Disc golf offers healthy options for area family

hat started as a hobby about three years ago opened a new set of physical and social benefits for the Jarveys of Silver Lake. The hobby, disc golf, helped Amanda and Andrew find an endeavor they both can enjoy, offered a healthy alternative for their children and improved their own health. Like traditional golf, disc golf carries similar challenges, including scoring and SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
course challenges such as trees, shrubs and terrain changes. In disc golf, however, players discard the golf ball and clubs and replace it with a flying disc or Frisbee. Players target a raised basket instead of a hole. “When I first started out, it was a very social sport, we would have anywhere from eight to 12 of us get together and just go out and have fun,� said Andrew, 39, who recalled picking up a disc in 2014. Amanda concurred, adding the two took an immediate liking to the sport.

“Our friend took us out, it was like a big group of us. Both of our families were together and came out, had a bunch of discs and just tried it. I fell in love with it immediately,” said Amanda, 36. Since then, the Jarveys have played in a wide array of tournaments throughout Wisconsin, including stops in Saukville, Madison, Milwaukee, Lake Geneva, among other places. The more they traveled, the more competitive the two became, including a tournament win by Amanda in Saukville and a victory by Andrew in Kenosha County. “We started taking it a little more seriously after that, disc golf is one of the sports along the lines of darts, bowling, pool, bags and horseshoes,” Andrew said. “After a year and a half of playing, we played our first tournament.” Amanda said she saw her friends as motivation. “I started getting competitive because all the people we play with are in tournaments,” Amanda said at Fox River
Park in Silver Lake. “They make me strive to get better. I started working on it in practice, coming out here by myself and working on my throws.” Competitive events also brought other benefits, including cardiovascular health and strengthening the family bond. “I think I have lost probably 75 pounds over the last three years or so, just by playing and staying active in the sport,” Andrew said. Constructive alternative Amanda, who wanted to find an activity the family could enjoy, said disc golf gave her a new outlook. “It was more of going out and doing something that was a hobby with my husband. I didn’t want to go to the casinos when I got older,” Amanda said. “It was my goal and wanted to have a hobby we could do together.” Meanwhile, for the Jarvey children, 11-year-old BrookLynn, 15-year-old Maggie and James, 18, the sport encourages

them to drop the technology. Technology includes cell phones, iPads, and video games, according to the Jarveys. “Kids nowadays want to do more things on their iPhones and iPods. It is tough to get them out of the house. When we first started playing this, they were into it for the social aspect,” Andrew said. Although the children don’t play often, Amanda reports some of them tag along at the disc golf courses. “Even if they don’t want to necessarily throw, they can come out and walk the course, maybe climb a tree,” Amanda said. “It is nice to get out with nature and not have them on their cell phones or on video games all day long.” Open to anyone According to Amanda, disc golf is allinclusive, and not just for college crowd and men. Although Amanda believes not enough women play, she felt encouraged the more she practiced on the course.

“There really isn’t an age range – anyone can play – and I thought I would have a hard time because I couldn’t throw as hard as the men do. It was really not true, if you took a little effort, and just practice, you can become very good,” Amanda said. “I wish more women would play. It would be nice to see a lot of women out here.” While the sport is inclusive, disc golf few economic barriers, compared to traditional golf. Fox River Park and Silver Lake Park, which have a collective 45 holes, are free and open to the public. “Most of these courses are free to play,” said Andrew, noting some Milwaukee-area courses charge a fee. “Here in Kenosha County, these are all county funded. The Kenosha County Parks Department has the best group of guys as far as maintaining any park. What we have in our backyard is an absolute gem and wish that more people knew about it,” he continued.
Sport prospers in Walworth County While the Jarveys spend most of their time on courses in Kenosha County, including the University of WisconsinParkside, they also played on the White River Disc Golf Course in Lake Geneva. The White River Disc Golf Course, at the intersection of Geneva, Mill and Sage streets, carries different challenges. “We play in Lake Geneva quite a bit. Lake Geneva has a gorgeous course out there,” Andrew said. “It is in the back of what I think was the old Hillmoor Club.” “One of my favorite holes there happens to be over a pond, it is a pretty long shot,” he said. “The penalty is, if you are short, you are going to be out $15 to $20 on a disc, but it is still my favorite.” Aside from the White River Disc Golf Course, Walworth County has other courses, according to the sport’s governing body Professional Disc Golf Association. Middle School, Duck Pond Recreation Area near Fontana and Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. In Whitewater, both Lakeview Elementary and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater have their own courses. Other courses include two in Mukwonago, the Phantom Disc Golf Course and Miniwauken Park, and in - Andrew Jarvey Palmyra, Carlin Weld County Park has a course. There is just one course in Racine County, Johnson Park. Brandon Theriault, who owns Plan B Disc Golf Depot in the City of Racine, reportedly helped design the Johnson Park course. “Brandon has been open for two years now, he was one of the ones who spearheaded the effort to get that course in the ground in Racine,” Andrew said. “He is a true ambassador to this sport, Brandon really loves to give back.” Expanded network Disc golf has widened Jarveys’ social circle and they’ve met some people who are now among their best friends. “A large percentage of the friends we have, or associate with right now, we have met by playing disc golf,” Andrew said. The hope, Andrew said, is to see the network expand. “I wish that more people would try it and get into it, and actually further the sport,” Andrew said. “It is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States.”

he Walworth County Fair returns in a big way for 2017. The fair, which will run from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4, will have a theme of “Are You Ready For Big?” and organizers are emphasizing this year’s event will be big in multiple ways. “We are pretty excited. I think we’re going to have a really good fair this year,” said Larry Gaffey, the general manager of the fair. “People are going to love it. We will have the biggest turkey, the biggest boar and biggest horse. No one will believe how big these turkeys are. It will be fun to look at all that stuff.” The fair will also feature some of the biggest names in music, including the recent announcement of Martina McBride performing. Also, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

p.m., professional bull riders will participate in competitive riding. Also a part of the event will be the Pro Elite World Challenge barrel racing competition as cowgirls ride athletic horses through a course and around barrels. Professional riders will compete against sanctioned local riders. Then on the last day of August, more competition will be at the grandstand, as the Walworth County Fair Truck and Tractor Pull takes center stage at 11 a.m. and the Badger State competition will start at 7 p.m. The county pull is free, but there is a $5 admission fee for the Badger State event. “There will be big motorsports, bull rides and great carnival rides,” Gaffey said. After the month of August comes to a close, so will the fates of several old automobiles, as monster trucks will roar through the grandstand. All Star Motorsports Productions hosts the fair’s monster truck rally on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Returning to the fair this year are the arm wrestling tournament, which will feature tests of strengths by people of all ages with weigh

The fair will also feature the entertainment that it has become so well known for. Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the grandstand. The mud will be flying and a rumbling will be in the air on Labor Day, as the demolition derby hits the grandstand with three heats – one at 1:30 p.m., the second at 4 p.m. and the last one at 6:30 p.m. Wristbands will be available for $10 so fair-goers can see all three heats.

ften as the days of summer move into August, we begin to think about getting away and spending a few days enjoying the fine summer weather without the pressures of everyday life. Right in the heart of downtown Lake Geneva, Humble BnB, is a place to consider for a special getaway. Housed in a 1880s farmhouse in the historic Maple Park area of Lake Geneva, at first glance the well maintained home seems to be just like all the other historic homes in the area. It is when one is right in front the subtle Humble BnB sign that can be seen on the front bay window, things take on a different look.
Two years ago Beth and Jeff Iverson fulfilled their dream of opening a bed and breakfast, a dream that had been in the planning stages for 25 years. Working in the retail, lodging and restaurant services for many years, they have developed a feel for pleasing customers. Originally from Elgin, Ill., Beth and Jeff have traveled throughout the area to realize that Lake Geneva was the perfect area for their venture into the role of innkeepers, and the historic house on Madison Street was the perfect spot to begin that adventure. When entering the Humble BnB it is obvious that much time and thought has gone into converting this 1880s farmhouse into a warm and welcoming bed and breakfast. There is so much attention to detail in the community dining and living room or perhaps more in tune with the time – front parlor. “We have been collecting fun antiques and memorabilia for years, finding over the years a unique style all our own that creates warmth and interest without being crowded or stuffy. We intend to be an ever-
evolving work in progress to improve on what’s here,” Beth said. There are three guest rooms available. The Hive is the main floor, with a master suite that features a mahogany king sized bed with an attached bath and a private front porch. The other two rooms, the Queen Bee and the Honeycomb, are on the second floor, one with a queen-size bed and the other with a full-size bed. The two, second floor accommodations share a bathroom and are beautifully appointed. Each morning a full breakfast is served. Their signature item is the hash brown eggs nest served with avocado and fresh fruit. Or on another day it may be the freshly made blueberry pancakes and sausage accompanied by fresh fruit. A coffee/tea station is available throughout the day and fresh-baked goods are offered for an afternoon snack. Movies, books and games are available for visitors use. Looking to head for the beach? E M I T D O GO Kenosha County Fair set to celebrate Aug. 16 to 20 While the Kenosha County Fair promises to deliver some old favorites Aug. 16 to 20 on the county fairgrounds in Wilmot, a pair of new features could bring added thrills to the annual event, according fair manager Denise Zirbel. “We are excited to have two new contests in 2017,” Zirbel said. “A Barn Quilt Contest and a Home Brew Competition.” A Barn Quilt, like a fabric quilt, has a similar design structure. However, unlike the fabric counterpart, it is hand-painted and

affixed to the side of a barn. Barn Quilts, according to Barn Quilt Trail History’s website, has spread to 48 states and often created by civic groups, local arts councils, school groups and 4-H groups. Meanwhile, for the Home Brew contest, competitors produce their craft domestically using their own specific tastes.

For the kids
The county fair and kids go hand in hand and there are plenty of fun, kid-friendly activities to keep families busy throughout the entire run. The annual Children’s Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, at the southeast end of the fairgrounds, near the fair office.

The fair has an all-pay policy. Everyone who enters the fairgrounds must pay the daily admission price. Tickets cost $9 for adults ages 12 and up, $5 for children ages 8 to 11 and free for children 7 and younger. Season passes are also available for $30 for adults and $10 for children. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are “Senior Days” – anyone aged 62 and older will be admitted for $6. Admission is non-refundable, regardless of any cancellations in entertainment. The variety of tables was repeated on the deck with room for both large and small groups. “We want everyone to know they are welcome here,” Gaengel said. “Everyone fits in, whether they are families with children, groups of friends or motorcycle groups riding through, we welcome them. Our goal is to be sure that everyone fits in.” While redesigning the restaurant, Gaengel began the task of choosing the menu. “We started with a simple but tasty menu incorporating many of our favorite
foods,” Gaengel said. “The menu will evolve and become more creative as we discover our customer’s tastes and our chefs creative abilities.” Three of the most popular items on the appetizer menu are the beer-battered cheese curds, the hand-battered waffle-cut deep-fried pickles, and the giant pretzel, salted and served with a choice of honey mustard or nacho cheese. Several entrée-sized salads, including the traditional house salad, Caesar salad, or the spicy Thai salad – with mixed greens, peanut noodles and crispy wontons and a sweet Thai chili dressing – make the perfect summer lunch. Chicken or shrimp can be added to any salad. Each salad can also be served as a wrap for a more filling entrée.

The cod is offered every day on our regular menu but for the others, you need to visit on Friday,” Gaengel said. Enjoy a fish fry out on the deck at sunset. It will be the perfect ending to a busy week. “We haven’t focused on desserts yet,” Gaengel said. “We basically have ice cream or root beer floats. More creative desserts may come later down the line if there is an interest from our customers. “We focus on creating the best possible items. In the future, the menu will include an After 5 selection of dinner items including such items as fish, pasta dishes and various chicken offerings.” But first they will focus on perfecting the current menu.

Inside the restaurant has a new look. Authentic barn wood lines the lower walls while bricks cover the walls above the chair rail. The tables have a neutral, butcher block look.
In a previous job, Gaengel was involved in a restaurant that grew most of its own vegetables and herbs, which is something that he would like to incorporate in the restaurant here. “Maybe next year we will turn the flowerboxes located along the deck into herb boxes, for use in our foods and drinks,” he said. Items such as mint, parsley, thyme and oregano could easily be grown and convenient for the chef or bartender when needed. The bar is fully stocked and offers a variety of craft beers. “We focus on craft beers, primarily those from the Midwest, that is Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota for the beer drinkers. There are bottled beers and a variety of craft beers on tap,” Gaengel said. “We also have a full line of popular liquors and cocktails, including some specialty cocktails.” Many of the specialty drinks are an updated version of oldtime favorites. Try a Cucumber Collins, a Cucumber basil Gimlet, a rye Manhattan. For a unique drink sure to quench a summer thirst, the refreshing Coconut Mojito served in a cup made from a real coconut shell. Depending on availability, live music may also be heard on Sundays, Thursdays, and even days in between. “When some of our favorite musicians are available, we are always glad to have them come in,” Gaengel said. “The second floor is available for private parties such as bridal showers, christening parties, anniversaries,
family reunions and business meetings. For several decades, a mid-summer festival on the shores of Geneva Lake has put smiles on faces and given back to the community in the process. That event, the Lake Geneva Jaycees Venetian Festival, is poised for its 55th annual run. The festival runs from Aug. 16 through 20. Wednesday through Friday, the hours are 5 p.m. to midnight, and on Saturday and Sunday it runs from noon until midnight. The event has live music, a carnival, a water ski show, a boat parade and an arts and crafts fair.

“The Lake Geneva Jaycees are proud of what we can do in the community and we are all just volunteers that want to make the Geneva Lakes area the best it can be. This year will be the 23rd time the festival will have an arts and crafts fair. and noon to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. It will be in the Flat Iron and Seminary parks. Wristbands for $20 will be available on Aug. 16 and 17 from 5 to 10 p.m. and Aug. 19 from noon to 5 p.m. The sky will be lit on Aug. 20 at dusk with a fireworks display.
Live Music
Another staple of the Venetian Fest, live music, will be featured throughout the entire five-day festival. “We’re looking forward to having new bands that are supposed to be great,” Bartz said. Those bands include Rod Toughcurls and the Bench Press, which will be on stage Aug. 18 from 8 p.m. to midnight. The performances have a $5 cover charge.
Other musical acts will hit the stage at the same time Wednesday Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and have a $5 cover charge as well. Bella Cain will perform Wednesday night. Cherry Pie will follow on Thursday night, the Too White Crew will perform on Saturday night and the Joe Marcinek Band will follow on Sunday night. Also hitting the stage will be Jimmy Nick from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Un-Hich’d from 3 to 6 p.m. These two shows have no cover charge. On Sunday, the Lake Geneva House of Music will present a show from noon to 6 p.m. All shows will be in the Jaycees Entertainment Pavilion. Patrons must be 21 to enter.
Hitting the water
Rounding out the weekend will be the annual Sunday evening attraction, the boat parade. This year, the boat parade will have a 1980s theme. To be a part of the parade, an entry form is available at venetianfest.com/boatparade. In the parade, first-, second- and thirdplace, and best-in-show awards will be presented.
Other attractions
Venetian Fest will have a little something for everyone, including a Baggo Tournament and Water Ski Show. The Baggo Tournament is 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 19 at the Venetian Entertainment Pavillion. It is $40 per team, and has a double-elimination format.

here’s more to life than lilies and hostas, says Delavan gardener Kathleen Renowden whose lot in the Delmar subdivision boasts more than 125 native plants. While there’s nothing wrong with the garden staples – they’re pretty and easy to care for – Renowden encourages gardeners to use plants that benefit pollenators. To show gardeners how to do that – and let them see the plants in a real-life setting – Renowden will host The Premier Pollinator’s Pallette Garden Tour from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 5.

They have the proper nectar that bees, butterflies and other insects need to pollinate crops and other plants, she said. The most important pollinators, Renowden said, are bees, butterflies, moths and hundreds of types of little beneficial wasps. The pollinators love hyssop, which bears purple flowers, and Renowden expects to have a cluster of plants at the entrance of her garden abuzz with bumble bees at the time of the tour. Bumble bees won’t sting, she said. True pests, Renowden said, are Japanese beetles, which will

When shopping for plants, if a name is in quotation marks after the name of the so-called native plant such as “magnus” or “Cindy Sue,” it’s a hybrid and won’t have the same pollination value as the real thing, Renowden said.

Gardeners should look for the botanical name and shop at known greenhouses that carry native plants, she said. Three native plant merchandisers are Prairie Nursery in Westfield north of Portage, Prairie Moon in Minnesota and Agrecol Native Nursery based in Evansville. Area greenhouses that carry native plants might spray the flowers with neonicotinoids – insecticides that are toxic to bees. The products, which are chemically similar to nicotine, have been banned in Europe, she said. Jurg’s Greenhouse in Walworth does not use the chemicals, she said. Renowden started her garden six years ago on a sparse, weed-ridden lot. The time commitment in developing the garden has been “pretty much my life.” Renowden can be spotted pulling garlic mustard, which she said “takes over everything” and poisons the soil so that nothing else can grow, along public

rights of way. “It’s kind of a compulsion, I guess,” she said. Renowden said it has also been a learning process along the way. “I know how to do it easier now,” she said. In the fertile, mulched garden soil, many plants will grow larger than they do in their native environment, she said. Some become bullies and crowd others out. Her garden includes a native groundcover – a nice native alternative to pachysandra, she said – that blooms the first beautiful, yellow flowers of the spring for pollinators. Milkweed and yellow flowers throughout the garden attract butterflies, and a plant with an upsidedown cup-like flower provides a place that bees like to hide, Renowden said. Different varieties of plants with trumpetlike flowers attract hummingbirds, and the garden has herbs and plants beneficial to people too. A berry that is “everywhere in Europe” because of its health benefits – it has three times the antioxidants of blueberries – grows there as well as New Jersey Tea, apple trees, herbs for hot flashes, a Chinese ginseng-type plant (not native to the United States) for anxiety and Indian boneset used by native Americans to treat broken bones. Hazel nuts, Joe Pye weed, trillium, wild impatiens, native sunflowers, the native plant that petunias were born from, a vine that attracts Swallowtail butterflies and 13 kinds of shrubs also adorn the garden. Renowden, who has multiple certifications as a native gardener including endorsement from the National Wildlife Federation, said gardeners are welcome to their lilies and hostas. But, she encourages them to aim for a 50-50 mix of the traditional plants with native varieties that have value “for the creatures.” Orange day lilies, which can be seen in ditches throughout the county, have been named an invasive species in Wisconsin. Renowden will distribute brochures, pamphlets and catalogs at her Aug. 5 event and will give away plants. The tour is free but Renowden hopes for donations to the Xerces Society and the Pollinator Partnership. The Xerces Society is a non-profit environmental organization that focuses on the conservation of invertebrates considered to be essential to biological diversity and ecosystem health, according to Wikipedia. The name is in honor of the extinct California butterfly, the Xerces blue. The Pollinator Partnership is a four-star rated international charity organization that educates people about the need for pollinators to grow crops such as tomatoes, green beans and peas, Renowden said.
Paloma Resorts launches catering company Paloma Resort Properties began delivering upscale food service directly to customers last month. Softly launched in mid-June, Geneva Lakes Catering delivers plated meals for events such as wedding banquets, business breakouts, custom-catered birthday parties and company picnics. Geneva Lakes Catering offers pickup and delivery service from its local commercial kitchen as well as full service, with each course crafted onsite, personally presented to guests and seamlessly washed away afterward. “Our well-seasoned staff has decades of combined experience operating Lake Geneva dining outlets and delivering exquisite spreads for large and small receptions,” said Garth L. Chambers, president of Paloma Resorts, which Geneva National Resort, the Hunt Club Steakhouse and The Ridge Hotel. “Just as we’d do for in-house banquets, we assign a knowledgeable event coordinator to personally work with clients to map out an inspired menu that

underscores the event’s theme and purpose while working within budget and dietary guidelines.” Chambers said Geneva Lakes Catering plans to set the table mainly for area events, serving up local fare with Wisconsin flair. “We intend to stay close to home so that food arrives fast and fresh from our Lake Geneva kitchen,” he said. In the first two weeks since quietly opening its catering and website doors, Geneva Lakes Catering has served three business events and received glowing reviews. “As we work to grow this business,” said Chambers. “We look forward to employing more people and furthering the economic growth of Walworth County.”

Yerkes to host eclipse viewing event Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay is offering a special opportunity for people to safely watch a solar eclipse on Aug. 21. The eclipse is an astronomical event in which the moon will pass between the earth and the sun. From some locations in the country, the sun will be entirely blocked out. From Yerkes, more than 80 percent of the sun will be covered, according to officials at Yerkes. The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The eclipse itself begins just after 11:45 a.m., and reaches its maximum at about 1:15 p.m. Various solar viewing instruments will be available for safely watching the eclipse, and each attendee will receive a pair of eclipse glasses, which will allow them to safely look at the sun, while supplies last. Several other activities with eclipse information will also be provided. The hosts encourage people to arrive by 11:30 a.m., but that is not required; The event will he offered regardless of weather.
The fee for this event is $6 per person. Children 6 and younger are admitted free of charge. Registration is appreciated. Children must be accompanied by adults. Yerkes’ regular weekday tours will be

Abbey’s Waterfront has fresh look, menu The Abbey Resort, Fontana, has completed renovations to its Waterfront restaurant, including a new outdoor bar area featuring a waterfall and fire pit. The renovation also includes a refreshed outdoor patio and seating area overlooking Abbey Harbor, relocation of the hostess stand, new branding and a complete overhaul of the indoor seating and bar areas providing diners with unobstructed views of Abbey Harbor from nearly every seat in the restaurant.
