Champion
AREA WOMAN AND RESCUE DOG SHOW AMAZING AGILITY by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
hen Tracy Beck was looking to adopt a rescue dog a few years back, she had a vision of what she wanted. “I had lost another rescue dog and was looking to replace it,” she recalled. “We saw Amber at a rescue in Huntley, Illinois, but I was looking for a bigger dog for the farm. But my husband really liked the look of her, so we went to check her out.” The couple drove down to Illinois from their Elkhorn farm to meet Amber.

“I wasn’t sure,” Beck said. “She was way too small and I wanted a big farm dog. But he was adamant on her and said a dog didn’t need to be big to bark if something was wrong on the farm, which was what we wanted.” So, they brought Amber home. “And, boy, did she have a lot of energy,” Beck said. “I mean a lot. She was rearranging the furniture all over the house!” Beck said she knew they were going to have to find a way to harness that energy, and a friend told her the dog needed a job. MARCH 2020
“She needed something to drain her mind and her body,” Beck said. “You could run her all day, but she needed mental stimulation as well.” Beck’s friend suggested agility training and she figured it was worth a try and signed up for a class. “She just loved it and caught on really fast,” she said. “I started to like it, too.”
Competing begins
After Beck and Amber graduated from the basic agility class, they began
What is dog agility training? According to the American Kennel Club, agility is one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the country – and for good reason. It’s incredible exercise for both owner and dog and helps forge a deeper relationship. Additionally, it’s exhilarating to watch as the dog nimbly and quickly crawls through tunnels, weaves around poles and leaps through tires.
The basics
Dog agility is a sport where dogs are directed through a pre-set obstacle course within a certain time limit. Courses typically have between 14 to 20 obstacles, which can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws and pause tables where the dog must stop for a set amount of time. At each trial the owner and dog race around the unique courses designed for that day. All of this is done with the dog relying solely on the cues and body language the owner uses to direct them on course. All breeds, including mixed breeds, can participate in Agility – from the smallest to the largest of dogs. To be eligible to compete in Agility, your dog must be: 15 months of age or older; registered with the American Kennel Club or listed with the AKC Indefinite Listing Privilege program, which allows unregistered dogs of registerable breeds to compete in AKC Performance and Companion Events. Mixed breed dogs can be registered through the Canine Partners program to be able to compete; spayed or neutered dogs are eligible to compete; and in sound health and up-to-date on vaccinations. to look at what it might take to enter the competition ring. “A friend showed me the ins and outs to get involved in the competitions and we started training on a more serious level,” Beck said. “Amber was just a natural. She’s very fast and very competitive. It’s the perfect combination.” Amber is an Australian Cattle Dog mixed breed, which doesn’t impede her ability to compete. “They have categories for mixed breeds at all the competitions, so that’s not a problem. A lot of people don’t realize that you don’t have to spend thousands on pure-bred dogs to do this. Rescue dogs have so much to offer,” Beck said. Amber, who is about 6 years old now, and Beck have been competing for about 4 years and winning multiple awards along the way. “She has her MACH, the Master Agility Championship title, from the American Kennel Club, which she won this year,” Beck said. “Her first big title was the CATCH; it’s the CPE Agility Trial Champion title. She’s won hundreds of ribbons, too.” Beck said Amber loves the spotlight and competition setting. “She’s a spitfire,” she said with a laugh. “She’s just a very playful, happy go-getter. She likes to play all the time and loves all
kinds of toys. Everything is a game to her and she loves games.” Amber also has a soft side, Beck said. “She’s just a love bug and thinks she’s a lapdog, even though she’s 38 pounds,” Beck said. “She’s got the cutest little wiggle butt. It’s probably the reason we got her, it was so cute.”
Rescuing more Beck said rescuing animals is something that’s very close to her heart. “We just rescued another dog three months ago,” she said. “His name is Titus and he’s about a year and a half old. He’s a great addition to our family.” Beck said if there was one thing she wanted people to know, it was that rescue dogs can do everything pure-bred dogs can do. “You don’t have to go out and spend a lot of money on a dog like that when there are so many looking for homes,” she said. “And these dogs have just as much potential to succeed in dog sports, if that’s what you’re interested in.” She added that the experience for the dog owner in agility training is just as beneficial as it is to the dog. “It’s great exercise and it’s just such a great way to spend time with your dog,” she said. “It’s also great for kids and dogs

to bond and spend time together. They can just take a class and see how much fun it is.” Beck recommended anyone interested in taking up the sport of dog agility training should start with a beginners class. “There’s a few local places to do that,” she said. “There’s Think Positive in Waukesha, and For Pet’s Sake in Mukwonago, and Wag Agility in Spring Grove, Illinois, for people a little farther south. They are all great places to start.” As for Beck and Amber, they’re headed into a new competition season. “We qualified for the national AKC competitions in Georgia and Amber was ranked 13th in the national dog agility mixed breed, or All American, category at the AKC,” Beck said. “We’ll be busy.”

Organic growth Booming business leads to expansion for shop specializing in CDB, organic products

Bobbi and Dan Robers didn’t think their business –Not Your Grandma’s Pantry – would become an instant hit in downtown Burlington. But since November, when they opened at 165 W. Chestnut Street, the Robers have already restocked inventory four times and were set to launch a new location in Lake Geneva sometime in February. “Business has been three times of what we planned for,” Bobbi said. “We are very ahead of schedule. We have stocked the farm stand area four times already.” Not Your Grandma’s Pantry touts its selection of 100 percent pure and organic CBD hemp products grown locally as well as Amish-style bulk flours, herbs,
seasonings, infused oils and vinegar, old fashioned candies, fair trade coffees and teas. In addition, the Robers have farm-totable cheeses, meats, vegetables, jams, spreads, relishes and gifts from local artisans and crafters. The retail sales, however, is just one part of the Robers’ business. The Robers also have kitchen consisting of smoothies, sandwiches, soup and salad bar, and foods tailored to Kato, vegan and Whole30 diets. “If you look around, I would say 90 percent of what we have is organic. Our smoothies are made with organic vegetables, fruits,” she said. “We carry a Keto selection for breakfast and especially Keto bread for lunch.”

I wanted that hometown feel, like going into your grandma’s house. But grandma wouldn’t sell CBD oil, so it is Not Your Grandma’s Pantry. Filling a void The Robers, who are retired, initially opened the business to fill a need for CBD oil because the product had helped their son’s disability. Their son, who suffered seizures, attempted other methods before the Robers tried CBD oil. “Our neurologist at Froedtert said they have had a lot of luck with CBD oil for children, but no studies on adults,” said Bobbi, whose son is an adult. “Why don’t we give it a try and see if it works?” she recalled asking. “At some point we realized his seizures were less than what they were.” In total, the Robers have six adult children. The Robers, who traveled frequently to find the product, decided to bring it closer to home and offer CBD oil at a store. “We needed to bring this to everybody because it is such a good thing. People need to understand what it is, everybody has a
connotation that it is bad,” Bobbi said. “It is a hemp plant, so it doesn’t have THC in it, so then we were like let’s open up an Amish style bulk store.” The Robers then decided to add a kitchen, or pantry, which conjured up a grandmotherly quality. A grandmother, however, wouldn’t offer CBD oil – hence the name. “I wanted that hometown feel, like going into your grandma’s house,” she said. “But grandma wouldn’t sell CBD oil, so it is Not Your Grandma’s Pantry.”
Local products The pantry, and kitchen, boast locally produced items, with some coming from familiar establishments, according to the Robers. The coffee comes from Plank Road Roasting Company, cheese curds are purchased wholesale from Hill Valley Dairy while Harry Hansen’s in Franksville provides meat products. In addition, Bodi’s Bake Shop in

downtown Twin Lakes produces the pantry’s bread and pies, Bobbi said. “We try to keep everything we have in our store local – at least Wisconsin,” she said. “We worked with other businesses in the area, so if there is something we need and another business in the Burlington area makes, we purchase it wholesale from them.” As for the future, the Robers are looking to Lake Geneva, where they have plans to open a second store. The Lake Geneva store, named the Farmstand, will be located in the Fancy Fair Mall, 830 W. Main Street. The Waterfront Pub and Grill is nestled aside Highway 50 as drivers enter Delavan from the east. The attractive, blue-gray building with windows trimmed in white and a second-floor outdoor balcony is a favorite place to view the sunset on Delavan Lake while enjoying one of the restaurant’s seasonal drinks or tap beers while visiting with friends. The atmosphere is pleasant and laid back. A full sail hangs over the bar, in honor of the sailing that takes place on Delavan Lake, while a motorcycle hangs from the ceiling near the back door. At one time many motorcycle groups met here in the summer but now it is more local residents and vacationing visitors to the Delavan-Lake Geneva area who find their way to the Waterfront. For the football lovers, a Brett Favre framed jersey is on the wall to remind visitors of Wisconsin’s football heritage. from light salads and sandwiches, to full dinners. “Our food is amazing, as is our selection of local tap beers,” said Carter Torkelson, son of owner Tim Torkelson. “We are always pleased when we find a new brew that is enjoyed by our customers. We have such a large selection on tap that many come to check out our latest new brew. The tap beers change frequently as new ones are found to appeal to the customers.” Carter works as the supervisor at the Waterfront. “Our kitchen staff is very stable and so the consistency of the food remains the same,” Carter said. “We use high quality foods. Our New York strip steaks are USDA Prime and noted for fine quality.” Carter is aided in running the restaurant and bar by managers Crystal Andraska and Jacob Prado. The restaurant has been in the family since approximately 1984 when Carter’s grandfather Jim Schoele purchased the property. “At that time it was a small building which was later demolished and replaced with a larger and newer building,” Carter said. battered and fried fish they also offer two other choices – baked cod, or boiled cod. The boiled cod is a specialty and is served in a creamy butter sauce, with carrots and both golden and purple potatoes. “We start by serving three pieces of fish with more to come if you can handle it,” Carter said. “The fish is served with a choice of potato pancakes, house-made chips or French fries, also as much as you care to eat. Our coleslaw is hand mixed inhouse making it fresh and flavorful. “Don’t forget to start with our housemade clam chowder, which is available all day. While not part of the Fish Fry it goes with it well,” he said. “For those who can’t decide which of the fish choices they prefer, start with a piece of the fried and a piece of the baked. Or have your first serving of one and switch to the other when time for a refill. “If you can’t wait for Friday to try the
fish, come in for the cod sandwich. It is the same beer-battered cod but served on a brioche bun with tartar sauce and cheddar cheese,” Carter said. “There is also a walleye sandwich, another favorite fish of the area.” The atmosphere in the pub is friendly, happy and laid back. The restaurant is known for its large portions, so much so that many patrons go home with doggie bags. Most likely these leftovers will not be given to the dog but be enjoyed as a late night snack or for lunch the following day. There are a variety of places to sit and enjoy. The large bar is a favorite of many while others prefer the high top tables in the main bar room. The side dining room has booths for those who prefer a quieter space. Families with children are welcome and they provide a menu for children 12 and younger with favorites such as fish and chips, hamburgers, hot dogs and macaroni and cheese along with several other choices. Who doesn’t love a burger? Especially a big, juicy half-pound Angus beef burger cooked to order. While they have a number of special burgers that range from simple to extravagant – or spicy to sweet – there is always the option of building your own burger. While the menu has a wide variety of choices there are also daily specials. Many places offer Taco Tuesday, but the

Not surprisingly some of the items are those visitors expect in a Wisconsin pub – some good local beer and, of course, cheese curds. “Our cheese curds are our biggest seller,” Carter said. They go well as an appetizer or as a snack while diners are enjoying an evening drink and viewing the lake. Along the wall beside the bar, a tall stairway can be seen leading to the upstairs. This stairway goes up to the outdoor balcony. It is from here that a beautiful view of the lake can be seen and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset. “Customers may take their drinks up to the balcony to enjoy the view,” Carter said. “We do not have drink service up there at this time so they must purchase the drink downstairs and take it with them. Traveling up that long staircase is worth the view. “And of course we do have the Wisconsin traditional Friday Fish Fry,” he added. “Ours is really unique.” Their fish fry is an all-you-can eat version for $13.95. The fish is cod, in a beer batter made with New Glarus Spotted Cow beer. For those who prefer not to eat the

Waterfront gets a head start with Taco Mondays. During lent the fish fry is also offered on Wednesdays. “Saturday nights are special especially for those who enjoy prime rib. Servings of 12 or 14 ounces of prime rib come with asparagus and garlic-mashed potatoes. “A good date night meal,” Carter said. It is difficult to decide if visitors come for the food, the view or the friendly atmosphere. Perhaps it’s a bit of all of these. “We are fortunate to have a staff that is friendly and competent. The majority of our servers have been on staff for over two years,” Carter said. “Our head chef has worked in our kitchen for eight years although not all of them have been as head chef. Jacob Prado, manager, has worked here for 14 years. The staff works together as a family.” Prado agrees: “We all help each other out. When someone is overwhelmed other members of the staff step up and help.” This is especially true in summertime when visitors to the area fill the restaurant and lines form out the door.
Community members The Torkelson family has lived in the community for many years and as such they support community activities. There are frequent fund raisers for St. Andrew’s School in Delavan, such as the egg drop now being supported. For a $2 donation a plastic egg is filled with candy or a possible coupon for a discount on some of the drinks or food items served in-house. There may be a food drive to support the Delavan Lions Club’s collection. “We try to help those in need in our community,” Carter said. At this time of year it is not as busy as during the summer boating season, which means it’s a good time to try out the restaurant. “In summer sometimes there is a long wait,” Carter said. “But you will find that it is worth the wait to enjoy the friendliness and fine food available.” The Waterfront Pub and Grill is at 408 Highway 50, Delavan. Nikki Burd operates the Healing Tree with business partner Chantry Kerkman. “We offer massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, hypnosis, reiki intuitive counseling and we have meditation,” she said. “We have something that everybody can use to help with their natural healing process.” Burd, noting recent trends, believes some people are looking for natural approaches because they find them more effective. “It is important to have other options. Sometimes the natural approach is better for people,” she said. “Some people don’t want to go and do aggressive treatments.”
Holistic vision
Burd, a massage therapist for 22 years, launched the business in June 2016 on Milwaukee Avenue and recently moved to a larger facility at 148 E. separate business entity but shares the same vision. “We all come together as one unit because we think it is important to have that same vision.” The same vision, she said, has allowed her establishment to thrive because many clients use more than one service. “They may need a massage, they may need acupuncture, they may need a meditation class, they may need yoga,” she said. The Healing Tree typically sees anywhere from 50 to 75 people weekly and serves as a safe place for clients to come, according to Kerkman, who has been a massage therapist for more than a decade. Kerkman’s experience includes working with athletes, notably triathletes, on improving their overall health. “We provide a safe space for people to come. Our approach is relaxing and therapeutic,” Kerkman said. “A lot of people are ready to spend more time working on themselves, working on their bodies instead of going to a clinic to get a quick fix.”
Continuous growth
Meanwhile, Burd reports the Healing Tree has shown positive growth since opening in June 2016. Growth included a location change, which offered a larger space, as well as adding more services. “We actually went from a smaller space to this space in October. We were there for 3 1/2 years,” she said. “We knew we wanted to add more to the office. We wanted to add yoga, we wanted to have a room for every one of our therapists because we had too many people in the office, but not enough rooms.” Additionally, unlike the previous facility, yoga instructors are on hand to offer classes because of more space. However, Burd said the Healing Tree looks to increase services in the future. “I think it is going to be great for everybody to come and check us out. We have a lot of things that we want to do down the road, too.” Since opening, Burd and Kerkman have seen many people from around Southeast Wisconsin come to seek services, including Waterford, Wind Lake, Elkhorn, Bristol, Delavan and Twin Lakes. “We do have clients that come from 30

Military on Top grant accepts nominations James R. Taylor and Sons Inc., of East Troy, offers a new, no-cost roof to one lucky Walworth County military veteran each year with its Putting Our Military on Top grant program. The nominee will be notified in May of 2020, according to Taylor. Through their Military on Top program, Taylor and Sons is accepting nominations through April 1. Nominees must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of Walworth County. He/she must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces either with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, National Guard or as a reservist in any of the branches. Nominations can be made by anyone, including the nominees and must include a photo of the house. Entries will be accepted by mail only; no hand delivered, overnight, courier, emailed or faxed nominations will be accepted. The nominee must own the home and be current on mortgage or loan payments on the property. AREA BUILDER, REMODELER PRIORITIZES CHARITABLE WORK by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
For Jim and Stevie Taylor, owners of James R. Taylor and Sons in East Troy, being small business owners in a small town means being part of the community in more ways than just providing a service. “We’re family owned and operated and we’re part of this community,” Jim Taylor said. “We care about the community. We live in the community. We’re happy here. We’ve raised our kids here. We have a great business here and we want to give back, not
just to our customers, but to everyone.” Being a multi-generational business is a source of pride for the Taylors and a testament to their commitment to quality workmanship and community connections. One of the family’s charity efforts is entering its seventh year, the Putting Our Military on Top grant program gifts a new roof to a Walworth County veteran in need. Nominations are open until April 1 with the new roof installed in spring (see sidebar for additional information). Since its inception, six Walworth
County veterans have been awarded a new roof. They are: Dennis Bolles, 2019; Ted Cvikota, 2018; Amanda Debaere, 2017; Larry Weber, 2016; Phil Schultz, 2015; and Francis Brady, 2014.

Last year, the McKones wanted a roof for the haunted house instead of the tarps they had previously used. “Taylor and Sons and O’Leary actually had crews to come set up for us. They paid their guys and brought crews over to help us out, which we couldn’t thank enough,” Jeff McKone said last fall. McKone said the addition of the wood roof was a blessing last year because the bitter weather would have been too much for the tarps. The Taylors have big plans this year with a new program that is still in the planning stages. “We feel like we’re very blessed and just want to give back, and hopefully, starting this year, we’re going to start a scholarship program for people who aren’t going to college or technical school, but want to enter the trades,” Jim said. When he began to think about a scholarship program, Jim said he wanted to do something for the kids who weren’t college-bound. “That’s how we’re going to approach this,” he said. “We want to get it set up and have it continue each year like the Military on Top program.”

advertising because we like to support the other businesses in East Troy,” Jim said. “We support the local newspapers, the chamber, local events, local nonprofits … we care about this community.” Recently, Taylor and Sons was the general contractor for the East Troy Brewery’s major renovations needed to turn a former bank building into the brewpub. “They were such a big part of the project,” brewery owner Ann Zess said. “They believe in East Troy and believed in the project. They worked side by side with us right from conception to the end.” Zess, who owns the East Troy Brewery with her husband, Ted, said the Taylors made the long construction project bearable with Jim and Stevie’s positive attitudes, which seems to be contagious. “I can’t say enough about them or their workers,” Ann Zess said. “Their workers emulate them. They’re all so kind and considerate. The way they work is just amazing, really. They were such a huge support for us.” “The company is only as good as the guys working here,” Jim said. “It couldn’t be done if we didn’t have the employees that we do.” Some of those employees have been with the Taylors for 20 years, Jim said.

“And now, my daughter (Haley) and son (Jim III) are in it,” he added. Haley Taylor is the marketing manager for the company and Jim III is still in high school, but is involved with a work/school program with the company. “We’re the fourth generation,” Haley said. “My cousins, myself and my brother are all involved. This truly is a family owned and operated business and we really do value our relationships with out customers and our community.”
A bit of history James said he is the third generation to own the company and he moved it to East Troy in the early 1980s. The Taylors employ about 20 people, including workmen and office staff. Along with roofing, Taylor and Sons offers remodeling services, with a showroom in East Troy, window replacement, siding, kitchens and baths, and new construction. “We can do pretty much anything in the

house,” Haley said. “We have experienced carpenters who are very knowledgeable in the construction field and can pretty much do anything.” “They can come in and we can do plans from the ground up,” Jim added. “We can design and build anything from kitchens and baths to remodels to full houses. With the showroom, it’s kind of like one-room shopping for our customers and we can help them design what they want.” James R. The place for fine furniture at reasonable prices
A good place to start for those looking to update the furniture in your home is Boxdrop, located at 23 S. Walworth St. in downtown Elkhorn. Boxdrop is a national wholesaler that works with a variety of companies to clear overstock and closeout items for major manufacturers. However, local stores are individually owned. Kristy and Rob Klein began their venture into owning a business by opening a Boxdrop store in Milwaukee. “Then the recession came and people weren’t purchasing new furniture,” Kristy said. “So we dropped out of the business. I went back to nursing and Rob found a new
job in his field as a production planner.” But when the economy turned around, the Kleins decided it was time to chase their dream of owning a business again. This time they opened a Boxdrop in their hometown. “We opened about four years ago with 8,000 square feet of warehouse space,” Kristy said. Several months ago the space on Walworth Avenue just in front of their warehouse space became available. It was perfect for them to add this large retail showroom, where the furniture and bedding could be well displayed and local shoppers would have easier access. A large display of sofas and mattresses
greet visitors, and as one progresses further there are spaces for bunk beds and dining room tables. “All of the furniture we have is supplied by a national wholesaler who works with major manufacturers to help them clear overstock and closeout items,” Kristy said. “We work to keep our overhead low so that we may offer our items at 30 percent to 80 percent below the expected retail rates.” And they keep advertising to a minimum. “Most of our customers come from referrals from other customers who have been so satisfied with our products and services, and especially by being able to purchase the furniture they like at lower

prices,” she added. Before opening the showroom on Walworth, customers made appointments to meet at the warehouse. This also kept overhead down because they were not paying salaries to salespeople just to wait for customers. “With the opening of the showroom on Walworth in the heart of town about six months ago, we have a lot of potential customers who just come in to browse and check out the merchandise on display,” Kristy said. “So now we are open daily to encourage customers to come in and find the furniture that most appeals to them. With new items arriving frequently, there is always something new and different on display.” The items most often replaced are the family or living room furniture and mattresses. According to industry standards, mattresses are replaced about every seven to eight years. Buying a mattress used to be a simple job. The Kleins also sponsor many youth group and sports activities. Each year they pick one youth sport to sponsor. “Project Graduation is another of the community projects that we are proud to provide some of the sponsorship,” Kristy said. “It is a program started sometime in the 1970s as an after graduation party. Students are locked in for the night and there are a variety of fun activities, including a DJ to provide music. It is a fun and safe activity for the graduates.” Kristy and Rob are the parents of six children and have worked to make this a true family business. “Our three older children work here in the store with us along with my daughter’s significant other,” Kristy said. “My mother-inlaw also works with us doing some sewing and cleaning, while my mother holds down the home front to care for the three younger children.” “We not only have the store in Elkhorn but have a second location in Milton (450 S. John Paul Road),” Rob said. “Managing both stores is a difficult job, but by working together as a team we are able to provide service to our customers. “Kristy is in charge of human resources and functions as the CFO of the company,” he added. “While she works behind the scenes, we handle the daily work of servicing our customers. But we are a family working together, and whenever help is needed we all pitch in. wondered about the help these people had at home after they left the facility. Of course many used home health agencies to help with their physical recovery, but what about keeping their home in shape. “We have developed a Total House Care for the Elderly program that includes ‘Senior proofing’ the home so that older residents can remain safely in their homes as they age,” she continued. “We will go into the home and assess what is needed to allow the senior to be safe in the home and we will search for both obvious safety hazards and those less obvious and correct them. This may include needs such as the installation of bathtub or shower grab bars, being certain that all needed handrails on staircases are safe and replaced if they are not.” Among the services that can be contracted for TruBlue to complete is the installation of wheelchair ramps so senior residents can safely enter or leave their homes. One of the problems that seniors often have is the accumulation of excessive belongings resulting in the home being so packed with items that they cannot safely navigate through the space without danger of falling. The space available may be too tight to allow them to maneuver their walkers and they may try to move without them resulting in falls and injuries. “Helping these seniors who have become hoarders restore their homes to a pleasant living space where they can again invite friends and family in to visit makes a big change in their quality of life,” Susan said. “We had one lady who was so depressed by the state of her home but was unable to manage to put it in order. “We went in and worked with her, helping her to make choices of what she needed to keep and what should be recycled or just thrown out. Items that can be used by others are donated. We try to find places truly in need of the items such as a Woman’s Shelter or the Walworth County Resale Shop. It is always good to donate usable items to those in need.” Susan said the most important thing is to build trust with these people so that they realize that you respect them, their possessions and that their feelings are important. “We worked slowly with her on a weekly basis helping her to decide what to keep, what to donate and what should just be trashed. As she made progress, you could see her demeanor improving and after she had everything in order, she decided to build a new home in another state where she would be closer to relatives,” Susan said.

If we don’t see it in them, then we don’t hire them.” Recently Jeff and Susan were attending the TruBlue annual convention in Orlando and were again honored for their work. Last year they were awarded the Rising Star Award by the company for their excellent work as a new franchise. This year they received the President’s Award, which is given to a franchise who believe in and follow the TruBlue Model. Sweating the stress away Hot yoga studio offers focused stress relief by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Wisconsin Power Yoga touts a sweat more, stress less approach to the traditional spiritual and ascetic discipline. The Burlington-based business launched last summer by duo Molly Elsbury and Aimee Endemann focuses on hot yoga. “The act of sweating is very detoxifying for our bodies and the heat helps increase your range of motion,” the duo wrote on its website. “Adding heat loosens our muscles allowing you to get into each pose a little deeper.” The two founders, who operate in various locations throughout the city, stress safety during each class. Elsbury, 30, started practicing yoga a little more than a decade ago in Burlington. While Elsbury used the traditional
approach, she eventually came into contact with Endemann, who taught hot Yoga. “I went to my first class when I was 19 here in Burlington, and just slowly practiced on and off with different studios in the area. Then in summer 2018, I ran into Aimee and she was teaching this style of Yoga,” she recalled. “I had never done it before and I started taking classes that she was doing and then fell in love with it.” The duo completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training through Live Love Teach Yoga in Rhode Island. Endemann said hot yoga, unlike other traditional practices, brings some challenges but believes anyone can succeed. “It is one of the more challenging types of yoga, but we like to make it attainable and achievable for everybody that comes into our classes,” she said.

Endemann said students can use the tools they learned in class during the workday. “It is an eye-opening experience for some people because they are stressed throughout their day,” she said. Diner does breakfast right TOWN FRYER IS A FAVORITE FOR FOOD, COFFEE, CONVERSATION Tucked away on a quiet street in Burlington, sits a small diner the locals know is one of the best places to grab breakfast. Shelia Mae’s Town Fryer is almost legendary in the community for its good food, large portions, friendly atmosphere and, as one person put it, “to-die-for” cinnamon rolls. The restaurant has been under the ownership of Shelia Mae Renz for 20 years, after she purchased it in 1999. “I came into this little place with a girlfriend and thought it was really charming,” Renz said. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch, from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, but it wasn’t always that way. “I’ve been coming here for over 50 years. I remember when they were open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.,” said 93-year-old Jean Moyer of Rochester. Moyer said her favorite time to stop by is for Sunday morning breakfast/brunch, where she frequently orders the Bacon Scramble, her favorite. “But they’ll make me anything I want,” Moyer added. “If I ask for it, they’ll make it.” “She’s my soup lover,” Renz said. “She loves to come in for the soups too.” Moyer’s nephew, Chris Woods, accompanied his aunt on Sunday and said he loves their breakfasts together. “I came all the way from Twin Lakes for the food and

the company,” Woods said. Renz said the strong customer loyalty and community support is what makes the restaurant feel like home. “Everyone knows my name when they come in here and they’re all so wonderful,” she said. “I love them all. They’re just a huge blessing.”

The diner’s menu has everything one would expect for breakfast, from egg dishes, to pancakes, to soup and sandwiches and doesn’t have a problem with customizing orders. “We cook everything to order and people can basically have anything they want and we’ll make it,” Renz said. She added that breakfast seems to be the favored meal, but her customers also enjoy the homemade soups and lunch specials. One of her signature dishes is the Shelia Scramble, with eggs, sausage, onion, green peppers and cheese, served with hash browns and toast. “People really like that one,” Renz said. “And anything with hollandaise sauce. My son told me I make a good one and to put it on more stuff, so now we have it with steak, corned-beef hash, omelets … not just the eggs benedict.” Shelia Mae’s Town Fryer is at 116 N.
