Winners will be announced the week of Dec. 20.

Lighting – Experience the small town comfort and joy of the holiday season in Elkhorn on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. as the community ignites the town’s Christmas spirit at the Tree Lighting while Santa Claus and a special guest helper wave a wand to magically light the tree in the downtown square.

Lake Geneva Electric Christmas Parade – The 46th annual parade: “Christmas Classics: Movies, Music and Stories” will step off in downtown Lake Geneva at 5 p.m. The annual event is a joyful celebration of the season in colorful, lightfilled units that travel down Broad and Main Streets.

Elkhorn’s Christmas Card Town Parade, 1:30 p.m. – Bundle up the family and grab a spot downtown to watch the annual Christmas Card Town Parade. Features decorated Christmas floats, novelty acts, music, animals, and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

residents to participate yet still remain safe. The Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce working with the Walworth Community Food Pantry and the United Way of Walworth County put together an exciting community event to bring joy and the holiday spirit to Elkhorn. They created Let It Glow at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, a drive-thru a holiday light display complete with Santa that was embraced by the community. “It was a one-day event meant to bring joy to the community,” said Kate Abbe, Partner Engagement in Marketing for the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce. “Last year, because of COVID, we were unable to hold our usual visit with Santa at the library. With the help of the business community we were able to pull this event off. There were so many automobiles filled with families waiting to ride through the exhibit that many had to wait too long.” This year Let It Glow will be expanded to three days and held Dec. 3-5. There will be an expanded light display, which will once again be put up by the Chamber of Commerce and community members. On Friday, Dec. 3, there will be a drivethru where families can enjoy the whimsical light display, and a ride down Balsam Drive to view the lighted Christmas trees. The trees are decorated by local business and volunteers. Santa will also make an appearance. The hours are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, the drive-thru will be held between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. On Sunday Dec. 5, visitors can walk through the display and even visit with Santa in the log cabin. A goody bag will be distributed to the first 500 visitors. There is no charge to enjoy this community event but donations are appreciated. The Walworth County Fairgrounds are at 422 E. Court St., Elkhorn.
Christmas in the Country
For 27 years, the Grand Geneva Resort has put on a spectacular light celebration. Beginning Monday Nov. 22, the 2 million lights that shine on the Grand Geneva property will be lit daily through Dec. 30. The annual light festival began with the lighting of the Christmas tree followed by a fireworks display. Along Grand Geneva Way the light display celebrates the 12 days of Christmas. Each year visitors have a choice of driving the route to enjoy the lights or to take the trolley from the front of the Grand Geneva Resort. This year, however, the trolley option is only offered to registered guests staying on the property because of COVID-19. The trolleys leave hourly at 5, 6, 7, and 8 p.m. Reservations are required and can be booked

by calling 262-248-8811. There is no charge for the trolley. The trolley is heated and enclosed for visitors’ comfort. Local residents and visitors are free to drive from Highway 50 up Grand Geneva Way and enjoy the illuminations. In addition, the Gingerbread walk will be open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily for residents of the resort and from Sunday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for residents of the community. People are welcome to enjoy the unique and artistic gingerbread homes completed by the community and entered into a competition. Grand Geneva Resort is at 70236 Grand Geneva Way, Lake Geneva. The Santa Cruise
Imagine taking a cruise on Geneva Lake during the holiday season on a boat decorated with Christmas wreaths and holiday lights. A cruise that is focused on children and holiday spirit. Children are sure to be amazed and excited especially when the boat passes Santa’s Hideaway, Santa himself reads the names of all the children who have been good and are on the nice list. The cruise, which leaves from Pier 290 in Williams Bay, is 40 minutes long and meanders along a lakeshore decorated with Christmas scenes colorfully illuminated with holiday lights. Each scene is unique – from Santa to a colorful dolphin flipping its tail. Prior to boarding, participants will walk through a wonderland of decorated trees. These trees are decorated in honor of the Santa Cause charities. These are local charities that benefit from monies raised by the Santa Cause Charities. This indoor wonderland consists of trees decorated to appeal to all ages. There is a cash

bar with beverages and snacks for adults and children. Tickets can be purchased online at santacruiselakegeneva.com. Cruises are offered from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $9 for children older than 3. There is also an adult-only cruise with live music on Saturday night at 9 p.m. Tickets are $28 for adults and $26 for seniors (65+). The Santa Cruise leaves from Gage Marine Pier 290, 1 Liechty Drive, Williams Bay.

East Troy Lights
A special holiday light show will beam on the East Troy Square when their second annual light show begins on Dec. 4 and continues to light up the square through Dec. 31. The entire square will sparkle with the interactive program of lights shining in synch with the playing of favorite Christmas Carols while one walks through the square. HOLIDAY PARADES In addition to light shows holiday parades also bring out the Christmas. Here are a few of the parades to consider attending to foster that holiday spirit:

The Burlington Christmas Parade will step off Friday, Dec. 3, at 6:50 p.m. This year will be the 39th annual parade and will be themed “Frozen Fantasy Christmas.” The parade will wind down Pine Street in downtown Burlington. The Christmas tree lighting will occur in Wehmhoff Square Park after the parade. Door County Sled Dogs will be in the park along with carolers, cookies, and music for all to enjoy. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in the chalet to listen to the children’s wish lists.
On Dec. 4 the city of Lake Geneva will host its 46th annual “electric” parade. This year’s theme will be “Christmas Classics, Movies, Music and Stories” and the lighted floats will reflect the theme. The parade will begin at 5 p.m. at the corner of Williams and

Since 1972, the East Troy Electric Railroad has had the job of delivering Santa to the Village of East Troy. This year, on Dec. 4, at 5:30 pm, the special Santa train will leave from the Elegant Farmer and proceed nonstop to East Troy with an expected arrival at 6:30. For those who want to see the train as it travels down the track, they recommend viewing Santa in the train from inside their own heated vehicle along County Road ES.

Area tree farms assist with a holiday tradition One of the most iconic and enduring symbols of the holiday season is the Christmas tree. For many people, picking out the perfect tree is a daylong event that is rooted in tradition and family fun. The Christmas tree as we know it began to appear in Germany in the 1500s. The early German trees were decorated with paper roses, apples, candies, nuts and accented with strips of red paper. Then candles were added to light the tree. Today’s trees take on many shapes, sizes, colors and themes with different arrays of lights and ornaments that are limited only by the imagination. Keeping your tree fresh What
The key to maintaining your live Christmas tree throughout the holiday season is to give it the proper care from the time it is purchased until the tree is removed from your home. Maintaining a high moisture l evel in the tree is the single most important factor in reducing needle loss and keeping the tree fresh. This is accomplished primarily through the use of waterholding stands and maintaining the water level in the stand above the base of the tree. Every year there are many articles written concerning the handling and care of Christmas trees. Unfortunately, they often contain erroneous information. The following research-based guidelines will help you to maintain the freshness and aroma of your live Christmas tree this holiday season. • Use a tree stand with an adequate water-holding capacity. A tree stand should have a water basin that provides 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. A cut tree will absorb a surprising amount of water, particularly during the first week, so replenish the water daily. • The tree stand should fit your tree. Avoid whittling down the sides of the trunk to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. • If the tree is to be stored more than a couple days before display, it is advisable to place its trunk in water and store it in a cool, shaded and protected area such as an unheated garage. • If it has been longer than 12 hours since harvest, the trunk should be recut to improve water uptake. • Cutting off a disk of wood about ¼-inch thick from the base of the trunk is all that is necessary before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also may reduce the amount of water available to the tree. • Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat. tree suits you? Wisconsin Christmas tree farmers can grow a variety of Christmas trees. Balsam fir, spruce and white pine are native to the state and were originally harvested from the natural wild forest. The following list, provided by the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association, provides short descriptions of trees that may be available in Wisconsin, either at retail lots or choose and cut farms.
BALSAM FIR: These needles are ¾ to 1½ in. in length and last a very long time. This tree has a darkgreen appearance and retains its pleasing fragrance throughout the Christmas season. temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. • The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake. • Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. • Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake. • Adding water-holding gels to the stand is not beneficial and they can reduce the amount of water in the stand that is available to the tree. • Do not use additives in the water, including floral preservatives, commercial tree preservatives, molasses, sugar, bleach, soft drinks, aspirin, honey, and other concoctions. • Displaying trees in water with proper care is much more effective in reducing fire hazards than spraying trees with flame retardants. Some flame retardants can damage needles and actually increase the rate of moisture loss from trees. • Monitor your tree for dryness. Run your fingers across the needles to determine if they are dry and brittle. If the needles break easily or fall off in your hand, the tree is dry and should be remove from the house. A well-cared-for tree should normally remain fresh at least three to four weeks before drying to an unacceptable level. This article was written by Ricky M. FRASER FIR: The Fraser fir branches turn slightly upward. They have good form and excellent needleretention. They are dark blue-green in color and the needles have a silver underside. They have a pleasant scent, and excellent shipping characteristics as well.
WHITE PINE: The largest pine in the U.S., the white pine has soft, flexible needles and is bluish-green in color. Needles are 2½ - 5 inches long. White pines have good needle retention, but have little aroma. They aren’t recommended for heavy ornaments. WHITE SPRUCE: The white spruce is excellent
for ornaments; its short, stiff needles are ½ to ¾ in. long and have a blunt tip. They are bluish-green - green in color, but have a bad aroma when needles are crushed. They have excellent foliage color and have a good, natural shape. The needle retention is better in a white spruce than it is among other spruces.
COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE: These sharp
needles are 1 to 1 ½ in. in length. This species is bluish-gray in color. Needles have an unpleasant odor when crushed. This Christmas Tree has good symmetrical form and an attractive blue foliage. It also has good needle retention.
CONCOLOR FIR: These small, narrow needles are around 1 to 1½ in. in length and occur in rows. They have good foliage color, good needle retention, and a pleasing shape and aroma. DOUGLAS-FIR: These soft needles are dark green to blue green in color and are approximately 1 to 1 ½ in. in length. Douglas-fir needles radiate in all directions from the branch. When crushed, these needles have a sweet fragrance. They are one of the top major Christmas tree species in the U.S. and are available from some growers in Wisconsin. SCOTCH PINE: Approximately 1 in. in length, these needles don’t even fall when they’re dry, providing excellent needle retention. The color is a bright green. The most common Christmas tree in the U.S., the scotch pine has an excellent survival rate, is easy to replant, has great durability and will remain fresh throughout the holiday season.

The fragrance of Christmas in Wisconsin
When I think of Christmas, I think of by Julie Nunes decorating the Christmas tree with my sisters. CONTRIBUTOR I can remember from an early age stringing popcorn and cranberries to make garland and sorting through ornaments. The smell and touch of a real Christmas tree sparks holiday memories like running around a local Christmas tree farm to find the perfect tree. The holidays are a special time for families to celebrate the magic of the season and Wisconsin’s diverse agriculture industry. Christmas trees play an important part in Wisconsin’s agriculture industry. Wisconsin-cut Christmas trees ranked fourth in the nation for sales in 2019, totaling $23.3 million, and the 181 operations in our state sold more than 785,000 Christmas trees that same year. As of January 2020, there were approximately 7.26 million Christmas trees on Wisconsin horticulture operations to be cut and sold in future years. I am looking forward to cutting Wisconsin’s first official Christmas tree in mid-November at Hann’s Tree Farm in Oregon, Wisconsin. This family owned operation has 47 acres of trees to choose from and is located within Dane County, which is the host county for the 75th Alice in Dairyland finals. Fresh Christmas trees are offered at “choose-and-cut” tree farms across the state. These farms offer families a memorable experience that often becomes a tradition. In addition to finding and cutting down the perfect tree, many farms offer visits with Santa, wagon rides, hot apple cider, and specialty wreaths and bows. Cutting a fresh Wisconsin Christmas tree from one of Wisconsin’s tree farms allows Wisconsinites to enjoy a real tree and nature’s holiday gift. Before a Christmas tree finds a home for the holidays, producers have nurtured seedlings to grown trees ready for harvest. For each real Christmas tree harvested, two to three seedlings are planted in its place and, on average, it takes seven to 15 years to grow a Christmas tree. The most popular Christmas tree varieties grown in Wisconsin are Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, White Pine and Scotch Pine. The Balsam Fir is a short-needled tree that is native to Wisconsin and known for its dark-green color and pleasing fragrance. The Fraser Fir is often referred to as the “Cadillac of trees.” These trees retain their short needles, are blue-green in color, and have extremely strong branches that turn upward. If you prefer long-needled pines, the White Pine has soft, long needles that are blue-green color. White Pines are the largest pines in the United States. Although they have good needle retention, they are not recommended for heavy ornaments. The Scotch Pine is a full, bushy tree with long, stiff needles. These bright green trees are the most popular pines grown and purchased in Wisconsin. The Scotch Pine has an excellent survival rate, is easy to replant, and will remain fresh throughout the holiday season. While we often think of Christmas trees around the holidays, they provide many benefits to our environment all year long. These beautiful trees absorb carbon dioxide and, in return, release oxygen
into the air. In fact, one acre of Christmas trees produces the daily oxygen intake for about 18 people. Additionally, they are often grown on land that would otherwise be subject to erosion if farmed with other crops and, unlike artificial trees, are 100% biodegradable. From bees and butterflies to bears and deer, tree farms are also provide a safe habitat for wildlife, birds, and insects. Make selecting your tree a family tradition and buy a locally grown tree this season to support your local farmers and economy. Keefe looks to the future LOCAL REAL ESTATE FIRM GAINS NATIONAL PROFILE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMPASS

Keefe Real Estate, of Lake Geneva, recently announced a partnership with leading real estate technology company Compass. The partnership, according to President and CEO Tom Keefe, is not necessarily a change in direction for the local firm known for its handling of lakefront property. “We were not looking to take the company in a new direction and over the years, we have been approached by franchises, or other companies, looking to buy Keefe,” Keefe said on Friday. “When Compass called, it was different.” Keefe, who will stay on as Managing Director, said the decision comes amid an unprecedented shift in the real estate market.
The third-generation owner, in a social media message on the company Facebook page, explained the industry changes. “Like many industries, real estate has reached a moment where change has been completely unprecedented,” he said. “The tools we need to continue to serve you, our customers, with the best possible service are becoming more complex.” “It is simply becoming harder and harder for small, independent brokerages, like Keefe to keep up.” Keefe also noted viable competition is emerging from primary feeder markets, including some firms developing new business models.
Compass has national reach Compass is the nation’s largest independent brokerage with a global
headquarters in New York. Compass employs more than 23,000 agents, serving hundreds of the top cities across the country, according to a news release issued by Keefe. Last year, Compass agents sold $152 billion in residential real estate and completed more 66% more transactions than they did the year before. In Chicago, Compass ranks second for closed sales volume and market share, up from its No. 5 ranking at the end of 2020, and is home to more than 1,400 agents. “By partnering with a larger company, and one that has substantially more resources, we will be able to provide you with the same personal attention and quality of service,

Under the new Keefe Real Estate Compass brand, the company will continue to operate as a market leading real estate brokerage in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, maintaining its leadership team, agents and staff as well as existing offices, with the added resources of Compass, according to Keefe. “This is a partnership that will allow us to continue to operate all of our existing offices, and will embrace our local management and staff to remain so that we can continue to support our agents and clients,” Keefe said on Friday. “This partnership is full of opportunity and I will be staying on as managing director to lead the team.” Keefe, a third generation owner, noted he plans on maintaining the same mission his grandfather had when he founded the company in 1943. Dreams do come true Area woman opens bookstore in Waterford by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
For Kelly Klein, owning a bookstore has been a lifelong dream and when the opportunity arose a couple of months ago to do so, she jumped at it. “I’ve wanted to open a bookstore since I was a little girl,” Klein said. “I’ve always had a passion for reading and books. My mom and I went to bookstores all the time. It’s a huge passion of mine, something I’ve dreamed about doing.” While the idea of owning a bookstore may have been lurking in the back corner of her mind for decades, even Klein couldn’t have predicted how quickly that dream would become reality. “When this space became available, we just decided to do it,” Klein said. “But it’s been crazy, we started on Oct. 1. We’ve only been in the space about six weeks and we’re opening (Nov. 19)!” With help of her husband, Steve Klein, and her sister, Wendy Harmon, along with other friends and family members, Klein was able to make her dream come true. “We have done 100% of the renovations ourselves,” she said. room, put in new flooring, walls, window coverings … it’s been a lot of work and my husband has been amazing.” Klein said that beyond fulfilling her dream of owning a bookstore, she wanted to bring something special to the community she calls home. Kelly has lived in the Waterford area for 23 years and loves the community. “I’ve lived in Waterford for the last eight years and in Rochester the 15 years before that. The kids all went to the Waterford schools. I wanted to give something back to this community,” she said. Independent bookstores are few and far between in today’s world of Amazon delivery, but the ones that are around tend to have a loyal customer base. InkLink Books on the East Troy Village Square is a favorite of locals and attracts visitors from as far as Illinois on a regular basis, according to the owner, Kayleen Rhorer. In fact, Klein said she was a frequent customer at InkLink and the support shown by the independent bookstore community helped her open her own store. “It’s incredible,” Klein said. “I’ve found the whole independent bookstore community so welcoming and supportive of each other. It’s a really great group of people who
share this passion and are keeping independent bookstores alive and well. They’ve been answering my questions, offering advice and sharing things that have really helped. It’s really a great community to be a part of.” Reads by the River was set to officially open on Nov. 19, to coincide with Waterford’s Christmas in the Village celebration. “Our plan was to open the following weekend for Small Business Saturday, but I was reminded about Christmas in the Village and great it would be if we were open for that, so the timeline got moved up,” Klein said with a laugh. “We’re ready and we’ve got something for everyone,” she continued. “Games, puzzles, gifts – literary-themed ones – and other fun things I’ve found along the way. And, of course, books. Fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, coffee table books, kids’ books … lots of books.” Reads by the River is at 102 E. Main St. in downtown Waterford. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday until Christmas. Visit Lake Geneva collects winter clothes during campaign Visit Lake Geneva recently announced it will serve as the local drop-off for The Big Bundle Up, an annual statewide campaign that collects new and gently used winter clothing items for donation back to the local community. This year’s recipient of the donated items is the Walworth County Food and Diaper Bank, whose mission is to provide food and supplies in time of crisis. The organization serves more than 400 families per month thanks to donations from the community and the work of their all-volunteer staff. Residents are invited to drop off new and gently used coats, sweaters, hats, mittens, gloves and other warm clothing items between now and Jan. 7, 2022, at the Lake Geneva Visitor Information Center, 201 Wrigley Drive, Lake Geneva. About The Big Bundle Up This is the 10th year for this statewide program, with nearly 200,000 clothing items collected to date by local visitor bureaus, chambers of commerce and Travel Wisconsin Welcome Centers around the state. The program was launched by Visit Lake Geneva’s President and CEO Stephanie Klett during her tenure as Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. It grew out of what Klett dubbed “Mittengate” when then-tourism director for Michigan, George Zimmermann, expressed mild dislike of a Wisconsin advertising image that used a mitten to represent Wisconsin.
Zimmermann suggested Wisconsin was co-opting Michigan’s claim as the mittenshaped state. Klett took the friendly spat with Michigan as an opportunity to bring attention to families in need of warm winter clothing (including mittens), by launching a statewide clothing drive and enlisting tourism entities around the state to serve as collection points. “The outpouring of generosity for this program year after year is proof there is so much good in this world,” Klett said. “I’m asking our Lake Geneva area residents to join us in getting in the true spirit of the season by helping our neighbors in need.”
