ICE CASTLES SLATED TO OPEN 2022 RUN IN JANUARY
Winter Wonderland Ice Castles, the frozen winter wonderland what has attracted thousands to the Lake Geneva area in winters past, is set for another run in 2022. The frozen attraction is slated to open in January and will again be located at Geneva National Resort, 1091 Hidden Cottage Cir., Lake Geneva. This is the fourth year for the attraction in Wisconsin. Opening is dependent on weather conditions with long stretches of freezing temperatures needed to accommodate construction of the attraction. The photo-worthy Ice Castles will last into late February or early March, weather permitting. Dates and hours will be available online at icecastles.com. The award-winning winter attraction is built on site using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists, according to the company that sponsors the attraction in four cities across North America. The frozen structure includes breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains and more. Ice Castles also plans to offer sleigh rides as part of the Wisconsin attraction. Ice Castles will again observe some COVID-19 protocols to promote health and safety, according to the company. Employees will wear masks and masks are recommended for guests when interacting in common areas. The attraction is also designed to make use of social distancing. Tickets (ages 12 and older) are currently listed at $21 Monday through Thursday and $27 Friday through Sunday. Tickets for children (4-11) are $16 weekdays and $22 weekends. Tickets may be available on-site if Ice Castles is not sold out. On-site prices are subject to higher rates. For guaranteed entry and the lowest price, buy tickets online in advance. Alpine features 20 slopes that range from beginner to expert mogul runs with 388 feet of vertical skiing. The longest run is 3,000 feet. The Rivalry Alehouse is the newest restaurant in downtown Antioch. owners. The Ford logo can still be seen on the brick wall inside the Alehouse from its days as a car dealership. Additionally, the wall now bears the flags of Germany and Ireland – the Rivalry. “It took us four years to remodel the building. We added the second floor for banquets and other gatherings and as an overflow space, when we are busy on the ground floor,” said Jerry Johnson, who along with partner Jim Donohoe, owns The Rivalry Alehouse. “Upstairs we are creating an open rooftop for guests to enjoy both their drinks and the outside view.” A problem occurred after their opening when an automobile coming from Lake Street failed to turn onto Main Street and proceeded straight ahead and through the wall of the Rivalry. Fortunately, it did not cause damage to the main dining room or bar and no one was injured in the restaurant. The restaurant remained open while work to repair the damage continued.
An industrial look
The main dining room features an industrial look with high ceilings, and exposed beams and visible pipes along the ceiling. It is a very calming space with neutral walls, and metal chairs with clean lines.
The tables are well spaced giving everyone plenty of room. The floor is also light wood giving a clean, relaxing and open look. The bar is centered along the back wall with its 16 beer taps and stools for those who wish to sit at the bar. “The Rivalry Alehouse offers a variety of foods both Irish and German, with a touch of American traditional pub foods and the occasional Italian fare. Many items are made with a unique touch by our executive chef,” Johnson said. An appetizer that combines a Chinese eggroll and Irish corned beef, created by Executive Chef Jorge Esparza has quickly become a favorite. Throughout the menu one can find “rival” foods items in the same category that make the guest choose between an Irish or German presentation. The menu allows food choices from either country’s cuisine in each category – appetizers, sandwiches, and dinner entrees. The Berlin poutine is a combination of Rivalry fries topped with short ribs, and house-made beer gravy, Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds, pickled red onions and braised red cabbage.

The food rivalry is not only between German and Irish choices but as one peruses the menu, there is another well-known rivalries represented there. If you choose between the Wrigley flatbread or the Comiskey Chicken, your Chicago baseball loyalty is known. The full dinner menu offers a variety of foods, including some American foods among the German and Irish choices. The menu also has a few gluten-free or vegetarian options. These include an Impossible Burger served without a bun. The Impossible burger is a meatless burger. A grilled vegetable option is also available. For many visitors, it is the beer on tap that draws them in. For the beer lovers there are 16 different draft beers. Four of the taps are reserved for the Rivalry Alehouse special brews. These have been created specifically for the Rivalry Alehouse by Lakefront Brewery of Milwaukee. The four are always on tap and include a lager, red ale, dark lager, and an IPA. One of these may become your favorite but if not, there are 12 other on tap beers to choose from, along with a variety of bottled and canned beer. If beer is not your drink of choice, try one of their wine selections, or cocktails. They offer a special cocktail that changes monthly. This is not the first bar and restaurant owned by Johnson and Donohoe. The partners also own The Lodge of Antioch, which has been a local favorite for many years and is also located on Main Street. According to Johnson, there is a difference in the two places. While both are in buildings more than 100 years old, the Lodge has a log cabin motif with a Wisconsin Northwoods vibe. The menu features more pub fare while the Rivalry has a more modern look and some more upscale food items. While food styles may be different the quality remains the same. “The Lodge is the place local residents come for a beer and a sandwich. It is a place where local people enjoy a friendly get together. We see the Rivalry attracting out of town visitors along with local residents. It is more upscale,” Johnson said. “We look forward to serving both residents and visitors at both locations. “Both restaurants serve good quality foods made to order on site. The Lodge serves breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and serves lunch every day. The Rivalry currently only serves lunch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” said Johnson. “We plan to open the Rivalry for brunch on weekends in the near future.” While the two restaurants are different, they do complement each other according to Johnson. Need knows no season Agency seeks support to continue beyond the holidays by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
As 2022 begins we hope to leave the pandemic behind and face a year filled with health, and happiness. Unfortunately, need still exists for many families who are living on the brink of poverty or who continue to be in need of basic necessities. During the holidays, many embrace the needs of others and giving is part of the spirit of the season. But needs remain after the holidays have ended. Helping those in need cannot end once the Christmas tree is taken down and the ornaments and sparkling lights are packed away. “People are in need all year long. Poverty doesn’t go away because a new year begins,” said Sharon Pomaville, Executive Director, of the Sharing Center, Inc. “People still need food, housing, medical care, and jobs.” The Sharing Center, at 25700 Wilmot Rd., Trevor, is available to help provide these basic needs and empower people in their transition to independence in an environment of respect and dignity. According to Pomaville, the center assists 3,500 residents of Western Kenosha County in a variety of ways, ranging from providing food, housing, and medical care, to learning new job skills as they springboard them to a new life of financial independence. Food is a basic need and must be provided for those who lack the nutritious foods needed to stay healthy, according to Pomaville. “Kenosha County has been able to keep up with the needs of the community to provide enough food,” she said. “For over two years under the direction of the past two United States Presidents, more federal aid for food has been available. In addition, donations and other local programs aid in keeping our food bank filled. We are fortunate that we don’t need to purchase food as it is provided by federal and state programs and by the donations received.”

More than just food In addition to food for the family, the center also provides pet food, cleaning supplies and hygiene items that are not always available at food banks, thanks to the donors who support the work of the Sharing Center. The food area is arranged as a grocery store with aisles of canned goods, coolers with milk and other refrigerated items where visitors may select items just as they would in a grocery store. There are limits on how much of an item each family may procure on each visit to be certain there is enough for all in need. Young children have special needs including the unending need for diapers. To protect the safety of infants and children, car seats appropriate for the child’s age are needed and must be replaced as the child grows. For school age children it is often difficult for the family to provide needed school supplies. The Sharing Center is available to lend a hand in finding these items. Clothing is also an essential needed, especially for children who seem to outgrow their clothes faster than parents can provide new items. This is especially important in winter when warm coats, shoes, and boots are needed to keep them safe and warm in the Wisconsin winter. Although most parents think more about their children’s needs than their own, clothing is also needed for adults. A visit to the Sharing Center is always a pleasant experience for those coming into the store looking for help. They are greeted with a pleasant smile and a helpful attitude by the volunteers. The center is a well-organized building with a variety of items reminiscent of a department store. Racks of clothing, a toy department, and even a small library along with the huge grocery area makes this a onestop shop for those who qualify. Volunteers offer help guiding clients through the process and connect them with other programs that provide the aid that is needed. The goal, according to Pomaville, is to help the visitors with respect.
Homelessness on the rise There has been an increase in homelessness or near homelessness since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have lost their jobs due to reduction in staff or closure of businesses. Others have been reduced to part-time work. “Homelessness may not be the only problem a family must deal with so we have staff work with them to stabilize their needs and connect them with the right agencies to return them to a stable life,” shared Pomaville. Whether it is financial needs, medical needs, mental health needs, or homelessness, the Sharing Center will work to provide the means for families to get back on their feet. Because of the increased needs in recent months, they are using more staff time working with visitors to be certain that each family is connected to the appropriate resources. According to Pomaville, the Sharing Center is heavily networked with the providers that the homeless might need as they work to keep a roof over resident’s lives. “A state agency oversees the homeless housing program to provide rapid rehousing for those who are without shelter,” Pomaville said. “They provide shelters for those in immediate need. For others vouchers are given to help with rent or to pay for immediate housing, and to help with utilities

if needed.” Often it is not just a need for a place to live but there is also a need for furniture and other household items to make a house or apartment a home. Sheets, blankets, towels, dishes, appliances and furniture may be needed. “We keep a list of the items that some of the families need.” Pomaville said. “While we don’t keep appliances and furniture here, when someone has some to donate, we will match them up with a person who has a need for that item. They have to arrange transportation for the item.”
Health care concerns There is an ongoing need for medical care. The working poor may not be able to pay for health insurance but may earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. Often a medical facility that accepts their insurance may not be within a distance that the family can reach. Programs are available at the Sharing Center to give information and sometimes treatment from providers. Kenosha

Community Health Center and the Silver Lake Clinic offer medical help either at their facilities or in special clinics held at the Sharing Center after hours. They work with Medicare and Medicaid and offer sliding scale fees based on income to help those who are in need of care. Dental work is also needed by both the adults and children of client families. It is often one of the first thing put off when money is tight. Small dental problems can fester into major problems involving loss of teeth and infections. The Sharing Center aims to avoid such problems. Eyeglasses are also important and expensive. Finding a reasonable way for families to procure glasses is part of the medical needs. How often do we hear about children who are found to have difficulty in school only because they cannot see? The Sharing Center works with the whole family to connect them with programs to meet their needs.

By working to connect families to needed resources the volunteers attempt to reduce some of the stress that leads to abuse. The meeting rooms at the Sharing Center provide space for many of the providers to reach the clients in need. Agencies such as the Aging and Disability Resource Center, Women, Infants and Children food programs, the Veteran’s Administration and mental health programs often have representatives available at the center. They may also use the facility when it is closed to provide one-on-one or group meetings for participants in the program. In addition to donations, volunteers are always needed, according to Pomaville. She reminds people to keep the needs of others in mind throughout the year and continue to support programs that improve life for those in need. Local artist uses her talent to reach out in crises

Artist Jennifer Miller, of Riverview Studio, grew up on a quiet lake in Kansasville and found immediate inspiration from the beautiful and picturesque landscapes. The inspiration, she said, allowed her to become a commissioned artist by the time she turned 18 and she eventually turned into a full-time career. “I just love art and I did it commercially for awhile and then went out on my own did my fine art,” said Miller, whose background includes acrylics, watercolors and oils. Miller, now of Burlington, decided to open Riverview Studio in 2003 housed inside a barn on a family farm alongside Honey Creek she shares with husband, Mark, and two sons Wyatt and Eli. She expresses her artistry through landscapes in her own backyard, literally, as well as Burlington-area landmarks such as Echo Lake and the old water tower. “I really enjoy playing with light and contrast of sunlight, moonlights. Landscapes are my passion,” she said. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
“Everything I paint here is what I see and feel. Most of my paintings are Wisconsin landscapes.” Miller, also a photographer, oftentimes uses her scenic photos as inspiration for creating artwork. “I do a lot of photography, so my painting are from my own photography, or my own inspiration,” said Miller. “I love seeing the sun rise and the sun set, you will see that in a lot of my paintings.” Miller, meanwhile, decided to share her artistic passion with others and launched a second business called Get Artzy. At Get Artzy, which is on the same property, Miller offers art classes in the colorful, countryside retreat to young and old alike. Children as young as six years old are welcomed in to learn the fundamentals of artwork, according to the Get Artzy website. Miller additionally holds adult classes for people 14 and older. The Get Artzy classes mainly focus on acrylics, with all materials given to students enrolled. “I offer different themes from

landscapes, flowers, birds, wine and more,” Miller wrote on the Get Artzy website. “We all paint the same painting. I do want everyone to Get Artzy and make their painting their own, and be creative.” Miller teaches blending, mixing and different strokes with the brushes in a relaxing environment. “I teach art to kids and families from basic art to advanced,” Miller said.
Art therapy
While Miller spends most her time crafting works inside her studio, she also responds to community needs, including recently in the cities of Kenosha and Waukesha. In 2020, amid unrest in Kenosha in response to an officer-involved shooting, many businesses were damaged by protestors. Miller, like other artists, helped Kenosha heal through painting murals for affected businesses.
“Kenosha, when they were having the turmoil there, I packed up my van and went out and painted a mural on one of business. I just couldn’t help it,” she said. “It is not necessarily for myself, I care about everybody and art helps everybody. It just does.” Most recently, she helped the City of Burlington design a logo expressing the city’s support for Waukesha, which
experienced a tragic Christmas parade attack that claimed six lives and injured dozens of others. “I came up with that logo just to help represent our love for the community, unity and helping one another out,” Miller said. “Doing art is really therapeutic, especially now,” she added. The Riverview Studio, 34610 Spring Prairie Road, Burlington, is open by appointment only to visitors interested in purchasing or viewing Miller’s artwork. More information is accessible at riverviewstudio.com. “My gallery is open weekly and people can set up an appointment and view my art year-round,” she said. Miller, meanwhile, sells reprints of her original artwork as requested by customers. Miller can also complete a custom painting for a person, or business, and prices will vary based on the scope of the individual project.
