In awe of ice Visitors are sure to flock to the beach in downtown Lake Geneva this winter to take in the frozen wonderland that is known as an ice castle. The intricately built structure is initially made of icicles, but then it takes on it’s own character through the regular freezethaw cycles of winter. Lake Geneva’s attraction will be one of six in the world – five in the United States and one in Canada. For more on the ice castle, see the story beginning on page 6.

are not built from blocks of ice, which creates a very symmetrical structure. The icicles allow more intricate designs due to the shape and manner in which the icicles adhere to each other. The walls themselves are often as much as 10 feet thick as the icicles drip and merge into one giant block of ice. Each day new icicles are added to replace those that may have melted due to wind or warm temperatures. The additional icicles are also handmade and as many as 5,000 to 12,000 may be added each day. These additional icicles are placed as needed by the 20 to 40 ice artisans who first build then maintain the ice castle. Inside the castle, it is a winter wonderland that may be enjoyed by people of all ages. A variety of frozen thrones and fountains are positioned in the castle. Tunnels and slides are cut through the castle by the ice artisans with chain saws. For the

The ice castle is a unique building that varies in height and includes narrow pathways through towering ice formations. Standing inside the castle, especially in the very tall areas, gives the feeling of being in a frozen wonderland with intricate icicles that appear much like stalactites or stalagmites in a cave. The formations may change in appearance as they respond to sunshine or cold, reaching up toward the sky or giving the visitor the feeling that they are indeed in a cave.

All of the Ice Castles are on the shore of a natural water source. This has been done purposely so that the water that is used in the ice castle can be returned directly to the environment. Many people have questioned why the ice has a beautiful blue color. The ice has that color just as lakes and other water surfaces do because water absorbs every color of the spectrum except for the blue hue. The blue becomes more visible in the ice as the thickness of ice increases. Pets are not allowed in the ice castle. The one exception is certified service animals. Service animal owners must have proof of certification to be allowed to enter with their animals. Ice Castles asks owners to take every precaution to avoid “yellow ice� when bringing in a service animal.
Tickets needed Tickets for the Lake Geneva ice castle will be available as soon
as it is known when the ice castle will open. Visit www.icecastles. com for more information about tickets. Based on experience at other ice castles, organizers recommend that tickets be purchased in advance for visitors to be assured of entry to the ice castle on the day and near the time of choice. Tickets are issued with a half-hour time block to enter the
structure. Once inside visitors may stay as long as they wish. Most people spend at least a half hour and many spend more time. Tickets purchased online in advance are priced at $10.95 for children from 4 to 11 years of age and $15.95 for adults on weekdays. Weekend prices for tickets in advance are $14.95 for children and $18.95 for adults. Children younger than 4 are admitted free of charge. Walkup tickets can be purchased on the day of visit if they are available. Purchase of ticket on site does not guarantee admission at a particular time or even on that day. On site ticket prices are weekdays $15 for children and $20 for adults. Weekend fares on site are $20 for children and $25 for adults. This awe-inspiring winter phenomenon makes its inaugural appearance on the Geneva Lake shore as soon as the weather allows the ice artisans to build the castle. Area residents are advised to keep an eye on the shore and watch the ice castle emerge. The breathtaking works of art are ever changing, so each view of the ice castle will be different and amazing.

Christmas Trains ride again Reservations needed for the popular trip to Santa’s Workshop
The East Troy Railroad is offering its annual Christmas Trains on Saturdays and Sundays in December. Advance reservations are required at www.easttroyrr. org. Christmas Trains at the East Troy Railroad Museum begin running again on Saturdays through Dec. 16. The fun, family friendly rides take passengers from the East Troy Depot, 2002 Church St., to Santa’s Workshop at the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago and back. The rides are just shy of two hours per round-trip and include Christmas carols on the trains and hot chocolate and cookies at the Elegant Farmer, where kids can visit with Santa and have their photos taken. “Santa’s Workshop will be better than ever and kids will receive a small gift that is fitting for the occasion,” East Troy Railroad Museum President Ryan Jonas said. “The depot should also be warmer this year, since we installed new doors that will keep the wind and cold outside.” The historic railroad cars are always heated and rest rooms are available at the East Troy depot. Tickets can be purchased online anytime – this year with no convenience fees. Cost is $18.50 for adults, $16 for children age 3 to 14, and $8 for toddlers who sit on their parents lap for the train ride. Advance reservations at www. easttroyrr.org are required. Trains will depart at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 24 and 25 and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16. The East Troy Railroad Museum operates regular 14mile round trip excursions from its historic East Troy depot and museum to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago, with a stop at the popular Elegant Farmer store and deli. Celebrating 111 years of riding the rails through Southeast Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine countryside, the not-for-profit railroad is operated and managed by more than 130 volunteers committed to the preservation of historic trolleys and interurban railcars. Texas man’s ‘Heart for America’ bicycle ride travels through area by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
In an effort to help heal some of the division in the United States, a man from Texas recently wrapped up a 3-month, 4,250mile solo bicycle ride through the heartland, including Walworth County. “America is a beautiful country, filled with diverse landscapes and people. Sometimes it is difficult to see that beauty because of all the political arguing and distractions,” Kirk Gillock, 48, said prior to leaving Texas on Aug. 2. After spending 14 years in Thailand – first volunteering as an English teacher and then founding a charity and opening a school – Gillock returned home last year. “It was sad to see how much division there was. I really wanted to reconnect with my own country, go around and meet fellow Americans and spread some love,” he said in a phone interview early last week. Gillock said he had done a similar thing in Thailand of following a route that makes a heart, but it was on a motorcycle to raise money for helmets. Later, he followed another heart path and picked up trash. When he returned to the U.S., he decided to do
the same, but on a bigger scale with the timing to finish before the midterm elections. “I decided to start in Texas, where I’m from, and from there it was just creating as big of a heart as possible through the heartland,” he said. Gillock said his mother always has been supportive, “with unconditional love, but my dad was more like, ‘Why don’t you get a job?’ Eventually he understood why I wanted to do it and has been supportive. He was a marketing guy so has been helping me connect with people. They’ve both been great,” he said. Along the way, Gillock traveled nearly every type of road imaginable and cycled through several states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas. By the end of the trip, he will have traveled through 13 states. While in Wisconsin, Gillock left Madison and was en route to Chicago when there was an unexpected stop in Walworth County. “I was pulled over by a policeman in Elkhorn, a very nice guy. I had been on Highway 12 for a long time and it was a two-lane

road but then turned into a four-lane road. He stopped me and told me I couldn’t ride on the four-lane road but gave me great advice about which route to take, and it was a great ride from there into Lake Geneva,” Gillock said. Considering the number of miles traveled, he said there were only a few issues where he wasn’t able to take the route he had planned. And he said 99 percent of the drivers that passed him were friendly and considerate while he was riding. “I only ran into two or three that were a little aggressive. That was one of my big concerns – am I going to get hit by a car? – but everyone was nice for the most part,” he said.

Bright Real trees are a longstanding holiday tradition As the annual quest for the perfect Christmas tree begins, we again offer a bit of history surrounding this time-honored tradition as well as a few local options to assist in the search. The Christmas tree as we know it began to appear in Germany in the 1500s. The early German trees were decorated with paper roses, apples, candies, nuts and accented with strips of red paper. Then candles were added to light the tree. With the addition of the candles, fire became a danger to these households. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the practice of hanging the tops of Evergreen trees upside down and decorating them with fruits and nuts was popular in Austria and Germany. This has again become popular here with people hanging a smaller tree upside down to have a more avant-garde look to their decorating or for the more practical purpose of keeping small children and pets away from the tree. By the late 1800s, hand-blown glass ornaments were produced in Germany and the area of Alsace-Lorraine (a
small area on the border of Germany and France which has been part of each country over the years). Glass beads were strung together and used as garlands on the tree. These exquisite hand-blown ornaments became family treasures and were passed down from one generation to another.

Today German Christmas trees are decorated with electric lights often in the style of the candles of old. Glass ornaments are the decoration of choice along with handmade chains and ornaments made by the children of the family. A special ornament in the shape of a pickle is hidden on the tree and the child who finds it receives an extra present. In olden days a real pickle was hung. Like the early German Christmas trees, the people of France decorated the early trees with fruits, nuts, apples but also added dried cakes, pine cone dolls and colored paper shaped into flowers. Were these dried cakes the first of the

holiday fruitcakes? They began to use the glass ornaments after the 1858 drought left apples, cakes, and nuts in short supply. The glass blowers produced ornaments in the shape of the fruits that were not available. Of course candles, then electric light strings brought the tree to life. The tree was topped with a star symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem. Queen Victoria of England brought decorated trees into the palace and, of course, the fashionable people of England followed the lead of the Monarch. Victorian-decorated trees with blown glass ornaments, jeweled ornaments and crystal or glass garlands and lit by candles gave the palace and the homes a festive appearance. Victorian style trees are still popular. From Eastern Europe colorful candles were added to the trees and birds were made from eggs to decorate the tree. The Ukrainians also decorated with eggs but painted intricate, exquisite designs and gave them as gifts to friends and family to decorate their trees. In the early 1800s, the
Scandinavian countries began the practice of decorating Christmas trees. Their trees had a very different look. White lights, first candles and then electric strings of lights, lit up the tree. Swedish or Norwegian flags would be attached to ribbons and hung from the top of the tree to the bottom. Straw ornaments in the shapes of stars, angels, or intricate designs were the most popular. Tole painting on wood often on a piece of wood in the shape of a heart could also be found hanging on the tree. The people of Norway each year since 1947 have given a Norwegian Spruce to the people of London in gratitude for their support in helping to protect Norway during World War II. The tree is usually 50 feet tall and 50-60 years old. It is displayed in Trafalgar Square in London with a very impressive lighting ceremony that is still well attended after all these years.

Why buy a real tree?
In addition to bringing a distinctly Christmas fragrance to homes, real holiday trees support a sustainable industry that plants more than two trees for every tree that is cut down, according to the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association.
Here are some facts to consider from the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association. • Christmas trees are grown as a crop for you, just like pumpkins and flowers. • Christmas tree farming is sustainable: two to three trees are planted for every one that is cut. • Trees are locally grown, keeping money in the local economy. • Tree farming provides local jobs each year (planting, digging, re-planting, shearing, mowing, harvesting, delivery, sales, machine maintenance, wreath making, office personnel). • Tree farms provide green space and habitat for wildlife. These farms are maintained in an early succession forest with young trees and plenty of ground covers. This provides habitat for deer and bear, ground birds such as turkey and quail, rodents, which bring in predators such as hawks, foxes, and bobcats, and flowering plants that help feed butterflies, bees and all manner of insects.

Christmas trees have taken on new looks. Today themed trees with ornaments all of one color or one type – such as all snowmen, angels or Santas – are popular. Victorian trees are also common. For many, trees are a combination of ornaments from the past and present. We add new ones to the tree but continue to hold onto Grandma’s glass ornament from Germany, the ones we purchased while on vacation, the ornaments given to children and those special ornaments made by our children. Whatever the customs and traditions, Christmas trees are a fragrant reminder of the season.

This holiday season four local libraries have joined forces to bring folk and Americana recording artists Bettman and Halpin to the area for a one-night family concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 13. The show will be presented at the Riviera Ballroom in Lake Geneva, and will feature Bettman & Halpin’s signature bluegrass- and roots-inspired compositions, ballads with soaring vocals and heartfelt lyrics, and groovy feelgood songs. Interspersed between these songs and instrumentals, they tell stories. They have become as known for their storytelling and playful banter as well as for their songwriting and instrumental wizardry. The concert is free and open to everyone. No tickets or reservations are required. Parking is free in Lake Geneva during the winter months. Symphony uses school concert to reach out to the young by Tom Ganser hile live performances of the classics have defined the Lake CORRESPONDENT Geneva Symphony Orchestra for most of its existence, the group’s mission is more than concerts. “The Lake Geneva Symphony views its mission to extend beyond bringing live orchestral music to Walworth County,” said Rob Keefe, president of the LGSO. “We are trying to create a culture of music and the arts in our community. “This starts with our kids.” Keefe is a Lake Geneva resident and bassoonist with the orchestra. “With children selecting a musical instrument in fifth grade, the years between 10 and 13 are crucial in cementing instrumental music in a child’s life, and, through them, the rest of the family,” he said. “We have made outreach to this crucial age group a key part of our season, beginning with the family concert and including our school days performances, and our new program to provide scholarships to defray the cost of private lessons for beginning learners.”

Children are able to view and try out instruments during the “instrument petting zoo” that was part of the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra’s family concert Oct. 6 at Lake Geneva Middle School.
“Hungarian Dance No. 6” by Johannes Brahms. Anderson then asked the audience members to raise their hands if they had never heard a symphony orchestra in a live performance before. “We’re going to talk about a couple different kinds of music,” he said. “Two pieces will be of one kind of music and two pieces of other kind of music.” In describing the Brahms selection as an example of the first kind of music, Anderson said, “The music is about … just music. It doesn’t have any kind of a story going on. It’s not
about a person. “You probably developed some strong emotions. This is one of the good things that music does. It makes you feel certain ways, but there was actually no story behind the music.” Anderson introduced the four sections of the orchestra by having each section play the same few measures of the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars” by John Williams, and asking the musicians to hold up their instrument. He also described how sound is created by the different instruments, starting with how violin, viola, cello and bass musicians move a bow

across the strings to make a sound. The percussion section musicians “have sticks and they bang them on drums and sometimes they crash things together. … All kinds of things in the percussion section,” he said. The woodwind and brass musicians “blow wind through their instruments” as they “use air to make their sounds,” he said. Before performing the “Imperial March,” Anderson shared, “This (other) kind of music is about a story or an idea or a person.” Anderson introduced an excerpt from Symphony No. 3 on the organ by Camille Saint-Saëns by singing a

few notes as “Lu” and asking the audience to repeat the notes. The strings then played the same notes, adding several more complex variations and were then joined by the entire orchestra. Anderson used the exercise to demonstrate how a musical composition can be built. The Saint-Saëns, Anderson said, “is an example of the first kind of music, like the Brahms. It’s not about a story, it doesn’t have a person in this story. It’s about music.”
‘Peter and the Wolf’
The LGSO concert ended with a performance of “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev. Simon Johnson, a freshman at Madison West High School, served as narrator and introduced the composition as “a musical story where every character is represented by a different instrument in the orchestra.” Ever since its composition in 1936, “Peter and the Wolf” has helped children learn about a symphonic orchestra. On Mar. 6, 1960, at a New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert, Leonard Bernstein described “Peter and the Wolf” as having “plenty of youngness … It’s about the young, and it’s for the young.”
Lori Meyer, a cello player with the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra since 2017 and an elementary and middle school orchestra teacher, said, “Peter and the Wolf is a fairy tale story that magically introduces the orchestra to young people. Generations of adults also remember the music.” After the concert, the children in the audience had the opportunity to visit an “instrument petting zoo” where, Anderson said, “You’re going to get a chance to look at instruments up close. You will see them played. For some of the instruments, you will even be able to play them yourself.” The orchestra’s next full concert is a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on March 16 at the Young Auditorium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. A chamber orchestra performance is scheduled for Jan. 20 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 700 Bloomfield Rd., Lake Geneva. MICHIGAN FIRM EXPANDS FORMER SHOWBOAT SITE Emagine Entertainment Inc., of Troy, Mich., opened the expanded and renovated former Showboat Theater in Lake Geneva earlier this year. Emagine Geneva Lakes is at 2565 Highway 120 in the Town of Lyons. The 35,000-square-foot theatre features 646 seats in eight auditoriums. Select auditoriums are equipped with Christie 4K DLP Digital Cinema projectors and Dolby Atmos immersive sound systems, according to Emagine. The theater was renovated with upscale décor and includes a full-service bar with hand-crafted cocktails, a concession menu featuring expanded food choices, powered reclining chairs separated by seven feet of row spacing and a front row of “cuddle” chairs. All auditoriums are handicap accessible and equipped with assistive devices for seeing- and hearing-impaired guests. The theater has a three-season beer garden featuring 12 draft beers. “We are thrilled to be bringing the Emagine movie-going experience to the Geneva Lakes community and to the Town of Lyons, in particular,” said Paul Glantz, Emagine Entertainment chairman. “The town officials have been extraordinarily supportive as we have pursued redevelopment of the former Showboat theatre. Our promise is to provide movie-goers with an exemplary experience from the time they walk through the front door. “From the moment you enter the state-ofthe-art entertainment venue, you will discern the difference. I
t’s the time of year that lighted displays line the shores of Geneva Lake and the cruise ships Lady of the Lake and the Grande Belle are dressed in an array of multicolored lights waiting to carry children of all ages on a magical cruise to Santa’s “North Pole” hideaway. The journey begins at Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Winter Harbor at 1 Liechty Dr., Williams Bay, where the decorated boat will be waiting for all the children and their families to board. Cruises depart daily (with the exception of Dec. 24 and 25). The first cruise each day is typically scheduled to depart at 4:30 p.m., but times vary depending on the day of the week. When the boat pulls from the pier and begins the journey the attention of all the passengers is focused on the illuminated light displays along the shore as the story of the voyage to the “North Pole” begins. Through a combination of music and narration, the journey continues as the captain and crew lead the way. The Santa Cruise is the among Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s popular cruises on Geneva Lake. The idea for the Santa Cruise came from Bill Gage, owner of the cruise line, who had seen SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
another version of the Santa Cruise while in Idaho. He realized the Santa Cruise would work well on Geneva Lake and could be even more exciting. Warm and dry The boats are comfortable, with an enclosed level on each where cruisers can stay warm and toasty as they make the journey. On the Lady of the Lake, the lower level is enclosed and heated, assuring that everyone will be warm no matter what the outdoor temperature. On The Grand Belle, it is the Upper level that is enclosed and heated. Passengers are free to move back and forth throughout the boat – dipping into the frigid air and retreating to the heated cabin. There are a variety of displays with several different holiday themes leading up to the North Pole. When the boat finally reaches Santa’s little home, he appears in the doorway with his list in hand. You know that list that all children worry about. Are they on the naughty or nice list? Can they expect Santa to leave them any Christmas gifts or will it be coal in their stockings?

During the trip there are also activities for the children to enjoy. Hot chocolate, other beverages and some snacks are sold on the cruise as well as beverages for the parents. The trip goes on no matter the weather. The group spoke of one cruise that took place in a snowstorm The cruise lasts for about 40 minutes, long enough to be interesting but not too long for children to lose interest. The cruise leaves at 4:30 pm each day with three tours held during the week. On Fridays and Saturdays the boats depart hourly between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Four departures are offered on Sundays. Check the Santacruiselakegeneva.com website for times and pricing. Dinner packages, which include a meal at Pier 290, are also available. Special adults-only cruises are offered at 8:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s just what it sounds like – enjoy a Santa Cruise in the confines of a boat full of adults during the last cruise of the night. On Dec. 21 and 29 the adult cruise will feature a special Naughty or Nice Tour with John Ludy to sing holiday songs with a little “give and take” from the crowd. A special holiday music review is set
