Wrap up winter with an exciting send off at the Nielsen’s Grand Finale of the AMSOIL Snocross Championship series March 15 to 17 at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva. The resort will host top professional snowmobile racers as they compete for the title of Snocross champion. Open to the public, this extreme winter sporting event is always a thrilling, high-energy weekend and the ultimate winter sports sendoff. and the official opening ceremony is at 7 p.m. Saturday (March 16) racing starts at 8 a.m. with pro races from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday (March 17) events start at 7 a.m. and the final pro races run from noon to 3 p.m. AMSOIL Championship Snocross is the featured national series within ISOC Racing (The International Series of Champions). The series brings together the finest professional and amateur athletes in the sport, in the most fan friendly venues in the United States and provides the best, most technically challenging tracks in the world. These facets combine to create the biggest, best Snocross racing show in the world, brought to fans by AMSOIL, the first in synthetics. ISOC is the premier snowmobiling racing organization in the world, providing safe, competitive racing for the top athletes and teams in the sport. Tickets to this year’s event can be purchased in advance online for a special price of $25 for a one-day pass and $45 for a three-day weekend pass. FINE DINING IN A CASUAL ATMOSPHERE
Two and a half years ago, Phil Gilardi opened Panino’s, a casual seafood restaurant open for lunch at 5628 Broadway in downtown Richmond, Illinois. It was just doors away from his upscale Italian restaurant, Paisano’s Italian Steakhouse. Panino’s provided a variety of items for lunch and had the menus posted on the wall. Orders were taken at the counter and then eaten at one of the tables in the room or in fine weather, out on the patio. That, however, is where the comparison to the traditional self serve restaurants ended. For the food at Panino’s was high end, made from scratch for the order, out of the finest ingredients. Most of these were seafood based and were enjoyed by both local residents and visitors to Richmond. when one’s feet needed a rest after shopping in downtown Richmond or when one was just ready for a casual, delicious lunch. Visitors who haven’t been to Panino’s recently are in for a big surprise when they return. No longer open for lunch on weekdays, the restaurant has undergone a radical change that includes a name change, a larger menu, and a redesigned dining room and the addition of a new bar. The restaurant’s name has been changed to Seaside Prime, to reflect the updated casual but elegant restaurant that features high-grade seafood and steaks. Entering the building even more changes are evident. The inside has been completely remodeled but still retains a rustic nautical look. With a high beamed ceiling, natural wood flooring and an array of interesting nautical accent pieces on the walls, it is warm and welcoming and gives one the feeling of being at the seaside, The casual yet elegant look continues into the back dining room and bar where the relaxing seaside décor follows through. Enjoy a drink at the bar while waiting to be seated. Cocktails are available as well as a wide selection of quality wines. While it is not yet warm enough to enjoy dinner out on the patio, it won’t be long before those days arrive. Imagine relaxing on the patio with a favorite cocktail or wine and enjoying a beautiful late spring or early summer evening followed by a delicious dinner. During the summer, music is played on the patio on weekend evenings. And last summer the staff entertained customers with their choreographed dance routine. According to members of the staff, it was a lot of fun and enjoyed by the customers. One no longer orders at the counter but is taken directly to the table by a hostess where the fine dining menu is presented. “This is the place to go when you want something nicer

than just a sandwich,” Gilardi said. “We have the best in fresh seafood.”
On the menu
Having worked with the same seafood purveyors for more than 30 years, he is always assured of receiving the freshest top quality seafood available on that day. “In addition to our regular menu, we have a special catch of the day that reflects the finest of the day’s fresh fish,” Gilardi said. A recent addition to the otherwise mostly seafood menu is steaks from the grill. “We serve only certified prime Black Angus beef,” Gilardi said. Listed on the menu are a 16-ounce New York strip steak, a 22-ounce rib eye, and a 10 to 12-ounce filet mignon. Lobster or crab legs may be added to the steak at market price for those who can’t decide if their choice should be seafood or one of the prime steaks. Appetizers include oysters or clams (raw on the half shell, baked or broiled), escargot, octopus, calamari or crab cakes. In addition to the seafood starters, the restaurant offers Arancini balls, an Italian favorite. They are risotto balls stuffed with four types of cheeses and served with a Béchamel sauce. New England Clam Chowder and Seafood Bisque are also available daily for the soup lovers. Picking a seafood entrée may be difficult. Choices range from lobster with crab cake or Alaska King Crab Legs at market price to seafood boils and cioppino. For the person who can’t make a choice, the seafood boil or the cioppino include all the usual favorites. Crab, shrimp, mussels and clams in the seafood boil paired with sweet corn and potatoes. Or try the fresh cioppino, a seafood broth with shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari and fresh fish of the day, an Italian favorite and sure to please. For those looking for a lighter meal, a variety of salads from a house side salad to a full Crab Louie or Seafood Salad may fill the bill. The Crab Louie salad include crabmeat, hard boiled eggs combined with tomato, asparagus, iceberg lettuce and topped with 8

The menu also includes some of Paisano’s Classic dishes and a variety of pasta paired with various seafood choices. Their hand-held items include a lobster roll, overflowing with fresh lobster meat tossed lightly with a mayo tarragon sauce and served with lettuce on a New England hot dog bun, reminiscent of the lobster rolls found on the east coast. Desserts include the traditional Italian Tiramisu and Cannoli along with other treats.
How it all started Becoming a successful restaurateur was not in the mind of Gilardi as he started his professional career. “I was a hair stylist. My mom was my receptionist and her sister was my manicurist. We were located near Marriott Lincolnshire so it is not surprising

that I had the opportunity to do the hair of many stars playing there. Jacquelyn Smith, Annette Funicello, Cloris Leachman, Rita Moreno, and Susan St. James were among my customers,” Gilardi said. “Then a space became available near my shop and we decided to try to open a restaurant. It was a small space, comfortably seating only 28 people. We served about 100 meals a day and we were a success. This was in the late 70s.” After the success of their small restaurant, they opened the first Paisano’s in 1984 located in Vernon Hills. “There were four generations of our family working there. My gram was the head chef with my mom and her sister assisting, while I ran the restaurant,” Gilardi said. “We remained there for 25 years, always as a family run business. We sold the business 13 years ago. “In 2006 we opened Paisano’s in Richmond and it was an immediate success. Panino’s was successful for over two years and now Seaside Prime is making its debut.” The same principals have been followed in all Gilardi’s restaurants. Fine quality food, using only the best ingredients artfully prepared by his staff are all that is served. Friendly competent employees who greet customers with a smile and provide excellent service make a meal at Seafood Prime a treat. “Many of our employees have been with us for 15 to 20 years. Victor Maris has been one of our chefs for 36 years. Victor has worked in the kitchen in Vernon Hills and continues to work at both our Richmond locations,” Gilardi said. For Gilardi, he enjoys when his customers stop to say hello and said many of his customers repeatedly return to enjoy another

Delavan Train Show returns March 9 and 10
The 12th Annual Delavan Train Show rides the rails in downtown Delavan March 9 and 10. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday that weekend. Featuring more than 40 model train layouts spread throughout downtown Delavan in 18 locations with interactive fun for all ages. Begin the tour of the more than 40 train exhibits, many with active operating layouts, at the American Legion Hall, 111 S. 2nd St. Visitors can get their “tickets” punched at each of the 18 locations throughout downtown for a chance to win prizes. The tickets are available at each of the locations. Stroll through downtown as each location is within walking distance, or hop on the trolley to get around in style. The trackless train continues to take children on rides through Tower Park. New this year will be exhibits honoring Delavan’s Circus history. Each exhibitor’s goal is to entertain visitors of all ages and have placed a priority of creating fun, family friendly layouts. While some layouts have seekand-find activities, others have buttons that operate accessories on the layout. Some layouts even give visitors a chance to be the train engineer. The Delavan Train Show continues to grow every year, with last year attracting more than 6,000 visitors. After arriving in the New York area the Irish discovered corned beef, an inexpensive meat enjoyed by their Jewish neighbors and they adopted it to eat with their cabbage and potatoes. With St. Patrick’s Day this month it is time to make plans to celebrate the Irish. There are many restaurants in the Lake Geneva area that will be serving the traditional food and drink that many seek. Or if an at home party is being planned there are also places to purchase high quality corned beef to prepare at home and the Irish beers and other beverages needed for the celebration. he idea of establishing a brew-pub in the old bank building on the East Troy Village Square was something that came to Ann Zess more than five years ago and came to fruition at the end of December. Ann and Ted Zess, of East Troy, bought the former FirstMerit Bank building at 2905 Main St. and began renovating the space in the summer of 2017. The East Troy Brewery opened just after Christmas in 2018. “The feeling was always, once we build it, they will come,” Ann said. “We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Things were crazy for a while, but to see it now, it’s just so worth it.” Much of the craziness Ann refers to came in the form of unexpected construction problems and delays with the rehab of the

more than 100-year-old building. The Zesses had planning on opening the brewpub in July of 2018, but ending up needing more time to address the structural issues that popped up in the remodel. “It’s definitely been a challenge but our managers have been great, working 100 hours a week to get this off the ground,” Ann said. “They are truly amazing and know what works and doesn’t, so we listen to them – like the decision to start with a smaller menu and build on it so the kitchen staff wasn’t overwhelmed at first.” The brewery’s menu, created by Executive Chef Brent Fiedor, includes appetizers such as their signature beerbattered, deep-fried cheese curds, Hometown Sausage Kitchen bacon wrapped dates, crispy duck wings and Charcuterie boards with house-made meats and local cheeses. For an entrée, guests have their choice of pizza, burger, macaroni and cheese, New York strip steak, Cobb salad or salmon. “We’ll be adding onto the menu over the next several months and we started a Friday-night fish fry,” Ann said. The restaurant also has a kids’ menu with pizza, burgers, chicken fingers, pasta and macaroni and cheese. “We’re a family friendly place,” Ann said. “We have something for everyone and a great, relaxed atmosphere.” The drink menu for the brew-pub features seven house-brewed beers on tap along with a wine list and cocktail options. House-made soft drinks are also available. The head brewer is Ryan Hammerel. “Ryan’s been great and our beers are wonderful,” Ann said. “Right now we’re collaborating with D14 brewery and we’re making an English nut-brown ale in there today. I can’t wait for it to be released.”

The East Troy Brewery is at 2905 Main St. on the historical East Troy Village Square. The old bank building was completely renovated to house the brew-pub and apartments on the second level.
At a total cost of more than $2.5 million to create the brewery, the Zesses were aided with a $250,000 loan from the Village of East Troy revolving loan fund to help with construction and a $250,000 Community Development Investment Grant from the state. The project also had private investors along with the Zesses. “The project had a life of its own,” Ann said. “We used as many local people as we could and it shows in the high-quality work. I can’t say enough about James R. Taylor and Sons, our construction contractor and one of our investors and all the other local
businesses we worked with.” Forming local partnerships is one of the brewery’s calling cards, with locally sourced cheeses from Hill Valley Dairy in Lake Geneva, meats from Hometown Sausage Kitchen in East Troy, and room at the bar for mead from The Hive Taproom in East Troy. “We want to showcase what the area has to offer,” Ann said. “And we want to share. We got a beer out to Alpine Valley Resort this week, too.”
Future plans
While the inside of the brewery is up and running, the Zesses are still working on the landscaping and outdoor beer garden for summer. “All of that will be done over the next few months and it will expand our space when the weather warms,” Ann said. “We’re going to have sidewalk dining, we’ll be applying for the permit from the village soon, and that will be so cool for the events on the square like the bike race.” The Zesses are hopeful the community continues to embrace the brewery and it becomes a destination spot. “People seem to really like what we have here and that’s the reason we did this,” Ann said. “We’re a part of this community and we wanted to help promote East Troy and find a way to introduce people to the area. Julie Taylor and Jim Gerlach, who live in another historic home next door, purchased it in 2016 and have been returning it to its original condition.

rederick Willard Isham was one of Elkhorn’s most prominent residents. Born Feb. 23, 1850 in Sugar Creek Township, he moved to Elkhorn in 1879. He attended Elkhorn schools and Whitewater Normal School, from which he graduated in June 1875. After his graduation he was elected superintendent of schools for Walworth County, was re-elected in 1877 and held the office for four years. In 1879 he was Frederick Isham

elected secretary of the State Teachers Association “and thus acquired an extensive and most pleasant acquaintance with the teachers of the state.” He had met Juliett Weed while attending the Institute of County Superintendent Montague in Allen’s Grove in 1869. They were married in 1878. It wasn’t long after that she was forced by ill health to give up her teaching career. In 1880, partly in order to help find palliatives for his wife’s illnesses, Isham engaged in the drug business in Elkhorn and conducted it successfully for ten years, before retiring to join First National Bank of Elkhorn as assistant cashier until William Conger retired, at which point Isham became cashier. (A cashier isn’t a bank teller, but the chief officer in charge of the bank.) He served on the village board for several terms and on the local board of education for a number of years and was a founding member and secretary of the Old Settlers society of Walworth County for seven years. That organization later became the Walworth County Historical Society. When he was 40 years old, Isham began construction of a house befitting one of the city’s first citizens.
The site he chose at 16 N. Church St. had a nice view of the tree-shaded courthouse square. All he needed to do was move the house that occupied the space – which he did. An unusual feature of his 4,000-square-foot house that took eight years to finish was a master bedroom suite just off the sitting room on the main floor. He had designed the house that way because his wife, Juliett, had been in ill health for years and wasn’t able to climb stairs.  Unfortunately, Juliett never lived in the house. She died in 1891 at the age of 40. In 1893, two years after Juliett’s death from pneumonia, Isham married Ruth Wales, “daughter of an influential citizen of Elkhorn.” She had also graduated from Whitewater Normal school and afterward taught for a year in La Crosse, another in LaPorte, Ind., and then spent four years, 1872-76, teaching in Argentina. The couple had no children. Isham died in 1933, outliving his second wife by three years. Before he passed away, he sold the house to the Reed family, who owned a furniture store and undertaking business. They converted the house into a funeral home and lived upstairs. In order to do so, they
reconfigured the rooms, removing an ornate staircase and a bay window on the landing so that they could bring caskets in from the outside, something that had been impossible with the turns made by the stairs. Many years later, the house was used as a day care center and then as offices. Each owner made extensive changes to the floor plan, removing and installing walls to suit their needs. When Julie Taylor and Jim Gerlach bought the house in 2016, they set about to return it to its original state. They hired Joe Dougherty of Six Sigma Services as the general contractor, whom they say has done an amazing job of bringing the house back to its original state. “We were fortunate to have albums of photos, newspaper clippings and Fred Isham’s diary,” says Taylor. She and Mary Alder, who is also a descendant of the Isham family, pooled their resources to determine what the house had looked like when it was built. Isham’s diary includes a carefully drawn plan of the main floor, to which they referred in order to decide where walls and doors had been. As they removed layers of floorcoverings, they discovered where

the original walls had been and constructed new ones to match. When they took up the linoleum in the upstairs bedrooms, they discovered wide pine floorboards, instead of the narrow hardwood on the first floor. The boards had originally been painted tan, but showed a rectangular patch in the middle of the room that was unfinished, or painted gray. According to Taylor, people in the 19th century didn’t want to waste paint on the part of the floor that would be covered by an area rug. Visitors entered the house by the front door, which led into a vestibule with a built-in bench on which they could wait to see Fred, who conducted various kinds of business from his library at home. If the visitor went straight in through the vestibule, he found himself in the sitting room, which we would call a parlor or living room. The dining room was to the west of the library. A door from the dining room led into the butler’s pantry, and the kitchen. A room behind the butler’ s pantry was designated the gasoline room. Completely lined with tin, it was where they filled lamps with gasoline or kerosene, which, if it caught fire, wouldn’t spread to the rest of the house. The couple have put a furnace and air conditioning unit in the attic instead of relying on the 150-year-old boiler in the basement to heat the upstairs. A modern HVAC system had been installed at some point to heat and cool the main floor. Removing radiators from the upstairs bedrooms turned out to be more of a task than they anticipated. “No matter what Jim tried, he couldn’t get them to come apart,” said Julie. “The contractor used a specially-made saw blade and cut them into pieces.” There is a wrap-around porch on the main floor. They replaced the floor and ceiling, which resulted in a shower of dead critters that had made the ceiling their home over the years. Jim chiseled all of the mortar from between the stonework and hired Jeff and Esther Gehrke of Jeff’s Masonry in Burlington to replace it with “grape- vine” mortar instead of the usual flat appearance. “The grapevine mortar consists of a raised line like a – you guessed it, a grapevine – between the stones,” she said. “It’s a lost art that the Gehrkes have resurrected, using special tools and knowhow. It’s very time-consuming, but adds a subtle touch that is true to the original stonework.” Taylor ordered new energy-efficient leaded diamond-pane windows to replace the ones in the sitting room that had become warped over the years. In fact, they replaced all of the windows, adhering

to the style of the originals. She also ordered new switch plates for the pushbutton light switches throughout the house. All of the bathroom fixtures have been replaced with modern ones in Victorian style, including pedestal sinks. The kitchen, however, is decidedly modern, with new appliances, an island and cupboards. There was a back stairway that led to the kitchen from an upstairs bedroom in which the family’ s house- keeper lived. “Her name was Carrie and she was more a part of the family than a servant,” Taylor says. An upstairs bathroom features a new clawfoot bathtub that replaces the cast iron one that they removed. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
The couple haven’t decided whether they will live in the house, use it as a Bed and Breakfast or just sell it. With the master bedroom on the main floor and four bedrooms upstairs, it is admirably suited to be a B&B. They now live next door in what was the original Elkhorn schoolhouse, but was converted into a private residence many decades ago. The school was originally described as a plain 40x40-foot brick building, but is now one of the Christmas Card Town’s most ornate and attractive structures. Taylor and Gerlach have been working on the Isham house restoration for two years. Although it looks as though there is much to do, they hope to have it finished this spring.

When buying a home, a complete and comprehensive inspection performed by a reputable inspection service may help avoid any expensive surprises after purchase. Tri County Home Inspection is the largest inspection company in Wisconsin covering Williams Bay, Delavan, Burlington, Walworth, Fontana on Geneva Lake and Lake Geneva and is locally owned. “About 60 percent of our inspections are in the Lake Geneva area,” Marjarla said. Over the last decade, Tri County Home Inspection has completed thousands of home inspections on homes from 300-square-foot condos to 20,000-square-foot lakefront homes. Mold, structural problems and electrical problems account for most of the concerns in homes. “All homes have defects,” Marjala said. “We take the inspection seriously to protect our clients. Our job is to uncover structural, mechanical, and safety issues.” Often people are unrealistic in what they expect in the home they are purchasing, Marjarla said. “If a client is purchasing a 15 year old home, it still needs to be 100 percent structurally sound, safe and healthy,” he said. “However it is unrealistic to expect sellers to repair or replace mechanicals that are in good working order simply because they are old.

“Self-completed home owner repairs are often the cause of many problems that are uncovered. Homeowners often try to fix things that they may not be knowledgeable about and end up not doing the job to code,” Marjarla continued. “We have seen cases where additional insulation was added, a needed job, but in doing so the homeowner inadvertently covered the soffits and vents causing mold to form in the attic area. Roof leaks will also contribute to the growth of mold throughout the home.

A thorough inspection of a home’s fireplace is important on a regular basis. Inspectors will check for chimney damage, creosote buildup and invasion by birds or squirrels. It is important that the chimney is working properly and draws the smoke out of the house.
“Although mold is found in all homes, the concern is whether it is a form of toxic mold, scientifically known as Stachybotrys” Marjarla added. “Most of the mold in the attic area is hidden from view.” Also responsible for mold are bathroom ventilation fans not properly vented or lack of attic ventilation that does not remove the moisture and allows the mold to form and grow on the roof sheathing. Mold is commonly seen in the bathroom, especially around the bathtub and windows, Marjarla said. Roof leaks will also contribute to the growth of mold, not only in the bathroom but
throughout the home as moisture is trapped in the walls and insulation. “Removing bathroom mold can be done by the homeowner, if the area is under 10 square feet using a mold cleaning detergent approved by the Environmental Protection Agency,” Marjarla said. This cleaner may be purchased at a hardware store. Some homeowners try to remove mold by cleaning with bleach and water. “This is not the right way to remove the mold. The bleach will remove the surface mold but it will not reach the spores, which are below the surface. Thus the mold will continue to grow unseen and spread to the air resulting in an unhealthy environment,” Marjarla said. “When we conduct a home inspection, we have the ability to test for mold onsite. If we see mold in the attic, we will swab it to identify the specific mold type and have a full lab report within 24 hours. The area is also inspected with a moisture meter or thermal imaging cameras to discover the mold’s source.”

Tri County Inspection will also note exterior water movement and potential drainage problems, which may cause costly structural problems with the home’s foundation. Patios or driveways may be tilted toward the home. Then, instead of draining water away from the home, it flows toward the home’s foundation, Marjarla said. “Discovering and correcting electrical problems before selling the house or moving into a home is important for the safety of your family. Improperly connected electrical wiring is unsafe and may cause a fire in the home,” Marjala said. Sometimes repairs and additions to the electrical circuits may be done incorrectly. Wires can also deteriorate over years from ageing or from chewing by rodents that have made their way into the walls. The home inspector will make certain that the electric box and wires are according to code. Improperly wired lines need to be replaced immediately, Marjarla said. Homes located near water, especially those on the lakefront tend to have more difficulty with water damage from flooding or from improper drainage as the water table may be closer to the foundation. These homes are already surrounded by damp soil, which may leak more moisture into the home.

They need to be cleaned and checked to be certain that there isn’t any waste leaking into the ground or the lake. and side of the pan within a few seconds and quickly came to a full boil. “The induction cook top requires the use of magnetic pans,” Schinke said. “The heating element is electromagnetic and requires a magnetic bottom to the pan to heat. Since the heat goes from the burner directly to the pan, the cook top stays cool to the touch. It only emits heat to the area covered by the pan.” Schinke went on to demonstrate the uniqueness of this cook top. Taking a $20 bill from his wallet, he placed it between the cook top and the pan. It did not burn as the money did not have a magnetic base to absorb the heat. Induction cook tops are slightly more expensive than the usual cook tops and they require a new set of cookware. Customers looking for an upscale stove frequently look at the Wolff or the Samsung lines. These professional stoves, some with extra burners from the traditional four, are a favorite. Five burners or a grill are expected in the top-line stoves. “Today’s clients often request a stove with a gas cook top and an electric oven,” Schinke said. “The electric oven is known for a better performance as it distributes a more even heat.” Everyone is used to seeing microwave ovens mounted above the stove, but there are other options for microwave placement. Schinke displayed a new microwave known as a microwave drawer. It appears to be just a deep drawer with food placed into it from the top rather than a traditional front microwave access. Schinke said the drawer style microwave is more versatile as it can be mounted under an island or under or above a wall oven.

Changing tastes “The colors and styles of kitchen appliances are constantly changing,” Schinke said. “For the last several years, stainless steel appliances have been the finish of choice.” That is now starting to change. New stainless finishes that are smudge proof are popular with families. Black stainless, black slate and a matte white finish are among the upcoming finishes. Refrigerators have gone through a variety of styles over the years, Schinke said. From the freezer on top and refrigerator on the bottom to the sideby-side refrigerator popular with a generation of homeowners, things have evolved. Once the addition of water and ice distribution was a sign of a truly fine refrigerator. Now styles have changed again and the most desired type is a French door refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom and a water and ice dispenser. “Since most people use the refrigerator section more than the freezer, it is convenient to have it all on the top. People go into the freezer less often,” Schinke said. And for those looking for a little more? “One of the newer high-end refrigerators, known as a café refrigerator, also has a Keurig attachment to make a cup of hot coffee,” Schinke said. The real piece de resistance in refrigerators was the Samsung model that includes an electronic note pad on which one can write notes to other family members, Schinke said. Like any good computer people can pull up the weather or even create a photo slide show.

Schinke said Lyle’s was opened by his father, Lyle Schinke in 1954 out of his home. “He later purchased the building at 17 S. Washington in Elkhorn where the business continues to grow.” Lyle’s is a family business with his son Tom joining him in 1973. His daughter-in-law Sue joined the business in 1996. Lyle was well known for his knowledge about the appliances he sold and also for the service that he offered to his customers, service that continues today. Lyle continued to actively work in the store until his retirement in 2006 when Tom and his wife, Sue, took over. Now as owners of Lyle’s, Tom and Sue have brought in other family members including their daughter to continue the work that Lyle began 65 years ago. Lyle passed away in January of this year at the age of 92 but his legacy lives on as his family continues to offer the residents of southern Wisconsin the best in home appliances and the best in repair service. Lighting is latest remodeling trend Growing options generate demand for creatively lighting spaces by Jason Arndt While homeowners STAFF WRITER continue to seek ways to create open living spaces, another remodeling trend has emerged recently, according to Jean Kruzan. Kruzan, owner of J Kruzan Construction and Remodeling in Lake Geneva, has started seeing a demand for diverse lighting schemes within the home. “The trends continue to be opening up spaces for larger living areas, knocking walls down between a kitchen and living room, that trend continues,” said Kruzan, who has been in the construction and remodeling industry for about two decades. “Now the trend is we are doing a lot of electrical and different kinds of lighting that we haven’t seen before.” Lighting styles and schemes, she said, include LED lights and under cabinet lighting. Kruzan, whose company utilizes several subcontractors, noted lighting has become an emphasis for customers. “Lighting has become a really important part of remodeling these days,” said Kruzan. Kruzan said she uses an electrical subcontractor along the way to help locate the latest items on the market.
“It really isn’t a challenge, it is just about looking for a good electrician – which we do have – and finding all of the new things on the market and being able to utilize them,” she said. As for under-cabinet lighting, she said the new feature is a streamlined approach, allowing electrical wiring to become “invisible.” However, under-cabinet lighting is just one aspect, and includes several other options. “Under cabinet lighting is very streamlined and it is what we have been doing lately,” she said. “There all kinds of choices with the lighting.”
Kitchen, bathroom trends
Farm kitchens, she said, have also been a continuous demand. The style involves a rustic look, consisting of natural woods, and cabinetry. “Farm kitchens are still big, we do a lot of farm kitchens,” she said. “Farm kitchens would be a lot of wood cabinetry, a lot of natural wood, accents.” Additionally, the kitchen trend includes an apron-style sink and two types of flooring, either hardwood or luxury vinyl tile floors.
Demand for luxury vinyl tiling has been increasing in recent years. “Luxury vinyl tile flooring is a product that keeps growing and growing,” she said. Her construction company also helps with bathroom remodeling, which has seen a rising trend in custom-built showers, including spray heads. Other trends include specific textures, notably reclaimed wood and barn doors, she said. “More remodeling projects these days involve textures, so many different types of textures,” she said. “Reclaimed barn wood, barn door, those are the types of textures.” Kruzan, along with her staff, have also seen stonework, like for fireplaces, as another area where they have seen an uptick in customer demand. Ingersoll touts benefits of panelized home construction When Greg Ingersoll got his first job in construction, a part-time summer gig at the age of 14, he said he knew he had found what he wanted to do with his life. “I had previously thought I might become a teacher during the school year and do construction in the summer but when I got that job, I fell in love with it,” he said. Ingersoll has now been in the business for 29 years including everything from building, remodeling and land development to property management and working for appraisers. About 18 months ago, after being recruited followed by extensive research – and some soul searching – Ingersoll Home Builders joined Wausau Homes and Ingersoll became the sole Wausau Homes builder in Walworth County. Because there is not currently a Wausau Homes builder in Racine County, he splits projects with a couple other builders in the area. He said one of the main advantages to joining Wausau Homes was the list of resources he can access. “We have a tremendous network and support in all aspects of home building including sales, design, management, engineering, building crews and materials,” he said. The agreement between Ingersoll and Wausau Homes basically states he cannot build a new home that’s not a Wausau Homes design. He said Wausau Homes are all custom-designed and custom-built but are done in a “panelized system so not exposed to the elements for eight to 12 weeks. That allows us to do other things… digging the hole, setting the foundation, and so on. Sometimes, we set a home in one day, and we can frame through the winter,” Ingersoll explained. ith years of use, tile and grout, and even the finish on the bathtub, become worn, hazy and stained. Sometimes mold forms. Because this happens slowly, it often goes unnoticed by homeowners until one day it really pops and they realize something needs to be done. So where does one start? Is it necessary to remove the tile and start over? Not necessarily, but it is time to call Grout Experts. He added the grout business is a growing field as homeowners are often opting to repair rather than replace. Ferrara said the business had become somewhat a lost art, because contractors encouraged people to replace rather than to do the tedious work of re-grouting or cleaning the tiles. Replacing an entire bathroom is costly, often in the $20,000 range depending on the quality one wants to put into the room. “That isn’t a cost many families can handle in today’s economy,” Ferrara said. So calling on Grout Experts might be the answer. “A shower that would cost $2,300 to replace can usually be re-caulked and grouted for around $500 making it look like new and pleasing the family and their budget,” Ferrara explained. inn Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 175th year and is planning a series of events to honor its commitment to the community. Located near the shores of Lake Geneva, Linn Church (as it is referenced locally) is one of only a handful of regional churches that can claim such a long, strong history. In following, 2019 will be a year filled with celebratory events at the church, all open to the community at large. Some of the church’s outreach programs – like the Linn Kidds free SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
after-school childcare program for area families held on Wednesdays and early school release days – will also welcome expanded participation by area residents and other community partners this year. The kickoff event to the yearlong celebration was Feb. 15, when Linn Church hosted a Valentine’s Feast for the Open Arms Free Clinic. The meal was free and donations for the clinic were gratefully accepted. Open Arms is a volunteer-driven, donor-supported, non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving hundreds of lowincome and uninsured residents of Walworth County with much-needed

primary and specialty medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health services, as well as lab and pharmaceutical assistance. Other events this year include: • Spring Up Sunday! at 10 a.m. on March 17. Warm up March with this special spring edition of the church’s seasonal Pack the House worship and music community event. Free childcare available for under 3, if desired. Refreshments after service. • Easter services at 8 and 10 a.m. on April 21. Linn Church welcomes one and all to either of their two musicfilled Easter services. The 8 a.m. service non-traditional service is held outdoors around the fire pit (or inside, if inclement). The more traditional music-filled Easter service is held in the
Sanctuary at 10 a.m. Enjoy a free and festive brunch and refreshments in Fellowship Hall between the services, from 9-10 a.m. Additionally, families with young children won’t want to miss the free Eggstra-Special Easter Egg Hunt held on the church grounds on April 20. Linn Church’s widely renowned rummage sale, which originated as an auction, has been going strong in one form or another for 65 years. Hundreds of shoppers come from throughout the Lakes area and Illinois border communities for this two-day shopping extravaganza – which ends with the amazing Fill-A-Bag-for-$5 event!
The sale offers buildings full of deep deals on furniture, accessories, clothes for adults and kids, toys, holiday decorations, household goods, fine “treasures” and more. Every cent supports the operations and outreach of Linn Church. Rummage donations are also welcomed throughout the year – call the church office at 262248-1588 for drop-off/pick up details. The church’s June to December anniversary program of public events was still being finalized as of press time, but plans include a vintage car and tractor show, old-fashioned ice cream social and the Fabulous Fall Rummage Sale. Linn Church – then and now Linn Presbyterian Church was originally named First Presbyterian Church of Linn and Hebron and was founded in September of 1844 to serve rural communities along the Wisconsin and Illinois border, in the early days of settlement. Linn had only been formally established in January of that same year, and Hebron would be incorporated later. Wisconsin itself would not become a state until 1848, considered a territory until that time. It was a time of pioneering change and opportunity in the region, and the church played a vital role for residents of the wide-flung region. While early congregants met in each other’s homes across an expansive area, by 1849 church meetings were held in their newly built parsonage on the grounds of what was and still is the Linn-Hebron Cemetery, located between the two towns. A formal church building was built in Hebron, Illinois, in 1866-67. In 1922, following a congregational shift to Wisconsin, that main church building in Hebron was moved over the border by horse-pull to Zenda, near Linn. Two generations later, when a bigger structure was needed for the growing congregation of the 1970s, church members Walter and Mary York donated 10 acres of their family’s farmland in Linn for a building site, on a picturesque hillside looking north to Geneva Lake. In 1978, Linn Presbyterian Church moved to a new contemporary-styled brick and wood building atop that hill, where it still stands today. The church’s address is W3335 Willow Road, near the intersection of Highway B and South Shore Road. The original 1867 church was eventually purchased by a private entity and still stands in Zenda today. Today’s Linn Presbyterian Church (often referred to as Linn Church) is known for upbeat, thought-provoking services that take a more contemporary approach to traditional worship, blending inspirational sermons with dynamic audio-visuals and joyful interludes of music and fellowship. The church’s musical resources include a

modern praise team vocal-and-instrumental group, as well as a traditional mixedpart choir, a men’s choir and a handbell choir. The church is active in a variety of mission programs, locally, regionally and internationally; there are adult studies and other group programs as well. For teenagers, the church has a youth group and a high school youth mission trip each summer. Pastor-led children’s sermons, Sunday school classes, confirmation classes, childcare and a summer vacation Bible school program round out the family offerings. Also available to all area residents regardless of church membership is a free after-school care program at the church, called Linn Kidds, held on Wednesdays and school early release days. In addition, baptisms and nuptials are offered both member and non-member families throughout the year. Founded by 29 pioneering farmers in 1844, today the medium-sized congregation has diverse life and work backgrounds SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
hailing from a wide variety of area towns, lakes and rural communities. Connecting its past to the present, the church features two large wood crosses crafted from barn timbers donated by local farming families, one at the exterior front of the church and one rising from the sanctuary altar. The church’s stained-glass windows represent the colors of the Spirit and were created by lakes-area artist Valerie Kragenbrink. And not to be forgotten is the 800-pound bell in the church’s bell tower, which was commissioned for the 1922 Zenda church building and later moved to its current home in Linn. It continues to ring out every Sunday for services, as it has for so many generations past. A written and pictorial history of Linn Presbyterian Church’s 175 years, compiled by Lauren Asplund of Walworth, will be published in September 2019, and will be available through the church office. It provides a fascinating insight into the church and related local history over nearly two centuries.

10-year-old boy named Diego. “We clicked right away and became really close by the time I had to come back to the U.S.,” Dickey said. “When I left Cape Town, I felt like I had not accomplished what I had set out for.” Dickey just couldn’t stop thinking about Diego and the children she met 8,000 miles away. She said she couldn’t go anywhere else in the world without checking on these children. When she returned to South Africa, things had changed drastically. “Diego was in a really terrible living situation,” Lindsey said. “He wasn’t enrolled in school, was living and working in a gangster drug house and looked very unhealthy. “I spent the whole month running around the western Cape trying to find a better living situation, but they were all dead ends. I decided that if no one was going to look after this child, then I would.” So, Dickey returned to the United States and was determined to save Diego. She uprooted her lifestyle to earn enough money to get back to South Africa and make a real difference. “I got three jobs, sold my car, quit my studies and gave all my belongings away,” Dickey said. “Three months later, I was back in Cape Town with a registered NPO, funding for a year and a visa.”
• Humble beginnings The Glo House started with Diego and Mercy, only two children, and has blossomed into eight full-time children, who go to school during the week and have opportunities to visit family and take part in recreation like surfing on the weekends. Glo (pronounced ha-loo) is an Afrikaans word that means “believe.” “The children used to always say “Glo,” and it just stuck. It also stands for growth, love and opportunities,” Dickey said. Dickey is listed as founder and director, and Darron Nicholson is the director of OceanHood, a community outreach branch that has a surfing team of 20 children. Dickey says everything is based on parental consent, and the Glo House consists of a home, an education advancement center and a community outreach program. The goal is to give kids a chance to grow. “The home serves as a place of refuge for children who are forced to deal with gang violence, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of educational support and sanitary or safe housing,” Dickey said. “Each child is valued and encouraged to strive toward reaching their potential both academically and of stewards of the Earth.” “Our goal isn’t to tear families apart. We give children and families a chance to grow separately and come together in a healthy way.”

Lindsey Dickey gives Diego a big hug to celebrate her decision to become his caregiver. Dickey was so moved by Diego’s plight and the lack of resources to help him she took matters into her own hands, uprooting her life and returning to South Africa to care for him.
• A new Diego Diego has pulled a complete 180 since meeting Dickey. He recently celebrated his 13th birthday and is first in his class. “Diego had gone from rarely going to school, stealing, getting into fights and barely passing,” Dickey said. “Now he’s in a new school where he gets straight A’s. He takes his schoolwork very seriously and dreams of being a doctor. He has come full circle and is a great influence on the other children.” So what is the most rewarding part of Lindsey’s work? “It’s when you see their growth,” Dickey said. “Children who have suffered brain injuries from doing hardcore drugs are now winning social upliftment awards. The hardest part is watching a child throw away opportunities because they miss the thrill of township ways of living.” “The reality is some kids don’t want to better themselves, and it’s sad to see their potential being wasted.” SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
Dickey has been so busy, she hasn’t been back to Wisconsin much, but family has visited her in South Africa. She plans to come home in October. Dickey, still only 21 years old, hopes to buy a larger piece of land to house up to 50 children, and she hopes to eventually open Glo houses in other countries. At times, Dickey still can’t believe how far she’s come. “It’s crazy how you have one plan for your life but somehow you get led down another path,” Dickey said. “I am extremely grateful for all we have achieved and for all of our support. I think when you work for something you are passionate about, you don’t notice all the hard work until you have a moment to really think. I often think of where we were in the beginning and all of the uphill climbs, but it is definitely worth it. “We still fight battles and make sacrifices, but it’s only the beginning for the Glo House.” For more information or to make a donation, visit www.theglohouse.com.

Local balloon artist wins Designer of the Year award Wisconsin Balloon Décor owner, Sara Meyer of Lake Geneva, returned home on Feb. 4 after competing for 13 hours to become the 2019 Balloon Designer of the Year. The title was awarded in St. Louis at the biannual FLOAT convention, an international event for professional balloon decorators. Meyer is the first person from Wisconsin to win the award. The competition spanned two days and required Meyer to inflate more than 1,000 balloons by herself during that time. From colorful sculptures to wedding decor, each area had a theme and a time limit. Meyer has been in business for three years. More than 450 delegates from around the world attended the weeklong convention, complete with classes and team builds consisting of tens of thousands of balloons. “The achievement and education will take my work to the next level. I’m excited to take on more ambitious installations and projects this year. There are so many things I want to try!” Meyer said. Meyer has been invited back, this time as an instructor, for the next convention. Meyer and Wisconsin Balloon Décor specialize in weddings and corporate events.
