Icy ANDAwe-inspiring Ice Castles is a frozen celebration of the season’s beauty n the grounds of Geneva National near by Sandra the shore of Lake Como in Walworth Landen Machaj County, an awe-inspiring, icy CORRESPONDENT structure is growing larger each day. Depending on the weather, this structure may grow to 20 feet in height, with walls up to 10 feet thick and cover an area up to an acre. The structure’s ice is estimated to weigh approximately 25 million pounds. This structure known as Ice Castles is a special place where visitors will feel themselves transported into a frozen fairy tale wonderland. They will have a chance to meander along snowcovered paths eyeing the beauty of the walls and riding down slides that have been built into the attraction. A steeper and longer slide for those over 42 inches tall and shorter slides for the younger children generate sounds of laughter from the area. In addition to the slides there are a variety of frozen thrones and fountains inside the ice castle. Visitors can stop to imagine the feeling of overlooking their own ice kingdom. Imagine making your way through the tunnels that have been cut through the ice walls by artisans using chain saws. This ice structure is created exclusively from hundreds of thousands handmade

icicles created by ice artisans, then painstakingly placed by them to form the walls that will become Ice Castles. Unlike some ice structures that are made with a wood under the ice or large blocks of ice as the base, these are made only of handcrafted icicles. “The ice artisans use their knowledge of
geometry, physics, and chemistry to create the icicles to place them correctly to build the walls that will support the ice castle,” said Wally Bullard, events manager for Ice Castles. “It is a craft and an art and a process that is never finished.” The ice artisans put the created icicles in place, and then spray them with water

How to get your tickets for Ice Castles Tickets for Ice Castles are available online at the Ice Castles website www.icecastles.com. Officials with Ice Castles recommend tickets be purchased in advance to assure entry to the attraction at the time of choice. Tickets are issued with a half-hour time block for entry into the structure. Once inside visitors may remain as long as they wish to fully enjoy the beauty of the castle. Most visitors spend a minimum of a half hour enjoying the attraction but many spend considerably more time. Tickets may also be purchased onsite for the same day if any are still available. Taking a chance on being able to purchase a ticket onsite may result in disappointment or may require a long wait for an available entrance time, officials warn. Advance online tickets for weekdays (Monday through Thursday) are priced at $18.99 for those 12 years of age and older and $12.99 for those ages 4 to 11 years. Weekend admission (Friday through Sunday) costs $22.99 for adults and $18.99 for children. Tickets purchased onsite, if available, will cost more and may not include a designated entry time or even a guarantee that you will be admitted on that day. “Tickets may be exchanged for another day or time due to illness or other difficulty as long as it is done before the time slot of the ticket, said Wally Bullard, events manager for Ice Castles. “A minimal (change) fee of $10 for the entire group of tickets will be charged.”

Each day an additional 5,000 to 12,000 icicles are added to the ice castle to replace those that have melted due to the weather. “The building of the ice castle takes about four to five weeks if the weather cooperates,” added Bullard. “Longer than that if there are warm spells.” On some days with icicles melting, the artisans are simply rebuilding what was built the day before and not adding any height to the castle. The season for the ice castle may extend from November through the middle of March. This year the ice castle was slated to open in mid January and will remain open into March as long as the weather cooperates. Because each of the icicles is unique, varying in length and width, the attraction varies in height and in some areas includes narrow pathways. Standing inside the ice castle, especially in the very tall areas, the irregular ice shapes seem to go on forever before opening into the sky. When looking up, surrounded by the tall walls, the beauty of the blue sky above seems very far away.

The white spires project a bluish hue adding to the beauty of the attraction. At night Ice Castles can be seen with a vast array of colors as the multi colored LED lights that have been imbedded in the ice are turned on. A visit to the Ice Castle at night is a very different experience from a daytime visit as the ice takes on a very different look with the colored lights shining through. Music is piped through the

ice castle in coordination with the blinking lights. Some visitors will purchase both a daytime ticket and a night ticket for a complete look at the attraction. It is a beautiful sight only seen for a few weeks in winter. There are no age limitations for entry into Ice Castles. However, strollers cannot be accommodated on the trails because the wheels tend to get stuck. They do suggest the use of a small sled if children are unable to walk the full attraction. Pets are not allowed by Ice Castles. Service dogs must have proof of the animal’s certification for it to accompany the guest.
A father’s creation
Ice Castles was originally created by Brent Christensen of Alpine, Utah. As the
father of six children, he was looking for a way to encourage his children to spend more time outdoors on cold, snowy Utah winter days. He built an ice cave in his front yard in 2009, and it became the favorite place to play not only for his children but also for his neighbors’ and friends’ children. “The first ice cave was built over a wooden frame,” said Bullard. “At the end of the winter, he discovered that the wood was completely rotted from the moisture, so he devised the icicle construction technique which allowed the building of the ice castles without a wooden frame.” In 2011 Christensen, teamed with Ryan Davis to form Ice Castles. Now, 10 years later, there are four locations that bring Ice Castles to life each year – Colorado, New Hampshire, Utah, and Lake Geneva.
Just as the pandemic has made changes to every sector of life, Ice Castles has also made changes to protect visitors from the COVID-19. “We limit the number of visitors in the ice castle at any given time. We encourage social distancing both at the ticket booth and in the ice castle,” Bullard said. “We have also initiated an additional sanitation plan to protect visitors, and masks are worn in the ice castle.” They have also made the tunnels one way to accommodate social distancing. For many visitors, Ice Castles has become a favorite winter outdoor activity for families. This year a professional photographer will be on site for those who wish to purchase a memento of their visit.

Not even a pandemic. Jillian Niemann, owner of The Treasury, a new event venue in a former bank building in Delavan described as having historic charm and sophisticated elegance, is realizing her dream. “Today was a dream come true,” Niemann wrote on The Treasury Facebook page in November as the venue was being readied for opening. “Six years ago my husband and I had a dream to have a venue of our own one day. This morning when I picked up my first makeup brush ready to start on the first model, I completely broke down into tears thinking about the first time we walked into that old basement vault… at the time it was dusty, cobwebs, wood – but I could see that it would be beautiful.” Although COVID has caused some delays – it was expected to open earlier in 2020 – Niemann said she’s tried to see the positives in it. “So far all of our big weddings and events have chosen to move to 2021. This extra time has allowed us to not rush deadlines and continue to make well-thought-out decisions on construction finishes and décor,” she said. Niemann, a makeup, hair and wardrobe stylist previously specializing in celebrity clientele, television, live events, commercial work and country music, since relocating to the area has focused on traveling the state and country doing bridal styling. Her husband, Ryan, a general contractor and third generation carpenter who does mostly residential custom work, took on the couple’s dream to turn the old Wisconsin State Bank into an event space. Niemann said they consider themselves lucky to have ordered what they needed for construction materials before shipping issues decreased supply or there was a slow down because of lack of workforce.

Working amidst COVID
“One of the big positives of the COVID shutdowns and regulations has been how Walworth County has chosen to address public health issues. Allowing private parties to go on with minimal capacity restrictions or mask enforcement has brought a ton of brides Jillian Niemann from surrounding states and highly regulated counties – such as Dane and Milwaukee – and we are seeing a big shift in brides fully re-planning their weddings here in Walworth County,” Niemann said. She said people want to be safe but they also want to have a wedding day with more than 10 people in attendance. They also want to move on with their lives in a positive direction without letting COVID-19 drown their wedding dreams, but as safe as possible. “Especially for brides in their late 20s, 30s and 40s, many have plans of starting a family and just don’t want to wait another year or two – especially given the stress of the unknown in planning as there is a good chance that even next year many places will still have restrictions in effect,” Niemann said. Another positive takeaway from COVID, she said, has been the focus on more intimate gatherings – quality over quantity – and the need for a private space where people aren’t co-mingling guests with the general public. “I have seen a shift that people are wanting to put more into planning events since there are less people attending and more is being invested in the small details such as decor, great food

and entertainment,” she said. “Because so many events are being cancelled, people are putting a higher value on creating an extra special event for their loved ones and guests.

Niemann said another great aspect of The Treasury is it’s not too large, so smaller groups – of even 10 or fewer people – will not feel overwhelmed in the space. “You could set up a beautiful table in the center of the room under the chandeliers, even add a small dance floor as ours is customizable, layout some of our beautiful gold and marble cocktail tables, close off the balcony French doors to close in the space and dim the lights down low to create a very intimate and welcoming mood,” she said. Niemann said they have also installed a high-quality sound system so they can provide the background music of a client’s choice from a self-designed playlist or various music platforms. To top it off, she said, they enjoy working with local event stylists such as Simply Detailed and Parker Drive, who are “just the best at what they do and can help people, regardless of event type or size, to make it as magical and memorable as possible.” Full day bookings include use of the entire event space including the basement, vaults, ballroom, mezzanine and balcony. Full-day rentals also include on-site private security, table linens, general event staff and the venue coordinator.
While it’s obvious the space would be ideal for a wedding, Niemann said it’s also suitable for many other events such as charity galas, awards banquets, private meetings and photo shoot rentals.
Bright, airy space
The 5,100-square foot, former Wisconsin State Bank was built in 1909 and is adorned with four vaults. The goal was to create a bright and airy feel and not be overly moody or industrial. It features white floors, white wainscoting for character and detail, two large, glass chandeliers in the ballroom and many other accents. Outside are new, metal lanterns, which give the entire space an upscale, modern appeal yet keep the character of the era in mind, according to Niemann. Other outdoor upgrades include planter boxes with some lighting shining on limestone columns and a gold lettered sign boasting “The Treasury.” During the renovation, a variety of items were discovered. “We’ve uncovered old perfume bottles, vintage cleaning tins, some coins, bank deposit slips dating back to the 30s, old liquor and glass juice bottles, and some 50-cent pieces molded into old terrazzo flooring demo-ed,” she said. “We also found a piece of scrap wood used as a walkway plank in the ceiling that has ‘Wisconsin State Bank, Delavan, WI’ handwritten on it from original construction,” she said. In a brochure about The Treasury, the Niemanns express appreciation for the warm welcome by the Delavan community. “We could not be happier to be a part of the downtown. Everyone has been so welcoming, kind and supportive of our vision and we are forever grateful for that,” they said. In the early 1800s, wedding dresses were far different from those that are commonly seen on today’s brides. While the wealthy class and royalty wore gowns of the richest material, the less monied brides would be married in their best dress, the one usually

reserved for Sunday church. The color of the dress was not important. The wealthy wore a variety of bold colors made of velvet or silk, fashoined in the popular styles of the day. In these higher classes, it was expected that the bride would dress in a manner to reflect on the wealth of her family. Marriages were often arranged by families to increase the families’ wealth and land. Among royalty, marriages were arranged as alliances between countries. Marriages strictly for love were rare. Other than Philippa of England in 1406 and Mary Queen of Scots when she married her first husband Francis the Dauphin of France in 1559, there no other instances of royalty wearing white at their weddings until
1840. Then Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe- Coburg and wore a white silk gown trimmed with orange blossoms and a veil of Honiton lace. Many brides of the era followed the queen’s choice and it was not long before white became the color of choice for brides. By the 1850s, the white bridal gown became the popular gown. They were created out of embroidered silk, and lace often with floral detailing much like the gown of Queen Victoria. The look was completed with a long lacy veil. wear white extended to the bridesmaids of the wedding party. They, too, would wear a white gown and veil although not as elaborate as the bride. This trend did not continue for long and the bridesmaids began to again wear other colors.
Brides in the U.S.
In the United States the wealthy followed the trends of Europe in terms of fashion although they were often a year or two behind the current trends waiting for word and cloth to arrive on the ships that crossed the ocean. In the early 1800s, bridal dresses were of various colors including black. The Geneva Lake Museum received a black silk wedding gown from Mary Kaye Merwin which dated back to 1830. The dress was worn by Julia Kaye, believed to be one of the daughter’s of Arthur Kaye when she married James Reek. Arthur Kaye owned Kaye’s Park on Geneva Lake, a summer resort in the 1800s. At this same time the immigrants from Europe who were making the Midwest their home were busy clearing land and raising crops and were often short of cash. These brides would wear their Sunday dress for their wedding. If there were funds and fabric available to purchase, a new dress would be made for the wedding.
Styles follow trends
The styles of bridal dresses followed the styles of the fashion industry of the
time. By 1880 the Victorian era had taken over women’s fashions and bridal dresses reflected the style. High necklines, a fitted bodice with long sleeves and a full feminine skirt which reached to the ankles prevailed. Dainty white gloves were worn so that even the hands were covered. The styles of wedding dresses did not change much until the roaring 1920s. Waistlines dropped and hemlines were raised and many wedding dresses followed this style. Elaborate headpieces from diamond (real or fake) tiaras and delicate hairpins were worn with long cathedral veils. Cloche-style headpieces, elaborately decorated with lace or jewels were also seen on many brides. The Roaring ’20s style went out as quickly as it roared in with a return to floor length bridal gowns, with long sleeves, and a small train but always in white. The dresses were often created of satin and designed with appliqued lace or embroidery for the fashionable bride of the late 1930s and early 1940s. With World War II making its way across Europe, the 1940s brought additional changes in wedding celebrations. As America entered the war, life in the U.S. changed. While many weddings were planned in advance, they often had to be changed due to the grooms being deployed. With much uncertainty in their lives, couples married on short notice leaving no time to order a bridal dress. They returned to the old days when
brides just wore their best outfit and the days of large receptions were limited due to the austerity of war time including rationing of food items. Movie stars who were known for their elaborate gowns and jewels also began to have quick weddings wearing nontraditional bridal gowns. Stars of the 1940s Ava Gardner and Mickey Rooney were one such couple who married in non-traditional clothing. Ava wore a gray suit with black veil. To brighten the look she wore a white corsage. After the war, bridal gowns returned to the more feminine look with wedding gowns worn by Queen Elizabeth, and Jackie Kennedy providing a glamorous, feminine look with sleek, fitted bodices and full skirts with sweetheart or scoop necks. Many remember the look of the 1980s identified by the bridal dress of Princess Diana for her marriage to Prince Charles. With huge puffy sleeves and made of taffeta, it gave her the look of being swallowed by the gown. By the end of the 20th century luxurious stylings with full skirts and lace were seen at many weddings. • CONTINUED ON PAGE 31

In their place restaurants began to look for tents to use for outdoor seating, especially as indoor seating was limited or in some areas closed completely. With the weather turning cooler the use of tents to serve meals allowed their outdoor seating to continue into the fall and in some cases through the milder winter. For those who have not held an event in a tent, there are many decisions that must be made. New customers are often at a loss as to where to begin and what size tent is needed. “Many people who have not worked with tents tend not to be able to visualize exactly what the tent will look like when it is ready for the event,” said Jenni Spencer, office manager for AAA Tent Masters and Party Rentals, who has had over 10 years’ experience planning tent events, including her own wedding. “They may not even be able to visualize the size of tent needed for the size of their event. They are also not aware of how much space is needed to set up the tent.” Most of the tents are used in backyards for family events so it is necessary to be certain that there is a large enough flat surface for the tent. There must be ample room to stake the tents to make them safe. “We also provide a site inspection to be certain that the space is appropriate for the size tent ordered,” added Spencer.
Planning the day
Spencer suggests that people bring as much information about their event as possible – starting with budget, number of guests, type of food, buffet or plated dinner, and music. Will there be a need for a dance floor or a gift table? “We suggest that you start with one of our wedding packages,” said Spencer. “Once you pick a package you can upgrade or add additional items to the packages to make your wedding special for you. There are wedding packages that are appropriate for weddings of any size.” The tents vary in size and setup capacity from the 30-by-50-foot frame tent, which can be set up to serve 72 guests, to the 80-by-120 pole tent, which will accommodate 600 guests. The basic wedding package includes the appropriately sized tent, tables for guests to sit and eat, a head table, buffet table, gift table and one for the DJ. A portable bar, a separate cake table and a dance floor are also included. The chairs are also included in the bridal package, but couples

What about lighting?
“Lighting in tents can be done in various ways. Most popular now is the bistro style lights,” said Spencer. “These string lights can be arranged in a variety of ways to give a special look to the tent.” Covering the support poles with cloth intertwined with small ice lights also adds to the ambience of the space. Up lights, that is lights which stream upward against the walls to provide a soft look, may be the very subtle look you are looking to attain. Tents can also be lighted using traditional brass or crystal chandeliers. According to Spencer, the chandeliers are not as popular these days as the lighter bistro style lights. “We do provide a CAD-generated floor plan which gives the bridal couple a look at how the tent will be set up,” added Spencer. “Unless they have worked with a tent before, most of those coming to rent one have difficulty visualizing where everything needs to be set up and how it will look when finished.” Anytime a tent is being used for an event, portable bathrooms need to be considered. AAA Tent Masters can provide rental of these units from simple, single units to higher end flushable toilets with running water sinks.

According to Eaton, only time will tell how the next year or so will look. “We are only 4-½ months from the time when the large festivals would normally begin so we will know shortly what will happen with them this year. I expect a slow cautious return to the normal of days past. Perhaps it will take until 2022 for a more
complete return. The comforts of home
We think of tent activities as summer events and while that is mostly true, the tents can also be used in the cooler weather of spring and fall and perhaps even winter if the temperature doesn’t drop too low. “There are a variety of heating methods that AAA Tent Masters and Party Rentals can provide to take the chill out of the tent for a comfortable event,” Spencer said. There are a several ways to provide a comfortable indoor temperature for your event. Large forced-air propane heaters will heat any size tent efficiently and comfortably. For other spaces, smaller propane heaters will do the job. On the other side, during the hot days of summer, large pedestal fans can be used to circulate the air or a smaller portable air conditioning unit may be all that is needed. For a large tent a more extensive air conditioning unit can be arranged. As with any wedding activity, AAA Tent Masters recommends reserving the tent and specialty items needed a minimum of six months in advance to be certain your choices are available.

CORRESPONDENT The Burlington resident turned 80 years old on Dec. 31, and he has no plans to act his age and stop running, biking and skiing. His finished basement is littered with bib numbers from decades of competing in the American Birkebeiner, an acclaimed cross country ski race, along with trophies, skis and ribbons. Down the hall is Don’s “man cave,” where the walls are covered with more bib numbers and awards, and there are literally bowls filled with ribbons from all of the years of competition. Howell says he currently skies three times a week, and he owns several heavy-duty mountain bikes for warmer weather. For Howell age is a state of mind and staying active helps his bones and makes him feel great. “I skied about 55 days last year, and I’ve already skied five days this year up at Lapham Peak,” Howell said. “I feel so good after I ski. I’m not as fast, but I’m still OK. I’m an inspiration for other skiers. They come all around for the Birkebeiner. I’ve done 32 of them, the full Birkie, which is 31 miles, up and down.” Howell intends on competing in the Birkie again in late February, and he is coming off the best finish for any competitor over the age of 65 in the recent Turkey Trot Thanksgiving Day run in Burlington. Howell won the 75+ age group several years ago, and he is planning on winning the 80-84 age group this year. Also, Howell will race in his 32nd Chequamegon Fat Tire bicycle challenge after having won his age class at 70 and 75. To train for these events, Howell skies nine miles a day, three or four times a week. He started cross country skiing at the age of 41. It’s not just walking on skies, it’s more like skating, Howell says, and speed is the goal. Howell says the younger guys in the skiing community are inspired that he’s still doing it at age 80. Guys in their early 50s see him, and they believe they will be doing it forever. “There’s a lot of good skiers that can’t ski anymore,” Howell said. “Either they died, or they quit. If you stop doing this, you can easily quit.” “I run, I bike a lot, I’m a better biker than I am a skier, I won a national mountain biking race at 70 and 75. My principle is I want to stay in the pleasure zone. When I was young, I would push as hard as I could.” “I want to stay vertical, and I want to enjoy it.”

At his age, Howell knows of the danger spots, and he isn’t afraid to take it easy. He wants to be comfortable and not get hurt. He has lost a tooth and separated a shoulder while competing. The pandemic has prevented him from doing as many races in 2020. But he still enjoyed the Turkey Trot, something he’s done all 10 years. “I’ve slowed down,” Howell said of the Trot. “When I was 69, I ran an 8-and-ahalf minute mile pace. Now, I’m running

11 minutes, and I’m enjoying it more. I finished in the middle. I don’t like to finish last.” Mostly, Howell has avoided major injury. But one time, he crashed hard on his bike eight years ago while traveling as fast as 35 miles per hour. “I could see the finish line, and guys were saying I had a separated shoulder,” Howell said. “And I hurt my ribs. This is common to a lot of bikers.” Howell also paddled his kayak nearly 50 days this year. He goes far up north and is joined by friends. “You don’t hear anything about Trump or what’s going on or anything. You can’t get a cell phone signal. I love doing that with my friends,” Howell added. Howell also plays tennis.
Athletic beginnings The Iowa native retired at age 67 as a plant manager at a factory in Elkhorn. He moved to Burlington in 1974 after
taking a job in Delavan. He graduated with an MBA from Iowa State University. When he’s not staying active, Howell is around the local sports scene, as he enjoys attending Burlington High School games. The love of sports started in high school, when he didn’t lose a game on the pitching mound. “When I was young, I was scouted by the Chicago Cubs because I was undefeated in high school,” Howell said. “My first game in college was a no-hitter. It was the 1960s, and I threw wicked stuff. They asked me if I ever threw a fastball. Why should I?” Howell always strived to be the best in any sport he tackled. He is meticulous with his records, as he keeps a log for how far he travels each day. Also, he frequents the Aurora Wellness Center, where he plays pickup basketball. Howell says you have to have stress on your bones, or you can break something. That’s part of the reason why he pushes himself at age 80. “You can be prone to broken bones if
you don’t exercise your bones,” Howell said. “After I skied Monday, I went out and hiked because I felt so good.” “Exercise builds up your immune system, too.” Howell said he’s cut down on his sugars and he’s avoided any major illness. “My cholesterol is good, I go to sleep at 10:30 and wake up at 7,” he said. “Every other day, I eat whole wheat blueberry pancakes with lots of blueberries. Also, I’ll eat cereal with blueberries. I like to snack on dry roasted peanuts. I try not to eat after 7 p.m., and anything is either whole wheat or nutritious, not fat.” Howell says he weighs a healthy 167 pounds. He says 40 years ago, he weighed 225 pounds, and his daughter noticed how he was out of shape playing basketball. “I was feeling a little sluggish, and that’s when I decided to change,” Howell said.
Family first Howell has been married to LaVonne for 56 years. They met at Iowa State. “My wife must’ve been desperate,” Howell joked. “I met her during the last week, when I didn’t have any finals left, and I was just having a good time. I met her in June, and we got married in December.” Don and LaVonne have a daughter, Becky, 51, who lives in Gurnee, Ill. Also, a son, Brian, 53, has done Birkies with dad. “My son has done the Fat Tire race with me and beat me,” Don said. Don has five grandchildren, and he is proud to be a grandpa. He was gone on runs and races with the kids. The family did a Zoom hangout for Thanksgiving. For Christmas, Becky came home on Christmas Eve, and everyone wore masks. LaVonne is now two years cancer-free after surviving breast cancer, which entailed three surgeries. “She had a PET scan to tell her she was completely free, so we’re kind of blessed,” Howell added. For now and in the future, Don isn’t going to stop. He wants to keep enjoying himself, and it isn’t necessarily about winning anymore. “It’s an addiction, and I love it,” Don said about his love of athletic activity. “I want to enjoy it. I’m not trying to beat anybody. It’s my passion, and I feel so good. I feel great. If you’re going to exercise, do something that you love to do.”

Snow sculpting & so much more Winterfest offers seasonal fun in the heart of Lake Geneva While the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championships will take center stage at Lake Geneva’s 26th annual Winterfest Feb. 3-7, there are plenty of other events to help visitors celebrate the season. As the only national snow sculpting championship in the United States, Winterfest will welcome some of the most talented and award-winning sculpting teams from across the country to again highlight the annual festival Visitors are invited to witness the teams at work during the 72-hour ’round-theclock competition where their artistry is paramount in creating larger-than-life snow sculptures, according to Visit Lake Geneva. The sculpting begins Feb. 3 and the majority of the accompanying events are Feb. 5, 6 and 7. In addition to the snow sculpting, visitors can enjoy a downtown ice sculpture tour and s’mores and bonfires on the beach. Downtown Lake Geneva taverns, restaurants and shops will offer special promotions to coincide with the festival. Go to visitlakegeneva.com and search for Winterfest for additional information.

COCOA CRAWL
The Cocoa Crawl is a free, familyfriendly event set for Friday, Feb. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitors are invited to stroll, shop and sample a variety of hot cocoa and treats at participating establishments. Registration is required for this event. To participate, go to www.eventbrite.com and search for Lake Geneva Cocoa Crawl. Once registered, participants will receive an email containing a downloadable map and a list of participating businesses and what they are serving. Participants are invited to visit as many of the participating businesses as they desire. Participating merchants will have a Cocoa Crawl welcome sign in their windows. Those who stop at the Lake Geneva Visitor Information Center, 201 Wrigley Drive, between 4 and 6 p.m. to vote for their favorite chocolate treat will receive a free goody bag.
BONFIRES ON THE BEACH
Festivalgoers are invited to gather around one of several fire pits on Riviera Beach between 5 and 9 p.m. on Feb. 5 and 6 for an evening under the stars. Participants will have a chance to enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate and other refreshments for purchase. Proceeds will benefit Walworth County Chambers of Commerce. Entry to the beach will be from Riviera Plaza near the snow sculptures.
ICE SCULPTURE TOUR
Downtown Lake Geneva’s second annual Ice Sculpture Walk is set for Feb. 5-7. Participants will find dozens of artfully crafted ice sculptures adorning the entrances to businesses throughout the downtown district. The ice sculptures will be installed the morning of Feb. 5 and remain on display as long as the cold weather permits.
