustic beams throughout. The floor is the original hardwood that has been refinished to bring out the grain and shine of the wood. Along the inside walls of the converted barn are a variety of antique farm tools mounted on the wall. They are so discrete that one may not even notice them unless close to the walls and then it is hard to miss them, a reminder of the barn’s history.

Entering the barn, a small flight of stairs leads to the main floor. First noted is the beautiful open space and stained glass window opposite. Two rows of simple chandeliers, fitting the look of the venue and providing light for the space, line the room. For those who have difficulty climbing stairs, there is an accessible ramp at the other end of the building. Its easy slope up to the main floor makes walking with a walker or guiding a wheelchair a comfortable trip. If the wedding service is to be performed on site, there are various spaces for the couple to choose. The wedding couple can meander the property and pick the spot that pleases them such as near the barn, under one of the oak trees, or out near the open fields. Inside the space can be configured to suit the bride and groom. A popular spot is beneath the stained glass window giving it a somewhat church-like appearance. Others may prefer to use the slightly raised stage area as the spot for exchanging vows. The stage area can be used in a variety of ways to suit the bridal party and to fit in with the décor of the room. The stage makes a perfect spot for a head table for the bridal party. It also has been used as the spot to place the buffet table or the dessert table. If live music is part of the celebration, the stage may be the place for the musicians to set up their instruments or if a DJ is used it could also be the spot for him. They have tried to keep the venue an open space that can be arranged to suit the bridal party. “We want to make the bride happy. This is her big day and memories of this day will remain with the couple throughout their lives,” Jill Gillmore said. “We want them to look back with fond memories and make OakVue a place that they consider theirs and will enjoy coming back to visit throughout the years. OakVue provides tables and chairs for the event and up to 181 guests can be accommodated. The tables are oblong or round and can be arranged in any pattern. Couples can set up the space to their liking. “We prefer that they do their own setup and is one of the reasons we allow extra time on the day of the wedding,” Jill Gillmore said. “We allow a full 12 hours for use of the venue. We also provide two hours for rehearsal the night before the event if the ceremony is to be held onsite. Because of that we only schedule one wedding per weekend. We don’t want the bride and groom to feel they are being rushed.”

The Flynn family, owners of Sophisticatering. are known for their high quality foods with everything made from scratch using green or organic ingredients, USDA choice or higher grade meats, and wild caught fish. Sophisticatering will bring everything to the venue prepped and ready to serve along with a grill and smoker to cook items that need to be prepared onsite. Many farm weddings prefer a picnic type reception out of doors. Sophisticatering offers a picnic-type menu that includes s’mores for dessert, which are made from scratch, even the marshmallows. The caterer says they will not use commercial marshmallows because they include blue dye and are not acceptable to the chef. A variety of menus are available and can be viewed online through a link at OakVue’s website. Sit down plated dinners, buffet dinners, taco bar, stations, family-style dinners and the outdoor barbeque are all available. Sophisticatering is the only food service that can be contracted to serve at OakVue. Annette Flynn, who along with her husband are the owners of Sophisticatering, will work with the couple to ensure that the food is exactly what they want. in 2019 is $4,000. “We are not wedding planners. We just provide the space, for you to plan your own memorable wedding,” Jill Gillmore said. While the barn venue was designed for weddings, it is not limited to just weddings. It is the perfect venue for anniversary parties, bridal showers, baptisms, family reunions and business meetings. They also offer hayrides and at Christmas time, the farm is the site of the Living Nativity, both started by Matt’s father. “We want every bride to feel at home here – forever. We encourage them to return and walk the grounds as their family grows, taking photos as the years pass in places where they were originally taken on their wedding day but taken now with their growing family,” Jill Gillmore said. the moment, they should go with what they love. There is no right or wrong diamond shape. It is what appeals to the person that is the right choice for them. Most of the diamond engagement rings at The Jewelry Center are set in 14-carat or 18-carat gold or in platinum. “Currently the white gold is the most popular but we do get calls for yellow gold and occasionally for rose gold. Platinum is used less frequently because of its cost,” Ehrmann said. The process of purchasing the engagement ring often begins long before anyone sets foot in the jewelry store. “Both the prospective bride and groom may have spent time casually looking at rings in photos, online, or in windows of jewelry stores, Ehrmann said. “He may come into the store and pull out his phone and bring up a picture of the type of ring he is interested in purchasing.” There was a time when the man came in by himself and purchased the ring. Today couples often come in together to purchase the ring. “For some it is important that the ring be the one that is really desired. While it is not unusual for the bride to accompany her prospective groom to choose the ring it is still more common that the groom comes in without her,” Ehrmann said. The groom may come in alone or he may bring a friend or members of his family, for moral support. “We are always glad to help in the process of choosing the ring and are willing to spend time working with the young man to help him make a good choice. We need to know his budget and the general idea of what he wants to purchase as far as style and diamond shape and size,” Ehrmann said. The Jewelry Center has a large display of engagement rings

in a variety of styles, stone sizes and cost. The jeweler will help determine which of these best fits the needs of the customer. He or she will also point out what makes each of the rings special. Remember that when choosing a diamond, it is not just the size that is important. A smaller stone can be more expensive because of its cut and its quality. Diamonds are judged on the 4 C’s, that is color, cut, clarity and carat size. “The cut is most important for if the stone is not properly cut it won’t sparkle and won’t be pretty,” Ehrmann said. The color and the clarity of the stone are also important. A cloudy stone or one that is off color will not be as attractive. If nothing in the case is exactly what one is looking for, they have the option of looking at loose stones and having it placed in a setting of their own design. “Nicole in our store is wonderful working with customers to help them design the setting of their dreams. She is able to bring the customers ideas to life on paper. Ideas that will later be transformed into the ring,” Ehrmann said.

Once the engagement ring is chosen, the wedding band itself is chosen. For the bride the wedding band is usually one that matches the engagement ring and the two are often sold as a set. It is important to choose a wedding band that enhances the look of the engagement ring and that can be comfortably worn together. “If the manufacturer does not provide a matching ring, we will make one,” Ehrmann said. In today’s digital world everything must be recorded and placed on social media. That too is becoming the norm for proposals. “There is a box for the engagement ring that includes a small video recorder that will catch the reaction of the bride to be,” said Thomas Ruse of The Jewelry Center. “Others will have a friend or family member hidden to record the event.”

Having grandma’s pearls sliding around the dance floor when the necklace breaks, is not the plan of any bride. The Jewelry Center is a full-service jewelry store with a goldsmith on the premises one day a week so customers can bring in jewelry for repair and be reassured it does not leave the store. For those looking to celebrate the German tradition in an event that’s suitable for the entire family, consider making a stop at Elkhorn Oktoberfest. The event, held in Veterans Park and the adjacent block of Wisconsin Street, is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20. Now in its 13th year, it’s grown into the largest event the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce oversees. “It’s crazy how big of an event it’s grown into,” Chris Clapper, executive director of the chamber, said. The numbers support Clapper’s claim as every facet of the event have grown, from event sponsors and wine and beer tasting to vendor booths and chili tasting participants. Below is a breakdown of the activities going on during Elkhorn Oktoberfest.

This year will feature the 9th Annual Oktoberfest Car Show, which will be held 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the north parking lot of the Walworth County Government Center. There is no pre-registration, the first 75 entries will receive dash plaques and there’s a Peoples Choice award. While there is no fee to enter the car show, the suggested donation is $5 or five non-perishable food items – all of which will go to the Elkhorn Food Pantry.

Chili cook-off

Attendees can expect community members to “bring the heat” for the annual chili cook-off. It will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cash prizes will go to the top three chili recipes as voted on by the tasters. There is no entry fee to compete in the chili cook-off and it’s open to individuals and

businesses. The cost to sample chili is $5, which offers tastings from any or all of the competitors present. The deadline to register with the chamber to be in the chili cook-off is Oct. 15.

Run/walk

The Elkhorn Oktoberfest 5K run/2-mile walk will begin at the Walworth County Fairgrounds and end at the Oktoberfest site. Through Oct. 14, registration for adults is $30; for students in grades K-12, it’s $15. Beginning Oct. 15 the fees increase by $5. Participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and goodie bag and awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group. Adults 21 and older will receive admission to the beer and wine tasting; those 21 and younger a free root beer. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., the run/walk at 9:30 a.m. To register, visit oktoberfest.5k.run.

Raise a stein

The official tapping of the keg is set for 11 a.m., followed by wine and beer tasting and steinholding contests until 5 p.m. Admission to the wine and beer tasting tent is $12 a person and includes a commemorative Oktoberfest glass and six tastings of beer or wine. Guests are also invited to cheer on participants as they hold a weighted-down stein with their arm outstretched, or better yet, join the fun. “Anyone can participate in the stein-holding contest and there’s no cost to do so,” Clapper said.

Clapper said it’s great to showcase local groups at a community event. “A lot of these groups perform on closed stages so people don’t always know about them. This exposes them to the community,” she said. Once the community groups wrap up their performances, The Spectaculars will provide live music.

Food/vendors

In addition to the chili, there will be a variety of food vendors on site in an effort to offer something for everyone, according to Clapper. And for those wanting to do a little shopping, there will be more than 130 vendors – selling everything from crafts and artwork to commercial items.

For the kids

A variety of activities will also be offered for the young Oktoberfest goers. In addition to a bounce house and slide (for a small fee), kids will have the opportunity to decorate pumpkins and more. “This is a family friendly event so we try to offer activities for the kids that are fun and relate to fall,” Clapper said.

Shuttle service

Shuttle services from the parking lot off of Highway 11 across from the Walworth County Fairgrounds to Oktoberfest will be offered during the event. There is no charge for parking at the fairgrounds and parking downtown will be limited, with Wisconsin Street between Moy’s and Friends on the Square being shut down for the event. When it came time to publish her first book in 2008, she realized that she wanted to self-publish. “My purpose as an author is to provide my reader with a pleasurable pause. That’s why my publishing company was called Pleasurable Pause Press. I decided to self-publish so no one could tell me, ‘This isn’t a good cover’ or ‘The book needs to be longer,’” Goodwin explained. Her press uses offset printing, a traditional method that rarely is used in book printing anymore.

Goodwin discussed her writing process, a process that has taken her 10 years for both of her books. “In the beginning, I’ll be out in my kayak looking at nature. I’ll see a heron, and I can’t wait to get home and write about it. I experience something and take a note of it. I’m not a disciplined writer who usually allots a certain amount of time each day for writing. My books are made up of small notes at a time,” Goodwin said. Her more spontaneous approach to writing has gotten her an Independent Publisher Book Award for “Stay for Lunch” and four national book awards for “Come to the Lake.” One of these awards is a Living Now Book Award. When she’s not writing, Goodwin cherishes her “analog moments” with family and friends on Pleasant Lake. “I’m a freshwater lake girl. I love to kayak, canoe and feed large groups of people. Communal events are important to me,” Goodwin said. “Come to the Lake” contains a cookbook section titled “Tiny Kitchen Cooking.”

In late August, Goodwin and her friend Lea Spicer swam around the entirety of Pleasant Lake for the 14th year in a row. Goodwin, 60, is following in the footsteps of her husband’s mom, who also swam the perimeter of the lake once a year until late in her life. “Age is a state of mind. I can look at you and tell you that I’m 60 years old, but I can hardly believe it. You have to keep moving, keep saying yes and keep trying new things. Participate in life fully – it keeps your life full and alive,” Goodwin reflected. Goodwin reflects on how her books can provide a pleasurable pause for readers. “Even though ‘Come to the Lake’ is a personal and singular story about a tiny lake, it has a universal appeal to it,” she said. “You need to first disconnect in order to connect with those around you. Returning for the second straight year, Wilmot Mountain has plans to deliver more new features to its Epic Fall Festival, which will be on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event, which is free, unless otherwise noted, is at 11931 Fox River Road in Wilmot. Wilmot Mountain, owned by Colorado-based Vail Resorts, kicks off its annual festival with a 5K run along the slopes at 10 a.m. and continues through the evening. The 5K run, however, will not be the only activity on the lineup, according to Marketing and Public Relations Manager Rachael Muhlenbeck. Muhlenbeck, who said the scheduled events will offer something for the entire family, reports there will be four additions to the 2018 festival. New features include a scavenger hunt, bags tournament, wine tasting and a family friendly movie at dusk. Guests can register for the 5K run and bags tournament

Participants in the 5K run, Muhlenbeck said, will traverse terrain they have never experienced while skiing during the winter season. “We will take you up the backside of the mountain and you can kind of see what you don’t normally get to see during the season,” she said. “It is kind of a backstage tour of our backside of the mountain.” Muhlenbeck said the runners will hit multiple different land elements, like gravel and grass, as they forge ahead during the 5K run. Although running along the mountains can bring different challenges, Muhlenbeck said people of all ages joined in last year. “We had all ages last year, it is challenging, but it is doable,” she said. “It is probably a little more challenging than your typical 5K.” For runners who win the race, they will receive a thrilling prize, she added. “Our top male and female finisher will win a season pass to ski on Wilmot Mountain, which is really exciting,” Muhlenbeck said. The prizes will be awarded at about 11:30 a.m., when officials open the course to make way for hayrides, which is scheduled from 11:45 a.m. until 5 p.m. As runners receive their awards, visitors explore the slopes on hayrides; Wilmot

Mountain officials plan to offer a variety of other options to meet the needs of any family member.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY OPTIONS

Options consist of season pass printing, pumpkin painting, bounce houses, retail sidewalk sale, Burton Riglet demonstrations along with the chance to buy an Epic Pass for the season. Additionally, food and drink are available for purchase. Face painting, which runs from noon until 4 p.m., is another option for children. Additionally, at dusk, Wilmot Mountain officials will present the film “Hocus Pocus” to help visitors gear up for Halloween spirit. “We are doing a movie at dusk, so folks can bring their blankets and chairs, and we are going to set up on the mountains a movie showing in the evening,” Muhlenbeck said. “Hocus Pocus is a really fun, family, fall Halloween-type movie.” While the movie is playing, a bonfire will keep visitors warm and snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Entertainment is not limited to the movie, however, with a DJ offering an array of musical genres from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. In the afternoon, a local music group will take the stage, where they will perform through 6 p.m. “We have got the Kyle Young Band playing,” Muhlenbeck said. “They will

A bags tournament and scavenger hunt are two other contests, both of which offer prizes, Muhlenbeck said. The bags tournament, which is open from 1 to 3 p.m., will be single elimination. “The winning team will walk away with a really cool Wilmot Mountain logo bag set,” said Muhlenbeck, adding the contest cost $20 to enter. Registration for the bags tournament is available online or at the ski resort’s guest services desk. The scavenger hunt, she said, looks to bring some challenges, but participants can find the clues within the complex, and even in the lodge. “We will have a scavenger hunt on the hill, so it is mostly going to be answering questions, you will have to go around and maybe find a picture in the lodge that is one of the answers, things like that,” she said. Winners of the scavenger can receive gift cards and some “Wilmot Mountain swag,” she said.

For the older crowd, they can sample wine for $20, and bring home a Wilmot Mountain keepsake, a souvenir stemless wine glass. The wine samples, Muhlenbeck said, are featured on the menu at Walt’s Tavern. “We are doing a wine tasting, you have to be 21 and older, and you get to sample 10 different wines and those wines are featured on our Walt’s Tavern menu during the winter season.” A Wilmot Mountain official gives visitors a lift on a hayride during the festival last year.
