T
he Lake Geneva area becomes a winter wonderland filled with exciting indoor and outdoor activities during Winterfest, which runs from Jan. 26 through Feb. 3. The yearly festival gets people out of their January slumber and returns some of the excitement that they experienced during the holidays. Favorite activities return along the shore of Geneva Lake and throughout the community that appeal to visitors of all ages. Two lakefront activities make their debut at Winterfest.

Located on Riviera Beach will be the Ice Castle, a frozen phenomenon said to bring fairy tales to life. The castle is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand placed by professional ice artists. The icicles are replaced daily as needed. Myriad paths travel through the sculpture, which includes icecarved tunnels, slides and beautiful fountains. Also inside are LED lights embedded in breathtaking sculptures and the ice castle’s walls, which add a gorgeous glow. Traveling through the ice castles is reminiscent of taking a trip through the movie “Frozen.” Those who have been on Wrigley Drive in the past month cannot have missed

this beautiful addition to the lakefront. Tickets are best purchased in advance online at www.icecastles.com. Hovercrafts will make their first appearance on the lakefront during Winterfest on Jan. 26. “Hovercrafts are vessels that float on air and are powered by air,� said Joe Tominaro, director of marketing and development for Visit Lake Geneva. Hovercraft rides will be available to the public from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased on-site: $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and younger. From 2 to 4 p.m., watch the hovercrafts skimming over the lake as they compete in the Hovercraft Challenge, making their way through a challenging obstacle course. At 3:30, a world speed record will be attempted to break the current official time in the Guinness Book of

World Records. The event will end with a lighted regatta on Geneva Lake.
Snow sculpting returns
For many visitors, Winterfest’s main event is the annual National Snow Sculpting Championship in which teams of expert snow sculptors turn large mounds of snow into intricate sculptures. The competition is held in front of the Riviera and continues into Flat Iron Park. Teams have qualified by winning state titles. The competition will begin on Jan. 30. Over the next few days, onlookers may see some of the artists, working through the night by flashlight if needed, as the mounds of snow are transformed. On Feb. 2 from 11a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors may vote for their favorite sculpture for the People’s Choice Award. Pick up ballots at the Riviera Ballroom starting at 10 a.m. and return them by 1 p.m. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m. In Flat Iron Park, there also will be an area of snow sculptures created by local children.
Other events
On Jan. 27 a variety of events will be held throughout the area. Do you think one needs to be in Alaska to view or participate in dog sled races? Not so. Winterfest has its own version. Travel to the Grand Geneva Mountain Top Chalet to view this human dog sled race. Six people will take on all of the roles of a typical dog sled. Four will become sled pullers, replacing those beautiful Alaskan huskies. One will be a sled rider and the other the sled pusher. All sleds and harnesses are provided by Grand Geneva. Teams must register ahead of time. Contact the chalet for more information and to register. Hawk’s View Golf Club on Krueger Road will be the home of the fourth annual chili cook-off, which involves more than just chili. It will be held

This year a new activity will be enjoyed on Geneva Lake during Winterfest – hovercrafts. Visitors will have a chance to catch a ride or sit back and watch them speed around an obstacle course and attempt to break the world record for speed.

The traditional Winterfest Souper Family Night at Harbor Shore will once again offer a tasty treat for participants and will benefit the local food pantry. Restaurants will offer a variety of excellent soups from 5 to 8 p.m. Each person must donate at least two nonperishable items or pay a $4 cash donation. Each participant will be given a taste of five soups. Other activities will include music, balloon animals, jokes and an interactive game show. On Jan. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Riviera Ballroom will offer music, comedy and magic. Music by Unhitch’d will fill the air, and a magic and illusion show by popular local magician Tristan Crist will keep everyone mesmerized as the audience wonders “how does he do it?” Snacks and drinks will be available. The first drink is included in the ticket price of $10. The Cocoa Crawl is planned on Feb. 1. The free event takes visitors through downtown Lake Geneva in search of hot cocoa and other chocolate treats. It begins at the Geneva Theater, where participants will check in and receive a map and list of the participating businesses. Visit them for your hot cocoa. Return to the theater to vote on your favorite. The theater also will be hosting a meet and greet with Elsa and Ana from the popular movie “Frozen” for those who participate in the Cocoa Crawl. A free showing of the movie follows. For those interested, helicopter rides will be given from the shore of Geneva Lake on Feb. 2 and 3. LOCAL SCULPTOR HELPED STATE CLAIM NATIONAL TITLE IN 2018
For someone who was participating in just his second official competition, Mike Austin wasn’t necessarily expecting that he and his teammates would emerge as winners of the U.S. National Snow Sculpting competition in early 2018. But that’s just what happened for Austin, of Burlington, and fellow snow sculptors Joshua Jakubowski, Grafton, and Bob Lechtenberg, Hartland, who made up the Wisconsin 1 team at the competition held during Lake Geneva’s 2018 Winterfest. “I knew I would get to Lake Geneva to compete, but I didn’t think it would happen this quick,” Austin said. “It’s a big honor and really humbling.” The trio’s creation, dubbed “Your Move,” was not only judged best by a panel of fellow competitors, but it also took home the People’s Choice Award, which garners thousands of votes from visitors to Winterfest. The team prevailed in a contest that included 14 other teams featuring the best snow sculptors from Alaska to Maine, according to Austin.

The winning sculpture featured a large octopus engaged in a game of chess with a crab. The creation included several chess pieces, some coral, a sea anemone and a seahorse all done in a fine detail that defies the medium. “It starts out as an idea and the idea gets put on paper before it becomes a sculpture,” Austin said. “We’re very proud of the piece. It turned out better that we imagined in

a lot of respects.” The teams started at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday and had to be finished by 11 a.m. Saturday. Some of the teams worked through the night in frigid temperatures to finish their sculptures. That was the case with Jakubowski and Lechtenberg, who worked through the final night. Austin said he left to get some sleep about 3 a.m. Saturday but returned around 6 a.m. to help the trio finish. “I wouldn’t be there without my teammates.” “It was ideal conditions – a little cold,” he added. “(Which is) good for the snow, but bad for the artists.”

Austin, who has organized
the chocolate carving contest for Burlington’s ChocolateFest in recent years, has dabbled in ice and snow sculpting for the past five years or so. In 2015 and 2016 he did snow sculptures for Grand Geneva Resort during Lake Geneva’s annual Winterfest – a moose on skis the first year and ice skaters the next. Then in 2017 he, Jakubowski and Lechtenberg joined forces to compete in the state contest in Fond du Lac and came away as winners. With the victory came a bid to enter the national competition in Lake Geneva. “I’ve been immersing myself in the medium the last five years,” Austin said. “I felt I was ready to compete at the state level.”

or some people, curling is more than just a sport, it is a way for them to socialize. The social sport, according to the United States Curling Association, is an activity where players slide 42-pound granite stones down a sheet of ice toward a target, known as the “house.” Using a broom, players sweep the ice to increase the distance or direct the stone’s path toward the target. Players, or teams, score more points against a competitor by positioning their stone closer to the target. David Bemus, of Twin Lakes, has been involved in curling for more than 20 years and said scoring is similar to bocce ball. Bemus, whose wife, Gail Armstrong, also plays, said the two were introduced to the sport many years ago. “Gail has been playing this since junior high; she started with her family in Highland Park,” Bemus said. “I have been maybe in this sport for about 27 years. I started in 1992 at the Chicago Curling Club in Northbrook.” The two, meanwhile, hone their skills as members of the Racine Curling Club. Armstrong said curling, which is a sanctioned Olympic sport, is more common in Wisconsin than people believe. “As a matter of fact, it is not that rare; there are 34 curling clubs in the state of Wisconsin,” she said. “There are 34 curling clubs in the country known as the Soviet Union, and they are in the Olympics.”

The Racine Curling Club, one of only three in Southeast Wisconsin, has drawn members from communities west of Interstate 94, notably Racine and Kenosha counties. Additionally, one member travels to the club from Lake County, Ill., Armstrong said. “We have lots of members that are from west of Interstate 94. My team is from Twin Lakes. There are several people from the Burlington area,” she said. “People come pretty darn far.”

At the Racine Curling Club, where there are more than 100 members, Armstrong said the social environment and quality ice surface brings people in. She compares the lure to golf courses, noting golfers seek an ideal playing surface, which the Racine Curling Club has. “Curling is a very social sport and the reason that many people belong to the Racine Curling Club is that we have quality ice. It is like golf courses; you want to have a good surface.” Bemus agreed, adding the club caters to people of all ages regardless of athletic ability. Bemus said one member is 87 years old. “It is a sport for all ages. Once you get the fundamentals down, you can curl anywhere and with anybody,” he said. “That is the beauty of this. It is a wonderful sport.”

interested in taking on the sport. These events, which typically happen on Sundays, consist of watching a video and receiving instruction from someone such as Chris Rank. Rank, of Round Lake, Ill., is one of many instructors teaching newcomers the craft. According to Bemus, instruction takes anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. “What that is, is a brief two-hour introduction to curling,” he said, adding prospective members watch a video before they take the ice. “The video tells you all of the techniques in curling,” he said. Unlike the Olympics, where professionals make the sport appear easy, Bemus said curling could present a challenge for some people. However, anyone can tackle the challenge, he said. “The funniest thing people say is that the people on television make it look simple,” he said. “But then they get out there and use muscles they have never used before. “There is good cardiovascular exercise with the sweeping,” he said. “You can get your physical exercise here, and you can meet some new people, so it is camaraderie,” he said.
OLYMPIC GAINS
Since last year’s Winter Olympics, when Madison’s Matt Hamilton garnered a gold medal for the United States, people have become more aware of the sport. The awareness, said Armstrong, has led to an influx of new members. “We have more than 100 members,” she said. “We gained about 25 new people as a result of last year’s Olympics.”

feet, with gloves and specialized pants optional. Bemus and Armstrong each recommend arriving to any curling club with a clean pair of tennis shoes and loose-fitting clothes. For people looking to buy their own equipment, prices vary based on what each person seeks, but brooms typically cost anywhere from $70 to $135. “You can buy as little, or as much, as you want,” he said. Because the Racine Curling Club operates on volunteers, membership dues are reasonable, Armstrong said. “It is an all-volunteer club; nobody is paid to do anything at this club,” she said, adding members are responsible for maintenance, cleanup and other tasks. “Because we do it that way, our dues are very reasonable.” The annual membership fee for adults is $125, while juniors pay $36. League play, meanwhile, costs an extra $103 for adults. Prices are reduced for first- and second-year members.

Because there are less than a handful of curling clubs in Southeast Wisconsin, Bemus and Armstrong found Racine’s facility as most convenient because of the drive. “It comes down to location. There are not that many curling clubs; they are like bowling alleys,” she said. “From where I live in Twin Lakes, I can triangulate three different curling clubs. A Hero for Wisconsin
Area man receives state USO award by Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
Burlington man is among six soldiers statewide awarded a United Service Organization Heroes of Wisconsin award for 2018. Capt. Jeffrey Koehler, 36, of the Army National Guard, was issued the award at the USO Wisconsin gala on Oct. 20 at the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. However, with Koehler away on his second deployment in the Middle East, his wife, Jamie Koehler, accepted the award on his behalf. The USO’s Heroes of Wisconsin gala is a blacktie fundraiser to recognize military members and veteran-friendly workplaces statewide. USO Wisconsin focuses on active military personnel in Wisconsin and helps families stay connected, said USO Wisconsin Executive Director Josh Sova. Each year, the organization issues one hero award to a

member of each branch of the services and one to the family of a fallen soldier, Sova said. “These are the best of our military in Wisconsin,” he said. The award focuses on a nominee’s military and community service, Sova said. Koehler, who is currently deployed, has shown his dedication by accepting assignments with the National Guard and answering calls for other emergencies in Wisconsin, such as flooding, that require National Guard involvement, he said. In addition, Koehler works as an electrical engineer at Henneman Engineering Inc. in Waukesha. Jamie Koehler nominated her husband for the award while attending a Brewers game over Memorial Day, when USO Wisconsin provided complimentary tickets to family members. Jamie Koehler said she believes the characteristics that earned her husband the award are his honesty, openness and compassion with his soldiers and his family. She said he treats people respectfully and is shown respect in return. Jon Ludtke, Jeff Koehler’s best friend for more than 30 years, said Jeff is loyal, reliable, patient, forgiving and funny. He said Koehler is there whenever he is needed, gives help with no questions asked and always keeps his cool. Jeff’s mom, Norine Koehler, created a nomination video for the USO.

“Jeff has never let adversity stand in his way,” Norine Koehler said in the video. Despite losing his father at the age of 13, Jeff Koehler went on to be a leader in high school sports and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was president of his fraternity and mentored people who struggled with math. He obtained his electrical engineering degree
from UW-Madison and his master’s degree at the Milwaukee School of Engineering before joining the National Guard, where he earned the rank of lieutenant and later captain. He was first deployed to Afghanistan four years ago, where he met Travis Legris, who said Koehler considers the well-being of his soldiers above himself in difficult situations. “Jeff is an excellent leader that remains calm under pressure,” he said. Jamie Koehler said Jeff’s first deployment lasted about nine months. This time, she said, he has been gone since March and is expected to come home around January. Jeff Koehler thanked the USO for the award via video from the Middle East. “I don’t feel like a hero,” he said. “I’m just serving my country, doing my duty.” Koehler thanked his wife for her support and the additional work she does while he is away, including caring for their sons Issac, 11, and Zak, 9. “I try to keep them on their normal routine,” Jamie Koehler said. “They know why he’s gone. They know he’s over there for our country.” Jamie Koehler said during this deployment she, Isaac and Zak are able to Skype with Jeff about twice a week. Jeff Koehler is a Milwaukee native who attended Waterford schools and now lives in Burlington.

UW-Whitewater offers free online class that’s all about the beverage University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Continuing Education is again offering its popular open online course “Beer Matters” in January. The free online class is open to anyone 21 and older. The class begins Jan. 14 and will explore beer and brewing from prehistoric times to the present. Lessons will cover brewing around the globe as well as beer in America, from Prohibition to the current popularity of craft brewing. Karl Brown, assistant professor of history at UW-Whitewater and former professional brewmaster in the U.S. and Europe, will teach the six-week course. New this year, participants will have a chance to join the instructor, an archaeologist and a local brewing history buff on a virtual expedition in the beer caves of one of Janesville’s historic breweries. Beer Matters is free, but registration is required. Beer pairings are suggested each week and class lessons will be complemented by optional meet-ups, where classmates have an opportunity to meet each other and the instructor at local beer or brewing venues. The course will wrap up in February, coinciding with a Brew Expo to be held at the UW-Whitewater Rock County campus in Janesville on Feb. 23. Wintertime means having all the windows in the house closed. It is a time when air quality decreases inside your home. Having healthy air to breathe is important and it starts with having a wellmaintained furnace. A yearly cleaning and overall checkup for the furnace will find problems before they become serious. Jameson Myers of Komfort Heating suggests having an indoor air analysis. “We offer a Quality Indoor Air Analysis to test for chemicals, allergens (and) pollutants,” he said. “We will offer solutions to help you clear your air and make it healthier.” Keeping the humidity at a comfortable level for those who live in the home is important. A level of 40 to 50 percent is considered ideal, according to Myers, while some families are comfortable as low as 30 percent or as high as 60 percent. Quality home air is enhanced with the use of air cleaners. Special air filters – including media cleaners or those that use UV lights to kill bacteria – are among the best ways to clean the air. The thin filters used in past days do not clean the air as well as modern day filter systems are able to. While they do not offer the service, Myers said that duct cleaning is also beneficial for maintaining healthy indoor air.

Gail Jachimek to help patients takeoff weight and keep it off. “We developed the program when Dr. Gail was having a difficult time taking off some extra weight in spite of dieting and heavy exercise,” Richard Jachimek said. The program is designed to take off weight and help avoid some of the medical problems that are often linked to excess weight. These include elevated blood pressure, diabetes, auto immune and thyroid problems, arthritis, and heart disease. The program, according to Jachimek, is to help clients be healthier and to look better. The weight loss program combines pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections and pills. This is combined with a diet program consisting of meats, fruits, and vegetables, and medical doctor and nursing support along with counseling to help patients reach their target goals. According to Jachimek, under the supervision of their medical doctors and practitioners, patients may drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first month. “It is not unusual for patients to drop 5 to 10 pounds in the first week,” he said. “We have had patients that have lost 17 pounds in their first week as well as patients that have lost over 100 pounds while on our program.” Patients are monitored on a weekly basis by nurses to evaluate their progress. Another source of quality locally raised and butchered meats is Wilson Farm Meats in Elkhorn. The Wilson family has been raising hogs at Wilson Prairie View Farm in Walworth County since the 1940s. It was in the early 2000’s that Scott Wilson purchased a local retail and processing plant to serve local clientele. The pork sold at Wilson Farm Meats is from animals raised on the family farm. They are then processed at the Elkhorn plant and sold in the store located there. The animals are known for providing a product that is lower in fat. While pork is their specialty, Wilson Farm Meats also carries a variety of other locally raised meats, including lamb, beef, or chicken, which can be custom processed to individual needs. Seasonal favorites such as turkey, fresh or smoked, goose, pheasant and bison are often available. Call to check on availability. Wisconsin cheeses are also sold. with Julie Tominaro, personal chef and owner of Crafty Kitchen to create a special dinner that combines choice food and wine for all to enjoy. “The dinner will be a four-course event with a wine pairing for each course,” Tumas said. “Chef Julie Tominaro … chooses the food then I pair each course with the proper wine to enhance the flavors of the food.” The dinner is held at the Bottle Shop in a cozy room that will easily hold the 30 guests. “We limit the number of guests to 30 to maintain that close and intimate feeling – leaving room for guests to gather and enjoy each other’s company,” Tumas said. The room has a soft, country look with wooden tables to accommodate parties of two, four, or six. Larger groups can also be accommodated if need be. On the walls are paintings by a local artist. “Each month a different artist from the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation displays their work on the walls,” Tumas said. “The paintings are for sale with the entire cost

Dinner to savor Tumas and Tominaro have put together a fabulous dinner. Tominaro, with her years of experience as a cook and chef, is known for providing healthy meals that are appealing. Tumas, with her wide knowledge of wines, and the large number of varieties on hand in the Bottle Shop does a wonderful job pairing the wines with the menu items to bring out the best in the food and in the wine. Holding the dinner at The Bottle Shop requires some extra work and planning for Tominaro, as there are no kitchen facilities on site. “Everything must be brought in completely prepared and ready to serve, Tumas said. “Julie uses warmers to keep the food hot while it is transported from her kitchen to the Bottle Shop for serving. While it had been a wine shop at the same location for about nine years, Beth remodeled it and turned it into a special place to enjoy wine and even some beer. While not affiliated with any one winery, the Bottle Shop carries over 800 bottles of the best wines from a variety of wineries. The origins of popular winter sports Many people spend winter huddled indoors. For winter sports enthusiasts, however, the arrival of snow and chilly temperatures means the start of a season of outdoor fun. Those who see winter as a time to embrace their love of sport may appreciate learning more about some of the sports that are most popular during the colder months of the year.
Ice hockey
Hockey is one of the most popular winter sports. In 1994, Parliament passed the Canada’s National Sport Act, which declared hockey the official national winter sport of Canada. The origins of ice hockey are somewhat uncertain, though some historians claim the first set of rules to govern the sport were written by students at Montreal’s McGill University in the 1870s.
Downhill skiing
SnowSports Industries America indicates that, in the 2014-2015 season, more than nine million American Alpine skiers took to the slopes, and the sport continues to attract new devotees each year. Historians state that skiing evolved as a method to cross the landscape in the winter when marshlands froze over. Cave drawings suggest that man used skis during the last Ice Age in the Palaeolithic period. Yet the birth of modern downhill skiing is often traced to the 1850s when Norwegian
legend Sondre Norheim popularized skis with curved sides and made skiing a sport instead of just a mode of transport. Skiing ultimately became quite popular in Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Today there are various types of downhill skiing, including mountain skiing, extreme cat skiing and heli skiing.
Curling
Curling may now be seen as a largely Canadian sport, but it is widely believed to be one of the world’s oldest team sports, tracing its origins to Great Britain. The World Curling Federation states paintings by the 16th Century Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel portrayed an activity similar to curling being played on Scotland’s frozen ponds. The earliest known curling stones came from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth, dating all the way back to 1511.
Ice skating
Speed skating and figure skating are derivatives of early ice skating, which is believed to have started in Finland more than 3,000 years ago. Skates were sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of a shoe and glided on top of the ice. The Dutch added edges to steel blades around the 13th or 14th centuries.
