– The 27th Annual event in Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park, Downtown Lake Geneva features the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. Witness the snow sculpting teams at work during a threeday competition creating larger-than-life snow sculptures. Sculpting begins at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 and concludes at 1 p.m. on Feb. 5. Sculptures will remain up for viewing through Sunday and beyond. In addition to the snow sculpting competition, visitors will find more wintery fun during Winterfest week, including the third annual Downtown Ice Sculpture Walk, Igloos & Bonfires on the Beach, and more frosty events, activities and specials around the Lake Geneva area.

Former NBA player works to connect kids with the land

arcus Landry, former Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers player, who retired from the NBA last year, is hard at work down on the farm – in East Troy. The newly formed Beulah Family Homestead Farm officially opened in December. “I decided to retire from the NBA eight months ago and I was always interested in farming and the land and animals and different things like that,” Landry said. “I knew this is what I wanted to do.” Landry said he’s been involved with agriculture for several years, teaching people about the land and working to provide fresh food for those in need in the inner city. “I even ended up starting a food pantry in 2019 at my local church on the south side of Milwaukee,” he said. His move to create the Beulah Family Homestead just seemed like a natural progression of his work to bring awareness of farming, especially to the inner city kids and adults who may not have had a chance to experience life on a farm. “I feel like farming has become sort of a lost art,” Landry said. “It needs to come back. The main thing I feel like a lot of kids feel the only opportunity, especially in the inner city, is to dribble a basketball. There’s so much more out there than that! “I want to give them the opportunity to see someone like myself, who has played in the NBA for 12 years, that there’s so much more out there.” According to a news release, the Beulah Family Homestead was established to help revitalize the community by integrating agriculture and sports; with the vision of cultivating stronger relationships through planting (agriculture) and playing (sports) with the intent to provide lessons and skills to help build a solid family foundation. The mission of the farm is to provide a platform to enhance opportunities for underprivileged youth and families as well as to educate youth and families, including athletes about the importance of agriculture to help build self-sustaining homes. “Sustainability is so important,”

Landry said. “We’re teaching that and the importance of agriculture with classes for kids and adults. We teach all this with biblical principals, based on the sheep and cattle we have. We teach a lot of that. “That’s another reason we do this, to share the Gospel with people.” Landry lives on the farm with his wife and four children and said they are enjoying getting to know the area and community. “The kids love living out here,” he said. “I want them to know there is more to life than the picture the world paints. I think a lot of the time we get the image that everything needs to be glamorous, like social media depicts, but that’s not real. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

There is more happiness out there in the real world than on social media. That’s the image that people get, that everything has to be perfect and glamorous and I think that effects kids when things don’t go their way. They can’t handle it because they don’t know how. With the farm, they see that life isn’t perfect and it’s OK. They’re OK.”

Collaborating to provide more The Beulah Family Homestead is collaborating with WestCare Wisconsin and Harambee Community Involvement Center, 7

a community-based organization that provides information and services to meet the needs of City of Milwaukee residents and the community at large. They offer a platform of working together through direct action, advocacy, and community services. “When we were looking for land and ended up finding some out here, we moved from New Berlin, and we connected with WestCare. We started doing things like chickens and turkeys with them. Since then, our partnership with WestCare has really grown. We teach about the sustainability of turkeys and gave away turkeys for Thanksgiving.” WestCare Wisconsin, an affiliate of WestCare Foundation, is part of a family of tax-exempt nonprofit organizations that provides a wide spectrum of health and human services in both residential and outpatient environments. The collective services have the necessary expertise to be that resource to the communities we serve in the areas of prevention, substance abuse and addiction treatment, homeless and runaway shelters, domestic violence treatment and prevention, and mental health programs. The services are available to adults, children, adolescents, and families. The agency specializes in helping people traditionally considered difficult to treat, such as those who are indigent, have multiple disorders, or are involved with the criminal justice system.

The farm has also partnered with OpCom, a hydroponics company, which donated hydroponic units. “We do hydroponics classes with kids when they come around,” Landry said. “It’s just another way to teach sustainability.” The Beulah Family Homestead is a working farm with a greenhouse, gardens, hydroponics and livestock of chickens, turkeys and cows. Lake Geneva Clue Room offers mysteries to solve Escape room activity rises when rain and snow fall

Imagine being in a locked room, needing to figure out not just one puzzle but several – each leading to the next – in order to engineer your escape. This basic premise has led to “escape rooms,” a chance to solve a mystery or a crime – a new indoor form of entertainment. Andrew Currier, the general manager at the Lake Geneva Clue Room – located in the downtown area at 772 W. Main St. – said business is starting to pick back up after more than a year’s uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re still here,” Currier said. “It’s a matter of people feeling adventurous enough.” “We’re seeing quite the uptick (in business),” he added. “In all truthfulness, we’re probably the only one in town that prays for the bad weather, the rainy weather, because that drives people indoors.” In addition to providing immersive experiences – visitors have an hour to tackle everything from a double agent to the mob to a string of carnival murders – Lake Geneva Clue Room has also adapted due to the pandemic. One of the biggest promotion points, Currier said, is that the site is taking extra precautions for COVID-19. All staff members are masked, and guests are told masks are recommended. Air purifiers are also in the rooms, and staff cleans the rooms afterward. But perhaps the best part of the rooms? Once a room is booked, it is kept booked for that one person or a group that may join them – or in other words, customers set their own social circle. “Even before all this stuff started happening, we were kind of leaning toward that,” Currier said. “People like to have rooms to themselves. “For the vast majority, people like to have their own group, or bubble, or stay with that.” The four different rooms range in difficulty, starting with the three-key difficulty of the double agent up to the fivekey difficulty of the carnival murders and the mob. In between is the four-star “Pilfered Playbook,” which has competitors trying to get their opponent’s playbook for the big game. In that case, there are two identical rooms, meaning a group can pick which team they are fighting against or book two at the same time and have two groups

compete against each other. Each room is themed and atmospheric. Double agent room is like a regular person’s apartment, while the carnival room has your normal variety of midway games. Without giving away the secrets, well, the secrets are in the details. “My all-time favorite quote is ‘oh, there’s not much here,’” Currier said. “And sometimes they’re stuck in there for the full hour.” It is a matter, Currier said, of finding the right clues and then being able to piece them together. That then allows a team to open a lock, solve a puzzle or figure out a SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

code. “With the eventual hope of finding the code to escaping,” Currier added. “Everything is completely family friendly. For the most part, everything is rudimentary and in the room to help you out.” There is a per-person cost for each room, with a minimum of three people per room on the weekends. For 19 years, Hawks View has been the home of the longest running bridal showcase in southeast Wisconsin. This year the fair will be held on Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the golf club, 7377 Krueger Rd., Lake Geneva. “The bridal showcase is a complimentary event held at Hawk’s View and sponsored by Hawk’s View Golf Club and Premier Bride to provide everything the couple needs to have the perfect wedding,” said Becky Farber, bridal consultant for Hawk’s View. This year, according to Farber, the event will be conducted in a more open house style with vendors available to share their knowledge, prices and services on a oneto-one basis. Each vendor will have a space along the perimeter of the wedding venue. Couples will have the opportunity to meet with the vendors that are of interest and ask questions. Each vendor will also offer short introductions to their products or service. Knowing exactly what is included makes budgeting much easier for the couple. The event is open to the bride and groom, maid of honor and the bride’s parents and will provide information to make great choices for the wedding reception. Throughout the show there will be several raffle drawings offering prizes donated by the vendors. These may include a one-night stay at the Sybaris for the wedding couple, an Easter or Mother’s Day brunch, or a round of golf at Hawk’s View and many other prizes. “This year we are also focusing on the Hawk’s View venue itself as many of the visitors have not booked a venue when they attend the bridal show. We will have the entire room set up as it would be for a wedding. We have recently undergone updating to the space, that has included replacing draperies and adding new sconce lighting,” Faber said. “The outdoor patio where the ceremony is held with its beautiful view of the open golf course is also perfect for dancing on pleasant evenings.” The large bride’s room is available for the bridal party’s use the day of the event. It may be used to relax before the ceremony, or as a space to have their hair or makeup done so it is perfect for the ceremony. Or perhaps it will just be a space to relax while enjoying a light lunch or a refreshing drink to suit the needs of the party The time at the bridal show will be filled with wine and food tastings, and the beauty of all things wedding to give the visiting couples the feeling of an actual event. Performers from DJs to live music groups will share their style and costs with the prospective brides. Photographers will offer

maid of honor, bridal party and even the groom to enjoy a day dedicated to everything needed to host the perfect wedding. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 1:30 p.m., allowing enough time to enjoy the beauty of the facility at Evergreen along with the opportunity to meet with a variety of representatives from local wedding service providers. “Upon entering Evergreen, a taste of champagne will be offered. Other house wines will also be available for tasting to help the party choose what is best for their wedding, especially if they are holding it here at Evergreen,” shared Dori Beck, the wedding coordinator for Evergreen Country Club. “Each bride to be will be given a bridal bag filled with coupons and small gifts. The brides will be given a sash to wear to distinguish them for the day.” While there will be a variety of vendors, Evergreen itself will be on display for those who have not yet settled on a wedding venue. Evergreen offers a choice of the indoor Evergreen Room or the outdoor pavilion. The pavilion is a three-season room that allows guests to enjoy the outdoors during mild weather. Outside the Evergreen Room there is a beautiful patio with a gorgeous waterfall in the background where ceremonies are held. “We are the only place that offers no minimum for food costs. Our venue offers a package but it is adjustable to meet the needs and budget of the couple,” Beck said. “When the couple signs for the venue as their place for their wedding, we give them a free round of golf. And if they sign the contract for the space on the day of the Bridal Fair, they will also receive half off the fee for the rental of the space.” According to Beck, the facility has good rapport with its bridal fair vendors, many of whom have returned yearly. Among these preferred vendors that will be at the fair are DJ Felix Entertainment, who in addition to providing DJ music also provide lighting displays, and photo booths. Lotus Fly photography will be available to discuss photographic needs with the brides to be and will actually be taking photos at the bridal fair. Still looking for that perfect bridal gown? Enjoy the beautiful dresses that will be on display at the bridal fair. A Savvy Bride will have a collection of gowns and formal wear for the brides to peruse. Some brides have been planning every detail of their wedding since their teenage years. Other brides are at a complete loss about what they envision, what they want in a dress or what they see as the perfect decorative look for the venue. “They need help to step out of the box and view the many resources available,” Beck said. “Our many preferred vendors offer so many new services from onsite hair and makeup to onsite teeth whitening that those who haven’t been involved in a wedding in some time may not be aware of.”

Even the traditional wedding cake has changed. More couples are leaning to the dainty finger sweets, cupcakes, chocolatecovered strawberries and even doughnuts. “Doughnuts are especially popular,” added Beck. “So be sure to stop at our pastry vendors, including Pastries by Chad, who will offer unique sweet custom cakes or desserts.” There will be a variety of vendors who can help the couple find the perfect flower style for the tables and their bouquets. Tommi’s Garden Blooms will be on hand to help inspire brides with floral designs. Need to plan the honeymoon or a destination wedding? EVERGREEN GOLF CLUB Evergreen Golf Club, just north of Elkhorn on Highway 12, has the amenities for the perfect wedding. The main clubhouse is set on a beautifully landscaped hill surrounded by manicured lawns and plantings of perennial flowers and prairie grasses. Entering the reception area of the building, the view into the main banquet room reveals a spacious room with 15-foot ceilings and beautiful chandeliers. It

Located on the west shore of Geneva Lake in Fontana, away from the busy hustle and bustle of downtown Lake Geneva, The Upper Room at Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn offers a special place to hold a small to medium private event. While Fontana is still a vibrant Geneva Lake community it does not have the busy downtown area of the larger Lake Geneva and focuses more on the lake activities than on the busy shopping area. “Since 2005 we have provided the Upper Room of Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn for private events including wedding rehearsal dinners, corporate events and family parties. Wedding rehearsal dinners are the most popular although some smaller weddings have held their receptions here and have

enjoyed the beautiful location,” said Julie Ieronimo, manager of the venue.

All about the view

The Upper Room is a beautiful space for a private event. It offers an unobstructed seven-mile view of Geneva Lake that is a spectacular sight on a sunny day. And the lakefront is the perfect backdrop for those special photographs to commemorate the event that is being celebrated. The space holds up to a maximum of 75 guests depending on the configuration of tables and chairs. The room is open to a variety of floor plans offering the lake view to most seated guests. The floor plan is easily customized for any event and the Upper Room’s staff is always ready to work with the customer to be certain that the final look is just what is desired. “Occasionally couples will marry on a

boat or in the gazebo in the adjoining park before coming to the Upper Room for their reception,” said Ieronimo.

The place for private events

While many are familiar with Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn as a comfortable bar and grill where residents and visitors gather – especially on warm summer days – to enjoy a cold beverage and a choice from their fine selection of food, they may not be aware of the beautiful upstairs room which may be booked for a private event. Ieronimo described the look of the room as clean and simple. The lower walls are covered with wainscoting stained in a natural wood tone. both the building and Fontana. The Upper Room is light and cheery in part from the large windows, which cover two walls, giving a 180-degree view of the lake and the shoreline. The room is air conditioned, but on cool afternoons or on balmy evenings, the guests sometimes prefer to turn the air off and enjoy the lake breeze. A full-service bar is located in the center of the room and it often becomes a favorite gathering place during an event. Since it is in the center it does not block the tables and allows guests not gathering at the bar, to move about freely and to enjoy the view. The room including tables, chairs, linens, and the bartender are included in the rental fee. The space is rented on a three-hour basis. More blocks of time can be added for an additional fee. Ieronimo and her staff are flexible to make certain that the visions of the customers work well in the room and convey the feeling they wish to achieve. Decorations may be brought in to customize the look, whether it is a rehearsal dinner, a wedding, a bridal or baby shower, a family reunion, an anniversary, corporate event, or a celebration of life, it is important that the venue shares the vision expected by the hosts. “Many of our customers often return to hold events here. A rehearsal dinner or small wedding or anniversary event may be held here because the couple met downstairs at Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn and their romance bloomed from there,” Ieronimo said. A successful bridal shower may bring the couple back for a rehearsal dinner and then when the first child comes along, it is time for a baptismal event.

He also added the hamburgers to the menu that are so well known today. A non-anticipated change occurred in December 1987 when a fire destroyed the building. The building was rebuilt and reopened seven months later, with the grill, which had survived the fire, continuing to cook the famous hamburgers. Today the spirit of Chuck’s continues. The second floor has been turned into the beautiful event room. The James Whowell family continues to run the restaurant. Five sets of siblings and a father and son duo are among those involved in managing the restaurant according to Ieronimo. “Our employees are mostly long term. They have been with us for 10 years or more. They know many of the customers well,” added Ieronimo. The beauty of the location, including the outdoor deck, attract visitors while the service, fine drinks and food bring them back. Area author chronicles family’s dairy farm history in new book

F

arming is deep within Corey Geiger’s DNA. So, too, is a love of writing. The melding of the two disparate disciplines has come together for the Mukwonago resident in his book, “On a Wisconsin Family Farm: Historic Tales of Character, Community and Culture,” that is the outgrowth of the cultivation of stories he accumulated from ancestors of bygone eras. Geiger, who grew up on a dairy farm, serves as the lead editor of the Fort Atkinsonbased Hoard’s Dairyman magazine. He also has used his writing skills over the years to chronicle his family’s farming history. The personal tales initially were published in a series of local newspaper columns – 95 total – and have since morphed into a collection of short stories in the 31-chapter compilation of his ancestor’s experiences. All told, Geiger captures six generations of local tales in his book. Anna Satorie, who Geiger describes as “a maternal maverick,” is among the featured farmers. Satorie bucked a trend in the first decade of 1900 and became the sole owner of her family’s homestead. “People were encouraging me to write a book,” Geiger recalls of the seed that was planted years back. “I did have the idea in the back of my head for some time, but their encouragement pushed me to do that.” “On a Wisconsin Family Farm” was initially published through Arcadia Publishing in March and most recently went into a third printing cycle because prior editions have been selling out. As he reflects on his near-first year of publishing the book, Geiger said he has come to a full realization the newspaper columns and subsequent book have struck a chord with readers. “It has been very rewarding,” he said of the response. “One of the consistent themes that I hear is that it reminds people of their families. It reminds them of stories their grandparents have told them.” There is another recurring theme Geiger

said he has fielded from readers – one he took note of as his grandparents grew older. “People will tell me that they wish they would have listened more closely (to their elders) when they were younger,” he said. As a child, Geiger said he was captivated by some of his grandparents’ stories and did begin listening more closely as they entered their 80s. “I heard stories – they were great storytellers – about what happened,” Geiger said of the trials and triumphs of operating a farm at a time when some of today’s modern conveniences were not commonplace. Geiger initially had planned on publishing “On a Wisconsin Family Farm” in 2019, but a series of events, including the passing of his father that year, ultimately postponed the release to this year. “My dad was able to read most of the story manuscripts because I was pretty far along, so that was cool,” Geiger said of a bittersweet anecdote of the book assembly process. The book is historical, of course, but in a showing of how life comes full circle, it also touches on themes – such as immigration and enduring pandemics – that SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

are front-of-mind in today’s society. “Americans are blessed – they really are,” Geiger said of a concept he tried to drive home in the book. “And I think, when you read this book, you realize how precious freedom was and how hard people worked so their children had a better life and how important education was.” While “On a Wisconsin Family Farm” has an undeniable agricultural focus, Geiger said there are other universal principles he hopes readers take away after turning the book’s pages. “I think it’s been a conversation starter for people and their family’s oral history,” he said. “If that’s one of the legacies of this book, I’m very, very happy with that.”

There’s a new hot yoga studio and vacation rental in Burlington by Mike Ramczyk CORRESPONDENT

Relax your mind, and let your conscience be free, you’re now rolling the flow of the M-A-R-T. OK, that cheesy Jay-Z reference wasn’t an attempt for a laugh. It’s true. The Mart in downtown Burlington brings relaxation, free conscience, mindfulness and “flow” in two forms – an apartment rental upstairs and a hot yoga studio, Wisconsin Power Yoga, downstairs. While The Mart and WPY are separate entities, they are in the same building, which is owned by Molly Elsbury, 32, and her husband, Dustin, 33, both Burlington natives. Molly and her friend Amy Bielinski, 29, run the spacious hot yoga studio, and Molly and Dustin are in charge of the exquisitely renovated apartment rental – compete with exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, new furniture, a huge kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. And while you may have heard of yoga, hot yoga is a different animal. Picture 12 to 15 people in a yoga class, constantly moving from pose to

pose despite 95-degree temperatures and 70-percent humidity, for an hour, just focusing on breathing and being present in the moment. Shutting down the mind from the crazy thoughts of the day, like what to grab for dinner, where to run the kids for practice and what is your boss going to say about last week’s presentation. “We’re really trying to give people a mindfulness practice for your daily lives, taking a step aside from our crazy thoughts that are constantly running,” Molly said last week. “Some people come for the idea of the workout, but the end goal is the meditation process. The whole class is designed to set you up for detaching from your thoughts and focusing on what you’re doing right now. That’s the start of a meditation practice, you feel great because you just spent an hour focusing on one thing.” “You’re giving yourself an hour to be yourself.”

Discovering a passion

What a concept in this day and age of smartphones, screens and distractions. Molly, who was a dance minor at the

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and dabbled in yoga, started getting passionate about it after taking a hot yoga class by Amy Bielinski in 2019 at The Landing in Burlington. She was so intrigued that she and Dustin headed out to Rhode Island to earn a hot yoga certification, and she came back to Burlington eager to teach with Bielinski. “We started with the yoga business. We started teaching hot yoga out of a garage a few blocks from here – in a garage at her uncle’s house,” Molly said about Bielinski. “I started taking Amy’s classes, and I was hooked. I fell in love with the style of yoga, I wanted to be involved in this. We decided to team up. I was like, ‘We have to do this, it’s so cool, it’s really unique.” Luckily for Molly, her husband just so happens to be in the general contracting and carpentry business with his dad, so when they were looking for a place to buy to open their own studio in 2019, the former Burlington Laundromat on Washington Street adjacent to Flippy’s was the perfect place. It had been dormant for a few years, but there’s tons of space and a great downtown location.

And a little bit of family history didn’t hurt. It turns out Molly’s greatgrandfather, Robert Ruedebusch, used to own the building from 1950 to 1986, when it was called “The Music Mart.” Many locals bought their first records there, and when Dustin and Molly were “completely gutting” the building, people would walk by and tell them they used to buy music there. The place also sold instruments and offered music lessons. Molly wanted to honor her greatgrandfather, so she made “The Mart” sign the same design as the old sign. Also, there’s an old photo framed on the brick wall of the kitchen of the apartment rental – something that makes Molly beam with pride. She is the youngest of three sisters, and both her and Bielinski recently had babies. In fact, Molly has three children 6 and under, and her four-month-old baby was sleeping through mom’s interview with the newspaper. “I guess that’s what happens when two young women are running a business,” Molly joked about her and Amy both being young and having babies. With the hot yoga studio getting up and running in February 2021, the Mart opened in May. It’s been a challenge opening during a pandemic, but they are starting have classes every week, and the apartment rental is already booked for 75 days, mostly weekends, in 2022. When they bought the building, it was just two, one-bedroom apartments upstairs and nothing downstairs. “The place was a mess, the basement and all the way up here,” Dustin said. “It was time to start over with this place.” Molly and Dustin have been trying to get the word out with The Mart. It’s mostly been used for wedding parties, whether it’s the bridesmaids staying over the night before and bride and groom staying the night of the wedding. Also, there was a family that recently stayed five nights for the holidays. The convenience to downtown, walking to Mercantile Hall and Veterans Terrace for events is ideal. They’re not on Air B&B websites or trying to make it a grand production. “We have a website, it’s our own booking service, themartapt.com, we’re not in a huge rush,” Molly said. “We want to keep it word of mouth 30

and a local thing.” “It sleeps eight, there’s a pull-out sofa and washer and dryer in the unit. We’d like to have more families use it. We get vacationers in town visiting family.”

A unique experience

Molly says the hot yoga experience is a synchronized vinyasa flow, which is a unique style of yoga that matches your breath with each movement as well as matching your breath and movement with everyone else in the class. “The environment of the room also aides in keeping your awareness on what you’re doing while you’re doing it,” Molly said. “The challenge of our class it to be aware of one breath at a time, moment to moment.” “It may sound intimidating but we are trained as your teachers to help guide you through this. Anyone is welcome. It’s open to anyone with an open mind.” What’s the difference between yoga and hot yoga? “The focus of the breath with the movement,” Molly said. “Take complete, full breaths, keeping your focus on that and not letting your mind drift away, not getting distracted by a sound.” “Your body’s so warmed up before class starts, your muscles, joints and everything move much easier.” People can walk in and take a class for $15, and there is also a deal where people can buy three classes for $23, and attend those at any time. The bottom line is with both businesses, people can come downtown and get a relaxing, invigorating experience, one they aren’t soon to forget. So what are the ultimate goals for The Mart and Wisconsin Power Yoga? “We’d like to keep offering this cool, little downtown haven,” Molly said. “We want it to be a local treasure. Maybe there’s other businesses that are looking to hire someone and put them up for a weekend or something. We kind of want it to be for the whole community, not a party house. I’ve had a knitting club contact me, like just a place to go and hang out for a day. People can contact us through our website, and we can work it out. We’re the only licensed vacation rental in town.” “As for the yoga studio, as we get back in the swing of things, we would love to just keep adding classes and growing.
