s the weather turns colder and days get shorter, experts at the National Institute of Health said people often hibernate in the winter. Hibernation, according to the report, leads to the “winter blues” or even medically diagnosed seasonal affective disorder. “Winter blues is a general term, not a medical diagnosis. It’s fairly common, and it’s more mild than serious. It usually clears up on its own in a fairly short amount of time,” said Dr. Matthew Rudorfer, who is a NIH mental health expert. Winter blues, he said, are often linked to something specific, like the holidays or missing a person close to them. For people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which is more severe, common traits include isolating from others and even overeating. Mental health experts, the 2013 report noted, have offered a few suggestions to minimize symptoms related to either the “winter blues” or seasonal affective disorder.

Along with professional kite fliers and snow sculpting, the free event features a blizzard run snow slide on the shores of Delavan Lake and a plethora of other activities. “There will be family snow carving

Inside Lake Lawn’s Great Room, Connor Doran of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” will entertain visitors starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Once the temperatures plummet for good, ice rinks in area communities will open, including the Library Park Rink in Lake Geneva, Rotary Ice Rink in Walworth and the Veteran’s Memorial Park Rink in Delavan. Chicago beer story to feature tasting In support of Lake Geneva’s Winterfest, Black Point Estate and Horticultural Hall continue their winter lecture series with “Seipp: A Chicago Story of Beer” presented by Chicago beer historian Liz Garibay. The program will be presented from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Horticultural Hall, 330 Broad St., Lake Geneva. The cost is $25 per person. The program includes a tasting of five craft beers and snacks provided by Lake Geneva Country Meats. By the late 1800s, Chicago’s brewing industry was booming. The middle-west was a land of beer opportunity and a young and ambitious German immigrant, Conrad Seipp, became major player in this story. Beginning his career as a beer-wagon driver, Seipp eventually created a brewing powerhouse – becoming the largest producer of beer in the city and dominating much of the 19th century beer industry. His success led him to build Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva, a locale that would become a special place for the beer baron and his family. Beer historian Liz Garibay will provide an overview of Chicago’s brewing history and the role Conrad Seipp played in the industry. Garibay is also working to develop a beer museum in Chicago and will provide additional information about the project.

Lake Geneva’s Winterfest, Jan. 27 through Feb. 4, is a celebration of all things winter. For more than 20 years it has been highlighted by the annual U.S. Championship Snow Sculpture competition held in front of the Riviera and now spilling over into Flat Iron Park. The festival has grown to include a variety of other activities, including but not limited to, the Lake Geneva Chili Cookoff, Winterfest Showcase at the Riviera, human dog sled race, the Amazing Yeti Race, helicopter rides, historic teas and tours, and a variety of special activities at businesses throughout the City of Lake Geneva. Fifteen teams, each consisting of three smow sculptors, compete for the national title, said Don Berg, cofounder with Fred Raasch, of Winter Fun the organization that created and runs the competition. “Each state that holds a sanctioned state competition is allowed to send its winning team, although Alaska is allowed to send two teams,” he said. “In addition the winner of the previous year’s national competition is also invited to return.” This year the 2017 winning team is not able to return because of other engagements, so the second-place team will be at the competition. The snow sculptures begin with a cylindrical, compacted pile of snow 8 feet by 10 feet high. Because of the large amount of snow needed to form the blocks, snow is trucked in from the Grand Geneva Resort and poured into the forms. The actual sculpting began Jan. 31 and

continues until 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. Some sculptors are out late at night or working through the night, putting their design into final form. Sometimes the need to work late at night or all night is because of weather conditions, while others just need the extra time because of the intricacy of their design.

The sculptures are out in the open and visitors are free to watch the artists turn the block of snow into the finished product. The sculptures are judged by the members of the teams in the contest. No one is allowed to vote for their own work. The sculptures are judged on creativity (50 percent), technique (30 percent), and message or visual force (20 percent). Three awards are given: Gold, the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Champion Award; Silver, the State of Wisconsin Award; and Bronze, the City of Lake Geneva Award. In addition, visitors to the competition are allowed to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The award ceremony is at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. Each snow sculpture takes about 100 man or woman hours

BRIDES ADVISED TO STAY TRUE TO PERSONAL STYLE For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wedding. With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable.
First things first Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress – and don’t forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the stores and then be open to all other options. Firm yet flexible There will be no shortage of opinions about your choice of a wedding dress, but the
decision, ultimately, is the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be “contenders.” Go for a flattering fit Remember: Your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style – not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Planning a wedding is often a frustrating task as couples strive to complete every detail on their list necessary to ensure a perfect day. But of all the many tasks, the most exciting one, at least for the bride and mother of the bride, is finding the right gown. For most women, this is the most important dress they will ever buy and wear. It is vital to not only find the one that makes the bride look and feel beautiful, but to be certain that it is purchased from a reliable, knowledgeable shop. Then the bride can feel much better about the gown arriving and alterations being completed on time. All About the Gown by Judy has used that name only since August 2017, but the bridal store has a much longer history. Germaine’s Bridal was

established over 30 years ago. The well-known, popular shop is located on Main Street in Lake Geneva. When Germaine decided to retire and spend time with her family, she offered to sell the business to her manager, Judy Lew, who said yes to the dress, or rather, yes to all the dresses. Lew managed Germaine’s for over five years before becoming the owner. She is a seamstress known for creating custom drapery, but the bridal business was her love.

Her daughter, Stefany, was working in Boston and returned to Lake Geneva to work at the shop. Stefany worked at Germaine’s for two years as a stylist before moving to Boston, where she worked as a client relations agent for a bridal company. They agreed that their relationship is what makes everything work. “My mom is my best friend,” Stefany said. “Each of us has different ideas on styles, but they blend together well. and the higher end line of Amare. “We have enough space to hang all of our dresses in the store,” Judy said. “Many bridal shops keep their dresses in the back room. They bring out what they believe the customer would like. We have all of our dresses on display for the bride to look over.” Having the dresses in an open area where brides can peruse all of the gowns gives them a better idea of what style they might like.
COLORS ARE NOT TABOO While many still think of a bridal dress as being the whitest white available, times have changed. “Ivory, blush or mocha are the most popular colors for brides,” Stefany said. “They often have a top layer of lace or chiffon over the slightly tinted gown.” Judy said brides often end up choosing a different style than what they had envisioned. “We recommend that the bride picks out a few dresses of different styles to try,” she said. “That will give her a better feeling for the look she hopes to achieve.” All About the Gown’s large bridal suite must be reserved by appointment. The room is light and airy, and guests can relax over a complimentary glass of champagne or a mimosa. Meanwhile, a stylist finds out what kind of look the bride hopes to achieve and what her budget allows before starting to

One of the big questions always is, who to bring to help choose the dress? “Well, of course, the mother of the bride and grandma and sometimes even the father are part of the group that will be there,” Stefany said. “Other than that, invite one or two positive friends. Too many people results in too many opinions. It is amazing, but when the bride tries on the right dress, it is obvious that it is her dress even before she says a word.”
SHOP EARLY, GIVE IT TIME Gowns need to be ordered six to eight months before the wedding. Alterations must be done about one month before the wedding. “If you don’t have that much time to order, dresses may be bought off the rack and altered to fit you,” Judy said. “If there is a dress that you really would like that we don’t carry and you have a picture of it, it also can be made by a seamstress if there is ample time.” Just as fashion styles change, so do styles for bridal gowns. “Strapless gowns are not as popular as they once were,” Stefany said. “Most brides want a sleeve, whether it is a small cap sleeve or long sleeves. Sleeves can always be added to any dress. “The open back is very popular these days,” Stefany added. “The mermaid and fitand-flair styles that have been popular the last few years are still popular, but newer styles are becoming more popular. Trends always change.” The illusion back is most popular. Some are plain, while others may be trimmed with lace. Today’s gowns come in a variety of fabrics. Lace, with or without beading, is still the most popular. Often the lace is the outer layer of the dress with the lightly colored layer beneath. Many different fabrics are acceptable, including crepe, which has become more popular despite being clingy.

time, too. “Blusher veils are no longer used and headpieces have gotten smaller,” Judy said. “No more large tiaras, but rather simple headbands or combs to hold it in place. Cathedral veils are very popular with today’s brides. When the veil is removed at the reception, decorative sparkly combs are often placed in the bride’s hair.” The way bridal attendants dress also has changed. No more of the monochromatic identical dresses; attendants have many choices today. “Some bridal parties will all wear the same color dress but in different styles,” Judy said. “Others may choose to wear various shades of the same color in the same or different style dresses. Most prefer the full length style.” She recommends ordering the bridesmaid dresses at the same time, especially if they are the same color, to be certain that they receive them from the same dye lot.

The right song for a special dance
COUPLES SHOULDN’T LEAVE IT UP TO THE BAND OR DJ Wedding traditionalists know there will be a number of required dances at the reception to keep them on their toes. From spotlight dances to special requests, the night is sure to be filled with memorable moments on the dance floor. While it may be tempting to leave musical selections entirely up to a band or disc jockey, couples should choose the songs they dance to during specialized dances. A bride’s dance with her father and a groom’s dance with his mother are special moments during a wedding reception that can evoke strong emotions and a few tears from family and friends. Part of what makes these moments so memorable are the songs themselves. Choosing the right songs can be difficult, but there are ways to make the decisionmaking process go more smoothly. Start out by making a list of the songs that you like and believe convey feelings that you want to share with others. Ask your father or mother to make a similar list. These lists can be compared and then a common element may become apparent. Many brides and grooms will happily defer the choice to their parents, which can give parents a role in the wedding planning and make them feel like they have had an important hand in the festivities – rather than just signing a check or showing up for the fun.
When considering songs, select among those that have a special meaning or represent the bond between parent and child. If your dancing partner and you are confident on the dance floor, there are many different songs that can be fitting, from country to soft rock to jazz. Timing of the song is also important. Father-daughter and mother-son dances are not the times for lengthy songs. While these certainly may be good choices for when the DJ needs to take a bathroom break, their length could leave you on the dance floor too long and bore your guests as a result. Keep spotlight songs short and to the point. After all, the goal is to have guests up dancing and enjoying themselves. ost weddings used to be held close to home. This has all changed because of destination weddings becoming so popular. For some, that means traveling out of the country or to a distant state such as Hawaii or Florida. Lazy Cloud Lodge in Fontana. The Lazy Cloud Inn consists of nine suites, each with a queen-sized bed, fireplace and double whirlpool. There is a small kitchen and a sitting area with a table and chairs. They offer enough space for small gatherings before or after the wedding. Rooms have private entrances that open directly outside. A continental breakfast is included with each room and can be enjoyed as breakfast in bed. The Lazy Cloud Lodge in Fontana is located near Geneva Lake, George Williams College and the Yerkes Observatory.
It consists of eight suites, most with king-size beds, and two rooms with queensized beds. The three acres of landscaped grounds provide a great outdoor area to walk or just sit and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Lodge holds a full buffet breakfast. And special packages such as flowers can be arranged. The Lodge also is available for small weddings on-site. “We frequently hold small first and second weddings here,” owner Sara Rubin said. The establishment does not offer special amenities for bridal parties not holding a wedding on-site.
The Lazy Cloud at either location would be a great place for a small wedding party to stay or as the place for individual guests of the wedding to make their home before or afterward if they wish to turn the weekend into a mini vacation. Furry Friends Shelter settles into new facility

There are a few things Lakeland Animal Shelter is never short of, cats and large dogs for instance. And while ongoing needs, such as supplies, keep the operation running on a dayto-day basis, efforts to raise the funds needed to complete its “extreme shelter makeover” is also a priority. Three million dollars has already been raised and the new shelter opened in 2016. The front portion is finished and is housing cats and small SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
dogs. But, as of late 2017, approximately 10,000 square feet still needed to be completed at a cost of roughly $500,000. Kristen Perry, the shelter’s executive director, said the goal was to have everyone – and everything – under one roof sometime this winter. “Because of how much more efficient the new building is we’ve managed to keep up without having to add staff even though we’re operating in both buildings. Once it’s finished and everything is here, we’re hoping to cut costs

even though we’ll have about three times as much space as we did,” Perry said. One way the efficiency will improve is through the HVAC units including cat suites that will feature individual, separate units where they can stay initially. “About 90 percent of the cats that come to us get an upper respiratory infection, which require medications and sometimes other meds and force feeding to get them through that process before they’re ready to be adopted,” Perry said. The shelter will also feature up-to-date, sterile surgical rooms to allow on-site surgeries, in part thanks to input from longtime shelter supporter and veterinarian Dr. Mona Hodkiewicz. “She’s been a huge support and donates her time. We’ve also had numerous vets that have said once the have the new surgery areas completed, they’ll be glad to help out,” Perry said. Another upgrade is a large laundry room with industrial-sized machines – an important addition, according to Perry, because every animal that comes into the shelter gets clean bedding and if they soil it, it’s changed out.
More natural lighting, a larger cage system, a food prep room with a commercial dishwasher and a kitten nursery were also in the plans. “And we’ll have meet-n-greet rooms to allow people to spend time with an animal. The things we somewhat splurge on will help us house them more efficiently and in turn, make them ready for adoption sooner,” Perry said.
Cats, dogs and more
Perry said Lakeland Animal Shelter generally has anywhere from 40 to 60 dogs available and 150 to 400 cats. “Prior to the new building, we worked with about 2,500 animals each year but now it’s about 3,300 and mainly cats, I think because people think we have more room with the new building,” she said. The shelter accepts animals from all of Walworth County regardless of the animals’ condition, Perry said, and when space allows, they will make exceptions and take animals from beyond the county, particularly small dogs since they are adopted out quickly.

“People choose small dogs because they’re less intimidating and seem easier to handle but we have some great, large dogs available that would be a great addition to a family,” she said. The average stay at the shelter for small dogs is three weeks, for large dogs it’s four months and for cats, it’s about eight months, she said. While it’s common to think of dogs and cats at a shelter, Perry said they have numerous types of animals available at any given time. “We currently have a pot-bellied pig named Linus because he likes blankets. He was surrendered to us and like I said, we take any animal,” she said. Lakeland is the only shelter in the county with an open intake policy, according to Perry. “We take animals in any condition no matter how full we are,” Perry said, adding unless an animal is too sick to be treated or too aggressive to be suitable for adoption, the shelter is committed to giving it “as long as it takes to find the new home they deserve.”

Volunteer opportunities include dog walking, cat room monitoring, animalassisted therapy, fostering, fundraising and helping out at 9 Lives Boutique. Ceil Kowalski, of Delavan, volunteers at the animal shelter once a week. She said she likes cats and has two at home but her husband told her not to bring anymore home. She said she enjoys sitting with the cats, interacting with them and feeding them treats.
9 Lives Boutique, 835 Geneva St. in Lake Geneva, is a resale shop owned by the shelter and run by volunteers. It opened in 2007 and features a variety of donated merchandise including jewelry, furniture, designer clothing and housewares. Financial donations can be made numerous ways including a one-time donation, memberships that offer varying levels beginning at $9 a month and include discounts on shelter gear and adoption fees, even aluminum cans, which can be dropped off at the shelter in bags.
There is a grocery receipt rebate program at Sentry in Walworth, Burlington and Twin Lakes, and Frank’s Piggly Wiggly in Elkhorn and East Troy. Customers turn in their receipts to Lakeland Animal Shelter to help the shelter receive 1 percent of the qualifying total. The shelter hosts four major fundraisers each year: Second Chances Charity Dinner, Shelter Scramble, Sip ‘n Purr, and Whisker Walk. The majority of the donations the shelter receives, Perry said, is from individuals including people requesting donations in lieu of gifts for birthdays, weddings and other special occasions. “A lot of kids are doing that, asking for donations for the shelter and then bringing them here. It’s really neat because it’s their idea and comes from their heart,” she said. Local author turns book into film Screening is scheduled for March in Genoa City

A Genoa City author has undertaken his first film-making venture, turning his book “The Flickering Light” into a movie with the same name. Robb Chase’s novels are in the fantasy genre, and “The Flickering Light,” published in 2014, centers on the idea that “there is darkness in the hearts of us all, but there is also light,” Chase said. Chase gathered a cast and crew of about 20 people to film the movie over three to four weeks in April and May at the Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Camp in Oregon, Ill., southwest of Rockford. His star is a 13-year-old girl from western Missouri, Amanda Brade, who plays 15-year-old Millaney, the main character in the movie. The 90-minute film starts with a young boy walking through a snowy canyon – filmed at a state park in Illinois in March – holding a dagger dripping with blood. A flower blows across the icy ground and stops next to the boy’s boot. The boy drops
the dagger and picks up the flower. The film then skips ahead 10 years, and the boy, now a young man, is on house arrest for the crime he committed as a boy, and the audience learns the boy was possessed by a spirit. The boy meets a young woman, Millaney, who awakens the spirit within him that’s been dormant for years. Chase said the movie was filmed on a $6,000 budget, the bulk of which was feeding and housing the cast and crew at the campground during filming. He said he rented some props, bought costumes at Goodwill, played two parts himself and has yet to pay his cast and crew. “Most of them do it for the exposure and demo reel,” he said. Chase said he has some editing and “tweaking” left to do on the movie including a voiceover from an actress but will be ready to show the film in a couple of weeks. The movie is set in medieval times, and Chase said he had some difficulty concealing some of the modern elements of
the campground where the movie was shot. He hopes movie-goers will overlook those things and appreciate the story behind his debut film. Some of the movie-making tricks Chase used included using a leaf-blower to move the flower across the frozen ground in the opening scene and then editing the sound of the leaf blower out. Chase will have a test run of the movie at 6 p.m. March 3 at 332 Fellows, 332 Fellows Road, Genoa City. The movie will be shown for free, and moviegoers can order food from 332 Fellows’ menu. The bar and restaurant’s specialties are burgers, French onion soup and homemade chips. Chase said he is looking for other venues to show the movie and has his own projector and screen to show the film in facilities without movie equipment. The author said writing books and making movies is at the root of one of mankind’s oldest traditions. “I’ve always loved telling stories,” he said.
