FARMERS MARKETS DRIVE TRAFFIC TO THE HEART OF COMMUNITIES
When springtime arrives in Wisconsin, it signals the beginning of a Wisconsin staple – the small-town farmers markets. Often a weekly event in places like Burlington, Lake Geneva, Elkhorn and East Troy, the markets give locals and visitors a chance to enjoy the community and sample its offerings. The Burlington Farmers Market kicked off its 10th season in May and although the weather didn’t cooperate with the planned kids’ activities for the day, organizer Carol Reed said the first market day of the year was a success. “We had a big birthday celebration and planned things like a bounce house for the children, which will have to be rescheduled, but even without it the kids had a great time. Just watching them have fun playing in the park was great,” Reed said. Burlington’s market is in Wehmhoff Square on the corner of Washington and Pine streets in the downtown district. The market runs 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays May through October.
Expanded for 2018
Reed said the market has been updated and expanded this year, with about 25 to 30 vendors scheduled each week. “Last year we were hearing comments from people that the market was getting small and it wasn’t worth the time to come out to it anymore,” Reed said. “So, last fall, I got to work on finding new vendors and with the help of the board of directors, we’ve got a lot of new things.” Reed said growing the market was critical for its success and to help bring in more visitors to the city. She said that while she couldn’t speak for local businesses, the comments organizers hear is that many who attend the market also shop elsewhere in the city. “They make a trip of it,” Reed said. “People have said things like they needed to drop off a pair of shoes at Itzin’s and they scheduled it for Thursday so they could hit the market too.”
Many of the area farmers by Tracy Ouellette markets have added special events & Heather Ruenz to their weekly fairs, including the Burlington market, which has STAFF WRITERS live music every week and several events planned this season. Other events planned for the Burlington market include classic car shows on the third Thursday of every month, celebrating June Dairy Month and a corn roast in August.
Farm-to-table event set
New this year will be the Sept. 22 farm-to-table dinner, a ticketed event on a local Burlington farm. More information on that event will be available in summer. The Burlington market is a “producer market” Reed said. “So that means the people who sell there need to produce what they make,” Reed said. The market offers in-season produce, breads, bakery, meat, cheese, fresh and smoked fish, artisan soaps and crafts, jewelry and more. “Some of the vendors will vary from week to week, but many of them will be there all season long,” Reed said. To promote the market, Reed said organizers are offering weekly and monthly drawing for “Market Money” to people to use at the market. At the end of the season they will have a grand-prize drawing for two tickets to the fall farm-to-table dinner. of Commerce sponsors the market, which also is celebrating its 10th season this year. “We love our farmers market because it makes the square come alive every Friday for 20 weeks, May through October,” Chamber Director Vanessa Lenz said. “It not only gives people a chance to buy fresh, seasonal food and artisan goods but also gives them a dose of community. It’s a chance to get together every Friday and I think East Troy really wants and needs that.” The market in East Troy is just one of the popular events the chamber sponsors on the Village Square each summer. A few years back, the chamber added First Fridays to the market line up. “We kicked off our popular East Troy’s First Fridays series three years ago because we wanted to add an extra incentive to draw more people to the market in East Troy and encourage regulars to hang out on the square longer,” Lenz said. Each First Friday, May through November, features a showcase event with surrounding local businesses collaborating to bring an afternoon and evening of fun. The First Fridays kicked off with the May the Fourth Be With You event on May 4. “First Fridays debuted as a way to celebrate everything our town has to offer and reconnect locals with the businesses we have here. It’s been great for boosting business and drawing visitors to East Troy. We’ve had awesome crowds and each event we keep growing and growing,” Lenz said.
Keeping it local
The Friday farmers market offers local farm and horticultural 8
products, locally produced specialty foods, local arts and crafts and live music in East Troy downtown district, which the chamber works to promote in many ways. “Our most notable landmark is the bandstand at East Troy Village Square Park, which has a long history as the backdrop for community events like the East Troy Bluegrass Festival, Friday Farmers Markets, East Troy’s First Fridays, Brewfest and Memorial Day Weekend Corn and Brat Roast,” Lenz said. “The beautiful park, originally a gift from the village’s founders, has become a popular destination.” While the Village Square is often the center of attention in East Troy, Lenz said the big events help to draw visitors into the area and introduce them to businesses on and around the square and beyond. Getting the word about East Troy is one of the chamber and village’s main goals. “East Troy is well worth a visit. In addition to East Troy Village Square Park and our thriving downtown district, we are known for our one-of-a-kind attractions like the East Troy Electric Railroad –Wisconsin’s last original electric railroad line, Alpine Valley Music Theater, Skydive Milwaukee as well as unique recreational opportunities and vibrant events and festivals,” Lenz said.
A market on the Square
The Elkhorn Farm Market began thanks to a grant through the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The grant was only for a couple of years, but the market has been a success and is entering its 12th year.

It’ll be in Veteran’s Park in Elkhorn on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from June 9 through Sept. 29, according to volunteer market manager Christy Harteau. The cost per vendor is $15 per week or $100 for the season. “We’re a producers-only market, meaning they have to make it, bake it or grow it, like our motto says,” she said. “No commercial products are allowed, and people can’t sell things that aren’t their own.” The Elkhorn Farm Market is run by a committee of vendors. “That’s important because the decisions that have to be made always focus on what’s best for the market,” Harteau said. The committee limits some products in an effort to prevent multiple vendors from selling the same items, but there are exceptions. “Those that want to become a vendor can get on a waiting list, but generally we take all vegetable growers that want to be part of it,” Harteau said. “And it would be nice to have more fruit
available.” She said there’s been a misconception that the market is organic. While some vendors are certified organic, it’s not a requirement. Harteau said early on, the market tends to have more artisans, but produce increases once vendors have harvested their vegetables. “People not local don’t always understand that the produce is from this area, and that means it’s not always available, especially early on,” she said. During midseason, Harteau said the market averages 25 to 30 vendors on any given Saturday, and she estimates upward of a couple hundred people shop “on a good day, with cooperation from the weather.” Though vendors vary depending on a number of factors, she said items available may include produce, honey, jellies and jams, eggs, corn, cider, coffee beans, dog treats, baked goods, plants, metal work, woodwork, original art, needlework, tote bags, painted

In addition to serving as the manager, Harteau staffs an information booth at the market that promotes local events, steers people to local establishments for coffee, breakfast or lunch and has copies of the Farm Fresh Atlas – a listing of area farms – available. “The best thing we hear from vendors and visitors is that our market is friendly. My personal motto is to be kind, and that’s how the market is, too. It’s a friendly atmosphere and a great representation of the community and county,” Harteau said. Vendors, in addition to being producers, need to live within 15 miles of the market to meet the “locally grown” requirement, she said. As a bonus – and to make the market more fun for shoppers while also supporting the local community – drawings are held each Saturday. “Each week we give away a gift card for Friends on the Square, but we also add others in – coupons from Matheson Memorial Library, J. Roberts Menswear and tickets to Lakeland Players’ fall play, just to name a few,” Harteau said. The market is held rain or shine. RESTAURANT WEEK RUNS JUNE 2-10 Lake Geneva Restaurant Week returns in June for its fourth year with more food and fun, according to the folks at VISIT Lake Geneva. New this year is the Taste of Lake Geneva, which will be held on Saturday, June 2. The event will kick off this celebration of food. Taste of Lake Geneva runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flat Iron Park. For $2 admission, visitors get to sample their way through some of the areas best restaurants. Participants will be able to enjoy food demonstrations, live music, beer and wine at a lakeside setting. Food samples at the event range from $3 to $9

Tour of America’s Dairyland returns to East Troy June 22 The largest competitive cycling event in the United States, the Tour of America’s Dairyland, will make its seventh stop in East Troy on Friday, June 22. The East Troy Cycling Classic begins at 10:35 a.m. with nearly nine hours of highenergy professional cycling around the East Troy Village Square and nearby streets. “ToAD has differentiated itself by evolving into a community-wide festival that happens to have cycling throughout the day,” said Vanessa Lenz, Executive Director of the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the event. “East Troy is day 2 on the 11-day race series and our schedule represents everything our local community has to offer.” Spectators may watch the cyclists whiz by once every three minutes from anywhere on the racecourse, which will feature plenty of food, drink and entertainment. Admission is free. “This year’s event features live music, the East Troy Farmers Market, an ESPN radio broadcast and more. Many surrounding businesses will get in on the action with race day specials and bike themed items,” Lenz said.
“We’ve got two races for locals to get in on the action. East Troy’s 4th annual Slow Ride Bike Race will feature riders competing to be the slowest without stopping. Last place comes in first. The winner gets $100 and there will also be a prize for best costume,” she added. “The Tour de Square Kids Fun Races has been a favorite for the past six years. Entry is free but pre-registration is required.” East Troy is only one of three hosts on the ToAD 2018 series to host handcyclinga form of adaptive cycling that enables athletes of all abilities to ride a “bike” exclusively using the upper body.
The lowdown
The East Troy race start and finish will be on the east side of the square (2096 Church St.). About 500 cyclists from around the country and abroad will ride laps around the half-mile course between 10:35 a.m. and 8 p.m. for timed races that range from 40 to 90 minutes. The race will shut down streets on the course, but local businesses will remain open. Parking will be available in the

celebration a memorable and unforgettable experience. “The lakefront easily can be incorporated into wedding festivities,” said Jaci Jasionowski, a catering sales manager at Lake Lawn. “Tent wedding receptions or open lawn receptions are popular summer choices. Lake Lawn has a variety of options to bring the wedding outdoors.” But regardless, the resort’s wedding specialists stand with couples every step of the way. “When you first book your event, that wedding specialist will be the one with you through the entire process,” said Nicole Ross, another catering sales manager. “She will be the one to answer all of your questions and work with you to make your dreams come true.”
Take it outside
Ceremonies traditionally were held in the family’s church or at city hall. Today, more couples are opting to hold wedding services at the reception venue, bringing their clergyperson with them. If couples need someone to perform the ceremony, Lake Lawn can provide a non-denominational or universal service from their preferred vendors. “A popular choice for a summer wedding is to hold the ceremony at the lakefront,” said Terri Bain, director of sales at Lake Lawn. The lakefront ceremony sites can be used with the outdoor tent reception or with one of the inside spaces. The lakefront ceremony offers a beautifully impressive backdrop for that most important moment in one’s life. Promise Point is the largest site and recently was upgraded. Walk to the shore along a brick-paved walkway lined with blooming flowers. An elegant trellis is at the lakefront, which may be decorated to suit the style and even incorporate the wedding party’s colors and adds to the ambience. Up to 300 guest chairs
will be arranged along the lawn for all to comfortably view the ceremony. Enchanted Shores will accommodate up to 200 chairs. Ceremonies usually are held about 5 or 5:30 p.m. to take advantage of the setting sun’s glow across the water. Ceremony times vary depending on the time of year and the number of outdoor weddings scheduled on any particular day.
Plan B, if needed
One concern is the potential for inclement weather. Bain said the Great Room is used as a backup. It features a high, vaulted ceiling and beautiful stone fireplace. It accommodates up to 130 people. Lake Lawn also offers a variety of outdoor reception options. The Lakeview Terrace provides a space for a cocktail reception for up to 225 guests. This cocktail party can be held as part of an indoor reception or as a stand-alone service. The Courtyard Garden and Pergola, with its custom brick courtyard area and a red ember, burning gas fire pit provides just the right ambience for a cocktail party. This space is located near the Geneva Ballroom and can be combined with that space. It also is the intimate setting for small wedding ceremonies. The lakefront tent site is located near the resort’s main buildings. Tents up to 46 feet by 120 feet with sides to protect against inclement weather are available. The tent wedding will be held even if it is raining. The tents allow for formal seating and space for a dance floor.
Indoor options
The indoor ballrooms range from the smaller Geneva Club room, which will accommodate 130 people, to the Geneva Ballroom, which will accommodate up to 350 guests. Each space can be customized for a formal or whimsical

experience to fit into the spirit of the wedding. “Today’s grooms take a more active part in selecting the wedding venues and specialties,” Ross said. “They tend to be very protective of their bride and often take over some of the responsibilities that come with planning a wedding.” The choice is yours, large or small. A specialist will guide couples through sizes and prices so that their wedding will be as personal and beautiful as possible and still remain within their budget. A variety of food and drink packages, from formal dinners to buffets, are available. One advantage of holding a wedding at a resort is that it can be converted from a wedding day into a wedding weekend. The rehearsal dinner can be held in the Delavan Room. Individual choices may be ordered from a limited menu. And, of course, the food will be of the same high quality that is always present at Lake Lawn.
Amenities abound
The Calladora Spa can provide all of the hair, nails and makeup applications for the bridal party by appointment. Share a morning or afternoon of luxury at the spa with a specially arranged brunch of mimosas and breakfast sandwiches. At the farthest point on the property sits the Lake House, a complete home available for rental for the weekend. At some weddings, the Lake House becomes the place for the bride and her attendants to stay and prepare for the wedding. Others may rent it to use as a family gathering place. Champagne and flowers are perfect for an engagement party or for that matter any event.
Pier 292 is located on the second floor above the popular Pier 290 restaurant. The room has been completed in a somewhat nautical look, with lightly stained hardwood floors and hardwood ceiling and lightcolored, wood paneled walls and possesses a magnificent view of the lake. The glass doors leading to the balcony are floor to ceiling, which open to bring the outside in and make the balcony and room one open space. The large fireplace creates a warm ambience days or evenings. Enjoy the comfortable seating around the fireplace and large television above it. Its antique bar was given to Pier 292 by the Driehaus family and adds a look of elegance to the room. With its ornate medallion centered on the front, which extends into the room slightly, it is a reminder of the early glamour and elegance of Geneva Lake. This room will hold up to 100 guests for a reception of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. If a seated meal or a buffet dinner is preferred, 65 to 70 can be accommodated comfortably.

“The wedding ceremony may be held in the venue,” Mulcahy said. “Standing on
the balcony with the lake in the background while the guests are seated inside facing the lake presents a beautiful picture. Often the couple will plan to have a short cruise on the lake with champagne toasts to give the venue time to reset the space from ceremony venue to a beautiful dinner and reception area with an area open for dancing.” It is an appropriate site for a smaller wedding. After a recent ceremony in the venue, with 45 guests attending, they went
down to the pier for a tour on the lake and enjoyed champagne and wedding cake aboard one of the boats. The space can be arranged in a variety of ways to meet any needs. They often bring in a long table to accommodate corporate meetings. Often these groups head down to the Pier 290 restaurant for lunch or rent one of the canopy spaces for a more private lunch. Weddings also may choose the canopies for a cocktail party before returning upstairs

They can be opened to bring in the outdoor feel during nice weather, but the clear, heavy draperies allow views of the lake on cold or windy days. Three canopy spaces are available. One usually is used for outdoor seating for the restaurant and the other two host private parties. Each one accommodates 30 guests for a plated, seated meal or 25 for a buffet dinner and up to 40 for a mingling-style cocktail party. Guests may wander onto the deck to watch activities on the lake or gather around one of the fire pits for a relaxing view. The 26-mile walking path also

For the last several years, barns have been popular venues for wedding ceremonies and receptions. While one is not available on this property, the Wooden Boat Center offers a barnlike experience that may be even better than the actual thing. It is located behind Pier 290. It is an open-air, high-ceiling building that accommodates large numbers of guests. Up to 225 people can be seated for dinner, and there is plenty of room for dancing. The décor can be as country or as elegant as desired. The wedding can be held in the venue or elsewhere. t one time there were eight to 10 bars located throughout Powers Lake,” said Jim Boris, owner of the newly opened The Rock Bar. “Today we are the only one located on the Powers Lake lakefront.” Boris said every other bar has been sold and replaced by large, high-end homes. Boris and his wife, Christine, took over a building with a long history of serving food and drinks to area residents and visitors.
It was first known as Harbor Lites and then Uncle Ed’s BBQ. The building intentionally was burned to the ground in the 1980s, Boris said. After being rebuilt and reopened, Uncle Ed leased the property to Primo’s Italian Restaurant. It became home to the Eddie Cash Show until it folded and remained vacant for three or four years. Now it has new life. “At the time we took over the building, it was in need of renovation,” Christine Boris said. “We knew what we liked in a fun bar and so began the renovation with those

The Rock Bar opened for business on Feb. 15. They began with a fully stocked bar and some foods prepared in-house. “We began with a soft opening,” Jim said. A soft opening that they have continued the past few months. They added foods slowly, and the menu continues to evolve. And some offerings already have made their mark. A favorite from the small bites menu is the chicken wings. “They are sweet and tangy because they are topped with a secret mixture of spices,” shared Christine, who said they have become the most popular item ordered by groups enjoying a drink with friends. After all, doesn’t everyone love wings? They feature a variety of appetizers, some of them quite different from usual bar fare. The bacon-wrapped water chestnuts tossed in hoisin sauce certainly is one of the items that visitors must taste. The overall menu, while not extensive, offers variety and focuses on fine-quality foods. No bar menu is complete without hamburgers, which begin with a quarterpound patty. But if that isn’t enough to please your palate, try the double or triple burger. Consider adding bacon or grilled
